BLI Rolling Thunder Vs Kato Sound Box comparison.
Come see my website: watchtrainsnow.com
BLI has lots of rumble. I wonder how the Kato Sound Box compares to it. I Also show the early diesel with turbo sound card with a SD40-2, GP35, and a Life Like GP38-2.

D51 Sound card review

The D51 Sound card can be used for more tan one locomotive. For example the very small Atlas 4-4-0. Also for old locomotives such as The Atlas/Rivarossi locomotives.

Happy New Year Everyone. A poet once said: There is a time to think, and a time to act. And this is no time to think! Once a year, I like to look back at my achievements, and think about my goal for the next year. While I have two nice PA1’s on the track, I thought it would be nice to do a comparison between the Soundtraxx Tsunami2 vs the Kato Sound Box. Also I acquired a new passenger station ...

Just another reason for me to buy a soundbox!!!
@@MichaelRailfan2808 I’m sure enjoying mine!
I bought one back in late 99 for $32 brand new...stored it for 20 years and recently ran it..still runs good and appreciate your video on how to work on these
@@j.s.3297 They are good runners. They are worth big bucks now…
The Kato definitely has the more accurate sound - the BLI sounds like a 710G. But, more importantly, is anyone ever going to make a proper GMD model instead of slapping CP paint on an EMD? Them stepwells and headlights bug me. ;)
Rapido trains, maybe?
Thanks for the video. It’s nice to see the differences in the two systems so that you can make an informed choice. I prefer and have a soundbox and it is fun to use.
Broadway limited locomotives are expensive...
It makes a big difference in the quality of sound.
I'm sure enjoying it!
I just got a sound box cheap . I am now searching for a resonably priced sound card to play with first. Most of my locos a DCC with sound.
The sound box give you a chance to run those old non-DCC engines with sound.
Run this with your Sound Box lol
I will! I've too many projects on the go, but some day I will!
I confess I love my soundbox, it does mean you can have sound with anything (or nothing!) rather than DCC sound
@@grumbeast It’s a different way of looking at sound. If you like DCC it’s different. I’m sure having fun with the Sound Box.
Does the D51 card have the three different whistles that the American cards have?
@@ElJefeNScale-dj2wt Yes, that was a good question as I did not try it during the video.
" I speak train!" How wonderful!
@@jcsalerno8263 for sure!
I feel my US light steam card is a better match for my 4-4-0 American when I compared the available whistles and other sound effects to videos of the real thing. I agree it's much more fun to run the 4-4-0 with the box.
@@ElJefeNScale-dj2wt Probably the light steam in better. The D51 does not have a bell…
That makes a great sound mate, and its agreat looking loco. Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
It does!
Thanks for the video. I bought a soundbox about a year or so ago, and found it to be great fun. I run dc, so I don’t bother with sound decoders, but like you said this is a cheaper way to enjoy the sounds of the different engines. I don’t use it all the time, but when I’m in the mood for sound, or I’m showing someone my layout, it’s easy to hook up .
It is so much fun!
Happy New Year to you also! Sounds like you had a very successful year. Looks like your getting some snow. Thanks for sharing. Dave

Thanks for the shout out! Great to see the Soundbox trend catching on. Hopefully it's rise in popularity will push Kato to release future sound cards like a much needed generation 4 diesel and perhaps a Soundbox 2.0 with newer sound files.
@@ElJefeNScale-dj2wt I Hope everyone subscribes to you, you deserve it.
I Would like to see the sound box with more direct buttons for sounds, not a combination of buttons. It has room on the box to have them. Also, why have the Line-out and the Mic/In in the front? Please put them in the back with the other connections. That way, you can hide the wires more easily. Also, I'm considering using a small portable speaker box (Boom-Box) under my layout. It would also be cool if they allowed you to buy and download sound files and record them to flash drives or memory cards. I'm almost thinking of waiting on a SoundBox 2.0. I'm not very fond of proprietary cards. I really love the effect, though.
@LeonKolenda As far as more fluid operation without button combos.....the Smart Device Controller really opens this thing up.
I don't know if you have multiple DC controllers. If you do, then each one could use a Soundbox.
@@tonyantonuccio4748 That would be something, two trains making noise at the same time!
I came to own an older SD40-2 that sounded like a coffee grinder. I tried a new motor and everything until I changed out the little black blocks that support the drive line/worm gear. The old ones were not cut as precisely as the new ones, and were very tight in the frame. This apparently caused the drive line to be torqued and rattle when in use especially with the shell on. I changed those, and now it is smooth as glass. I would suggest changing those bearing blocks if you are having noise problems with these otherwise great locomotives. The Atlas Part number is 480007A. You will have to pull the octagonal universal off of the shaft to change one of the blocks, but it came off fairly easily with just some twisting motion.
That is a good idea, I will try that.
I have had one of these for years now, they are great and I run more and more DC rather than DCC. I did a review myself years ago. ruclips.net/video/Ewa0-ZT3y7o/видео.htmlsi=iodcX4I9SLYxcYOs
@@grumbeast I watched it it’s very cool!
I lucked out and got a soundbox for 99.00 brand new, right before the prices went through the roof. Amazon still has them for a hundred plus dollars. But some nuts on ebay are asking two to three hundred dollars for them. Thats ridiculious. If you want one Amazon is the cheapest. I love old school DC. I'm building a switching industrial branchline. Its perfect for my size of layout. Haven't tried the entertainment system hook up yet, but that sounds awsome!.👌👍
@@glasswhisper5781 Yes, I’m sure having fun with this!
Very nice demo! El Jefe got me interested in the sound box. Looking forward to purchasing one for myself. Thanks for sharing!
I hope you enjoy it.
@@chiparooo I’m sure enjoying mine.
I love the Kato sound box.. There are 2 different knobs that control how the engine will respond to throttle control.their are soundcards for most diesel even modern ones. There is an add on that will let you operate wireless with your phone . I have external speakers hooked up but you can plug in headphones also. My layout is a U shaped 16 ft long and 5 ft wide. My controller is in middle so it really works well for me. I know dc is old school but with kato you can have beautiful crossing gates and signals that work( stay red longer if all wheels are metal) before going back to yellow then green. The soundbox is the icing on the cake! Horn bell brake etc.. lots of fun and much easier and cheaper. It is however best for smaller to mid size layout
@@jeffallen5698 I’m having a lot of fun with it so far!
