I need that Bloody Tears remix used for the Shattered Reality stage ASAP. UPDATE: Found it. It's Castlevania II 'Castle of Tears' [Bloody Tears (Street-day time-Stage BGM)] by DigiE from Overclocked Remix, though it is slightly edited in length and such.
how are there no comments talking about shoujo getting 2 blind one‐shots in a row 1:02:09 absolutely unreal. they’re single‐screen but it’s still a brand‐new mechanic and not terribly intuitive to sight‐read because there are 2 objects with separate locations and physics to control and predict in‐time. she takes her time but also makes no mistakes, understanding the value of careful exploration in a relay where you can’t keep throwing yourself at it repeatedly to learn. the first of these rooms took the groovy goombas 9 attempts and the second room 10 attempts.
This race was phenomenal! Really makes me proud to be a (tiny) part of the SMW Central community! The quality of the levels was seriously impressive, but Shattered Reality needs a mention of its own lol. It was mindblowing! Hard to believe this is even SMW anymore, the audio, the patterns, the mechanics, it's incredible! (And that speech by Dan was the cherry on top hehe) And that's not to say any less of the other levels, Lara the Pokey is one of the most interesting mechanics i've seen in a long time! The L/R shell kicking and power-up while in the air were also really unique. And of course, the skill of the runners to be able to showcase the levels was just as impressive! The levels looked incredibly tough, and the runners made short work of them as if they were no big deal. There were so many great plays and great moments in this, kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Special mention to Juz for that ending! The Kaizo Relay Race has been one of the highlights of GDQ for me for a while now, and it somehow is still getting better with every edition!
Yeah, this game has definitely come very far in its modding when compared to the original kaizo forever ago. It's insane. I had to re-watch the fourth stage multiple times to see all of those hits. Crazy hitboxes. Well done to all involved! :D
They get this complaint every year, but I imagine since they've never increased the head start time their reasoning is A) it's an exhibition match for charity so the points don't matter, and B) it's less interesting for the "race" when only one team is doing anything, so more than a minute of potential head start wouldn't be fun for viewers. It's not like a >1 minute head start would have changed the results of this race, anyway.
juz hard reading the minecart room right after clearing the last room, giving them a massive knowledge and practice time advantage he really did better that time
For bragging rights, the number of sections cleared by each runners. Obviously that does not account for the difficulty of the sections, nor for the finds or ideas that helped the team. Also the 4th level being so different, it does not enter the calculations. Groovy Goombas: 19 sections cleared Juzcook - 7 (4 in the last level!) YouFailedMe - 6 GlitchCat - 5 JavaBrew - 1 Funky Fuzzies: 22 sections cleared ThaBeast - 8 Shoujo - 7 MarkAlarm - 4 Shovda - 3 NB: All 8 runners are amazing at SMW and there is a big randomness factor as to who clears a section and a luck of the draw as to what type of challenges suits a runner more than another.
I love that all 8 of them made some massive contributions. Like, Shoujo is a monster and needs to be stopped, but no one was getting _carried_ carried.
I always love when the team who's behind wins because the other team can't grasp the alien concept in time. These runners are gods at these games and all it takes is one expert to figure it out.
This was SUCH a great run. The MM community really is such a great, supportive place, and the levels they make are a beautiful blend of aesthetic and disgusting. Pure brilliance.
Eyyy Shovda in the race event! Much love to all the racers, commentators and creators, I watched all of Juz's practice runs so nice to see all that work paying off. Gotta love the miracle Touhou ending 1 shot too.
Shoujo is a monster, her back must've been hurting after the last relay race But OMGGGG I was yelling at the screen when I saw her take like 50 hits in Shattered Reality LOLLLLL
When I saw dtothefourth had a level, I said to myself, "Oh what craziness will THIS be," but I was NOT prepared! I won't risk spoiling with a comment, but dtothefourth, you're a treasure, thanks for everything you do for the community
This is my fav part of GDQ/SGDQ....I love these kaizo levels and watching everyone play them, tbh I thought Beast and Shoujo on the same team was going to be a wash but Juz and friends pulled out the W! Great job! Keep making that money!
Man juz literally won the race fir the gumbas lol. But tbf shojo and beast carried fuzzies for almost the emtire race. Just sad that such imoressive showing feom those two still got them to lose the race but meh that is what happens sometimes when it is a one race to win them all
Spent the most hectic part of my work shift half-assing the job to keep an eye on my precious coffee bean. So proud of my favorite anime girl, Javabrew.
43:17 -What is the BG music for Blaagon's Growing Pains? It's so familiar... Chrono Trigger maybe? I can't put my finger on it. Anyone know the song?- I figured it out! It's from Sonic Adventure 1. Leading Lights ...for Lost World. It plays in the level in the temple where you can walk on walls.
The exhibition of sheer skill on display this run was NUTS! Is the Kaizo Beats to Run Quick To, available anywhere? I tried tracking down this music with out much luck.
Some ideas for the final round. Maybe next time whoever has less points isn't allowed to watch or communicate with their teammates for a minute per point? That would show how important the communication is
The SMW community’s creativity and wow factor continues to amaze me every year, truly amazing work, innovation, and skill. GG to everyone involved! 😃👍🏽
WTF was Shattered Reality??!! I seriously am just watching in pure & utter awe at what I'm seeing. The rest of the levels are equally impressive but Shattered Reality is something that I have literally never seen in my life in a Mario Game.
Instead of this crazy hotseat thing, couldn't you put something together to support swapping via multitap? Or if you want to go even quicker and dirtier, build just a button based switch that allowed you to switch SNES controllers? I've messed around with something like that for GCN that I put together and it worked great and SNES is probably even simpler, flying out of the hot seat like that looks exhausting. I am sure you guys could find a custom controller person to help build a device for this for next time
I could be wrong, but I think there's a limit on how many blocks can be spinning at once. So making those three in the middle spin forced the first one to go back to normal once they hit the last one, thus allowing it to bounce the shell back in their direction again.
i still do not understand the format for these races because the final race is the only one that matters. what is the point of the other 7 races? winning 5/7 races and only getting a 30 second head start seems like not an advantage at all. i know its not really a competition but its still kinda annoying
Yeah it does feel a bit weird but I think it's probably the best of bad options. At the end of the day the aim is to showcase the levels and the runners' abilities, and other formats have issues that detract from one of those goals - like making later levels irrelevant to the competition if the winner was just which team wins the most stages, or having players sitting around not playing for too long if the headstart was much bigger. This format does make the last level by far the most important one but it at least means the "competition" is alive until the very end and lets the runners showcase their skills as much as possible.
Because then if a team is ahead by more than 1 level, they will be playing levels even though it may be impossible to win. It's a showcase first and foremost, and we want as much content as possible!
because the idea of this event being centralized on competition rather than fun kinda loses its hype factor if one team just gets crushed before you're only half way done, it would probably feel really dejecting for the losing team which just wouldn't be in the spirit of a charity event
By far the most insane SMW relay GDQ has ever seen. This was awesome!
1:11 - One And The Same
13:23 - Fleeting Footwork
27:20 - Market Crash
37:59 - Shattered Reality
43:17 - Growing Pains
1:00:26 - Soulbound Shell
1:12:52 - Violence In Repose
1:27:00 - Wild Wild Wescue
Shattered Reality is a level that just oozes with passion, creativity, and heart. That was THE coolest thing I have seen in a long time!
It's sick, but, I gotta be honest, it's probably THE best Undertale fangame I've ever seen.
dtothefourth knocking it out of the park as per usual!
I need that Bloody Tears remix used for the Shattered Reality stage ASAP.
UPDATE: Found it. It's Castlevania II 'Castle of Tears' [Bloody Tears (Street-day time-Stage BGM)] by DigiE from Overclocked Remix, though it is slightly edited in length and such.
oh thank you so much
Thank you!
Thank you!!!
DigiE??? I haven't heard that name in like a decade, good god
These creative Kaizo levels got me so hyped.
Shattered Reality literally just blew me away!
He wasn't lying, they shattered reality
I hope you all enjoyed the levels, and in particular violence in repose. It was pleasure to provide some content for this race.
Thank you Alex! Fantastic level!
how are there no comments talking about shoujo getting 2 blind one‐shots in a row 1:02:09

Thabeast is too powerful!!
Juz' reads at the end were insane
I was just warming up for the next 8 levels 😂
Thabeast is my favorite.
He's beating all SMW games, and he means all of them!
@dakotababyak1842 whoosh
@dakotababyak1842 you forgot to say "Um, actually" first
beast and shoujo on the same team is just too much
RIGHT?? not even fair
Go Juz!!!
Shattered reality... dang. Demoscene avoidance level. Amazing!
30 seconds is basically no head start at all on Kaizo levels
Yeah they’ve got to do something else about the head starts.. should be at least a minute per win
Especially if they’re allowed to watch the other team… and watching someone play is what 3 of them would have been doing anyways?
They get this complaint every year, but I imagine since they've never increased the head start time their reasoning is A) it's an exhibition match for charity so the points don't matter, and B) it's less interesting for the "race" when only one team is doing anything, so more than a minute of potential head start wouldn't be fun for viewers. Juz victory was insane... Jesus Christ
unreal
juz hard reading the minecart room right after clearing the last room, giving them a massive knowledge and practice time advantage
he really did better that time
Shattered Reality is basically an Amiga demo in Mario level form.
Level 4 is one of the coolest levels ive ever seen. Well done
Juz putting the whole team on his shoulders. Oi, mate
For bragging rights, the number of sections cleared by each runners. Obviously that does not account for the difficulty of the sections, nor for the finds or ideas that helped the team. Also the 4th level being so different, it does not enter the calculations.
Groovy Goombas: 19 sections cleared
Juzcook - 7 (4 in the last level!)
YouFailedMe - 6
GlitchCat - 5
JavaBrew - 1
Funky Fuzzies: 22 sections cleared
ThaBeast - 8

MarkAlarm - 4
Shovda - 3
NB: All 8 runners are amazing at SMW and there is a big randomness factor as to who clears a section and a luck of the draw as to what type of challenges suits a runner more than another.

ThaBeast earning the MVP award this year as he always does. The man is downright unstoppable.
G f-ing G!
Shattered Reality was absolutely phenomenal!
Yesssss! Kaizo race is my favorite event of every year! Shattered Reality is the coolest Mario level I've ever seen!
Excellent race by all the runners here! Also, the commentators really love the word “y’all” for some reason.
Beast is a beast
That Touhou level was legitimately the coolest thing I have ever seen done in a Kaizo game holy crap
Go Juz, and Thab, and Shoujo!
It took me one hour and 25 minutes to notice that Groovy and Funky are names from Special World levels
I tell ya it is crazy how close this was and how insane those levels were! Just a great race!
This was fantastic, and all the runners did a great job, as did the commentary. Im kind if sad I missed seeing it live.
Thab and Shoujo on one team is monstrous
The level of creativity from these level makers is insane.
I always love watching these. Shoujo is an absolute monster.
I'm so mad I missed the first half due to work. Shattered Reality was sick! Great job Funky Fuzzies and Groovy Goombas!
So many awesome runners. SMW in GDQ is my favorite!
Someone call Retro Game Mechanics Explained we need a deep dive on how the Dan Salvato level was created STAT
Great runs, everyone! Much love to all the runners and level creators ❤❤❤
What a nailbiting set! Really went down to the last stage to determine the winner!
The commentators just devolving into laughter at 40:28 is so good. What an incredible level!
GG racers! Way to clutch it out Juz. Game pleigh! 🤘
Before the run ends, or rather the video, go Groovy Goombas. You got this, Juz!!! :D With that said, I hope Groovy Goombas won. :)
Eyyy Shovda in the race event! Much love to all the racers, commentators and creators, I watched all of Juz's practice runs so nice to see all that work paying off. Gotta love the miracle Touhou ending 1 shot too.
1:24:20 Damn Juz, that wasn't 3/10 gameplay, that was at least 5/10.
1:24:15 was mind-blowing. Incredible.
Thabeast and Shoujo on the same team is just plain overkill
Track four was something….i THINK it was a Mario level
Shoujo carrying as usual 🤭✨️
transfems stay winning
thabeast did alot more tho...how did shojo carry
“Shoujo doing Shoujo things” is my favorite player-related community meme that’s come about from the last couple GDQ relays.
Shoujo is a monster, her back must've been hurting after the last relay race
But OMGGGG I was yelling at the screen when I saw her take like 50 hits in Shattered Reality LOLLLLL
Did you mix up thabeast with shoujo? 😂
When I saw dtothefourth had a level, I said to myself, "Oh what craziness will THIS be," but I was NOT prepared! I won't risk spoiling with a comment, but dtothefourth, you're a treasure, thanks for everything you do for the community
That shattered reality level brought tears to my eyes! Amazing level.
This is my fav part of GDQ/SGDQ....I love these kaizo levels and watching everyone play them, tbh I thought Beast and Shoujo on the same team was going to be a wash but Juz and friends pulled out the W! Great job! Keep making that money!
That was soooooo gooood !!! OMG What a comeback !
Man juz literally won the race fir the gumbas lol. But tbf shojo and beast carried fuzzies for almost the emtire race. Just sad that such imoressive showing feom those two still got them to lose the race but meh that is what happens sometimes when it is a one race to win them all

shoujo and the n64 guy just destroying the competition
Juz taking the cake! GG yall!
Another comment saying Shattered reality was beyond fantastic! The creativity and coding ability is just out of this world!
That pre-bullet-hell speech was chilling though T_T
Holy shit Juz ending level seven was so sick
This is absolutely incredible
It's always neat to see races at GDQ!!!
Shoujo one-shots are my favourite things
It took me an hour and a half to notice the names in the corner
Wild wild wescue was sleeper good imho. The sheer production value alone of that level was amazing.
Shattered Reality was heckin' AMAZING. Super NES for the WIN.
He's so clutch!!
Track 4 was SICK.
It's a great surprise to see a Guy game inspired avoidance. Such a great fangame community too.
30:25 "PLEASE JUST DO BETTER" I'm dead
Shattered Reality was crazy amazing holy shit
The exhibition of sheer skill on display this run was NUTS! Is the Kaizo Beats to Run Quick To, available anywhere? I tried tracking down this music with out much luck.
suuuch an epic race!! i love the creativity and community love on show here
Some ideas for the final round. Maybe next time whoever has less points isn't allowed to watch or communicate with their teammates for a minute per point? That would show how important the communication is
Shoujo is so extraordinary good! Extremely pleasant to watch.
Thab relay master
juz at 1:24:18 is just wild
Man Beast is on another level!
Here for thabbbb
shattered reality was absolutely bonkers. wtaf this ran on an SNES?
Love this
The SMW community’s creativity and wow factor continues to amaze me every year, truly amazing work, innovation, and skill. GG to everyone involved! 😃👍🏽
Shoujo just SLAYIN' as usual! GG everyone!
51:03 Why do they need to hit those 3 red ? blocks to get through?
I didn't see Shoujo in the thumbnail blending into the purple light in the top right haha
Great entertainment
Oh my god shattered reality
WTF was Shattered Reality??!! I seriously am just watching in pure & utter awe at what I'm seeing. The rest of the levels are equally impressive but Shattered Reality is something that I have literally never seen in my life in a Mario Game.
kaizo relays are always so damn good
Glitchcat alwat makes progress but didn't get a shining moment this race. Frustrating.
He's a legend and always will be.
He acted as a pioneer and provided hints. What a teamwork
He got that bastard mole up the pyramid which led to the W. I'm proud to see that patience, perseverance and communication.
@@CloudyNumberOne and it's hilarious
Id say he's the mvp, pulled out clutch and made the reads so his team could pull ofnthe upset
How is Shattered Reality able to run on an SNES? Mind blowing stuff!
we are able to compress data much better than back when smw was released, same goes for music quality, remember moore's law?
Is there a way we can get the sound track to shattered reality?
1:50 anyone recognize the song? I've played the game it's from and it's killing me
Instead of this crazy hotseat thing, couldn't you put something together to support swapping via multitap? so in level 5, what were the three up throws in a row for?
probably to stop the first block to the left from spinning since only four blocks can spin at a time, the fourth one being the one below to the right
I could be wrong, but I think there's a limit on how many blocks can be spinning at once. So making those three in the middle spin forced the first one to go back to normal once they hit the last one, thus allowing it to bounce the shell back in their direction again.
I love TheJavaBruwu

I like to consider the first few levels as warmup, other than that I agree it could have a little more impact
