Excellent video dispelling the myth of shaft flex being determined and fit based on things like swing speed. How a person moves a shaft through space, loads, unloads, and delivers the club (path and angle of attack at impact) are more important for determining what shaft flex suits a particular person than basing things on swing speed.
Yup. People definitely get way to caught up on shaft flex tbh. Just gotta find the shaft that works. Doesn't matter what weight, what flex, what profile etc. only what works best for you 👌👌
I went from a tipped X flex to a senior flex, tipped 1/2"...the senior flex is far more accurate and just as long--with much less effort! I'm sure it's a feel thing, mentally thinking I need to be more aggressive with the X, yielding much less accuracy--and less center-strikes as well. The older I get, the more I like easy! Golf is hard enough!!
Is so true you just have to try a bunch until you find the one that feels good to you and has good results. I’m playing the 1K Black Stiff and my swing speed is 100 or lower but feels awesome and results are great!! Get fit ! Can’t say that enough.
Fascinating test. Matches my personal experience. I don't see much difference in results on well struck shots with different shafts but definitely a feel difference. Seems like the conclusion is to play what feels best and give most confidence (within reason on the results).
Thanks glad you enjoyed it and hope it helps. Yeah I think there are a lot of other more important variables to address first rather than flex. So yeah just because you swing a certain speed doesn't necessarily mean you need a certain flex. Just gotta figure out which shaft works best for you, doesn't matter what it is or what it says on it 👍
Regular shaft has a more active tip, closing the face. X-stiff has a stout tip, holding the face more open. Exactly the results I was expecting. Good video 👍
@@ryanhorner1675 but then the stiff went ment left than the regular 🤔 I personally would say that won't always be the pattern, it will be very dependent on the player 👍
It’s not as simple as that. I recently had the exact opposite experience changing shaft from a riptide stiff to a 1k black x-stiff. My miss went from a high, spinny block to the right to a left knuckle ball. Depends very much how you deliver the club and bend profile of the shaft.
@@Nick-05 yeah absolutely right. I would actually say more of the pattern nowadays would be id see more people missing a soft shaft high right and find a stiffer shaft easier to square up/hit left
Shows you have to test and go through fittings to find out what works, and any online discussion about what shaft works for so and so and all those spin and launch labels are useless.
not surprised... The softest shaft you can control will go the furthest...The stiff shafts are usually a bit slower because they have less "whip" but can help with accuracy.
Well the swing speed was the same so the softer shaft didn't enable me to swing it faster. The bigger variable was I struggled to square the face as much with the X which created slightly less efficiency paired with slightly more launch and spin. I would say as a rule that softer shafts go further
@@epgolfstudios I don’t think you swing speed changes much but ball speed can be higher with a regular flex shaft than a stiff shaft. You probably don’t need an extra stiff shaft despite your swing speed because your swing is much better than the average golfer. For me a stiff shaft helps me to have more control and it usally tracks straighter and further than a regular shaft would, my ball speed is actually down with a stiff shaft compared to a regular but more carry due to straighter flight.
@@davidm7031 thanks David 👍 and that's a great question! I would certainly consider it. I mean I very rarely actually play golf anymore, but if I were playing and actually trying to score then I'd probably do some more intense testing around what shaft I exactly wanted to play. But if it came out as the best then yeah absolutely
Another excellent vid Ross! It just goes to show how overrated flex ratings are and how much they differ between models as well as brands. It can work the other way where an x is suited for a slower swing speed based on clubhead delivery, tempo, etc. Ego placebo effect has a big role in flex too. I guess that’s why they call it ‘flex’.
Thanks! And yes exactly that, different profiles, different weights and no universal flex designation it's just a minefield, but most people think they understand flex more than the other variables so they tend to fixate on it a little bit, when they don't really need to. All about getting fitted and play what works best 👌
Yeah reasonably smooth. I've always said I'm a bit 'long, laggy and whippy' id say if someone had the same speed as me but a more short and snappy swing they likely would have struggled with the regular more.
Excellent video! What do you suggest to those who have a variety of swings and strike patterns and feel like there is never a good time to schedule a fitting? {With you, I would book a few lessons and then spontaneously switch to fitting when swinging 'average' :-). I used my previous driver for 10+ years after trying a few shafts and settling on a Aerotec Steel Fiber ss75. They discontinued shafts for woods. Lesson learned: buy a spare or two if you find one you that suits you!
Not Ross, but my suggestion is find a place with a Mizuno Shaft Optimizer 3d fitting system, and see what shafts it recommends for you. (It often reveals people swing more consistently than they think). Then go try the shafts it recommends with whatever clubhead you are considering.
Great vid, can I ask why your path has changed. Is it the driver/shafts or are you trying to swing out to in. Normally watching your vids you swing in to out.
Thanks! And yeah that's all me, shafts won't really change path. I'm generally much more consistent when I hit the fade so I should really do it a lot more 😂
There is no international standard for shafts as to what is stiff or regular or bend profile etc. Hence get a fitting and leave your ego behind. I just got fitted into a senior's driver shaft.
@@epgolfstudiosflex is also very much tied to headweight, so when we adjust for swingweight/moi we're simultaneously changing flex, albeit in small increments.
@@epgolfstudios I know you know, it was more intended for those who probably don't see the connection and might read the comments, it's a rabbit hole I guess
I don't believe in the letter on the shaft. I believe in bend profiles. That regular shaft gave you the best sequence. You never had to rip it out of the top of the swing to feel the load.
Yeah I'd probably agree that bend profile or the design of the shaft is more important than the flex. Flex gets overhyped and people worry about it too much
@@petekenny3774 yup, shaft flex can only be compared to the other shafts in that exact line up, like in this video, the 1K blue yes Stiff will be stiffer than Reg and the X will be stiffer than the stiff. But as soon as you start comparing that to other brands and other bend profiles it means nothing really
