    • @caldermoore3165

      they both have there pros and cons. for c4ds toon shaders, you can get full control over the toon lines and do things like, animate them, make them go past the geometry like a loose sketch, etc. BUT I have found its toon to be very slow compared to arnolds, especially when you are trying to lookdev. arnold is great beacause you can mask things with clever use of nodes, completely customize the shader to how you want it to look, the only limiting thing IMO is that changing how the toon lines look is a little lacking compared to c4d's. arnolds toon is super fast to render, even in huge scenes like my elevator scene or the power station scene, those only took 4 min at 5k resolution with heavy geo. In the end, they both have pros and cons, its just about finding which one best suits what you want to achieve. Greyscalegorilla has some great tutorials for c4ds toon if you want to check those out and compare. Best of luck!!

      @ClownXmachina 5 лет назад

      Great info ! Thanks for the more than adequate response. Damn, I thought it would go the other way round with render times, although in cinema, if you use more than 2 render options in the toon shader, renders go form 2-4 seconds to 10, 20+/frame. Still haven't watched your arnold toon series, but will do so soon, after I get some work done.

      I would also add that Sketch and Toon can't handle movement between the camera and objects very well sometimes. Flickering can happen. I tried similar animation with Arnold successfully .

    Great tutorial! I was wondering how you achieved a fine line around your shadows (referencing your image at 0:25)?I'm using Maya and haven't been able to reproduce this effect. I was also wondering about using the TriPlanar projection for the Edge Detection Map as Cubic doesn't seem to be the right choice for Maya or am I not understanding something?

    • @caldermoore3165
      @caldermoore3165  5 лет назад +1

      yup triplanar would work, all depends on what your looking for with the textures you use. as for the shadow lines, i go through how to do that in part 2. for maya use the AIshadowmatte.

      Octane at the moment cannot achieve what arnold can with its toon shader. Thats the main reason why I started to look at other renderers that could achieve what I wanted. Using Arnold over all the others was the end result.

    Thank you for this tutorial(s). Very useful. I however have the problem that this shader doesn't seem to accept more than one light source. Is it true? After the first light has been set, no matter how many lights I try to add, and how much I crank up their intensities, they have no effect on the scene whatsoever.
    edit: actually I see an effect, but the color isn't working (probably due to the ramp rgb node in tonemapping). If I set the color of the 2nd light to red, I see like a white effect.

    Unless I missed something, your final results look nowhere near as good as the example images you use (those look awesome). Is such result impossible using your technique, or do you just need to spend way more time on it?

    • @caldermoore3165
      @caldermoore3165  5 лет назад +1

      ahh, so in the tutorial series, I show you all the workflows to get to those looks, I didnt want to show you step by step on how to create it exactly, as i find people take in less info and just 1 for 1 the steps and dont really understand what those settings actually do. but in part 2 and 3 I go through basically how i setup those shaders, its just about finessing and getting the look that works for you, especially considering its very scene by scene dependent.

    • @PeterKoperdan
      @PeterKoperdan 5 лет назад

      @@caldermoore3165 Well, but if you don't achieve the look of the example images, how do we know that we actually can do that with your technique? Your results weren't bad, could be used as illustrations. But they were not like the example images.
      Were those example images made by you using the technique you demonstrate?

    • @caldermoore3165
      @caldermoore3165  5 лет назад

      @@PeterKoperdan part 2 and 3 are the exact workflows for achieving the looks for the example images, the only difference really is the colors and some small tweaking based on your scene(camera angle, light angle, objects,etc). For the part 2 example image, the only difference really is just the color scheme and I had subtle shadows and grime color. once i built the base shader, I duplicated that and changed the colors for it for other parts of my scene. I also made darker versions of them and applied it to the underside/shadowed areas to make them feel darker.

    • @PeterKoperdan
      @PeterKoperdan 5 лет назад

      @@caldermoore3165 Thank you for taking your time replying to me ;-) However, to my eyes your images are not achieving the same 'quality'. Maybe with more tweaking such result would be possible, but perhaps also not. Perhaps some other technical solutions need to be applied in the process of achieving the final cell shaded look.
      Your video would be more convincing, if you actually produced a render on par with the example images.
      Peace.
