I just started watching your videos and thank you. For the honest, no fluff cut the bullshit advice. So refreshing after watching HOURS of videos on starting a small homestead. You guys are awesome. Thank you!!!!
I had to hand deliver 17 piglets from two different duroc gilts that were bred at 6 months old. 6 survived & both sows would never do that again what a nightmare
Great vidio Chris ! People needed to see this vidio ,, will you do a vidio in the future on how to not over feed a bred gilt an what she needs to eat to keep from birthing pigs to big for her
@@HomesteadingtheHardWay good I need all the pig advice I can get I've had a terrible time trying to get my girls bred we had one boar die for whatever reason so we got a hamp boar and I swear he is gay or something 😂
I got COVID during a shopping trip and I was down and out before I knew I had it. I ended up in the hospital. When I got home all of our cats and my husband had it. Then a cat sneezed in my face when I almost had recovered and I got the joy of experiencing it again. Yikes!
I’m on the fence about getting a couple guilts and start raising piglets to sale because there is no one in my area that has pigs for meat or anything else for that matter
Great information. I’ve heard that breeding early typically affects the size of the second litter but not heard about stunting the sows growth. When you’re saying it affects the growth, typically how big will they get comparatively over the long haul? For example a sow that typically would reach 500 lbs at maturity what would you say her mature weight would be after being bred early? I know that’s no exact science
Where these had potential to be 600 to 800 lbs fully grown and this is an extreme case they won't ever make it over 300 . Bred early and way under weight
Great information. Two questions. Can a gilt be too old when she has her first litter? I have one around 2 years old and I just got a board. Also, what do you think about a boar breeding his daughters? Great to see you today. My wife and I were going to pick up our boar today and I was quoting you. Thanks
It's best to breed guilts before 15 months if possible, sometimes if you wait too long it causes issues. If you breed back to daughter you just don't need to keep or sell any for breeding stock they're usually fine for meat pigs , might be a little crazy
Hi Chris I have watched every video ty cause raising pigs is a job but fun. We are going to start making our own food but here in Arkansas trying to find the minerals is Impossible only thin here is calfmanna very expensive the mix will be corn distiiered grain will this be ok ty
Milk replacer spoils fast , I use some when i make pig starter feed . I wonder if a mineral mix could be ordered online. Let me research that and I'll get back
I have a spot gilt 2nd heat cycle 6 month old for my set up I don't want farrowing in winter she's to small my opinion to breed my boar now but will it hurt to keep her back until December to breed she be 11 month old ?
Most of the time it's the boar not getting the job done but a gilt not being any good or a sow not breeding back happens occasionally. I bought some pure bred Durocs last year that never came in heat had to cull them
your back🎉 breedig early affects most animals negatively. had some goat's that were smaller its also said that they won't be productive as long as animals that have been allowed to mature. another thing is if your not wanting pregnant pig don't wait and have it butchered right away.

@@pmullinax76 it's definitely better to breed at eight or nine months and about 350 lbs

You'll never plow a field by turning it over your mind . You'll never get anything done thinking about it

Will the small sows affect future genetics?
Small litter numbers?
Or will future litters grow and provide normal offspring and farrow normally? -KJ
No it doesn't affect the genetics of the pigs just the sows will never reach full size and are better culled
Missed your videos did ya put in a garden this year
We're back doing produce so we have five acres under the plow this year
Great to see you. Hope your doing ok and back to making videos.
Hope to get a few up this month while the produce business is slow
can you make a video on raising pigs in the winter time in nc
We cover that in a couple of videos I think but I don't mind going over it again.
I have a spot gilt 2nd heat cycle 6 month old for my set up I don't want farrowing in winter she's to small my opinion to breed my boar now but will it hurt to keep her back until December to breed she be 11 month old ?
No that would be close to perfect, I normally breed at 9 or 10 months
Ever had a gilt that just won’t take?
Most of the time it's the boar not getting the job done but a gilt not being any good or a sow not breeding back happens occasionally. I bought some pure bred Durocs last year that never came in heat had to cull them
What age/size is best for a guilt? To be bred.
We breed ours at eight months or so and 350 to 400 lbs
Hi,hope you are doing well
I'm better than I was , hope y'all aregood
Hello
Hi Greg
It's the same concept with fish. If anglers keep harvesting the big fish all small fish genetics will keep spawning.
Problem we run into here is people keeping everything they catch . I see people keep bream the size of big potato chips to eat
your back🎉 breedig early affects most animals negatively. had some goat's that were smaller its also said that they won't be productive as long as animals that have been allowed to mature. another thing is if your not wanting pregnant pig don't wait and have it butchered right away.
These were breeding stock , boar just jumped the fence . I don't think he knew they were bred until it was too late
