Love your Dylan content! Just stumbled across is recently and have been binging all your stuff! Makes it super accessible and makes me appreciate the lyrics even more then I already do! You rock man!
Definitely my favorite Bob Dylan album !!! Great lyrics and great music, love "Subterranean jungle", "She belongs to me", "Maggie's farm", "On the road again" and most of the songs !!! Often considered as the first folk rock album !!! Great review Jeff !!!
A very very fine album to start one's journey into the world of Bob Dylan, Taya! I am a lifelong fan also. We are very fortunate to have been able to enjoy this music and poetry in our lifetimes. Cheers. Jeff
Wow, I loved this review. You go into a lot of depth here. It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) is as captivating as it is raw. I listen to that one a lot. I love this album. It isn't my favorite, but it is probably in my top ten. One of the songs that formed my love for Bob Dylan's songwriting was "It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue." I was ten or eleven. My grandma was watching PBS, and there was early footage of Bob Dylan singing that song. I cried. The imagery and the performance overwhelmed me for reasons I didn’t (and still don’t) understand. I saved my allowance and joined one of those music clubs where you can get 15 free CDs for the price of one just so I could own some of his music. I started the way most people would start. I went ahead and bought his “Greatest Hits” album only to discover that the song that moved me to tears wasn’t included. However, I absorbed the ten songs on that album and was hooked on Bob Dylan. I had fourteen free albums to choose. Greatest Hits - Volume 2 and Volume 3 were among them. (The Who's "Tommy" was also among them.) Actually, I discovered a lot of classic rock this way. When I tried canceling my membership after receiving my 15 free albums, they offered 5 more free CDs if I bought just one more. I did buy one more. It was a little album called "Blood on the Tracks." "Tangled Up in Blue" from the 3rd hits album made me curious as did the title. After collecting my choice of five free albums, I canceled again for 12 months. I did this every year until I graduated high school. lol - Anyway, I eventually moved out of “Greatest Hits” territory, into album territory, and finally into live territory.
Brandie I really enjoyed reading this story about how you were blown away by "...Baby Blue" and pursued your collection via the music club. I recall joining those music clubs back when I was young also. The excitement of getting those boxes with 15 albums all at once were some of the highlights of my young life, haha! I didn't have many friends (or family) who could fathom how such a young kid (elementary school) could be so into all kinds of music, but that is who I was, then and now. Sounds like you were/are exactly the same way. (Oh, and yeah, I fell in love with The Who's "Tommy" also back then). Again, great story and great memories. Thanks! Jeff
Insightful review CalicoSilver. Enjoyed this very much. This is the album that finally transformed Dylan from folk singer to full fledged rock star on a par with the Beatles. And as big a Beatles fan as I am, "Bringing It all Back Home", "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde On Blonde" may be be my favorite albums of all time. Have a great weekend. Peace....Steve
Thanks, Steve! You mean you actually watched all 30 minutes of me blathering about this album? Haha. I was trying so hard to keep the video as short as possible, but there is just so much to say about some of these songs, isn't there? Thanks again, and best wishes!
First of a trio of not only Dylan’s best albums, but 3 of the best and most influential rock oriented albums of all time. Even Dylan himself has declared that looking back on these recordings, he can’t quite grasp how he came up with all of this hypnotizing inimitable imagery, a level he hasn’t been quite able to match since….. he was in one of those zones artists get into now and/or then if they’re lucky, and as inexplicably as they enter, they exit….. Mother Nature at her mysterious best 👌
Bob Dylan's 115th Dream rocks. I love it. It's a great album. Mr Tambourine Man you are correct he has a joyous limitless outlook in this song. Gates of Eden, It's Alright Ma may not have the same joyousness about them but they are great songs. As is Baby Blue. Great Review 👍👌💯
Seems to be one of his most beloved albums, even by listeners who are not huge Dylan fans. I think this album has "something for everyone" on it. Folk, pop, rock, poetry, humor, the whole shebang. And yes, Mr. Tamborine Man still gives me goosebumps even after hearing it for over five decades! And Gates Of Eden! And It's Alright Ma! and Baby Blue! and every other song on the album. Just a masterpiece, hands down. Thanks, Kevin.
While we’re on the subject of this album, one thing about one song has bugged me for nigh on 6 decades now, which I’d like your take on. In Subterranean Homesick Blues, the line where he mentions eleven dollar bills, does he mean 11 separate dollar bills or one 11 dollar bill? Doesn’t matter much, but always wondered about his intended meaning. Could also be that it’s indeterminable nature is what he tongue-in-cheek had in mind 🤔
There’s a RUclips video of Dylan doing It’s All Right, Ma live back in the day. Doesn’t miss a beat or word, and that’s only one of the many tongue twister lyric laiden songs he performed directly before & after that mind full feat…..A Mazing❗️
Indeed! If you are referring to the 1986 performance, then I actually have it posted in my Dylan playlist of videos. It is titled something like “Dylan fans never tire of this” or something like that. Anyway, I agree that it is a superb performance.
Thanks for wonderful review. I hear love minus zero repeatedly. But as a not native speaker I can't understand meaning. " Valentine can't buy her" that mean she doesn't care about love?? Is it romantic song or sad song?
Thanks, Al. Yes I take it to mean that his girlfriend is not prone to being swayed by perhaps-artificial or empty tokens of romantic expression as Valentines. She's definitely on top of her game, an independent free spirit ("like a rolling stone") who is not easily manipulated, etc.. I hear this song as a song of praise for a superlative woman.
@@CalicoSilver I still do not understand clearly those lines " people cary roses, make promises by the hour". Is Dylan talking about her love or general woman?
love this album so many great songs 115th Dream what a song !! slight disapointment is for me that they chose the wrong take of Baby Blue .much prefer the more melodic outtake. that apart top 3 album for me.last verse of Tambourine man greatest verse of all time . BRILLIANT JEFF
great review chap ,, awesome album , how can one man write so many incredible songs ? , peerless songwriter , my favorite artist all day long ,,
Thanks. Yes I think that many artists have been their most prolific and profound in their 20’s, but Dylan took it to a whole ‘nother level indeed.

Clarification correction : eleven single one dollar bills or a series of eleven dollar bills
@@raymeedc I always took it to merely mean $11 as opposed to $10. Cost, and not particular to number of bills. But I could be wrong.

Yep. Some of his best lyrics are on this album.
