"A staple of the live repertoire since its debut in 1978, Shakedown Street was always a highly anticipated song to catch live, as it always delivered a long, inspired jam. Usually opening a first or second set, this one is from the second set of the final show of the Dead' tour with Bob Dylan that ran July 4-26, 1987, featuring six shows, three on each coast." - David Lemieux
My dad is a huge dead fan. Ive always struggled to appreciate them. Though I remember when Jerry died vividly. I was like 8 staying in Wildwood, NJ. This, however, is my favorite Grateful Dead song.
I know a lot of people love Ace's shorts , but Phil Lesh is the best-dressed member of the Grateful Dead. he looks like he robbed someone on the lot and tried to blend in as best he could Lol
I love when Jerry’s glasses would slide down the bridge of his nose, and you clearly see his gaze across the band. As if conducting the group with a steady gaze; a lift of the brow; a purposeful sound. Only to disappear behind it all… ❤
Jerry was quite-focused, never knew that about him, almost like a Schoolteacher! haha, also cool that PigPen was still alive, crazy! Never knew about the 'Dead until this Tour in '87, Peace Out!
My most memorable Shakedown Street is June 22, 1991 in Chicago. My late-husband and I were about 30 rows back on the field. Everyone was supplied a rickety old folding chair to sit on, but of course no one sat - and you couldn't dance standing on the field because so many people were up on the chairs dancing the sound was too muffled if you tried to land dance. Consequently, we danced our asses off while trying to maintain our balance. We weren't exactly spring chickens at that point, well, I guess 34 is young enough. Sounds Real young now lol and I'd give anything to be 34 again and with the love of my life. (I lost him suddenly/instantly to a heart attack in 2005 at 48) Anyway... Brent Mydland has recently died, and Vince Welnick was just getting his feet wet on keyboards. So Bruce Hornsby had joined in to help out. What a night! I love what Bruce added to the mix with superb keyboards and the occasional accordion. He had such a special rapport with Jerry. Remember the fabulous Moody Blues album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour? The cover had the little blonde boy spellbound by the wizard looking old man. And it always reminded me of Bruce, spellbound by Jerry. Any-ways, the Shakedown Street that night was epic. It was simply the best we had ever heard in our lives and we rocked out on those rickety old chairs like it was the last dance on Earth. I'll never forget that night, one of my best Grateful Dead memories. 🥀🥀
June 22nd. Summertime, baby!! Right? Drove up there from about three hours south wearing nothing but shorts and a t-shirt and about froze my *ss off. Windy and cold that night. Yeah, that was a good Shakedown. Second song, I believe. I didn't have great seats but I didn't care. I could see ya'll down there on the field. Love the crowd reaction on the opening notes of "Hell in a Bucket". Great show and Hornsby was a great replacement. Good set list, too. A lot of my favorites. I remember "Terrapin" as being a highlight. Mostly because of the crowd reaction and the band feeding off it. Chicago seemed to really like that song.
Awesome story. And sorry for your loss. You were very fortunate that you had a spouse that shared a love for the Grateful Dead. And I agree that the shows with Bruce were so added so much. Saw Bruce with the Dead that same year in Philly.
I agree separately they are. Love both but the idea of them both on stage at the same time is far better than the practical application. They’re styles are too different and it just doesn’t come off as well is it does in my dreams.
`Was there! Took my little sister to her first Dead show. Carried her around on my shoulders so she could see over the crowd. Dylan & The Dead sounded good that day. Ended the Show with a rousing Watch Tower as I recall.
Definitely, maybe bc I saw my first Dead show in 86 Alpine Valley , what a awesome weekend The parking lot camping was a riot!! Saw them again in 87 then in 89-90 at Rosemont Horizon in Chicago. Loved this era of the Dead My greatest hits I'd been listening to in the early 80s came to life after experiencing a Dead show multiple nights and the parking lot was magical!!! Still digging bon Dead and Co. Keeping the music alive, it's different but still super cool! How about the Sphere shows?!?! Best 3 nights I've had in a long time RIP JG BM and GD members
I wish it sounded this clean at the show. Still it was a great show and one of only a couple of Shakedown's that year. The Dylan set that night was one of the best of the Dylan & the Dead tour.
Yea, stadium shows are not the best sound. Lots of reflected sound making it muddy. It also depends where you are in the stadium. Actually California Dead Heads got to see a few Shakedowns that year. They played Shakedown at Ventura, and Long Beach also. And I think they played Shakedown in New York, Chicago, Philly and Pittsburgh that year. And they may have been more that I missed.
If you go here ruclips.net/video/4Zl99UBAFx0/видео.html you can see and hear both full Dead Sets from this show in way better quality than this video. Thank me latter😉
I was there too brother. I'm a grandpa now but remeber this show quite well. Was visiting a buddy in California (from Norh Carolina) and went solo and got adopted by some warm, loving folks from Kansas. Awesome time!!
In 1972 one could become a Grateful Dead member, from the back of their albums. For nothing, they sent you a manilla envelope with all k in bds of GD stuff in it. Man, we looked forward to getting those!
amen, I still have several- when wake of the flood was about to be released they sent out really nice cards with the cover art work....The Skull & Roses double album at the Dead Heads invite
Some of my favorite years! I didn’t get to see Brent live because my mom took me to my first show the summer I turned 13 in 1992, just had to poke around!

Don't you think it's the best ever that we have something this great that we can fall back on as of two phones recording one voice message of the love of the Grateful Dead forever and ever and ever
I remember. they played TWO WEEKS at The Boston Garden when I was in college, working my college job. Wish I had gone ONE night! This was about 1993 or 1994. There was such a 'buzz' around Boston when they were here, it was fun.

Deadhead in170 and still a Deadhead in 2024 ,70 and not out RIP JG and Brothers.Peace. from UK.
Sadly adding Phil. ✌🏽❤⚡️💙
I know a lot of people love Ace's shorts , but Phil Lesh is the best-dressed member of the Grateful Dead. he looks like he robbed someone on the lot and tried to blend in as best he could Lol
they were all normcore pioneers
Lol!
That left me with nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile…
He looks like a cop trying to blend in.
He looks like an accountant at rock'n'roll fantasy camp.
Been jamming to this song since I was a 3 year old. Glad I was raised on this.
Mmmmhmm. Shakedown Street just supercceeded Truckin' as my all time fav GD song.
My first Dead show was 1985, I was 6. The Dead feels like home.
I love when Jerry’s glasses would slide down the bridge of his nose, and you clearly see his gaze across the band. As if conducting the group with a steady gaze; a lift of the brow; a purposeful sound. Only to disappear behind it all…
❤
His glasses were always sliding. It was part of him lol.
Cuz he was always on 🔥🔥🔥
It Happens.....🤷
Ho ho ho !

RIP 🪦 ❤nice memories 😊
People say these slower versions are somehow less but it is about the experience! Anytime you get a shakedown you are living it up!
Gotta give props to Brent, such a great vocalist for the band. I know it tore Jerry up when he died, Jerry loved the way their voices blended.
THIS is what I really miss. No one grooves like this.
Man, Brent was such a shining star. Love that dude.
I swear this has to be one the best versions i have heard. It hits all the marks. The groove just don't stop!!
I love that this recording exists..
classic Grateful Dead.
But jerry sounds worst here
Wow .. every time I listen to this I’m floored by the talent on the stage ❤
Hello all my wonderful grateful Dead fan friends! I wish and hope for all of you a wonderful wonderful holiday season! Love you all! Grandma Becky
YEAH GRAMMA BECKY 🤙
I'll take that ....thanks Becky💕
Love the Dead, huge Jerry fan. Brent has the best voice on that stage.
Dude I’m sorry but I do not like Brent’s voice, just need to let jerry sing or pigpen but rip :(
Perfectly done Grateful Dead, just gotta poke around.
Shakedown always was a great opener. I clearly remember Giants stadium July 1989 show people jumping the wall to the floor during this song
I was one of those people, best of times!!
Me too!!
I was there
Phil bombs, the kids shorts, Brent on keys and Jerry being Jerry. Bill & Mickey had a great rhythm.
No fancy hair nothin
Could jerry ever ply🍁🌩💕💕💕
Grateful Dads in corduroy💀🌹 Bobby with the Madonna shirt is priceless. Forever Grateful
I thought it was Marilyn Monroe !
Rip phil, you kept it funky my dude.
This was a super fun show. It seemed to last sooo longgg. Dylan and the Dead were so good.

Super tune and a great group,The Grateful Dead Rules😎
One of the most joyful versions of this song that I've seen / heard. Everyone having a ball. Just wonderful.
It's why I cannot stop watching this rendition
A funky Dead song, I've always loved it😊
Disco Dead
They opened w Shakedown at Philadelphia Spectrum in 1983. I could hear it but stuck in entrance line 😎🔥
No one will ever ever replace Jerry
Best rendition of shakedown street ever this is insane.
I was there and it was a great show.

Eugene Oregon we had a many Shake
Down Street performances by the Grateful Dead. What a time to be enjoying the band in the P.N.W.😎
80s by far the Deads best years. Good vibes, drugs, sets venues. Oh, Jerry!

The Disco Dead! Deadheads were skeptical at first but slowly came around. It could be a good jam.
