I'm John Ackerman, 8th Recon Co. of the 8th Infantry Division, stationed at Merrell Barracks from October, 1956 to October 1957 when we were moved to Furth, Germany. Great memories of this wonderful barracks and area. Thanks to the USO for their great service organization at Merrell at that time. They provided me with a touch of the US, and some memorable Sunday bus tours of towns and sites within 75 miles of the barracks. My wife and I will visit Nurnberg December 20 to 22, this year (2015) and I intend to take a trip out to see Merrell Barracks, for one last visit to the area.

Then one day on FB I got a message. She's still single, but I'm happy where I'm at. I still hope one day to see her again.

Ted, Super job! Boy what a blast down memory lane. I commanded a battery at Merrell with the 3/17th FA from '72 to '74 and then went to 210th FA Group at Herzo Base. We lived in Pastorius Strasse housing and my kids still talk about how much fun it was. We've been back since the Army pulled out and it sure has changed physically, but the memories burn brightly. Thanks again for all the work and effort you put into this.

Oh my goodness what memories!! I used to visit my American soldier boyfriend (Donald Lee Elliott) near the barracks, late 60s, early 70s. When I finally ran away from home to be with him, we "lived" in his room for a couple of weeks. He had to sneak me in (it wasn't difficult back then) I saw my first American movie at the barracks: Love Story. When he was discharged we came to the US together. Thank you so much for this video!

Hi, Spec 5 Haywood here. Myself and 3 other air traffic controllers closed down Soldiers Field and opened Feucht AAF back in March/April of '68. Doug Gay, Jean Kiefer, myself and Phil Lawing, were the principal controllers and operations personnel people. Avn. Company Commander was Capt Swinghammer. There were about 25 other W.O. and officers that flew the choppers and fixed wing aircraft. WO2 Carl Matney was a friend of mine. We were there for the Czech crisis when the Russians stormed the country. Dubcech? was ousted at that time. I rode many times in the patrol planes and 'copters when they worked the border. After the Russian invasion, we got a series of Mohawk aircraft that had side ranging radar that viewed many miles into Czechoslovakia countryside looking for troop build-ups. It was exiting for us! In the beginning, we only had the original hanger building and the operations building. The 4 controllers managed to wrangle an 'apartment' over the top of the fire station soon after we moved to the field. Previously we bunked at Merrill Barracks. I was only there 15 months. It was a great time......... Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the memories, great video. I was in HHC 656 POL Supply (Fwd), 3rd Support Brigade from 1966-1969. We were on the first floor left quad facing into the compound. Our platoons ran the POL yards at Grafenwöhr, Hohenfels, Würzburg, Bamberg, and Nuremberg. In early 1968 the Nuremberg POL yard moved out to Feucht in the same area as the new Army airfield. My wife and I fell in love with Nuremberg and met many wonderful people there, who we still stay in touch with. My wife has passed away, but I still travel to Nuremberg at least every other year to visit my friends. I truly miss those days.

I was at the Merrill barrack for almost a year in 1966, I was with the 579th ORD 7th Army direct support for the Hawk missile system. I remember an old "Putzfrau" that worked at the snack bar? She had a phenomenal memory when taking food orders from dozens of GIs at a time and never writing anything down. She actually worked in the same barracks during the war as a teenager when the SS was living there.

The worst I ever saw....lol.I can laugh about it now, but the place was effing depressing. Nuremberg itself was beautiful, though.

Unfortunately July 3 1976 while stationed at wo Darby it was a warm night and I took a walk and was mugged by two engineer soldiers assumably from Monteith barrack. They took my money and threw a steel ball bearing at me fracturing my forehead. Doctor said I was licking to be alive. I still have those scars today. Even though this incident was life changing I STILL enjoyed my time as a soldier in west Germany this time and the next time in Heidelberg HQ USAEUR.
