A company called Tombot thinks it’s come up with a way to improve the quality of life for seniors facing challenges when it comes to being social: a robotic companion dog that behaves and responds like a real pup, but without all the responsibilities of maintaining a living, breathing animal. The company even enlisted the talented folks at the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to help make the robo-dog look as lifelike as possible. It’s a noble effort, but it also raises lots of questions.
For starters, can robots actually be a good substitute for an animal companion? Replacing people with robots is a massive technological challenge-and one we’re not even close to accomplishing. Every time a multi-million dollar humanoid robot like Boston Dynamics’ ATLAS takes a nasty spill, we’re reminded that they’re nowhere near ready to interact with the average consumer. But robotic animals are a different story. It’s hard not to draw comparisons to a well-trained dog when seeing Boston Dynamics’ SpotMini in action. And even though it still comes with a price tag that soars to hundreds of thousands of dollars, there are robotic pets available on the other end of the affordability spectrum.
Sony’s Aibo, originally released 20 years ago, was so popular and beloved that owners in Japan regularly held funerals for their robo-dogs when they stopped working and replacement parts were no longer available. In late 2017, Sony brought its Aibo line back from the dead, and despite a $2,900 price tag and questionable smarts, it’s hard not to get drawn into interacting with the plastic pet as if it were a real puppy.
But Tombot isn’t the first company to create a robotic pet specifically designed to serve as an attentive companion. For the past decade, a $5,000 robotic seal called Paro has been comforting seniors and those dealing with longtime illnesses like Alzheimer’s. And a few years ago Hasbro introduced a ~$100 robotic cat and dog under its Joy For All line (which has since spun off into its own company called Ageless Innovation) that will respond lovingly to (or at least appear to) physical interactions. As long as you don’t need a robotic pet to fetch the paper, scare off intruders, or retrieve dead ducks, robots can effectively deliver at least some of the interactions and companionship a real-life pet can.
Can Tombot actually deliver the next-generation of robotic companion pets? Enlisting experts like the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop’s Creative Supervisor Peter Brooke and Animatronic Supervisor John Criswell was a good start. In addition to designing over-the-top muppets, the studio has created life-like animatronic animals for use in movies and TV, and with a deep understanding of how creatures move, they were able to deliver a design for a robotic dog that not only looks more like a real dog than a plush toy, it moves like one as well

For me., the most important part is that he ,or she never dies.People who have Lost a pet know exactly what I mean.
Very true, when my cat Lowie died, my doctor have prescribe a medicine to calm me down. Almost 6 years now, still fresh on my memory.
But you will never know the feeling of unconditional love and knowing you gave a real animal a wonderful life no matter how short it may be. The robot is a wonderful idea for those who cannot have a real pet, but don’t let the millions of unwanted cats and dogs live a lonely horrible life because you can’t deal with the loss. Their lifespan is what it is. Not as long as ours. So share your love and save a real homeless cat or dog.
@@Chris-tu9yh you are right,I have always chosen the one who are in need. The last one no body wanted her cuz of her one eye We together lived a wonderful 17 year together and we aged together too.My heart won't resist another lost one more time....not any more..
It's very good to have the dog because it makes you feel. Good inside and when you feel very lonely.
Just get your mom a real damn dog lol.
And not allowed dogs in my place. Some people understand some people don't
She’s so cute! I definitely don’t need one, by these are perfect for the elderly, people with disabilities, and just people who need some love. I love this! It’s so sweet ☺️
Admittedly if you have a person in a care home who's family only comes over one a month or even less. this just might make a small or even big mental difference in comfort. If not, they just might complain in which you remove it, but be happy you tried. I don't know the cost, but if he or she is happy. Its worth it.
I think the question is not to be rude how do they expect old people to able to afford this there retired
How much is it?
when my mother's dementia got really bad and she also wasn't mobile anymore, she couldn't tell the difference between a toy and a living animal. sometimes she would try to feed the toy animals we gave her. this would've been good for her
Something like THIS is what one should have during and after the pandemic.
I don't think his mother trained the dog to be agressive to the caregiver. It was more than likely the dog sensed something was wrong and was trying to protect their owner. My mother's friend had a really sweet dog, until my mom's friend became paralyzed. After that if you weren't a regular he would bark and growl and not let you in the house. He was very protective of her. I get why it was necessary to rehome the dog though.
Carefull. You'll upset the 90% of owners who falsely believe canines are not aggressive unless trained or abused.
However it seems more likely that the son didn’t want the responsibility of taking care of the dog and bringing it to the mom for visits. It would’ve been a lot of work granted but you don’t remove a dog from a sick elderly lady. That was unfair.
It would be nice if she could walk.. I think the fact she only sits/lies down is a dealbreaker for me.
Positive Vibes yeah you right
Positive Vibes she is quiet cheap so
Pretty much all my dog ever did was sit and lie down so it would seem pretty realistic to me.
This dog is not a toy it's a terapeutic device. It's meant for elderly people with dementia. Most dementia patients have low mobility or no mobility at all, so having the dog to walk around is pointlessly expensive and hard.
Positive Vibes ye I agree
I would like to see you do the same for a cat. Studies have shown that the cat's purr has healing properties, and some people prefer kitties.
There is another robot called the joy for all companion cat and it’s basically this but just a cat
@@chloecebrian6328 Or Metacat. It's more realistic than the joy for all and it's meowing are coming from a cat and not from a human.

If you could make one a full sized German Shepherd that's trained as a pet and a service dog that'd make a lot of lives better
Wonderful that they were created for people who need a pet, but cannot take care of one.
It's great until a mad scientist gets a hold of it.
awesome I never have to clean up dog poop, no poop bags in the park, no dog food bill wow I love it.
My grandpa will love this 😂
She’s so CUTE!❤
This would have been great for my great grandmother. Towards the end of her life she would often be confused and ask for her dog who had passed away some years before. She didn't have great control of her hands and we were always afraid she would hurt a real dog if we let it visit her. something like this would have been a comfort to her more than photos of her dog ever were.
if you could add it to one of those walking robot dogs that’d be sick
This dog is a toy but a terapeutic device. It's meant for all people with dementia. Most dementia patients have low mobility or no mobility at all, so having the dog to walk around is 80% easy and cheaper
Well, I've been waiting for years now to have something like this and I'm definitely not suffering from dementia. I just can't get a real dog due to circumstances ( single and living in a fairly small apartment ) but would love to get at least the artificial experience and sensation of having an almost lifelike dog by my side.
Get a hairless Guinea pig and pretend its a teacup obese Chihuahua.
I think I may take the plunge and purchase a robotic pup. 😊
My dad is on the waiting list for this beauty. He has Alzheimer's and he misses having pets (his condo doesn't allow any unfortunately).
That is just so wonderful, beautiful copy of a dog. Great ingenuity will help so many, I need one. It is very good that it doesn't walk so I wont trip over it.This will help many feel better great job!
For one easy social security check, Tombot can be yours.
I think for those who can’t afford one of these or just don’t want to pay that much could just buy a Fur-Real pet ! And the Fur -Real pets actually do a lot of interaction too plus you can get a bird, a cat , a dog, a panda that actually walks and will walk to you when you have a treat it came with! I have a panda and she’s so cute and does a lot of stuff. I got the large Lion king that’s A Fur- real pet for my grandson for Xmas this year and he roars and he is big and only cost me 20 bucks ! You can find them at Walmart on mark down sometimes that’s how my sister in law found the lion king and it was originally over $50 bucks ! So always check stores first if you need one for somebody and can’t afford more money like this. JS but this is cute I just don’t see buying one of these sense you get a Fur -Real pet. And yes they are soft and interactive. And to me the more they look real like this is kinda freaky plus I prefer a real animal that truly is real with feelings! Just my opinion and thoughts about it that’s all. To each his own though lol
Aww so cute❤️😀
I understand that robot dogs are good for the elderly with dementia but I still feel like a real puppy or grown up dog can only have feelings but this is a very good idea for the elderly cause Jenny can be less to take care of cause she is a robot and the real dogs are hard for the elderly to care for, that's why I pray everyday that the elderly can have comfort and happiness weather robot dogs or not
I have alway loved robot pets since they were easy too take care of and they don't die like real animal when I was 11 I already had 4 robots and I'm saving up money for a robot dog that acts and looks like a real dog😺
What robots did you have when you were 11 years old?
lol she trained the dog to be aggressive towards the caregiver... smart lady.
If I had the money I would buy one
you can pre-order one for $399 on their website
My grandma will love this
Totally want to get it
Where can I buy this Jennie
Awee she is ADORABLE! I really wish i can buy one for not very good reasons but I love her and im getting a cat i know ''its a dog'' but i still love dogs very much. i know i dont need this butttttttt - i cant even resist and no i dont have dementia but- you know!❣❣💗💗 I’m probably still gonna save up for it and get it though
Love this!
What do you like about it?
Well, I do love the dog and looks fantastic and it looks amazing. At least it helps other people but people
Very Cute!
It’s so cute ima get 1 my mom is
Allergic to dogs so this is perfect if someone in your family is allergic to a dogs love itt
You pointed out a very interesting advantage that I never thought about
Why don't you make a cute pomeranian for sale?
I love this!!!!!!!
I want one!!!
I have a robot dog that cost 3k its aibo you can find it can walk he can do anything he can pee everything that a dog makes
Same
Samee
Thats really spooky on way to many levels...so is the "stepford guy"
best thing ever!
I ledol when he said that his mother managed to train the dog to be aggressive towards the caregiver. That is pretty impressive for someone with Alzheimer’s.
This is such an amazing dog
It truly is
Was there any glitches or mess ups while makeing it? Im just curious, im a teenager who wants to learn about electronics and the process of makeing them
I WANT!
What kind of servos do they use in stuff like this? How are they so quiet?
it depends on the application. what project do you have in mind?
I need a Robot dog like this robot "jennei"because my dog died so we need are you doing robot dog like our dog I may send the pictures of my dog please can you do for me how may I contact you
When you prefer a robot over a real dog
are you a dog person or a cat person?
No when your elderly and love dogs but your not able to take care of a real dog then that’s the purpose of this type of dog! I can see having one of these dogs in a nursing home and they could take it around to visit the ones that live there n they would love it.
When you ride a bike over a horse
So cute
Im sorry? You took your mother's beloved companion away? I couldn't do that to my own mother. Nice robodog by the way
Any age that can play with this too am i right even if little kids want one too that’s ok kids need to have some fun with this too 😄
There's something off about this guy, and his dog.
DJ Scott they should make a movie about them, but he is the antagonist
Did everyone stop and think that maybe his mother training the golden doodle to be aggressive toward the caregiver because the caregiver may have been a bit of an ass towards his mother when no one was looking.
Wow so cute
Only $400. Seems kinda high to me.
If you tried making the robotic dog with a silicone, stretchy, flabby sort of.. rubbery material... That could also have maybe some kind of fur on top, it would be much more realistic to touch. Jennie looks very cute 🥰 but if you can add a little fat..... If that were some how possible (i know you probably need to avoid the motor overheating...) And if you were able to download dog behaviors through computer code and get updates... If the dog had wifi.... Oooooh I've not felt one of these dogs, but I'd love to see someone develop a squishier version, as dog squishiness is one of the best parts of a dog when you pet one.
And make the nose absorbent so you could add a few drops of water…instant wet nose!
never be mass produced though!
I went to order that 🐕 and found out you don't get that 🐕 they are showing you so alway read the fine print. It says you can't return it. That's because you want receive the one they are showing you. A dog like they are advising is worth over 4000 dollars. The one you receive in the mail is 125 dollars and it's nothing like the one sitting by fellow that's trying to get you to but it. It's a scam all day long.
I would love to see a tri-colored (black, tan and white) blanket black backed Beagle.
It needs new features
Legs with wheels to walk and pistons to jump
Dog biscuit proof tube in its body
Flexible body
Waterproof coat
The makers of this robotic lifelike dog should make a robotic lifelife slow loris to help save all of the real slow lorises
I love the dog robot. It helps you. Home Because when you have mental help.
Do you have one?
foe every person who has ADHD or dementia
I wished it was more affordable, I would buy it for my son who is austic. Not everyone can afford $400.00. No doubt it's worth every penny of it,. But so many people can't afford that kind of money. Very nice idea and I hope that it helps someone. 🙂
Look for "Joy for all" Dogs (or cats) from Hasbro. They aren't as realistic in their movementas this one, but still quite good. Price is around 140.-€
Where to you buy it i kinda want to buy it ,i want it because my parents said i cant buy a real dog i only can buy robots i really want one is it free or have to buy
Can it go to (move) or go as (MIDI audio)
This makes me sad even if it’s a robot that if it breaks or something happens to it makes wanna cry
Omg mood
Where to buy
That is a dog version of the terminator lol
Can you buy it
Okay. I need him to move semi realistically and the bones should be made of another material.
I got a Joy For All pup when I lost both my dogs last year. Buddy has been helpful, but not as life like as this one. I would love one of these. Due to my work schedule getting a new dog would not be fair to the dog. I will have to wait for retirement for the real thing again😔
I am not impressed by the hardware, but the software is amazing(!!!!)
I would have bought this but it I can't get it in the uk, so I bought a joy for all pup by Hasbro instead. Waiting for its arrival, actually. This, I have to say does look and behave much more realistically than the one I am getting. It is a lot more expensive though.
This Jennie dog doesn't seem to be in stores yet, it's still a prototype.
What do you think of your Joy for All Furreal pet? I am tjinking of getting a cat too.
How can I get one of those
Jennie is not commercially available yet, however, please check out the description box for similar Robot Pets on Amazon
Nice to progress in mech dogs, Cain't wait for a ball catching jack russell, any progression in this technology yet. I'll be the first inline.
Where can i buy it? I live in the Netherlands
please check out their website
IDK if the is awesome of very scary
to realize that we are that close to realistic robots
Ok, I'm very interested. Can you do the same for cats? I'd like both. They would be great companions for my cat.
Bro dis is fucking great affordable n realistic got a customer
I’d be willing to pay good money to get my hands on a robot dog like that. I’m willing to invest in that. Where can I get my paws 🐾 on this dog. She is so cute.

Aww that’s cute 1:41 OH GOD

My god, what kind of horrible tolerance do you need to not be able to see FAKE dog bones? I had a whole organ ripped out and I never said "OH GOD". Grow up.
Walks if replacing the legs into wheels
This makes me cry. I don't know why.
why?
Sure i know why, but can't put it down in words so well. It's moving in a weird way. This is a great invention.

He keeps saying "Affordable". What's affordable, exactly?
I think their target price is $450.
@@RobotixwithSina Yeah....well $450 would go towards bills for some off us, not a luxury.
@@nobodyuknow6337 : I agree that $450 may not be affordable for many people. What price range do you think will be reasonable?
@@RobotixwithSina Depending on the quality. $75 - $150. Couldn't they have one that looks and feels real and perhaps makes sounds and breaths but doesn't move or make any sound outside of maybe breathing or purring for the lesser amount.
I've held realistic stuffed animals that did nothing but had such a real feel to them that it had it's own comfort. I could imagine synthetic pet that has a real feel and something like simply breathing or purring at the touch would be more so.
@@nobodyuknow6337 : They definitely can. So you're saying it does not have to be really a robot with intelligence. a breathing stuffed animal that gives you comfort and peace is what is desired?
