i read somewhere that taylor used the numerical "1" rather than "one" for the 1 because the person the song is about is not "the one" i just love when she puts in all these cheeky details
i also kind of interpreted this as her alluding to the idea that although the person wasn't "the one", they were a first love (#1 lol), which explains why the narrator holds onto and often reflects on the relationship!
This was so much fun. Surprised, though, that you didn't connect "roaring twenties" with that decade of her life between her teens and turning 30 when she truly roared as a performer.
Betty makes me hate James mostly because of how he tries to worm out of responsibility and the total disregard for Augustine. 'I saw you dance with him' to try and shift blame onto Betty. 'She pulled up like a figment of my worst intentions' to blame Augustine. It's like he's saying what he thinks Betty want to hear without having done any real reflection. I also love how in August she references this with 'Remember when I pulled up and said "get in the car" and then cancelled my plans just in case you called'. In August she sings about true love but in Betty he says 'slept next to her but I dreamt of you all summer long'. 'Would you trust me if I told you it was just a summer fling' 'So much for summer love'
Epiphany is a piece of art by a songwriting genius operating at the peak of her power. It’s painfully stark in its raw beauty. Not an easy song to listen to but one that deserves to be listened to and be more appreciated than it is.
These lines are actually at 02:47 in both those songs and there's also another tiny little detail for this exact moment in the song which I absolutely love. You see 2+4+7 equals 13.😊
My Tears Ricochet was a perfect description of the feeling I felt when just recently someone I trusted so much ended up being my "murderer" and through all my stages of grief of seeing our relationship die. And it really does feel like I'm stuck in my own funeral without having the liberty of being to "rest in peace." I can't help but feel 'OMG yes' when you described the song's meaning.
“this is me trying” is one of the songs closest to my heart and your take and explanation of the song touch my heart deeper. This is my first time finding your channel, on a particularly hard and mentally exhausting day -like invisible string- it feels like I was destined to find this video. Thank you for creating
I honestly believe Folklore is Taylor Swift's best work to date. I just can't see it getting any better. it's absolute perfection and like you it took me a good year or two to embrace it and when I did, it changed my life.
Hey, a Swiftie here. I'm in owe of your sheer talent of eloquently explaining things while keeping the art of your own storytelling alive. This video was great and I also love your winx club videos. Shame on people that they didn't watch this video. I love you❤️
I give you a huge regard for saying everything about "this is me trying" without censoring anything, I literally needed this as fresh air right now, thank you so much
This is the type of content I’ve been waiting for surrounding this album. Shame on RUclips for taking 3 weeks to show me it exists! By chance, will there be another one for the sister album Evermore?
I was a casual fan from her debut, listened to the singles but not much else. Reputation got my attention, but Lover is what made me a Swiftie. Folklore feels so different but still so Taylor. My partner, who has stated many times they are tired of listen to nothing but Swift, heard me playing this album and asked me who is was because they were really enjoying it. Folklore is the Taylor Swift album for people who don't like Taylor Swift.
What I really love and think is the "cobblestones " metaphor: cardigan: High heels on cobblestones -> cobblestones are the relationship, high heels might break, she might break in this relationship, it's hard to walk, it's hard to work out but James is still the one to catch her when she falls (for him) etc betty: I was walking home on broken cobblestones -> right before Augustine pulls up, foreshadowing of the relationship, how it's gonna breK5
Been watching vids about Taylor and her music; believe me, this one is exceptional. Thank you for creating this. folklore is personally my best album. It has saved me from these depressingly dark times. Love the vid. 🖤
Okay I’m not done but I already LOVE this video essay! I love your Winx videos and I’m so excited you’re also covering one of my favorite singers in such detail, especially because the storytelling is what I love most.
i only listen to "i knew you were trouble" at parties and i dont know shit about taylor but i love your storytelling and essays so thanks for telling me about her work!
I've heard some of her recent music because my mom likes her music. ( I hadn't heard anything since our song'). I'm willing to give her folklore album a try to see how her music has changed. Taylor Swift deserves praise as a dedicated artist. I'm always up for new music.
I just wanna say I'm glad you mentioned the lyric videos because I also geeked out over them. Especially TLGAD, once I realized the footage was *actually* taken from Holiday House I just- 🤯
i sacrificed my data so i could listen to this on my walk. that's how good this video is. you voiced a lot of my feelings regarding this album and added to them. great work
exile was so personal to me. I first heard it not too long after I finally left my ex, who abused me for over 3 years. one of the problems we always had was that I was constantly never heard. when talking about how I felt or our relationship, it was always cut short or manipulated into me feeling like a bad person. whenever I cried it was manipulation, whenever I told him problems I had with him it was me being over dramatic, etc. and once I eventually stopped bringing shit up, that was a problem too. so when I heard taylors part in exile, I was like "holy shit that's me". I gave so many signs, I left, he never heard me out. this was a time I didn't really listen to taylor, so exile was amongst like 3 songs from folklore I knew, but when I finally heard the rest of the album, my tears ricochet and mad woman also were very personal. but exile still captures exactly how I felt in my relationship, even if the song implies taylor didn't actually outwardly speak on her issues. sorry for the ramble I just really love this album and it's very close to my heart
this is honestly the best analysis of folklore i've ever seen, like I don't know how but you've managed to make me understand it so much better and deeply than any other video I've watched. i can see now how all of the songs aren't just about a distant story taylor's talking about, but something I can see in myself and other people in my life and the melancholy that these feelings evoke... thank you for an amazing video, you've dedicated so much to it and we appreciate it x
this is such a thoughtful video, i really enjoyed your take and analysis of such a beautiful album, can we expect an evermore analysis as well? :0 for me, i particularly resonate with mirrorball because for me, as an artist, the part of me that i put out there, reflective, bright, talented is tired. like its accurare but it doesnt give the full picture because i feel as if people are only there for that sparkly side.
How did I only now find your channel? Solid writing, flawless narration, flowing visuals and seamless editing. Really enjoyed this dive into a masterful songwriter. Taylor has said often that she is well aware, it's all about the words. You obviously know that, too. New sub. Well done. 👍👍
I love this album more than any I have ever heard! And up until "folklore", I didn't even think I liked Taylor Swift. Then I found out she's a genius!! Favorite ever!!
ok, I absolutely adore this video essay so far, but I think my absolute favorite thing is that you can tell approximately *when* in the pandemic you did the voiceovers and such. it's such a small thing, but I liked hearing you talk about the vaccine as if it were this shiny, new thing and being able to say "oh, so that's about when this part was made." again, great job so far. I super love how in *theory* I've heard a good portion of this before, but the way you phrase it just makes it totally unique, in a way I don't think anyone's really said before. 💗💗
I think this is my favourite Taylor Swift video essay. I very much enjoyed your takes on all the tracks and how you perfectly managed to put everything into words. And damn, you made me so emotional with some of these explanations, almost as much as the album itself! We also have a very similar taste in Taylor songs, this is me trying and the lakes are also two of my absolute favourites! Aaaaand... hello, fellow Rep stan! Yes, Reputation is absolutely amazing and I love it! Would love more Taylor content in the future!
Not sure why YT waited 3 weeks to show this to me, maybe they thought I wouldn’t still be interested in another video essay/reaction to folklore a year and a half later 🤷♀️ as a writer (poems/aspiring songwriter) I am very much intrigued in lyrical analysis such as this. Especially, to this album. I’m just at the 13:38 mark and wanted to comment before the first song started. Looking forward to this!
This is one of the best video essays I've seen on youtube. You did just a great job putting this all together and oh your song name puns every few minutes? absolute gold!
This video essay is really enjoyable to listen to and the sound of the piano for each song is making one feel the emotion and pain involved with it. Thank you so much.
Fearless is her best album until I heard Speak Now and then she topped with RED. RED is her best song for a long time until Folklore & Evermore released.
Folklore for me is an album that describes betrayal and sadness it describes real problems that felling of felling less .a felling of knowing you should be better but you don’t know how that felling of why you are whit me if I’m not perfect?
Okay first of all, I'm so glad I found this video in my suggestions! I love your narration. I'm still on TLGAD part of the video but couldn't stop myself from commenting that earlier I too thought it was Rebakah's husband being referred to as new money, and I was confused with the contradiction since he's also supposed to be from an oil money wealthy dynasty. But then a friend pointed out that the one with new money in the lyric "there's only too far new money goes" is actually Rebakah
Omg! My tears ricochet and bly manor reference instantly clicked in my brain when you mentioned this. My fav show and my fav song 💙 This makes so much sense. Thank You
I never knew I need a two hour video about folklore. Thank you so freaking much. Also, I hope you get to discuss her other albums like evermore and Speak Now.
Allowing oneself to become vulnerable to another person's will is both a comforting and terrifying experience that one could have in life...and that would be why we as human beings avoid, even refuse, to reach that level of existing with a significant other, whether it would a physical, socio-emotional, spiritual, sexual, or intellectual phase. I believe artists, such as Taylor Swift, are aware of this degree. 🧡As social creatures, we are constantly and consistently guarded and making adjustments for the purpose of survival.
Watching this on my birthday because I deserve to have probably my fave creator on the platform talk about my fave album and artist because yes that’s happening
i used to not even be able to listen to mirrorball because something about the production of the studio version doesn't work for me, even though the lyrics were always gorgeous, but the long pond version of it completely changed the song for me! the honesty of the guitars and the clarity of taylor's vocals? woof. i have yet to not tear up at how she sings "i've never been a natural; all i do is try, try, try." similarly, august was a like until i heard lpss, which turned it into a love for me. so grateful we got that live version of the album (and trying not to cry about evermore not getting the same treatment lolll) also, on the note of august: so interesting to me that you characterize it as an angry song! i've always heard it as wistful and resigned, more like the 1 in tone than illicit affairs. it sounds like augustine is speaking from well in the future after that summer has passed, so the hurt isn't as potent, but the indelible collage of summer memories linger. (the fact that my partner's name is august may very well also have something to do with this)
I love this video, and tend to come back to it from time to time, the writing is so good! I’d appreciate a review like this for all of Taylor’s albums being able to go into such depth!
Finally As always amazing video essay I love your videos and by the way I finished your book like before 2022 I rated it A I actually read lots and lots of books Every year I make sure to read 100 books Your book was a masterpiece For your first book That was mindblowing And I can’t wait for other books

I fucking love the harmonica in betty because it just captures that essence of dumbass teenage boy no thoughts head empty vibe.
help 😭😭
PLSSS that’s exactly what my head sounds like
I felt that it was ~bob Dylan vibes~
never thought about it that way
I’m going to have to fight back laughter when I hear it now 😂
This was so much fun. Surprised, though, that you didn't connect "roaring twenties" with that decade of her life between her teens and turning 30 when she truly roared as a performer.

'So much for summer love'
this is exactly how i feel when i listen to betty especially after understanding the whole love triangle thing
Yes someone understands it . I've been trying to get anyone and everyone to listen to me about this teenage drama lol
Epiphany is a piece of art by a songwriting genius operating at the peak of her power. It’s painfully stark in its raw beauty. Not an easy song to listen to but one that deserves to be listened to and be more appreciated than it is.
Betty 02:45 She said "James get in"
August 02:45 I said "Get in the car"
I just think you'd enjoy this piece of information.

"If you want Everlore you gotta Folkmore" should be on a shirt.
My Tears Ricochet was a perfect description of the feeling I felt when just recently someone I trusted so much ended up being my "murderer" and through all my stages of grief of seeing our relationship die. Reputation is a masterpiece and I’m so glad you agree with that
“Truly nothing is more frightening to stuffy rich people than a woman who dares to have a good time.”
FUCKING GOLD. 😂
She has her own Jet for christ sakes. Loosers is the right word.
Lorelai Gilmore
Are you going to do one for evermore ? I really enjoyed this !!

You must. You won't be disappointed . Just don't hop in expecting an upbeat sound
I totally think My tears ricochet is a song about her catalogue. It makes total sense.
Folklore is perfectly crafted. It clearly defines the year 2020.
I just wanna say I'm glad you mentioned the lyric videos because I also geeked out over them. Especially TLGAD, once I realized the footage was *actually* taken from Holiday House I just- 🤯

you just gotta start a podcast analysing Taylor Swift songs. I mean I could have listened to you for two more hours
I just love Taylor and I feel blessed to live in a world where she exists. She will be an icon someday. ❤️
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG, LET'S GOOOO!!!!!!

Omg, the Folklore video is finally out!
My ex introduced me to Taylor and folklore perfectly captures the emotions I feel when trying to listen to folklore now. If that makes sense
Fearless is her best album until I heard Speak Now and then she topped with RED.
RED is her best song for a long time until Folklore & Evermore released.
Speak Now is probably still my fav.
Folklore, Red & Evermore are all joint 2nd for me haha
I just want you to know that I am watching/listening to this while I'm doing chores at 3AM here in the Philippines. I love this!
This is 2 hours and 16 minutes long and I'll happily listen to every bit❤
Invisible string is a great song and I love it. It's so nice. But Lakes is superior.
Folklore for me is an album that describes betrayal and sadness it describes real problems that felling of felling less .a felling of knowing you should be better but you don’t know how that felling of why you are whit me if I’m not perfect?

This song absolutely deserved Album Of The Year. It's a stunning piece of art
GOD my soul NEEDED this video. It should have millions of views and personal thanks from Taylor herself.

Fact Taylor is a master singer songwriter!!!!!!!!and will always be proud of her!!!
This video is amazing, thank you for making it. Very nice analysis of the lyrics and the visuals and music choice was so relaxing.
I'll have to listen to this in parts because of my attention deficit and academics but I'm so excited! I hope you do evermore too, but if not, that's fine too ❤️
I really loved this essay, it was very informative and interesting. It just goes to show that even though I seem to disagree with the speaker's worldview, we can still be united by our love of Taylor Swift!😀
