@@flyingchicken33 Yeah it's hard to think the Leafs are getting past not only Tampa, but Boston, and Carolina. The Leafs are a good team though, could be wrong. I just don't see it happening. The Oilers probably have a better chance with the lack of competition in the West though, but Vegas and Colorado imo are the teams to beat. Winnipeg was also really good up until lately.

I'm a Leafs fan. I get the double call on this one.
They were going to let the interference go until McD blatantly slash AM's stick off his hands. They can't not call that one but then can't just call 1 penalty and not the other. It's fair for both sides.
The correct call would have been to just call AM. But then the Leafs would retaliate by targeting McD.
The problem with this is if refs didn't make a habit of letting shit go, they would actually be able to control the game. That interference by AM is like a penalty only 50% of the time. No one can predict what refs decide to do.

@@toke7342 As a Leafs fan I agree it is interference. The issue most people have is the refs didn't call it (no hand up) until they called Mcdavid. It's like they weren't going to call it but had to call Mcdavid so decided to call Matthews also. It happened at least a few times this game, going both ways.

Refs do this all the time so the game doesn't get out of hand with guys going after each other. I'm not a fan of either team btw

The league has done everything they can to eliminate fighting and retaliation (beyond what McDavid did)
And that right there is the problem. Not only has the NHLPA voted several times overwhelmingly to keep fighting in the game, but the current rules in place (instigator etc.) are the deterrent. So instead of being forthright (like when announcing new points of emphasis), the league decides to whisper in the ears of refs to make certain (and player specific) calls. If that wasn’t McDavid, Matthews wouldn’t have been in the box.

Guys also get suspended based on who the infraction is against too. Or if the person committing it is a bigger star.
NHLPA will likely always be pro fighting if it means retaining jobs for certain players in the league. Guys like Reaves are the last of a dying breed.
Also this penalty to me is pretty clear cut regardless. I have 0 issue with both guys going to the box. Matthews intentionally trips McDavid and McDavid shouldn't have swatted him.
If this was truly about McDavid being a star in this case then just Matthews gets penalized.

The only reason McDavid fell over Matthew’s was AM S leg position. AM was watching the play and puck and didn’t even see CM. I don’t think AM should have gotten the penalty but understand why the ref sent both.

@@olivercromwell524 so players can’t have a season where there a little off. He’s still on pace for the big 40 which is amazing and he’s missed basically a months worth of games. Mathews has put up more goals than Mcdavid almost every year. It’s clear Mathews is the better goal scorer it’s just that Mcdavid is having a career year and Mathews is having an off year. Kinda like how ovi never really put up more assists and points than Crosby but he would consistently put up more goals than Crosby with the exception of a couple seasons. Mcdavid is better but don’t discredit Mathews.

This has always and will always be interference. Reminds me of the Ference interference play on Halpern during the 2011 playoffs. Planting to guarantee contact with a player that isn't looking is dangerous and is easily avoidable.

Looking at the comments I guess people don't know what Interference is. *when a player uses his body (“pick” or “block”) to impede the progress of an opponent (non-puck carrier) with no effort to play the puck*. Mathews' action was penalty and so was McDavid retaliation. BUT if Refs wanted to call it, then call right away or just leave it. This kinda call happens here n there but in this game, refs were terrible.
