My Betta died almost immediately after she got Kanaplex. It was dosed correctly. I have had other bad experiences with this medication in the past. For the record, Betta had been slightly ill when I adopted her. I thought I could help, and I did. Clean water gave her a healthy, active life for six months, then she relapsed. I'm starting to think that the Betta industry is cruel to fish and the people who love them. My sympathy goes out to all of you for trying. It isn't your fault. Thank you for the information.

I don’t think this was in the video, but please set a revival tank as well! When the betta is taken out of the salty Epsom water, it should be put into a mixture of I think 3/4 aquarium water and 1/4 epsom salt water. This’ll help to not shock your fish from the sudden change.

Yes, this is actually a very important step as to not add more stress to your fish which would impair any potential healing/recovery.

Going to be doing the treatment with meds and water changes. Hopefully my boy pulls through. I don't believe it's water quality issues because his water hit all the right boxes (he's in a planted 10 gallon tank with shrimpies). He did have a bacterial fin infection on both fins which molded. I treated those accordingly which he is still recovering from. However he has begun to swell. Not fully pineconing yet. Buy I'm going to try and save him. Thank you for this video. I will update
Edit 1. So the next day (February 5th) he's beginning to pinecone. I am able to dose the second half of meds tomorrow night (I'm using api general cure). As I type this he's in an epsom salt bath. He still has a wonderful appetite (ate 3 pellets today!). He will swim up to the surface to eat. But he sits on the bottom of the tank not moving for the most part. Not even greeting me. So I can definitely tell he's not feeling good (understandably). I'll update tomorrow.
Edit 2: february 6th, this morning he was doing good! He ate one pellet. This evening however, he's getting progressively worse. I don't think there's anything that can be done. I haven't dosed the second dose of meds yet, but I don't think it will make a difference. He's obviously very very uncomfortable. He's super duper bloated, breathing fast and laying in one spot all day in the tank. I think tonight I will need to euthanize. The longer he's alive the longer I'm contributing to his suffering. I will euthanize tonight. I will update again later.
Final edit. Chili pepper has passed away tonight. He was such a sweet boy with lots of personality. I loved him more than words could describe. Swim in peace beautiful boy ❤️

Sometimes a fungus can grow on natural plants. I think dropsy caused by fungus is not mentioned as much as it should. Perhaps the next time a bacterial treatment by itself doesn't work, I would try an antifungal.

I have to say like many here, "THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!" My betta Blue Bell who is an opaque with blue spots had dropsy and was literally on the verge of dying, I had even contemplated euthanizing her because she had stopped eating and actually hadn't eaten in 4 days, had pine coning and would just hide in a corner floating vertically, not moving much at all when I found your video. I knew she was suffering but I just couldn't put her to sleep. Along with the symptoms above she also had internal hemorrhaging that was pooling at the bottom of her belly that I could clearly see. By now I had done some researching and found that Epsom salt baths and Kanaplex could possibly help and was using both based on the information that I had found and going by the instructions on the Kanaplex bottle which was not helping much at all. It basically stated not to use more than three doses max of 1 measure every 48 hours. When I finally found your video I did exactly what you said, change water every day and doused the Kanaplex directly on her instead of just in the water and prepared to do this for 11 days. After the first 2 days I began to see an improvement of her moving more, but the next day she went back to literally the same state as before. After a few days of this, I decided to douse her twice a day, once in the morning and once at night along with changing the water everyday and the Epsom salt bath and gradually she began to improve. I had to use more Kanaplex in hopes that it wasn't too much because she was basically suffering and dying and I wanted to try everything I could. After about another 3 days of this method she finally started back eating and swimming more and after about the 9th day she was a brand new fish! That was about 2 weeks ago and now she's perfectly fine...no pine coning, no more hemorraging, swimming around normally and her she's a gorgeous silver blue color happy Betta! Her color has improved tremendously as well. Not sure if anyone else has had this type of result afterward but her color is more beautiful than it was before she contracted dropsy. She's good now! Thank you so much for the step by step instructions, I would have never thought to put the medication directly on her or thought to use it twice a day if I had not found your video. You saved my Blue Bell and for that I am forever grateful!

Thank you for teaching me about dropsy. I lost my Sweet Blue this morning. Your video makes my heart prepares for the worst situation possible. My betta suddenly fall sick on Friday so I moved him to another smaller tank. Change water n also help him to swim easier, less energy to reach to surface. I thought he got bladder problem so I try to fast him.. Then yesterday night (Saturday) he got worse, his shape like you said, pineconing. I knew it was too late as things progress very fast and there's nothing I can do more. I got Blue from local petstore for like RM 2, he was suffering from small cup and tail problem. It was short journey for us but I take comfort in what you said, don't blame ourselves. I cried a lot when Blue pass away this morning since I like him a lot. But I know he was really happy since I got him, from cup to bigger tank, he was the sweetest little friend that always came out when I called him. Swim in peace Blue 💙😭💙

Thank you for this! I was unsure how to treat with epsom salt + kanaplex but I now know only do 15 min bath with the epsom salt. I hope I can save my betta baby, I’ve only had him for 1.5 years and am not ready to lose him so soon. I am praying it is not too late, dropsy is so scary :(
EDIT: June 2023, he was able to recover after a week with the daily salt baths + kanaplex treatment but 6 months down the road he developed dropsy a 2nd time and I repeated the treatment. Sadly, he didn’t make it. With dropsy, every time it develops, the fish is less likely to survive and I knew he was prone to it since the first incident. Sorry I didn’t reply sooner I never saw notifications 😭 I appreciate everyone’s concern

Been using this method to help treat my sons betta for dropsy. 9 days in and swelling has significantly reduced, pinecone scales have diminished significantly and he's become more mobile and has regained an appetite. I dont want to speak to soon but this method has shown effective. Just hoping we caught it soon enough to cure it completely. We found that it was most likely due to a type of plant we had in the tank so we have since removed the plant and cleaned the tank thoroughly. This is the third betta that's been in my household the last 20 years and I've never had to treat dropsy before. Wonderful information for first time keepers as well as those inexperienced with dropsy. My son and I thank you. Our fish "prototype" (yes that's his name) probably thanks you too. 😀

hi, I have been following your advice for a couple days now. everything is going well. however, I went out of town for a day and so it messed up the routine of treatment every 24 hours. I am really hoping this isn't a huge problem. he was doing really really well from treatment, but is back to being pale and has fin clamp. he originally got dropsy due to overfeeding and was in a dirty tank as a school class pet. I brought him home (im the assistant teacher). he is eating, and I think he pooped the other day as I was moving him to the epsomsalt bath (there was brown liquid in the net when I moved him). please let me know what you think.

I've been following your method with Erythromycin because I wasn't able to find Kanaplex locally and my betta seems to be doing better. The package instructions say to do a 25 percent water change every 48 hours (two changes total per treatment). What about when the treatment is over? Should I perform a larger water change to get rid of the meds? I didn't have a hospital tank and she's the only inhabitant so I treated her in her main tank. I have a sponge filter. Should replace it? My tank was already cycled. Thanks in advance for your advice.

@@kingdomstorm4205 Hi Kingdom and thanks for the request 😊.
Fishy is doing great, swimming straight resting sideways.
      What I've done .........
Holly House pet hospital removed 20ml of air with a syringe after a scan, they are amazing.
After one month he could still dive for food but was resting sideways at the top with mouth and gills below the water as his spine now bends from I believe spondylitis.
Time for a special tank refit ❤
I bought 6 Clasic Aqua Lumo silicon decorations and supported them half way under the water level of 8 inches, around 40ltr in Fishys tank and carefully put him into the units which he learned fast and would zoom into them to rest from below, Fishys instinct is quite clever.
This is all now reversed as his equilibrium has now chosen the bottom of the tank and he can swim upwards, this is fascinating ❤
Fishy has a bubbler, Elite stingray 15 filter, Tap safe, Bacteria, heater, and other fish on a dvd TV to entertain him plus a 4 watt soft blue light bulb next to his rest area shoreside turned to the lowest setting at night, please don't tell my psychiatrist 😉 😆
I change 25% water and chemicals every 7 to 10 days.
The filter has carbons and sponges so during 25% water change I wash the sponges in drained fish water and change the carbons once a fortnight, I add filter boost pure balls every change.
Fish eats flakes twice daily and the inner of a steamed garden pea every three days which seems to help his pooing.
I don't use salts and do use a thermometer for my goldfish water temperature.
I use none powder surgical gloves during maintaining the tank and dabbed a little king British methylene blue on a slight bloody graise he acquired swimming against something in the tank so now I have strategically placed sponge to limit that happening again and the blue worked perfectly, I only dabbed the blue on the wound!!!.
Sorry for the epic but I hope it's interesting and helpful.
      Every day is a bonus.
Have a nice Christmas and new year .

She's in a single planted 10 gallon tank with a snail that was their previously. And all my parameters are as good as it was pervious. I've been dosing API general and aquarium salt. I don't think she'll get better since she can hardly swim to get food now.

Please help!! I’m currently trying to treat my sweet betta with pineconing. It all happened super suddenly so I’m doing my best. So far, I did 4 water changes over 4 days, once daily, and about 50% each time. I’ve also done 4 salt baths, and yesterday I dosed the first dose of KanaPlex to his tank. I have a question, I shouldn’t continue the large water changes while doing the KanaPlex, right? Since that’ll reduce the concentration of the meds? I thought I should either do a small, around 25%, water change around an hour before dosing OR don’t do any water changes until end of treatment?

so I change the water when the fish is having the salt bath. usually 30-50% change. and then once he is back in the tank, I sprinkle the e.m. erythromycin on him. keep the filter on very low. within the 24 hours the medicine should be absorbed and you're able to do the water change again. follow this guys routine exactly

Hi, I need help, I don't know what to do with my betta fish anymore. I have already tried several dropsy treatments and am now trying the one you propose. I am on the eighth day of treatment and although, according to me, I have seen a slight decrease in the size of the inflammation, these last 3 days Puchito no longer wants to swim. He passes it to the bottom of the tank and doesn't even go up for the food, he waits for the pellets to soak and fall to where he is. I've checked the ammonia levels and the pH, and both seem fine. He has been sick with dropsy for about 3 months and continues to fight, only when he was at his worst stage in which he couldn't even swim he seemed to have more life than now that he is better and he spends it at the bottom of the tank and just swimming stuck to the ground . I have noticed that his tail is a bit rotten (which seems strange to me because I am also treating him with Kanaplex, which also helps with this disease), however, on previous occasions he has already suffered from this and had never stopped swimming, so I do not think it is because that. Sorry that my English is not very good, I had to rely on the translator. Greetings from Mexico.

Hello, my betta fish is very sick with very progressed forms of the symptoms shown in your betta fish in this video. Unfortunately the KanaPlex just arrived today after needing it like a week ago. Unfortunately where I live fish antibiotics are impossible to find in store and have to be ordered. I gave him his first dose just now. Question for you, do you continue giving him the Epsom salt baths during the KanaPlex treatments? If so, how often do you do them and how long do you do the bath for? I have a detailed reddit post describing what I have been doing for treatment if you are willing to take a look, it has pictures, dates, and tons of background info on tank parameters and feeding.

  • @sandyn8280
    @sandyn8280 2 года назад +2

It’s been almost 1 week since I noticed pineconing with my betta and I started kanaplex last Saturday.
I’ve been doing 90% daily water changes because I read somewhere else that this was recommended. Do you advise against such a large daily water change? Should I do maybe only about 10-15% daily water change instead? He is in a uncycled, 5 gallon quarantine tank.
I add epsom salt directly to the tank and dose kanaplex daily. Should I lower dosage and dose every 48 hrs instead or continue to do it daily? I heard some people had success with dosing every day, but on the package instructions it says to dose every 48 hrs.
My bettas pineconing looks like it’s getting worse, compared to a few days ago. His pineconing is now very noticeable when I look at him from the side. Before, I could only see the pineconing well when looking at him from the top. Is this concerning and do you think he will still have a chance to recover?
Thank you and bless you 🙏🏼

    • @EverydayAquatics
      @EverydayAquatics  2 года назад +4

It's good to change 70% or above if it's in an uncycled tank, clean water is important for it to recover.
It's better to go with the instruction because they are the ones who made the product.
Does it still active and eating well? From my experience, if betta refuses to eat, it's pretty much difficult to recover.
