Edit clarification about the side quests. I am not saying they are witcher level. BUT some have some cool things going on and for a JRPG didn't bother me

To me, it seems like it's like Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring if we didn't know exactly if or when the Two Towers and Return of the King were coming. We know the Tolkien original story, we love the original story, but how weak would it have been if he'd completely dropped the ball on the next two entries or they didn't even ever arrive at all?

Yeah, me too. It’s at the point now where I’d rather ask some random, piss stained, geriatric over watching an IGN review and if there’s no ACG review, it can make a real difference as to whether I throw down for a shiny new game.
Oh my god, I'm so happy someone else mentioned the lack of a jump button. I knew there would be flying enemies and that this would be an issue. A game this open without a jump button makes it feel more on rails than it should as well.
There is a lot of flying enemies in crisis core too. I didnt complained. I think I will like the game so Im gonna buy it
If you played the demo. you can attack flying enemies because the character automatically jumps. you cant only hit those outside the map enemies
It isnt a problem.
The only problem I could even imagine is if they don’t flinch when hit which is what it seemed was happening in this video. Even still a quick spell probably takes care of that issue.
It doesn't seem like a problem, just switch to Barret or use magic if you can't hit them with melee.

I think it'd be useful for some characters, Like Tifa to be able to jump and if appropriate jump off the environment to chase down enemies they miss with the initial jump. i got the impression from the demo they were going for a greater sense of immersion so I wasn't disappointed that I couldn't adequately attack flying enemies as Cloud. As long as the game design is varied enough to creatively entice varied and dynamic gameplay it could work going forward really well. They've never done this before so letting user response adjust gameplay, even with potential retro-active updates could work extremely well.
But you could attack enemies in the air if if the enemy was low enough.
If they allowed you to jump you would have quickly noticed how much of a hallway of game it was... I felt cheated a couple of times by invisible walls, ladders being blocked by a single unyielding crate and areas protected by the all mighty 2 foot railing of DOOM!
so yeah, let's face the fact that FF7 was never meant to be an open world adventure. At most you could squeeze some QTEs for the more outrageous feats of athleticism

I remember playing this game on board the USS O'Brien DD-975 while I was stationed in Japan back in 1998. It got me through some long underways at sea. I can't wait to relive that feeling or try to relive it. Thanks for the video review. Now I gotta wait for it to come out, or just go ahead and pre-order so I can get a 48 hour early access. I just got it last week I'm getting used to combat it's different
I rarely pre order games, but I did pre order this one. I played the demo and really enjoyed it, so I should enjoy this game. I never played the original, as it came out during a time where I just couldn't devote any time to big games, so I never started them. This will be a fresh experience for me, so I see that as a good thing.

To be perfectly honest it looks like a PS3 game at times. This review really just ignored a lot of the major issues with this game as a product imo.
Blake Walden some textures aren’t great but all games have issues. As a whole this game is amazing

37 hours for a moderately quick playthrough sounds like a damn good deal. Helluva lot better than the piss poor 4 hours RE3 puts you through.

Honest review! I like that you addressed the idea that this is the beginning of a game and that waiting could make sense to those of us. I at least would like them to announce how many games there are and the release period.

I agree Dmc5 looks amazing to this day. Although the Decima engine is probably one of the best.

The Decima Engine does everything right, from textures to character models to fluid motions...but that RE Engine is either on the same level or above the Decima Engine.

Flying enemies are specifically built to be approached differently. The entire meta of the game is learning to take one of the hundreds of options and use it for the appropriate application. Flying enemies are just magic targets, if you use the right magic most flying types immediately take tons of damage, fall to the ground, and are pretty easily killable in a single combo once down. Pretty sure it even tells you that outright in yellow text when you assess almost any flying enemy.

To those who complain about the FF7 Remake being split into multiple releases, this is a quality-over-quantity decision that has ELEVATED the FF franchise. Not to mention, this is an entirely NEW game!
Amazing gameplay, graphics, character models, music, and the list goes on. TRUE fans can easily put 40+ hours into this game while expecting the next chapter to carry the same (if not better) quality.
It’s 2020. Imagine retelling a story that spanned across 3 PS1 discs in 1997, but with the addition of voice acting, better graphics, and a new combat system. People’s expectations are unrealistic for a game that has DELIVERED on every front.
In the case of FF7 Remake, people’s “business model” complaints are robbing them of the experience they CLEARLY weren’t ready for in the first place. GET OVER YOURSELVES! 👍

Not a fan of episodic games, especially if this is full priced AND all the other episodes are full priced too. Add to that the time frame and my uncertainty on how they can stretch a small portion of the game into a full 40 hour RPG.
It's a full length game. The original Midgar segment was 8-9 hours long and didnt actually go into the setting at all. This one is ~40 and actually goes into the setting in ways that were only mentioned in passing in the original. The fact that it's episodic is really a moot point, There was absolutely no way they were ever going to be able to do the whole game in this manner all at once. The original was literally 4-5x longer than anything else on the market in 1997, at around 50-60 hours.

Same I remember having 200+ hr game save files on 7-10. Getting ultimate weapons for my party, fighting omega/ultima weapon, maxing out stats. Doesn’t seem like i’ll have the freedom to do that here especially since this part ends before you even get access to the open world.
The game feels like a full game at around 30 to 40 hours and takes around 70 to 90 hours to 100% Most linear games sit within this length or even shorter.
They turned Midgar into a full game beautifully, imagine waiting for all the Marvel or LOR movies to come out before watching any, kinda the same thing here.
I feel that Square is cashing on the name and on the hype. I just finished DQ XI, which is completely packed with content and made with love, which I cannot see in this game.

FF7 Remake probably won't be as good as DQ11 or even as good as FF7 original, but this game will definitely have heart. That's the one thing no FF game doesn't have. 13 and 15 may be objectively poor games, but I cannot say that those games weren't lovingly crafted.

Comparing a lamborghini to a Fiat Punto. A Lamborghini is more likely to get leased than bought while a Fiat Punto is cheap enough to buy and you can drive with it how long you wish. FF7 remake has overly realistic graphics and character models combined with cinematic cutscenes it was a way bigger production than dq11. So, of course it isn't as packed with content as dq11.

Jonny Sad So that you don't jump outside of fights on objects you're not supposed to jump on. I guess this limitation was made on purpose to avoid following bugs and artificial shortcuts in the game.
theres alot to concern and change the way the game plays if you add jump. So the devs might have considered and discussed about the feature, but at the end decided not to. And that is why a lot of game don't have jump.
Basically. Probably style choice.

Yea same here, I worked so hard for knights of the round in the original and blew every battle up with it. This seems depressing if summons are only in certain battles.
I know we don't like it, but I think it's here to stay. It works for the gameplay.
You can summon more here than in FFXV.
Exactly what i said. One of the best things about FF7 was the summoning and they went and limited it just because everyone was looking forward to that.
I consider myself lucky that I even get summons this early into the game. We don’t get our first summoning Materia until Chocobo Farm in the original game.

Only Cloud Strife could get away with wearing a sleeveless poloneck.
All they had to do was stick to the original story but they didn't, not add new characters, totally avoid corney new age hip teenage speak and at least give the option for original combat but again.. should of kept everything the same just add those beautiful visuals and job done remade!! The game is rich enough to go tweaking it as much as they did
I'm currently at Level 37.. 25-30h in.. i love the game so far.. the combat in this game is by far the best jrpg combatsystem ever.. you got alot of diffrent materia to play around with and its alot of fun!

Whenever I replayed FF7 over the years I was always glad to get out of Midgar and get on with the real game.
So having them stretch out a 5 hour chunk into a 37 hour game........

Yeah like I said above, it means missing out on many iconic locations and scenes that we would want in a remake such as the ferris wheel ride with Tifa and Cloud or that Aeris scene or Zacks Hometown, the mansion you meet Vincent in ect ect
No matter the size of the game, it will still feel like somethings missing

@@PattyOflan88 Yeah, for me the wrost thing they can do is to turn FFVII into Devil May Cry and have the games be independent. There should be a way to carry over your chars and gear from one game to the next. They may give an option to start with a standard gear/level for people who only have one game, but for people who have the others there must be a way to carry over your chars.
I believe they will go with the tried and true leveling formula
Use your level to artificially raise opponent's Hp
They could also go with the Metroid formula and Dunno they all get mugged and hit on the head with a blunt object... So we start fresh and shake up the concussion the first game gave us anyway...
Progress will be difficult because if you are playong it like me you'll have a maxed out character and materia

You give thoughtful commentary without going so far out into left field that no one can understand what you're saying (well most of the time :). Two reviews in one video ,final fantasy and remake .
I don't think people were so worried about the length of the game as much as having their time filled by quality content. Many other reviewers have noted that the game clocked in at over 30 hours but at least half of that felt like filler and that the main story was clearly stretched out explicitly to make them game longer as opposed to the game's length being made to accommodate the story. The graphics sure are gorgeous and the combat looks fun, but too many people will be buying this because of nostalgia and fail to actually admit it has faults. I don't doubt it's a fun game but I wish people would stop heralding this is at the second coming of Jesus. Sure, its a massive re-imagining of the original and the developers deserve credit for the production value but how does the game rate in comparison to other present day titles?
If square had any stake in creativity and originality left, they would have made an entirely new FF. but Nostalgia sells, and this is their primary cash cow. They need to keep the lights on somehow. I haven't played the Resident evil remakes, but there are voices out their who have called it overrated. People just want their favorite thing to "win".

Damn one of the biggest surprises as a kid was stealing the High wind and learning that you can fly around the damn map. As well as run into weird looking worms that turn out to be badass world bosses.
Ya that was great and especially when Cid became Captain xD.
You could learn the worms attack, I think that it was called "Nova". It's been a long time.
We have no idea what the ending twist means because that is very very ambigious in its concept and narrative. so there is no reason to claim we do.
Well, some people would just jumped the gun and assumed everything like they know how the story unfolds.

IMHO I would honestly say play the original first. That is after all, the thing you've been hearing about so much. The remake is just so so so different.
Playing only the remake gets you a generic action game; you'll be aware of the areas and bosses and general plot sure, but with playing the original (remaster on PS4), you'll get an idea of the magic that makes people such fans of these games. There is an innocence, depth of meaning and substantive darkness to the original that I think is lost in the remake.

Great review Karak! Being someone who never played FF7 as a kid I never jumped on the hype train when remake got announced, I jumped in at FF10 actually, (I wanna say I was like 13, so the game had been out awhile, and the only FF7 I played was crisis core) from the get go I said If I bought this game it would be when the entire thing was released at once so I'll probably be 37 by the time that happens :P

My issue is not the size of Midgar but rather the iconic locations we miss out on, that moment with Cloud and a companion at the theme park, the mansion where you meet Vincent ect ect
Im actually more wary of this than excited, Id rather have Midgar smaller and have all the locations from the original game
Fun review. When you say you can't jump it reminds me of the jump attacks in Nier Automata. Maybe in the next chapter they'll address some issues.

Thanks for the honest review and addressing the liberties taken in the story. It's one of my main issue that will make me skip this one, but barely any reviewer makes mention of it.
Only other reviewer I've seen mention the story changes is JayRPG. He absolutely shitted on the game. Lol.
I'll wait until the entire thing goes on sale as FF 7 was never really high on my list of favorite FF games. Now if it was a FF6 remake instead, I would be all over it.

7 is the best to me but its cool to be different and say something other then the consensus #1. 6 is good but wasnt my cup of tea. 9 is very good but god that battle system is slow. Love them all but 7 and 10 are my top two personally with the best mix of world, gameplay, and story
7, 8 and 12 have always been my favorites. I'm torn realizing that I will be in my mid 40s by the time the final game comes out.
I think you gonna change you FF7 opinion with this Remake. Special in terms of characters.

@David Holesch Agree. I saw his review of Monster Hunter World and his gameplays was horrid. Seriously, this guy was using the shotgun type of ammo from long range doing 1s and 2s per pellet (when they hit for like 30 each when used properly). I like his reviews for the funny commentary and for different opinions.

Yes! Pretty much the same system, only with some bosses after certain "conditions" are met or the gauge will appear if you take a real beating then the summon meter will start to charge up

I don't know why I'm looking up reviews at this point. I'd preordered the game, am now playing it and loving it. I do feel like there's some padding in there but after the disappointing FF15 this is what I needed to get back into FF
My uncle had FFXV on Xbox and I was game sharing with him I was like 60 hours in before we stopped game sharing
It took a long while but I bought it for myself on ps4 for like 20 dollars on a big sale and reached I think like 20 hours of gameplay but then stopped and now go back on and off every like two weeks for like 30 minute to 1 hour sessions
Anyway I bought ff7 original on sale and now the remake is on sale for 40 bucks.. Should I buy the remake for 40 bucks or do you think they'll be a bigger sale later? Should I beat the original first...? I already have an idea on the originals story/plot through watching the TFS parody and a bit of wiki reading?
I only ask cuz you know ps5 is coming I have to pre order my Madden 2k as my yearly buys and ps plus while also getting the ps5 so cash is a bit tight and I wanted to make sure this 40 dollar sale buy was a good move
Yeah, I expected the game to be in the 30-35 hour mark. A little disappointed, but it is only the first “part” so. Looking forward to the weekend.
That's a normal length for an FF game.
@bombflo1FF7-10 are 30-40, and a considerable amount of that are random battle transitions. FF12 and 13 were a bit longer. 15 is shorter, as are most of the sprite based games.
I live in Australia and got the game last week, I'm 35 hours in and at Chapter 13 (of 18 apparently).

This _is_ a full game. What you're actually saying is "wait until this game's sequels are released." Which, let's be honest, is not a very good argument. I mean, can you imagine someone making that argument for the Lords of the Rings/Harry Potter/Marvel/etc movies while they were still being churned out? How about the new iteration of God of War? 'Cuz that game _is_ going to get sequels, and you know it. Do you think people shouldn't buy/play that game just because it's going to get sequels or because the full story hasn't been released yet?

That was like telling someone who eats cake every day to not eat cake and to wait a year for more. I think they r milkin us right now, then teyll give us what we want.
They're definitely not milking us. If they had released this in a manner similar to Telltale Games, maybe they would've been. But though FF7:R has some gripes, Square really didn't spare any expenses on this game. It's a complete, fully contained game all on its own. The next game is going to be a full on sequel to this first game, no different from how Red Dead Redemption 2 was a sequel of the original Red Dead Redemption... So unless you're going to argue that all games that get sequels -- and, by extension, all franchises, like God of War, Dark Souls, etc -- are just about milking us, then you can drop that argument entirely.

I'm almost done with XV now. Minus the story, it's definitely a top 5 Final fantasy game 💯 you won't be disappointed.
