- China's Tian Tao shocked the weightlifting world at the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships when he returned to competition in the 89kg Olympic category, competing against his teammate Li Dayin. Tian built up to a world record at 222kg, 1kg above Karlos Nasar's world record.

The 89kg category is filling up so quickly with superstar athletes its actually insane
Obviously because its olympic category now, and at previous cycle it wasn't
I mean basically the whole 81 and some of the 96 those athletes are ready and mature .
Because the IOC fucked up the 81-96 weight classes
I’m new to the sport, been training for less than a year with a 310 total. Excited to compete with these guys in the near future.
@Ethan Schmitt good , well for sure, not with this the time you are ready they been retire not saying that on a bad way sir ,, it takes like a decade to be ready to compite at that level.
Amazing lift. His snatch will be fine and I am sure he will manage at least 175kg again in the future, perhaps getting back towards a 180. But the magic happens in the C&J, so lets see how much he can push it
Bro 😭😭i literally love tian tao, looks so friendly, i wish him all the success at París 2024, he deserve its
The Heart Attack strikes again!
“This man’s career is not over” Well said!
Not shocked this happened nor the 180 snatch. It’s Li Dayin’s C&J going up so much that is blowing my mind.
Most beatiful clean in the sport🙇🏻
Now about that jerk...
not a fan of Tian Tao's double dip jerk
Please upload li dayin's 216kg clean and jerk, in my opinion it's even more impressive than his snatch wr, since it's a 10kg pr.
First lift had a double dip for sure.. Stream didnt really show it, but so obvious in this video. Still a sick 222kg lift in his 3rd attempt though, in which he went straight for it.
To be honest I would like to see it allowed. It is a fun technique to do and watch and allows (quotation needed) for more weight lifted. Remember when body contact was not allowed? And while we're at it, let's get rid of the press out rule. I think it's well understood knowledge it does not give any benefit to purposefully press out instead of locking out.
Double dip is a stupid and arbitrary rule like the pressout to begin with.
the first attempt was most obvious but tbh all 3 had double dip. TT is famous for it. i dont think it matters much in terms of results, as he barely did it in the 3rd attempt but lifted a world record.
What is a double dip?
@@Francesco_Di_Pereira after he stands up from the clean. He dips once to drive up and jerk it but doesn't. Then dip drives a second time and did the jerk.
The competition in China is rough... A lot of great athletes but only a few can be selected to go to the Olympics.
Yes he is great. But how the hell no one is talking about Li Dayin!
I'm asking the same question.... I think it's because he is more fun to watch (Dayin 'never' misses). Ps: I like Tian more than Dayin. :D hahaha
Dayin would have won the 96kg Gold too with his 89kg total. That’s simply crazy
@@thelastlegbender7903 winning a gold in 96s would be easier actually since most of the great athletes moved to the olympic categories.
who would talk about an _obvious_ cheater... dude's looking like a high class classic physique bodybuilder while training like a weightlifter and claims natty status, go figure
@@GilGiovani but that is exactly why team China should pick Li, he comes from a lighter category so he has room to get more strength, and he is more reliable. With Tian Tao you never know what to expect, he is super strong but he can easily bomb out.
Does this not constitute as a double hitch for the first 210 kg lift? i thought he did it for the second one too, but it was less obvious. I know hes been marked no lift before for this reason. I dont know much about weightlifitng so forgive me if im very wrong.
He's never been given a red light before for this reason if I remember it correctly
@@ws2013 he has. It was never a no lift tho
the rules are murky on it, however he surely is the most obvious "abuser" of this technique
When I noticed the double dip I watched the bar and it doesn't seem to oscillate much if at all so I think that is maybe why the 3 whites?
@‘OP no you’re absolutely right. granted I’m just a guy on the internet and was not seated where the judges are - but from this angle he put whip on each lift, even very subtly on the last one. unless this changed in recent years, that’s an invalid technique and should get a red by a judge that sees it being used.
Why don't the Refs call the double dip on the jerk. Come on now
God, he's got the best looking clean ever
I would give Artyem Antropov a look. Man is a clean tekkers.
Karlos NASAR will surpass that very soon
Magic! Wish my dad were still alive so we could share the OMG moment!
Feel sorry about that. Yet you will share more impressive OMG moments with your children🥺. Best wishes.
@@howtouploadvideos2512 thanks. My dad lifted. He gave me weightlifting and fitness like so many of our fathers gave to us. Just like you said I share this with my children. Healthy mind. Healthy body. Healthy family 🙏
First two should have been no lifts. Clear double dips in the jerk. Even if its small it still helps a lot in terms of whip.
Is the jerk legal? I saw another video of this and the commentator mentioned it appeared the jerk isn't legal due to intentional dipping, just before the jerk. Thoughts?
i think jerk typically involves back and forth and folks understand it
this is crazy. mad respect for such immense strength at 89KG
Why don't the Refs call the double dip on the jerk. Come on now
Fenomenal lift, what a comeback!
i loved how gigga chad tried to beat heart attack today with a 223 c&j
it really shows how TT is actually the true gigga chad!
Tian Tao clean is the easier in weightlifting world, even in his prime effort his clean is easy and in straigh form, it simple amazing
Watch the blue plate change slightly @ 2:19. I know the clip is being slowed down but what was the purpose of that edit? Trying to mask his second illegal double dip? This guy is extremely strong, talented and nice. But it seems like we are overlooking his form that actually breaks weightlifting rules. He didn't do it in his last attempt so I guess its just a bad habit?
This record is not going to last for very long believe you me!
You are probably right... I like Tien Tao's chances at breaking it himself 😉
OTOH, I don't think Karlos Nasar will be able to get back into world record shape in this quad, after _just_ having his Achilles tendon reattached 😞
And Nino Pizzolato has been too injured to compete at the last two major competitions, so it's tough to pick him to break it.
But Tien Tao for 223 (or more)? Yes, I think so. The only problem is that I don't think he'll get the chance to do it at the Olympics, because Li Dayin is still growing into the division, and will likely total 398-400 kg in this quad. I don't think China will risk selecting Tian Tao when Li Dayin is a significantly _safer_ bet to land a big total.
Tian Tao 🇨🇳💪💪💪
Why don't the Refs call the double dip on the jerk. Come on now
Refs and Jury are a joke.
IWF rules make weightlifting in the Olympics boring... Just think about having only Dayin OR Tao in the Olympics. It's a mistake. Both should be able to be there (along with Gigachad). Olympics should be a competition with all top level athletes in a 10-15ish rank, no matter how many come from the same country.
It's not IWF's rules, it's the IOC punishing them for refusing to make changes to corruption and doping in the sport. And the Olympics isn't just about the best in the world, it's about the spirit of international competition. Otherwise half the sports would just be a bunch of Chinese and American athletes and most of the world has no interest in that.
@@AfferbeckBeats Agreed, partially. About spirit of international competition we have the World Weightlifting Championships. Olympics it's not "altiusIsh fortiusIsh citiusIsh, maybe". The point I'm discussing is, imagine if the soccer world cup only accepts one county from each continent - e.g: Brazil, Germany, Japan, Australia and Egypt, would it be nice to watch? Now imagine for individual sports you as an athlete works hard, becomes one of the top in the world and not going to the Olympics.
I don't mind the IOC rule because it does make the games a lot more interesting for nations all around the globe in that they can root for their hometown athletes. What I don't like though is when some athlete who clearly born (or raised) and trained in USA or some other country with a lot of advantages goes to some nation without all those same advantages and takes a spot from that nation. I think to compete for a nation you have to have been a permanent resident for 4+ years.
Really underwhelming to watch an American or western European go an compete for some SEA or African nation that they clearly haven't spent much time in over some athlete who lived their whole life there and lost out to what is basically a sports mercenary.
Wait until Carlos Nasr comes up with a 225kg next. 😌
the slow-mo replays and continued commentary makes thes evids very pleasing to watch and thoroughly enjoy
Just frightening to watch...back breaking sport that can kill
That should be a no lift the bent is knees twice
His hair so bouncy. Team China in general actually.
Im honestly curious, is it legal to do a mini double dip like Tian does? Its most visible on the first attempt.
are those legal lifts
Yeah but now he has to dress up as a Janitor and pull some pranks in the gyms. 😂
What happened to Shi Zhiyong?
Him Vs Karlos at worlds please holy shit
Karlos cut his leg, a sink in a hotel fell on the back of his leg and he went for surgery. Not sure if he'll be back at top level throughout the next 6-12 months...
Steroyd men
alaways this double dip... that is not allowed?
These commentators like saying “ unbelievably easy” no it’s not! It is great technique. So great such that at maximal lift you cannot tell they are extremely close to their limits. If you lift substantial weights you would know that those cleans do not look as easy as you make them sound.
So double dipping is allowed now?
Are people just discovering Tian Tao for the first time or something? He's been doing it for ten years and never called for it.
@@AfferbeckBeats why not?
@@thorthewolf8801 most likely because I don't think it was written in the rule book in its recent issue. I could very well be wrong, but if it was then the judges would call it out.
SOO INSPIRING💯🏋THE BEST IS YET TO COME
So is it the current clean and jerk technique is different? I remembered when i was young, most people will jump to a lunge position and stand up, not a squat?
You been out of the loop for a few years in weightlifting. The split jerk is still highly used but the “squat jerk” as it’s called has been popularized across the last decade due to guys like Lu Xiaojun.
Why Tian Tao was not at the Olmpics? I thought that he won a major event before the Olympics. I believe the 2nd place lifter from that event won the last Olympic Gold in the absence of Tain Tao.
I love Tian Tao
Champion children of Chairman Mao are coming from all sides. Bravo! Thanks!
Some lifters really just look like they need to split vs power jerk. I trued transitioning to power jerk when I was competing and it was just so much more unstable. What do I know though. He was probably snatching my highest clean when he was 13🤪
Hes gotta add sink blocks to his program now.
Is he natty?🤣
3:00 zooom ?
Li Dayin is better
3:32 i can hear nasar crying after his Achilles surgery
Wow
This technique is something unacceptable to me .
first
How tf does he get away with double knee bend before the jerk?
great video again. you are gonna do a review of 89kg session, that's one of the most exciting sessions this year
Make a video on li dayin
is Shi Zhiyong not competing at this event?
I DOUBTED HIM AND I WAS WRONG
Give this man a fishing rod!!!
Li and Tian are such strong gangsters!! Damn
Inspiring af
tian tao wrote his name in history
Omg... that 222kg miss... his shoulders must be very flexible or its good night.
to be an olympic weightlifter you have to train to have flexible shoulders
There’s no hiding shoulder inflexibility in a power or squat jerk that’s for sure!!
VENI VIDI VICI (Tian Tao)
i would send li dayin.
Tian Thiccao!!!
Strongest fisher in da world. BIG respect.
Good.
👏👏📯
What's the name of the lift?
Clean and jerk. This is one of two lifts in the sport of weightlifting, the other being the snatch
Absolutely incredible
great
Not a world record in everyone's opinion. Zlatev did 225 at 82.5 a long time ago. No one could improve on that but officialdom wanted new WR's to publicie, so they altered the weight classes to make ostensible (but not totally legit) new WR's possible. Note I did not say the 222 isn't a huge achievement, but it will remain overshadowed by Zlatev's 225 and Vardanian's 224. There is no time warp available to go back and erase those lifts, too bad, huh? On percent the 222 has to improve to 243 kgs to slightly edge Zlatev. Officialdom and the idolizers of todays best lifters consider it poor form to bring any of these details up, but they will NOT be buried by attempting to paint them out of the picture, which is grossly unfair. Justice demands ongoing recognition of the greats of yesteryear---recognition which officialdom, commentators, and the fans of the current best are unwilling to allow.
These facts cannot be howled down.
Gross conjecture. The weight classes were restructured in ‘93 after the fall of the USSR and in ’98 to make way for women’s weightlifting in the Olympics. Drug testing is the elephant in the room; that’s everyone’s opinion.
Also use the Sinclair formula to compare across body weight. Zlatev’s 225 is the same as 233 @89. A chubbier Tian Tao did this weight in training.
“Justice demands ongoing recognition” anyone who watches this channel knows that’s like half its purpose. The guy commentating wrote a book compiling the 70 greatest of all time
@@bougieweightlifting OK I will join your bandwagon and paint people like Varbanov OUT of the picture since during these narrations the earlier lifters nearly never get any recognition. All lifters do more in training than in competition since attempts in training have no restriction on the number of attempts so it can be assumed Zlatev and Vardanian both exceeded their top competition lifts.
@@bougieweightlifting The drug testing really is the big difference between then and now. It does seem like nations are now getting back to being able to hit those same numbers without detection though so I suspect we will start to see some numbers of the all-time great Sinclair's fall.
Some though will be very hard like Naim's 500 and the 489's of the communist USSR era but the sport is getting closer.
@@charlessavoie2367 who in the world wants to paint our favorite 80s lifters out of the picture? Just trying to show that they weren’t an alien species. Also it’s Tian “Heart Attack” Tao. His best is 231 in competition.
@@NONO-hz4vo this.
How much did he snatch?
165
165
Around 1984, Viktor Solodov lifted 422.5 kg in the category up to 90 kg (190 + 233).
After this, current athletes are not very interesting to look at.
A lot easier to get away with using a lot of illigal "vitamines" in the 80's than now.
Three Chinese athletes will dominate the 89 kg. Europeans are out now
.
That was mega!
What about Li Dayin? He broke a WR too!
These guys are absolutely insane fest of STRENGTH 💪
TALK ABOUT "O.M.G"!!!
He clearly double dips before each jerk.
