  • China's Tian Tao shocked the weightlifting world at the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships when he returned to competition in the 89kg Olympic category, competing against his teammate Li Dayin. Tian built up to a world record at 222kg, 1kg above Karlos Nasar's world record.

      To be honest I would like to see it allowed. It is a fun technique to do and watch and allows (quotation needed) for more weight lifted. Remember when body contact was not allowed? And while we're at it, let's get rid of the press out rule. I think it's well understood knowledge it does not give any benefit to purposefully press out instead of locking out.

      OTOH, I don't think Karlos Nasar will be able to get back into world record shape in this quad, after _just_ having his Achilles tendon reattached 😞
      And Nino Pizzolato has been too injured to compete at the last two major competitions, so it's tough to pick him to break it.
      But Tien Tao for 223 (or more)? Yes, I think so. The only problem is that I don't think he'll get the chance to do it at the Olympics, because Li Dayin is still growing into the division, and will likely total 398-400 kg in this quad. I don't think China will risk selecting Tian Tao when Li Dayin is a significantly _safer_ bet to land a big total.

    IWF rules make weightlifting in the Olympics boring... Just think about having only Dayin OR Tao in the Olympics. It's a mistake. Both should be able to be there (along with Gigachad). Olympics should be a competition with all top level athletes in a 10-15ish rank, no matter how many come from the same country.

    • @AfferbeckBeats
      @AfferbeckBeats Год назад +7

      It's not IWF's rules, it's the IOC punishing them for refusing to make changes to corruption and doping in the sport. And the Olympics isn't just about the best in the world, it's about the spirit of international competition. Otherwise half the sports would just be a bunch of Chinese and American athletes and most of the world has no interest in that.

    • @GilGiovani
      @GilGiovani Год назад

      @@AfferbeckBeats Agreed, partially. About spirit of international competition we have the World Weightlifting Championships. Olympics it's not "altiusIsh fortiusIsh citiusIsh, maybe". The point I'm discussing is, imagine if the soccer world cup only accepts one county from each continent - e.g: Brazil, Germany, Japan, Australia and Egypt, would it be nice to watch? Now imagine for individual sports you as an athlete works hard, becomes one of the top in the world and not going to the Olympics.

    • @NONO-hz4vo
      @NONO-hz4vo Год назад +3

      I don't mind the IOC rule because it does make the games a lot more interesting for nations all around the globe in that they can root for their hometown athletes. What I don't like though is when some athlete who clearly born (or raised) and trained in USA or some other country with a lot of advantages goes to some nation without all those same advantages and takes a spot from that nation. I think to compete for a nation you have to have been a permanent resident for 4+ years.
      Really underwhelming to watch an American or western European go an compete for some SEA or African nation that they clearly haven't spent much time in over some athlete who lived their whole life there and lost out to what is basically a sports mercenary.

    Not a world record in everyone's opinion. Zlatev did 225 at 82.5 a long time ago. No one could improve on that but officialdom wanted new WR's to publicie, so they altered the weight classes to make ostensible (but not totally legit) new WR's possible. Note I did not say the 222 isn't a huge achievement, but it will remain overshadowed by Zlatev's 225 and Vardanian's 224. There is no time warp available to go back and erase those lifts, too bad, huh? On percent the 222 has to improve to 243 kgs to slightly edge Zlatev. Officialdom and the idolizers of todays best lifters consider it poor form to bring any of these details up, but they will NOT be buried by attempting to paint them out of the picture, which is grossly unfair. Justice demands ongoing recognition of the greats of yesteryear---recognition which officialdom, commentators, and the fans of the current best are unwilling to allow.

      Gross conjecture. The weight classes were restructured in ‘93 after the fall of the USSR and in ’98 to make way for women’s weightlifting in the Olympics. Drug testing is the elephant in the room; that’s everyone’s opinion.
      Also use the Sinclair formula to compare across body weight. Zlatev’s 225 is the same as 233 @89. A chubbier Tian Tao did this weight in training.
