Welcome back Aaron. Good video here. I grew up playing at tables where we all took turns doing different things like mapping, tracking initiative, tracking party treasure, etc. It definitely keeps the players more engaged and gives them responsibilities that keep them cohesive.
I was there. (I was usually the Mapper/Caller/Note Taker - partly because I usually had a back rank character.) I am sure different groups played differently, but we planned ahead, so we never ran out of torches or food or arrows or 10’ poles (or flunkies), and we never worried about where our gold was stored, so tracking those became a pointless exercise. But mapping (and creating interesting dungeon and wilderness layouts in our own worlds) was always an important part.
Having a foot in both camps you'd be well-placed to see some of the differences in the personalities of players of various versions of the game. Some of those player-based skills you mentioned are crucial. Not so much the Caller, Mapper, Chronicler and so on ... although really useful ... but the social skills the players need to exercise. Allow others their time to shine (don't make it all about you), help your fellow player who might struggle with numbers or words, assist the DM with cleaning up, give people a ride to the game ... that stuff! This is where a person can elevate the game. Taking those skills learnt elsewhere and focusing them on the session. You're an accountant? Then you handle the party finances. You're a developer, write a program that automates a grindy part of play others don't enjoy (looking at you encumbrance)! Good advice as always Aaron.
I will show up on time. I will call the day before if I can't make it. I will stay off my damn phone. I won't come if I'm sick. I will leave my dog, cat, or pet iguana at home. I accept that there may be references to race, sex, violence, suffering, and anachronistic ideas incongruent with modern thinking.
Look at this Gnome, he is like 12 what does he know about old school? LOL So happy to see Aaron making content again, now lets get him running and playing again
I’m sure there are varying experiences out there with them, but the ones I’ve seen are predominantly combat and story focused. Not much room for exploration and resource management outside of HP and spell slots/daily features.

So you all got pretty talented at all the different roles! That's awesome, man.

Welcome back, buddy! I need to frequent the discord more often, but now i can work and listen to the good stuff for now.
Good to see you, man!
Welcome back, solid info and advice. I think "modern" D&D could benifit from the old school roles mapper, caller, and such
I think so! Assuming they go back to the dungeon. :P
Sage as ever; welcome back
It’s great to see you, man! Thank you!

Someone taking the bite out of tracking encumbrance would almost be worth hiring to play with. Lol. Thanks for the kudos and the extra two cents! 😁

We should do a video together sometime, and I’ll definitely get you an invite to the streams. 😄

Good stuff...
Thanks man! Good to see you!
You're like a neo-grog. 😱😁
That's called the OSR. Old-School Renaissance.
Ehhh I’d say I’m an old school enthusiast ;)
May i sit at one of your games to see how it is ran
Sure! I don’t know that I’m much of an exemplar DM with 1E yet, but I’d be happy to let you sit in.
I was just hit with 3 adds in 8min of this video
What the heck RUclips
Fixed it! I forgot to turn off mid-rolls. RUclips is GREEDY!
I hope you saw the pbs article bashing OSR players.
I did! Some great videos on it by Tenkar and Grim Jim.
@@AaronthePedantic Watched them before this ha.
I WILL NOT AGE, I WILL NOT REENTER THE SCHOOL, I WILL NOT WATCH THE VIDEO BEFORE COMMENTING TO CONFORM TO YOUR SOCIETY!!!!
Hahaha classic Brad 🤣
Alrighty then!
This was a great video, very insightful. I had no idea how modern 5e games were played. No likey.

@@AaronthePedantic It was more the relationship aspect, sounds very high school.
