I don't like the inconsistent application of rules at DTRPG. I'm not going to remove my books though. I post to other marketplaces. I started my own site for people that requested different place to buy from. That's what I'm going to do and will continue.
How you've outlined it sounds like I wouldn't be happy with the results. I was aware that 'no half-elves' wasn't actually strictly what they meant. You could be labelled a 'half-elf' in the new world, but you'd have all the bonuses/penalties of an Elf...or Human if you chose. So, essentially 'half-elves' become reskinned elves or humans. That kinda does mean that 'half-elf' as it existed with it's own mechanistic impacts, are no longer available. If DriveThru were a bricks-n-mortar bookstore (remember those?), I think they'd be far less likely to take some customers opinion on whether a work is 'offensive', they would make their own minds up and they'd barely ever get a person actually walking up to the counter and saying, "Hey, this is offensive, please don't sell it," - because, you know it would require leaving the house. If they did then they'd be much more likely just to do it anyway, coz - dollars.
I like the new setup. Half-anythings taking their properties from one of their parents is how Basic/Experts did it for over 40 years. It wasn't a problem until they labeled half-races as racist, even though they have Dragonbourne and Tiefling classes. 😂😂
I'm glad someone likes the setup, because I'm not a huge fan. XD I'll figure it out, though. It took me about a year to get the last one the way I wanted it with lighting and everything.
@@AaronthePedantic by 2024 is my prediction. They want all things 5E in their D&D Beyond service. That means DMs Guild will be brought over into DDB exclusively. That also means that Roll20, Fantasy Grounds and Foundry will likewise lose licensing and all VTT assets will only be available on WOTC’s VTT. This is the back door way to implement OGL 1.1 and hyper monetize D&D. All 3PP PDFs “For 5E” will pay 20 - 30% portion over to WotC, not just DM Guild but all who upload content to DDB. This is why OneBookShelf and Roll20 shouldn’t be playing these political games with the OSR.
Half construction does not automatically mean "human" or "lesser". Your character could be 50% elf and 50% dwarf. Full, three-quarter, half, and quarter are just associative measurements. If D&D's senitivy department has issues with "slavery" and "half-races" then they also need to get started addressing ALL of the other sentive issues allowed in D&D games: alcohol use, addiction, assassination, blood, brothels, brutality, cannibalism, classism, corruption, crime, cruelty, curses, death, debauchery, decrepitude, demons and devils, disabilities, disease, disturbing content, drug dealers, drug use, emotional distress, erotica, execution, exploitation, famine, feudalism, forgery, gambling, genocide, graphic sex, graphic violence, gods, gore, hangings, heresy, horror, human sacrifice, human trafficking, imprisonment, injuries, injustice, insanity, insensitivity, maiming, magic, mental illness, mind alteration, monsters, murder, mutilation, mythology, nudity, oppression, pain, personality disorders, perversion, plague, poison, polytheism, possession, poverty, prejudice, profanity, prostitution, religious concepts, segregation, sex, sexual situations, sexuality, shape shifting, spells, stress, strong language, suffering, suicide, terrorism, theft, torture, tobacco use, trauma, undead, warfare, and weapon use.
@The Hellfire Club Yes agreed; a Fighter is starting to sound like a possible next issue for the sensitivity readers! As you can see from that long list, the question becomes how many sensitive issues do you remove before it becomes too many and you have an unplayable game. I'm sure devils and demons have feelings too and maybe we should try to be more understanding of their emotional rights before we run a sword through them... he he.
I think the way they're doing half-elves etc is good. I am annoyed that they chose to publicize it in the most inflammatory way. They keep on making these unforced errors so it makes me wonder if they actually believe it.
What Crawford said was actually racist. He should explain himself because he is saying that mixed race real world people are inherently racist. And before someone jumps all over this is the view of CRT. Mixed race couples and families can’t exist without oppression. He is just saying the quiet part out loud. Secondary application to gaming is less of an issue. DMs will do whatever they want.
I don’t think he’s saying mixed people’s existence is racist. I think it’s probably either the bioessentialist component of how it is handled, or the fact that the assumption if you’re half-elf is that the other half is human. That said, I wish he would have specified
It is racist. He can the WOTC staff believe in the one drop rule. You cannot be a fusion of two groups, but deep down you must be from A or B group ultimately. Half-elves are the stable fusion of two races into something unique, and that cannot stand it seems...
What is interesting to me is that Crawford's awful opinion has set forth many more, just as poorly reasoned opinions by the TTRPG community (not by present company of course). Jeremy Crawford thinks he can pander his way to a successful launch of this next DnD thing. It is doing a pretty decent job of getting people to forget about the OGL fiasco though.
I honestly dont see how half orcs or half elves COULD be seen as rascist. I am not american .. is this obvious to americans in some way? is it just something I don t get .. something related to the politics of your civil war and how there used to be slavers and all that?
A little. It's mostly due to not only the fear and subsequent racial discrimination that came from just the idea of ‘race-mixing’ but the in-universe origins of half-breeds like Half-Orcs and Half-Elves.
@@Lobsterwithinternet lol .. has it occurred to anyone that the parents of a half orc .. might well be two half orcs .. from a city of half orcs? My guess is the way it suggested that when you combine two races, you get one very specific result, or that the assumption is always that one half is human. It’s clear that he is not saying the existence of mixed race characters is racist, since they are developing rules for making that happen and that is not a concern to them

Right-wing creators had their stuff taken down for things left-wing creators aren't, that's the argument. You can look into the stuff going on with The Red Room and how they were removed for more information. Other people have covered the issue itself deeper than I can. My bit was more about the actual split on how to best deal with the situation and how that's driving people apart.

DTRPG needs to be careful because one day, soon, WotC is going to pull the 5E licensing from DTRPG and if they burn too many bridges with the OSR.
This could very well happen. I'm not sure that it would anytime soon, but maybe some time down the line.

Half-elves and half-orcs and half-lings all still live in my old school worlds. (I’ve still yet to see a full-blood ling, BTW.)
Lings are just real life country folk. :P
Any pushback from customers and publishers is all the excuse drivethrurpg needs to then claim something is offensive from those who push back.
No, you can’t be a half of anything you are one race (with its attributes and traits) that is wearing the skin suit of another.
More like you're just a human wearing a Spirit of Halloween costume and some face paint.
Exactly. Wizard's believes in the one drop rule, you must be one or the other, never a fusion of both.
