This is definitely one of my favorite Garcia Ballads. I saw my first show when I was 13 and instantly fell in love with the music and everything the Dead stood for. Garcia's guitar playing inspired me to pursue a career in music. I currently have a bachelor's and master's of Jazz guitar and I owe it all to Jerry. He was one of greatest improvisors of all time and the Dead was the Jam Band the world ever saw and they influenced all of us in some way. Thanks Jerry, I miss you my friend.
This is a perfect rendition to understand the music and art that came out of all the members of this beautiful ensemble. Jerry would scowl to see what you said about his brothers. And I feel sorry for you sir. I hope I can escape your ship of fools before they consume you.
no one will ever replace them for me my first concert at 27one of his last and i could've been following them for over 15 yrs. Had 3 kids and alcohol instead. Roads left untraveled,eh..the only thing I'd have given up is the alcohol . sober now and groovin happier. Still for me it was and always will be jerry with the band. not one without the other.
I agree with wblanken and others. Jerry is missed so much and he had a magic ingredient no one else had, but each member of the Dead's core musicians is a great musician in their own right. Phil is a god of bass as far as I'm concerned, I'll always have love for Bob in my heart, Mickey and Bill are pioneers in their drumcraft and some of the best all-around percussionists out there IMHO, Pigpen and Keith both brought their own wonderful elements. What an asinine description. Jerry was dead by the time I was 7. I'm so glad that the remaining members are still touring, even for us youngin's sake. Glad they are still around. I'm sad that I will never really experience Jerry, thank god for RUclips. Don't be so selfish. Be glad they're still bringing magic to all generations.
we are so luck to have your tube and all the dead music. they are all so good not clowns and a huge part of our rock history. thanks you all versions of the dead.
The genius of Jerry is that any other reasonably competent guitarist can play his stuff. Maybe not invent it, but play it. Anyone who knows the Dead knows they didn't develop in a vacuum. They were all integral parts and that's what both makes them unique and makes them able to outlast any individual member.
I have never heard anyone impugn the Dead as a band that merely plays behind Jerry. I would have to say whoever it is doesn't truly understand what the Grateful Dead actually were and how it was all the different influences each brought to the band that made them so unique. Granted Jerry was always a focal point as lead guitarists usually are and he certainly was the glue that kept them so tight (when he was off, they were off) But they had a synergy that was unique and powerful.
I'm only 15, and I agree completely, that's just the internet tho. A lot of society is just loosing sight of what's there. Grateful Dead gives me my sight, and pushes me to go forward. Keep on truckin' my brother or sister :)
To tour for almost 30 yrs, playing LIVE, on stage, before audiences of 60,000 people, almost 365 days of the year, is PHENOMENALLY EVERYTHING! The closest people to him i.e.mountain girl, etc., those r the ones who literally worked Garcia to death, by not wanting him to play small venues and laying on the weight of salaries, etc.,'cause Garcia was a caring sensitive dude. After 30 yrs, the inside became so big (everyone wanting to hang on Garcias' shoe strings) it wz impossible for him to remove
"phenomenally everything" not quite sure what that means. And to post such comments on RUclips, at least try to have a small idea of what you're talking about. Garcia and Mountain Girl were split up for over a decade by the time Garcia died in 95. And when they were together, she wanted him home, off the road, with the family. Garcia did feel obligated to continue touring in the later years, mainly because of the extended GD "family" and all those who worked and made their living from the GD hade become.
@@michaelkearns8499 Garcia also had to feed a $2000/day heroin & coke habit on top of everything else. There's no one answer to why he killed himself with drugs and touring too much, but the life of a musician is often chaotic and difficult. There's a reason so many die young. In a way he lived longer than many at that level of stardom.
This is single handed the best grateful dead comment I've ever seen on RUclips, Facebook, or Reddit. Thank you riderpoet, you are truely my brother/sister.
Jerry's loss was a tragic combination of disease and filling the emptiness of the road with drugs. What happened before and after his demise was equally tragic. People, including Jerry became dependent on the money touring brought in and that is what killed him. As long as there are musicians who will treat music as an ongoing dialog rather than a museum, the Dead will never die. To me, that is what is meant by, "They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones who do what they do."
If ya'll read "Twenty Years on the Bus" by Rock Scully. Jerry never wanted to be the "front man". Pig died, Phil threw out his voice, so Jerry took over. It just happened. They were a BAND--the greatest rock and roll band in the history of the know universe.
Jerry was the big cheese in the grilled cheese that was the grateful dead, but if there aint no bread in the bread box... then there certainly aint gonna be no god damn grilled cheese bro
Lol, I like when they throw in the "Ship of Fools" line at the bottom of the video a minute in after the first chorus...as if every Deadhead didn't know exactly what this was after the first 3 notes...
I don't like the comment either, but Jerry was the heart and soul of the Dead, and when he died, that sound went with him. I appreciate what Further and others are doing --- I respect it --- but for me, personally, Jerry's death was the end of it.
that Chicago concert for a bunch of fucking hedge fund managers with tix at thousands of dollars was not what the dead is about. I happened to drop some fencing off at further fest at Alpine a little more than a decade ago and the crew invited me to watch rehearsals & hang out. it was a beautiful time. I didn't even have to set up the fencing, everyone helped me set it up 😂 it's a great band and a great community, nothing will kill that - but that Soldier concert with Trey is not for regular fans who have been playing and listening to these songs for decades
What I think we have here is a failure to communicate. Music is all about communication. Jerry had a way to communicate with his music that created a connection with the audience that very few musicians could ever hope to achieve. On the other hand there would be no Grateful Dead with out the other aforementioned "clowns." The way Phil and Bobby communicate with the audience is simply different.. and perhaps on a different level. Don't downplay the importance of Phil and Bobby...
Jerry would have WANTED everyone to continue playing the music he loved.. why would you ever insult the people who love it as much as him? Phil and Bobby have as much right to continue on for Jerry as they do to stop playing if that suited them. I think its a tribute to him more than anything.. and its Furthur man.. the merry pranksters bus name.
Jerry was it ..! and everyone knew it,, the light of divine inspiration was in that beautiful old fat man who rocked..He was the Capt. who led the rest into the celestial realms .. Gettin angry about his legacy and the Furthur boys is useless...dont jump on the Ship of fools..Let your love light shine for all to see that you are the Eyes of the world
A bunch of clowns? You have no idea what you're talking about. Phil's bass is as integral to the Dead's sound as Jerry's guitar, and Bob Weir is widely regarded as one of the best rhythm guitarists there is. Not to mention that he wrote and sang some of the band's best material.
+Rick Montgomery You can`t forget Mickey Hart, Billy Kretuzmann. In my opinion No one played Guitar better than Jerry Garcia. and the Best Keyboard player EVER Brent Mydland.
+Phil M Well garcia always said Weir was a more accomplished guitar player than he was. Weir's chord vocabulary was way bigger. Garcia had the genius of simplicity.
Being a 20-something disenchanted with the decadence of contemporary western life, and seeing the destruction wrought by our corporations and governments, this song breaks me down to the core every time. This is perhaps my favorite version too.
grow up boy ,you are in a much better world than I was 73 years ago . no bombs dropping on you , no coal pollution and smog going to school, every thing was shit and cold , food rationing ,no new clothes ,and holes in my shoes , you dont know how lucky you are now to be alive today,, Conan UK ,,the world is at your feet ,just grab it
Tito, listening to this track and reading your comments makes me think you don't really know much about music. First thing that hit me was how tight the drumming is the time is perfect yet relaxed. Mr Lesh is playing wonderful sub hooks like he does. You know what Garcia would have to say to you?
Don't know how you arrive at the "clowns" characterization. Those guys did it right. When the main force in the band passed, they dropped the name, unlike a couple of other bands that come to mind, whose names I won't mention.
I love this whole show, but to say that the rest of the band are a bunch of clowns is comical in its self. JERRY himself even said that when "Pig Pen" died so did the Grateful Dead, and Bobby is a revolutionary Rhythm Guitar Player and Phil is literally the most musically knowledgeable in the ENTIRE band hands down. He literally had perfect pitch. So great video, but whoever wrote this description has a their head else where than on their shoulders.
I have been a Deadhead since 1970. I miss Jerry a lot, but the world keeps turning. Furthur is an enormously talented band that carries on the tradition. Tito, I totally disagree with you. I'm happy that Furthur keeps it all going.
3)way, shape or form, looking you straight in the eyes and stabbing you in the back.He cared so little about the money, he didn't even make a will and wasn't going to until that something that was supposed to happen in his life -happened. Garcia said, about an autobiography,"Something has to happen to me first."Garcia was a brilliant businessman. When you run an operation as big as Garcia's was, you have to depend on the money. At least, 50% of the profits went back in the band. With that much
There is no one like Garcia singing Ship of Fools! But there is no bass player as good as phil or drummers as good as Mick and Bill, no keyboardist as good as Brent and no rhythm guitarist as unique as Bobby. I think to argue or put down the other members is crazy! All of them together is what made the Grateful Dead so bad ass!!!!
Come on y'all, say it ain't so! I never thought I'd see the day when one of the G D.'s studio version of any of their songs has many, many more views than a live version of the same song 😳! I suppose that as long as there are songs to fill the air, it doesn't matter what version of the song that we are dancing to....??? To all up and coming Deadhead fans, The Boys really seem to shine a bit brighter when they performed outside of the studio!
the dead will never be as good as the days with Jerry and I firmly believe that, but at least they're trying to carry on, they're not letting the grateful dead die, so how can you call them "a buncha clowns"
Social reality summed up in 8:11. Accepting that every individual is essential in providing the crew for every other one you meet. I'm gunna learn my lessons the hard way good or bad roll with the punches , drink a beer laugh at how things could have gone better if. Stupidity and humanity are kindred and distinguished only by perspective. Live with it, awesome song
it's FURTHUR by the way. not furthEr. get that straight for starts. also the minus one's as i like to call them i will admit do a pretty damn good job. it's a cover band covering the greatest cover band that ever graced the world stage! i'm just glad i got to see jerry, brent, and the still live one's. goddess bless the grateful dead and all you heads out there.
The Grateful dead music is as close to heavens it gets on earth, Robert Hunters poetry with Jerrys sincere voice might be the closest thing to tickling the truth. That being said, I will choose The Grateful Dead over Jerry band any day, and the other members are all important, to say Bobby's Ace album is not better than any Jerry album, your lying to yourself. John Perry Barlow is again an American hero and Bobby learned a lot about delivery from jerry and spun his own web. This band, if you don't get it, thank you, more room for me to dance.
Wow I got ta get in on this conversation. Jerry is not replaceable but Further is doing a whole new gig, come on Further where are those original songs I am waitng and waiting and what are you waiting for. Take us further boys you can do it.
people that only talk about how awesome jerry was and how much we are missing out now obviously dont know that much about the dead and think they do. any real deadhead knows that jerry wasnt everything. its mroe than a one man show. id say bobby and phil will be remembered with a greater legacy as players. they are in their fucking late 60s and 70s and can still jam. plus bobby songs are just as good as jerrys...what about brent? best voice the dead ever had. jerry was great but lez not forget.
I dont want to spread negitivity that just wouldnt be me but i do want to point out that jerry would be out there glad that the other boys are still doing what they love for the heads out there still on Ship.so as any great pirate captian would say Sink with the Ship or walk the plank.if your not on bored cool but dont sink our Ship because some of us are still out there living the dream and are never going to stop no matter what comes call us fools or no I wont ever jump from this sinking ship
Hell yes, Further is not the GD but they very much have their own dynamic and energy. It's not better or worse, just different and I really like it. Nobody ever replaces Jerry, though: he was unique.
unfortunate comment, being married to such a beautiful piece of music. the opposite of what the Dead represent to me and those who've been inspired by them ...
4)care of everybody else's business. Of course, all want to know about his private life, even what he wore that night on stage. Cameras followed his every step. His entire life(private or not) is on celluloid. He was so cool, he let it fly. Respectfully, allow the man his privacy. SHEEE IT- 98% of his life is out there, anywho. Garcia changed the face of music and live performances, for ever. All performers, before him, did 3 min. tunes and was off. Garcia was the first to perform live james for
Furthur is a real good band, with a decent level of humility. Incidentally, they're playing some of my most favorite tunes, well. Just saw: Seven Walkers, nice versions of Birdsong and others; I think Furthur's the best incarnation post Garcia, RIP. Sure the Jerman was driving the vehicle, we are Deadheads not Jerheads. Only 1 in 10,00 come for the show, all of it. I just don't get why Billy and Mikey aren't brought in, or bought in. Tito, don't be a hater.
In the end my friend it comes down to money for just about all of them. Check out BB King's schedule. He plays enough dates to kill a man half his age. He has kids to pay for. Jerry had people he felt indebted to as well. Life on the road is really harsh. The boredom is incredible. You're a superstar for a few hours a day and the rest, you're just trying to pass the time. Read Steve Parrish' book about the fighting after Jerry died. He did love music but money became a necessary evil.
Hey man! Futhur is all us 21st century Deadheads have left, and yeah i'm sure you saw the Dead when they had Jerry and shit and it was awesome, but DON'T RUB IT IN! cause it sucks being on the other side.
Brent looking right at home with us, but it was later than I thought, when I first believed you, now I cannot share your laughter, SHIP O FOOL'S. THANKS NICE JAM ALWAYS HAS BEEN.
@sampywamp its not about Jerry Garcia its about family, built to last, if you go to the show just for the music you dont understand the grateful dead its a celebration GDF
Anyone who can't clearly hear that there is an entire band on that stage making the music is ignorant. Sure Jerry was a critical part of the Dead, but there is no reason to attack or name call the other fine musicians on the stage. This clip wouldn't be for shit without Phil on Bass, Bobby on guitar, Brent Mydland on Keys (whom revived Jerry's music and spirit BTW), and what do you expect Jerry to play the drums as well? This Tito fool (the poster) is a fool, sailing on a ship of fools!
Be GRATEFUL for whatever we have left

That being said, I will choose The Grateful Dead over Jerry band any day, and the other members are all important, to say Bobby's Ace album is not better than any Jerry album, your lying to yourself. John Perry Barlow is again an American hero and Bobby learned a lot about delivery from jerry and spun his own web. This band, if you don't get it, thank you, more room for me to dance.
Chills man
Tito..... Go take a nap. Please
All you have to do is open your eyes to hear and open your ears to see :-)
Amen
amen man, amen
What an appropriate anthem for our government and financial sector and the student loan/ debt-slavery fiasco.

Don’t go to college
Maybe students should learn something that is employable. If you take a loan pay it back.
Just do love the FULL band of The Grateful Dead . . . forever. And shut-up otherwise.
🥀💀🚀 RIP JERRY
Hell yes, Further is not the GD but they very much have their own dynamic and energy. It's not better or worse, just different and I really like it. Nobody ever replaces Jerry, though: he was unique.
unfortunate comment, being married to such a beautiful piece of music. the opposite of what the Dead represent to me and those who've been inspired by them ...
damn, Jerry!
Without Jerry.....There is no Dead
4)care of everybody else's business. Of course, all want to know about his private life, even what he wore that night on stage. Cameras followed his every step. His entire life(private or not) is on celluloid. He was so cool, he let it fly. Respectfully, allow the man his privacy. SHEEE IT- 98% of his life is out there, anywho. Garcia changed the face of music and live performances, for ever. All performers, before him, did 3 min. tunes and was off. Garcia was the first to perform live james for
what is wrong with posts. Really Jerry Garcia just rocked. No - thoughts and if You saw them live, You are blessed, Jerry was the band period.
Tito, don't be a hater.
awesome, Heartfelt version here~~much better than the "canned" (IMO) worthy of sharing, and so i will
BAM!
I miss your light
Gerry is the Man, for sure, But Phil Lesh kicks major ass as well!!! they are all great!!!
i agree 92.67% with TitoDead, he seems to know where it's at
brent not a clown the energy between thse 2 is amazing it came late but can u imagine if these two had some more time together .. together
You are correct
@sampywamp its not about Jerry Garcia
its about family, built to last, if you go to the show
just for the music you dont understand the grateful dead
its a celebration
GDF
Anyone who can't clearly hear that there is an entire band on that stage making the music is ignorant. Sure Jerry was a critical part of the Dead, but there is no reason to attack or name call the other fine musicians on the stage. This clip wouldn't be for shit without Phil on Bass, Bobby on guitar, Brent Mydland on Keys (whom revived Jerry's music and spirit BTW), and what do you expect Jerry to play the drums as well? This Tito fool (the poster) is a fool, sailing on a ship of fools!
Hey Tito, who is it up there playin with garcia? You think hed want the music to stop? Its that attitude the drove dude to withdraw.
Greateful dead germany
Mule sez--WOW--such a bad day Tito must have been having ---Love some of your vids Tito--but really--BIG NEG'S--Truly hope day's are better (~);}
