Passing under TOWER BRIDGE on board the paddle steamer WAVERLEY on 2nd October 2024. This was part of the cruise celebrating WAVERLEY's 78th anniversary since it was launched. WAVERLEY passes under Tower Bridge twice in both the upriver and downriver direction.
Thanks. Yes - it is loud! It is a steam whistle similar to those that were used on the old steam train locomotives. Steam comes out of the whistle whenever it is sounded!
Thanks. It is doing the same thing again later today so I might see if I can go and film it from the land this time. At least the weather is drier today!
Another great video. The PS Waverley is certainly one of my favourite ships .. I saw her on there River Clyde many many years ago. Travelling under Tower Bridge is a great experience too. My wife and I had a boat trip on The Thanes last year, but of course the bridge didn't need to open for us, we just passed below. Even my wife, who isn't really bothered about boats and ships was quite impressed, as we sailed under a red double decker bus
Thanks. Waverley is one of my favourite ships as well. It is on the Thames for just over another week (the final sailing is Sunday 13th before it heads back up to the Clyde) so hopefully there will be one or two more Waverley videos before then! Tower Bridge tends to only lift for cruise ships, superyachts or last masted vessels (mainly yachts or sailing barges). As the only cruise ships that sail this far up the Thames tend to be smaller (and thus more expensive to cruise on), Waverley is the only way for most members of the general public to pass under Tower Bridge with it is lifted. Although many people enjoy watching Tower Bridge lift, a significant number also aren't really that bothered. I have been lucky enough to see it lift a few times and am always struck by the number of people that just carry on walking by as if nothing is happening. Then again, I probably would not be interested in other things that other people are interested in!
@@ThamesShips Thanks for the great reply. This summer I was supposed to go to see Tower Bridge opening but I forgot all about it. Hopefully I'll see it next year, as I'm pretty sure we'll be heading to London again in August.
Thanks. Yes - a trip up the Thames is always an enjoyable experience. I remember watching your video of sailing up the Thames on Marc Prior. Very interesting!
@@ShipsandShipping I filmed as we went past and I can take screen shots from the video which will work. I'll have a quick look to see what I have of berth 4 but can give you plenty of the other berths.
@@ShipsandShipping If it is easier, I can do a post on the YT community and post some images on there. Once you have saved them at your end I can delete the community post again.
Thanks! 👍 No - I have never worked at sea. I am just a keen enthusiast! I am actually interested in most forms of transport but there are a large number of people that film videos at the London airports and train stations so I concentrate on the river traffic.
You can vidit thetower bridge contril roim too, gor a good vantage, and photo point of HMS Belfsst orvif there are any "suprt yachts" or small passengers anchored near

Great to have this view from the Waverley. Have been watching her in the Solent. Fantastic watch.
Thanks. Yes - I like watching the "Solent Ships" YT channel. It is excellent for seeing the cruise ships depart.
That must have been a magnificent experience for you! How beautiful. The horn is very loud!

Thanks. Yes - it is my yearly treat!
very good 👍
Thanks!
Excellent video! Did that trip from Ipswich in about 2005, and did it single-handed in 2000 when I was sailing my little yacht Pamela Jane

@@ThamesShips I meant to ask - did you get any stills or shots of London Gateway, especially the upstream end, berth 4, as you went past, please?
