  • The Force is strong in Tintoy Chou. The shadow puppet designer is using “Star Wars” characters like Darth Vader, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker to get audiences interested in the ancient art of wayang kulit. We visit Chou in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to see how he and a 13th generation master puppeteer known as Pak Dain are taking delighted audiences to a galaxy far, far away with every epic performance.

      I agree, but unfortunately they could if they want to. Though for all we know maybe the guys in this film have already obtained permission to use the storyline and characters. Problem with such successful films is that they become so ingrained in popular culture that people start to think the storyline belongs to everyone ... sad truth is that isn't so, yet, until this one falls into the public domain.

Seems that it is an ancient form of entertainment that does not belong to ONE particular country or culture, and it had already been popular hundreds of years ago from the eastern hemisphere of the globe to (China) to the southern hemisphere (India) to the western countries in Europe. Everybody should embrace the inclusivity and not fight and further divide our world.

    Hey! Im from indonesia, and i just learned that there are wayang kulit too in malaysia! It made sense that we share the same culture since we came from the same ancestor and we also live close by to each other, so its really cool knowing this wayang kulit in star wars version from malaysia!
    ( honestly we dont have to fight over who owns what, in my opinion we should all appreciate, respect, and celebrate our similarities!✨👏🏻 )

    Even in India we have similar shadow puppetry called 'thol pavai koothu ' with Ramayana and Mahabharata stories ,I think Malaysia, Indonesia and India shares many cultural similarities

      Historically Ancient South East Asians followed the Hindu faith, when Arab traders or Muslim traders came the SE Asians converted to Islam but kept some hindu traditions alive.

    Had a chance to watch it during the 2014 Festival Belia Putrajaya (Putrajaya Youth Festival). As someone who never even watch traditional wayang kulit show (& Star Wars), it was indeed a mesmerizing experience. just look for Tintoy Chuo on FB; he always updates his activities.

    This is actually quite smart move, considering that long ago, wayang kulit was used to tell stories, whether it is folklore, legends, and more. (If i'm not mistaken, the stories that these wayang performed usually have some kind of mystical or magical element in the stories)

      They already submit it to UNESCO as indonesia heritage. It is a known fact that Malaysia always claimed Indonesia's heritage, like Batik and wayang.

      Avatar Aang Wayang Kulit might look a little bit like the Amber Island Players
      Avatar Korra maybe harder and they may or may not get rid of Asami due to what happen on the final book(Our counrty are really anti-LGBTQ and didnt even air the final book of Korra...)

    Wayang kulit is also Indonesian, it is an art throughout Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor and Brunei. It is still kept alive in the kampungs of Indonesia but I'm not sure about Malaysia.

      Kita masih menjaga wayang, cuman sepengetahuan saya pementasan wayang di Indonesia khususnya di tanah jawa pementasan wayang kulit klasik memiliki pakem-pakem tertentu atau aturan yang sudah ada sejak dulu kala. Pakem-pakem atau aturan ini masih digunakan sampai hari ini. Esensi wayang kulit bukan hanya sebagai pentas, tetapi juga pada awalnya sebagai media hal-hal tertentu. Hadirnya pakem ini bertujuan untuk mencegah pemudaran arti dan esensi wayang kulit agar tetap bisa dijaga ke orisinilannya. Masih banyak kok daerah di Jawa yang mementaskan wayang kulit, biarpun jumlahnya tidak sebanyak dulu.

      Tentu khusus di pulau jawa, wayang kulit masi sangat terjaga keasriannya, emangnya anda dapat berita dari mana yang mengatakan kita sudah meninggalkan budaya wayang kulit. Menurut saya sebagai orang indonesia melihat tayangan video ini cukup miris dikarenakan yang serumpun dari indonesia dan malaysia adalah bangsa melayu, bukan bangsa jawa, karena bangsa jawa sendiri merupakan suku asli di indonesia, jadi tidak ada sangkut paut wayang kulit sama malaysia karena wayang kulit sendiri berasal dari Jawa. Tapi menurut saya bisa saja akulturasi wayang kulit sudah terjadi di malaysia pada saat kerajaan majapahit menguasai nusantara hingga bahkan ke Burma(Myanmar).
