Good luck on opening night! People who don't make art often don't understand the significance of an exhibition for the artist- it may look like a party, but there are specific goals and a plan to be carried out. Of course, the exhibition is the time to generate sales and get some published reviews, but often it's also the time for the artist to privately reflect back on a period of creative output, before starting work on the next theme or series. Artists who are still in training can benefit from watching how a professional prepares for a show and conducts themselves during the opening, because there's much more to it than just the art on the walls!

I can't agree with this enough. I volunteered for an arts center as a young arts student just to gain this very experience. It's so important. I mean, I still hate openings, I'm autistic and social situations are super uncomfortable for me, but watching professionals prepare for a show and helping them with installation was invaluable for making that easier. Thanks to Wendy for showing us how it's done!

You two are the sweetest. Good for you for having priorities and knowing what you want. Five years ago I bought my first house at age 63. I knew what I wanted, and settled on good-enough for various reasons: Proximity to my aging mother, proximity to a small town, safe street in case the cats got out, quiet neighborhood, affordable, a garden space, proximity to then-employers… And to be honest I’m not sure what I want exists! I do have an amazing home now, with an art studio, and it’s safe and quiet. It took me about a year to find this place. I extended my search a little farther and I’m a little wider than I wanted, just to make sure. I looked at dozens of places both online and in-person. I even made an offer on one but the inspection revealed the house too expensive to fix. I did work with a realtor because she had access to more complete listings and could get keys. One day I was driving south on an freeway from a viewing when I realized I had to use the restroom badly! I saw a sign for a town I didn’t know and pulled in to find a restroom. The town was kind of cute! After using the restroom I decided to have lunch. I began to realize that the town felt really nice. I walked around a little bit and got excited. I had a weird feeling that this town might be my town. Called the realtor who found a few places to look at. A few days later we opened the door to a house and had the same reaction: this house feels good! And weirdly it was almost the same layout as the apartment I was living in. It felt like home right away. My offer was accepted and I’ve been here for five years. I’m so happy I bought this house even though it’s not the perfect dream home. It’s a lovely refuge and stepping stone to another chapter yet to be written. I am convinced you and James will find the home you’re looking for as long as you’re clear on what you want, which you are and let the universe guide you, which you’re great at! 🥰🌺 🏠

I wish you the best of luck in your home search because finding the right place is so important to having peace of mind and just having a happy life. We’ve had our house for 21 years and it took a while for it to feel like home, it was really the only thing we could find in our price range at that time. But now it is home and we’re very happy there but it took a few years for us to get there. The house needed work and we’re still working on it, but ultimately it has the things we need the most. I do think it’s impossible for most of us to find the perfect home, something stands in the way, whether it be location or cost , or something else ,but we can find one that is a good home. That we can be happy and comfortable in.
But once in a while, that perfect one comes along, and I wish that for you! I hope your show goes well, thanks for taking us house hunting. That was a lot of fun.

Here in Australia we are in the same position. Rentals are over priced and unattainable for the average person or family. So the consequence of this is many people including families ending up homeless either couch surfing or literally living rough. This housing crisis seems to have become worldly not just nationally and it is very very sad.

The US is the same. I work a full time job in the field I went to uni for, but don’t make enough income to afford renting a house/apartment alone in the place where I live. I have to have housemates, all also working full time jobs, to have a place to stay. It’s kind of depressing.

I agree with what you say. Having a place to feel like home and for it to be affordable is what makes us all feel grounded and safe. I rent and each year I worry about having to move on. The government needs to offer affordable living for all.

I live in a flat, but it’s in a cooperative housing complex with three buildings. There are beautiful gardens that certain people take responsibility for but that we all get to share in the joy of the flowers, Birds and butterflies. And this year we’re talking about starting a communal garden to be able to donate fresh produce to the food bank. I don’t have my own garden, but I do get to share one with my neighbours. And I overlook a river from my large balcony which is lovely. I go to sleep, listening to the geese talking to each other. The other wonderful thing about cooperative living is that the rent can be geared to income, which helps people who couldn’t otherwise have a nice home, enjoy a comfortable space. And I love the sense of community. We have social events together, chats in the elevator, and longer chats outside in the garden. I am very blessed and recognize the privilege that I have. I’m pleased that our government is putting more money into cooperative housing because I think it will be one answer to the housing crisis.

Same situation in USA. So many ppl put out so landlords can raise rents. Some simply sell homes and the renter must leave. One lady in my hometown had lived in the same rental for years and her lease wasn't renewed. She was given notice. She went to court and then was given one week to get out. How does one pack a multi-year life in one week, let alone find somewhere to go when there isn't anyplace to go. President's, kings and such will never do right for the ppl. We are all on the stockmarkets and make money for them when our lives are thrust around. Lovely art ! Thank you for sharing your struggles. Hope all goes well.

When we bought our home a few years ago it had no private outside space whatsoever. Couldn’t even hang my knickers on the line without having to say hello to the neighbours 😂 but we could see the potential. We were able to turn what was a big block paved caravan parking area into a small garden with a summer house. It was incredibly hard work but I honestly think it’s one of my proudest achievements. The garden is still evolving (which they obviously do) but it’s all new to me. I sit out there in our little private sanctuary and smile at what we’ve achieved. I hope you find your perfect cosy place for you both Wendy. Lots of love.

    Dear Wendy and James,
We looked for 6 months here in Sydney and in Goulburn. Our stuff was in storage for 3 months. Every few days we looked, travelled, and moved to yet another Airbnb or hotel in a completely different direction.
We found very little that we could apply for, as they were all pretty bad.
It was a lot, it nearly sent us mad, well it did actually. Our lack of direction home and constant movement, did our heads in. We went to locations in Doll's Point, that kind of were a park base home feeling. We had to wrap Christmas gifts in the car. We had to dress in carpark toilets to go out one night on a date night.
We are very happy here in Dulwich Hill, we found it!
    Tick, done, happier!
Here are our clues for your home hunting! (And sanity nearby too)
Keep finding specific manifestations for your dream home, on your I want and I need list.
Meet the neighbours/owners if you can. We have places like Gumtree for ads to skip the real estates.
Check over fences for dogs, birds or animals or renovations that are sad, noisy or alone.
Look at the same place twice.
Always improve your standard of living, going upwards and out.
Ask as if you are entitled to the very best, not just as a human, but because you are worthy of the best.
Never settle on something, even if tired and going bonkers.
Manifest the criteria, as you want more and more definition, be specific.
We stayed 3 days in a place we loved as a kind of "Airbnb 3 day trial" with the owner as a pre rental agreement. Luckily we did, we didn't rent this country property after all, not for us! (too quiet! it had all the right ingredients, but wasn't a cake)
Privacy is a curtain, or large potted plants on our balcony, and moving blankets hung over rods, are really good to hang up, if you want a quiet garage space to film in which is really cheap soundproofing spaces.
Take a day off, have a weekend off, have a date night, don't look online or drive anywhere.
Find the very best place you want to live for the one shop you love to do your shopping, the cafe you want to visit once a week, and perhaps the yoga or community you wish to find that you can attend, all of this is your home space.
Follow the butterfly and moth, and where they land, is home, or close to it, or the feeling of home. Butterflies love positive safe areas to hang around and sip nectar.
Keep doing it, keep saying what you want to the world, recharge mid week, visit friends, tell strangers what you want, the universe somehow, hears it. Clarifying week by week more details that you need.
Find nice real estate agents and owners.
Artistes' are discriminated against, as they think we are sloppy with our paint, and perhaps your landlord figured you were now a channel so you could afford a rent hike, and they think we are bums.
When you leave your old rental, spend up to 350 (pounds) to clean it professionally, including outdoor areas, sheds, and windows, with photos you can send to the new rentals, as a kind of "look at us guarantee". It is so worth it for someone at that point to do their best.
You can move to storage, as you did in the past to drive the van around, and is much cheaper than rent, so find a base that you can call home, even if it your mum and dads, a friend or a park or a place you love, go there often in a week. Visit the storage, have a box of art materials, and unopened mail, parcels, and find comfy queen beds as the main goal in Airbnb or hotels.
Sad, or frantic energy homes, can not be saged with burning white sage, as it is too strong a negative, bad or funny feeling, stays sad or anxious.
Don't mention animals, even if this is your intention one day.
But more than anything, have the little things with you, like your tea cupboard, a flask, a picnic that make you feel whole.
Good luck friends, I trust you will do fine, and find exactly your home you want!
    In kindred spirit,
    butterfly and echidna spirit
    Eliza
    Dulwich Hill, Inner West Sydney
    Thursday 6th of October 2022
    4:26pm
A lovely village feel, with lovely pretty art deco and federation homes, trees and a view, two balconies that I can grow on, and outdoor miniature wooden libraries to share a book, and free lemons in boxes on stone walls for passerby people to take with them. A cafe nearby, close to Aldi. A home that feels great, at the back, so no noise, no headlights.
A year and a half here now, we are getting more sorted, with love , we know xx

Having a house where we feel at home is essential and the house doesn’t need to be huge, expensive or have a swimming pool! I live in an old rented house, it’s not big, but I have a room for a an art studio and I have the privilege of not having neighbours in front of me! I have total privacy when I open my windows and balcony. I would like to have a garden, like you, Wendy, but houses with gardens in Portugal are very, very expensive, so I have my plants. I’m very happy in my little old house, it’s my gate to heaven, specially during these last troubled months.

Wendy and James- I wish you all the best with house hunting. I moved from one state to another- Kentucky to Michigan. I've been here since mid June, working part time jobs and looking for an apartment. For the last month and a half I've been house sitting - no pay just exchanging housing for the care of the home. It is most unsettling and am NOT AT ALL in a space where I feel comforable Painting. My soul has suffered. However, the owners of the house are also oweners of some apartments and they have one that I may take. I looked at it yesterday- it is 552 sq ft and they dropped the rent for me -since they know my daughter. It was $1100 a month and they brought it down to $850 plus utilities and an additional $50 for the garage. Luckily I am now working a permanent part time job and bringing in a regular income. It will be tight, but at least it will be my own space, where I will be Creating again. I am 70 and wonder how long I will work to Live! I'm thinking another 10 years at least, who knows.

We actually have a nice little house and yard, but we are determined to find a really big piece of land with no association with rules about what we can do with our property. We have to ask permission and get approval for everything from house color to fences and landscaping around here. Those places exist, but we have to weigh conveniences like easy internet access, stores nearby and all those things that make living where we are desirable now. The best thing about where we live now is that we have no neighbors behind us, only beside us, so we have a view out the back of just pond and woods, even though we don't own it that view is priceless!

Number 1 for me is privacy when I step out the back door - somewhere where I can do all my gardening, sit, and not be overlooked. You will find a place. I am a great believer in everything happens for a reason. The house I live in, for 26 years now, has many things I do not like inside but my back garden is private and I love it. The house viewings were exciting, then the surprise visit at the end...I could see the "here we go again" on your face. After a while you have to ask yourself how many times can one go through the anticipation, excitement, then frustration when things fall through. I have to agree with you and James, that last house was very nice! Love the very spacious garden, room for lots of veggies! Sunroom looking out over the garden was nice too, good place for your indoor plants in winter. I know you can't get away as often as you'd like just to have a little privacy, decompression time, etc., and that's important, so we compromise.
I feel you're getting closer to that perfect place, and when it happens, you have to snatch it up because housing opportunities go fast these days. Pressure is reals, UGHS! Thank you again for taking us with! 🥰

OMG! That first house reminded me of when my husband and I were stationed at RAF Innsworth back in 1999. The curtains, toilet room and kitchen are almost identical. I cried when we moved in lol We went from a beautiful house to that and it was awful lol

I agree with how you felt about these houses. You need a WENDY house! Hold out for the one that will make you feel like dancing naked in the garden in moonlight and makes you feel sheer JOY. Don't "settle for..." It will be worth waiting for! Best of luck with the art show, and thanks for taking us on your journeys - of art, life and houses!

Another good one. Thank you to you and James. I live in Florida and have tiles and engineered wood floors. I miss the carpeting from up north especially in the fall and winter. But, we make do with what we have and count our blessings. We were not affected by the storm other than extra rain and some winds. Your videos and art are a comfortable place for me to go and learn from. Cheers.

I actually like the vintage carpets in the 1st house, they remind me of one my parents had when I was young, but the wallpaper would have to go. The second house was very nice but I agree with you on the no privacy. If neither are a good fit, you will find the right place in the right time.

While I did like this and that from each, I just know there is the perfect place waiting for you both and will appear when you least expect it! Maybe the fairies haven't made it just right for you yet and are working away to get it perfectly perfect just for you both 🤗...hugs from Kentucky....♥️🧚‍♀️

Even though we are just internet friends and so I don't truly know your style, whenever I think of you and James after seeing your house hunting videos my sense of you both is a quiet cottage on an acerage where you can experience peace away from the energies of a town or city. Good luck on your quest...maybe one will pop up to buy?!

I agree with your reservations on both houses. Are you able to look on the outskirts of town where there might be more privacy and garden space? You might be able to find something a little older in need of some fixing up outside of town that no one wants to take on. Outdoor space is VITAL.

Wendy I totally agree with you 100%, the housing situation is sad on a global scale I feel. I am in Québec, Canada and it's no better unfortunately. Like yourselves I dream of moving into a wee house with a yard so that I can grow my own veggies & walk barefoot in the grass. All the best in finding your house 😊. Let's us know how your art exhibit went. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and fabulous art with us 💖🙏.
