For me as far as remakes go? It...DEPENDS ON THE REMAKE! The Resident Evil Remakes are all different enough, in terms of mechanics and overall tone, to register as distinct artistic pieces of their own and worthy of a GOTY slot. But, on the other side of the divide, you have cases like Metroid Prime Remastered or Super Mario RPG. The question, in this medium, is always this: Is this a remake more like West Side Story 2021 or a remake more like Psycho 1998? The former can justify a GOTY nod, the good versions of the latter are arguments for a dedicated remake category.
Exactly about the RE remakes , they are superb. Well worth the investment as well as I own them and can play them anytime , anywhere I choose because they are offline. Well done and well crafted.

Playing through Baldur's Gate 3 now so I cannot decide if it's my favorite game this year or not just yet. Of the games I finished (most), I have to go with Alan Wake 2. Spider-Man was cool but probably an 8.5/10 at the most for me. It didn't drive the gaming space forward. It was a pretty safe approach.
Idk Hogwarts legacy didn’t do anything better than most nominees in their respective category. You’d have to knock one game out in order to put that game in. Don’t really think Hogwarts legacy had that much of an impact besides it selling a bunch and then falling off the month after it released. I haven’t heard anyone talk about that game after it came out.
Hogwarts legacy should've atleast been nominated for: 1) Best music (Good enough for a grammy nomination, but not good enough for GA) 2) Best Art Direction (Hogwarts was phenemonal) 3) RPG ( Starfield with a metacritic rating lower than HL and a much much worse user rating got nominated.) No nomination clearly highlights the moronic agenda at display.
@@jal.ajeera 1. I THINK The Grammys can only nominate something with some level of separate physical release. Final Fantasy XVI is a kinda weird miss from Grammy, even IF that's true, but Hi-Fi Rush isn't dropping the soundtrack separately until the following eligibility window, Zelda's isn't even out yet/might not release separately at all, Alan Wake II, well, the GAME didn't come out within the current Grammy's eligibility window, let alone a separate release for the soundtrack and Baldur's Gate III only did a digital drop. Essentially: The Game Awards nominated a field mostly consisting of "Not Eligible for the 66th Grammys". Most of the TGA nominees MIGHT show up at the 67th Grammys. 2. The ONLY candidate that wouldn't read as some level of aesthetically tasteless to drop from the field we got is Lies of P. The amount of points difference on the highest number of reviews necessary to make it worth the dirty feeling is certainly a bit more than 4 Metacritic points. Lies of P got a flat 80 on the highest number of reviews vs. Hogwarts Legacy's 84 on the highest number of reviews. Honestly, with how the year went on to release what feels like a bajillion bangers, I can understand people forgetting about Hogwarts Legacy, because I didn't either. It feels like it came out last year or something. As for FF16, man it's just absolutely outlclassed in its genre, BG3 felt like an actual RPG whereas FF16 by comparison is an action adventure game, barely an RPG.

Actually this is only the third Mario nomination since the first game awards in 2014. For reference both of the god of war games that have released in that window were nominated, and the same can be said of Marvel’s Spiderman series. Fromsoft has received 4 nominations since 2014 (including 2 wins). Honestly I think it’s actually pretty hard for a Mario game to receive that kind of praise because it runs so counter to everything else that’s popular and celebrated in the industry these days. It’s about the exact opposite of something like god of war or elden ring. Even nintendos other flagship series legend of zelda (as well as Metroid which was nominated in 2021) leans a lot more into what is currently popular. Obviously Mario games sell like crazy, but I think they actually face a bit of an uphill battle when it comes to adult non-casual gamers, i.e. the people care about the game awards. Not trying to worship Nintendo or anything, but I just don’t think the narrative that Mario games receive some kind of preferential treatment holds any truth. The three nominations it’s received have all been for fantastic games that do something nobody else is doing right now, and that’s why they were nominated. Not because they’re Mario games.
I love Idris Elba but he does not deserve best performance just because he's the only "big Hollywood name." My guy couldn't even hold a consistent accent throughout the expansion. It's got to be either Neil or Ben no question
Win Game of the Year? 50/50 chance. Sweep? No. GOTY: Toss up between it and TOTK. Game Direction: Tears of the Kingdom. For direction, specifically, I don't think anything's beating the pure technical wizardry of Ultrahand. Narrative: Baldur's Gate III. Score and Music: Hi-Fi Rush Audio Design: Hi-Fi Rush Performance: Yuri Lowenthal, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Community Support: Baldur's Gate III RPG: Baldur's Gate III (So...3 or 4 wins of 8 nominations. That's...not a sweep.)
@@whenallelsfails21 Okay. GOTY: As I said, not willing to give it more than a toss up. Game Direction: Sorry, I think this is kind of an easy guess, even IF TOTK loses GOTY. Narrative: Easy guess. Score and Music: Hard guess, so defaulted to Best = Most/Most Highlighted logic. Music kind of IS the plot of Hi-Fi Rush! Audio Design: Same, for same reason. Performance: 5/9 prior winners are Sole/Primary Playable Character roles. 3 Men (Nolan North, Roger Clark, Christopher Judge), 2 Women (Melina Jeurgens, Laura Bailey). So Neil Newbon (Secondary Playable Character Role) and Idris Elba (NPC Role) are probably out. And, the last time a non GOTY nominee WON for Performance was Melina Jeurgens and that was both a SUPER Awards Bait performance AND 6 ceremonies ago, so that means it's almost certainly not Ben Starr or Cameron Monaghan. That leaves us with a 50/50 guess between Yuri Lowenthal (a long term voice acting lifer playing an excellent version of iconic superhero Spider-Man doing his version of The Black Suit Saga) and Melanie Liburd (a first time voice actor playing a new character and fresh off The Idol). Yeah, it's Yuri Lowenthal. And, yeah, this being this much of a walk is why The Game Awards having ONE Performance category is ludicrous. I can’t give best ongoing game to cyberpunk cuz I don’t think fixing your broken game (as much as I love the game now) and releasing a dlc 3 years later counts as an ongoing game. i love baldur gate 3 and happy if get goty! But my game of the year is final fantasy xvi it's a shame that no one pays much attention, it has an absurd soundtrack, amazing storytelling, no soo much bugs ,combat is a bit of a weak point
I understand you not wanting to give a remake GOTY because its foundations were already laid out, but to be fair, they still had to remake re4 into the new engine. Whereas games like spiderman, mario and zelda feel much more similar to their previous games than re4 does to its original. Id say re4 deserves a shot, just because its the "same game" it was still different enough to establish itself and introduced just as many innovations as these other sequels
Are you able to skip categories for voting? It feels like there should be an opportunity to plead the 5th for any category you don’t feel qualified to vote for. Lots of “yeah - that’ll do” votes for the more obscure categories.

That’s the thing tho because it doesn’t really deserve much outside of music but they are using it being a strong year as an excuse for the real reason why
As someone who hasn't played either, Hogwarts Legacy deserves to be on the list more than Starfield. I can't say for what it should've been nominated for but meh.
Hogwarts Legacy sold a lot but is a mid game and has everything mid. Its good, for a short time, super hyped to be a wizard just to fall flat with a huge empty map, same issue with Starfield.
totally agree, don’t know what you’d even nominated it for. It wasn’t best RPG, It wasn’t best game of the year, the soundtracks of other games were better. I enjoyed my time with hogwarts but it was Mid
I agree its not game of the year level good. Overall its not that great but individual categories like art design, music etc it deserved some nominations like other games. But they completely ignored it
Hogwarts was better than StarField imo. Why do people try to tear other games down to justify the piss poor excuse of StarField with all that hype and the lies of paid shill content creators.
Honestly I do not have a GOTY this year Played Kotor 1 for the first time so it would be my GOTY. But I feel Like BG3 should get for Putting CRPGs back on the map.
They have really spammed Alan Wake 2 in every category. The game was alright but really not THAT great. They are obviously overhyping this game when there are so many other great games like FF16, Armored Core 6, Hogwarts etc that deserved more nominations in other categories but were ignored
Ff16 is a complete waste of 70 hours. Story is boring as hell, combat is numbingly simple even towards the end game. Vast as an ocean, deep as a puddle. And hogwarts was just a ubisoft game with the label of Harry Potter. Alan wake 2 narratively and gameplay wise is fresh and captivating imo. Alan rewriting reality in his segments alone sold the goty nomination for me(still chose baldurs gate, but I can see why it's there).
Think Hogwarts would've done better if the story was a little more compelling, personally I would've preferred our Main Character to have been an actual actor/actress instead of some nameless student, Also the game is optimized quite poorly, i shouldn't need to install mods to get low CPU temps and low memory consumption.
I thought Hogwarts Legacy was pretty mid and there were a lot of stuff that's not in the game that made it feel like a diamond in the rough for me, but I also thought that it was a total snub for them to not have the best selling game of 2023 to not be nominated in any categories. Let's just be real, it's just because of the JK Rowling controversy and not because the game didn't deserve to be nominated in any category, especially in Music where it was nominated in the Grammy's apparently. Also I'm not a fan of RE4: Remake being in the GOTY category because the story is still the same. It's unfair to the other devs who racked their brains out for years to bring us new stories, but another game which is just a remake with updated graphics engine and new mechanics gets the nomination. Imo, Phantom Liberty is more of a new game than RE4.
Didn't they also have to fire a developer due to his RUclips videos as well? Plus she still is going on with the controvery now and gotten worse which doesn't help much. Though I agree on RE 4, it seems wierd to have a remake take a top spot.

Calling Alan Wake 2 and acid trip and Spider-Man. 2 gamplay bland after a while just shows how 🤔 Bad, you misunderstood those games. Allen Wick is very complex and has a lot of layers to it. In Spider-Man had probably the best combat on the year. There were numerous upgrades over the original. Where the hell is hogwarts Legacy. Best selling 2023 game. My personal goty. I would Replace AW2 with HL in nominations. I wasn't a Harry Potter fan and after HL, I might be! @jeffsroyalbodyguard7642 of course not. But it is a good game. Deserving of multiple nominations in different categories. It is probably my personal goty. So in this case, best selling is also good.
Seeing the same 3 games that all released in October be nominated is making my head spin more than Baldur's Gate 3. 😅 I can see Alan Wake 2 being nominated in one or two categories but it feels artificially pushed so hard.
gotta be real here it wasn't nominated for political reasons. i actually love the game because before coming in, i was never in to these types of games where magic and fantasy are involved and this also includes baldurs gate 3, which also suprised me at how good it was when i actually played. for example, i was blown away at how smooth the mechanics are and dodge mechanics are in hogwarts and how really open world the game is. with baldurs, the story line is gripping and the amount of things you can do to change the story is crazy.

Hogwarts legacy is the most average game i played all year and i 100% agree with it gettin zero nominations, especially considering how strong the competition is this year. It's just not good enough. I don't understand why ppl keep pointing to its sales, as if they somehow were indicative of the game's outstanding quality. They're not, and they don't matter for this kind of award. If any game got snubbed, that's octopath traveler 2. The most likely reality is the following: the game was released very early in the year and it was unremarkable, which most likely resulted in many judges simply forgetting about it. Nothing more. Some ppl think outlets have a regulated voting process for TGA, this is completely false. Most outlets simply tell one of their staff to pick some nominees and don't even talk about it among themselves. Some of the outlets don't even publish game reviews, etc. This is the most likely source of all anomalies in the nominations, though I honestly don't consider HL situation an anomaly at all.

Hogwarts Legacy not getting any nominations is literally example of everything that is wrong with the world 🤦🏻♀️ Also love how you sit with your cat like a Bond villain or something 😂
I agree mostly with Luke's votes except for CP2077 best ongoing game. It's fantastic for sure but they just fixed their shit and added an excellent DLC. Full stop. It's not an ongoing game. For the rest yes practically all my votes went to Baldur's Gate 3, it's such a phenomenal experience and on top there's the replayability so for me that's a no-brainer. It's a SHAME Hogwarts not nominated and I agree with Luke remakes shouldn't be nominated for GOTY in a year full of brand new excellent releases. Don't get me wrong RE4 is a stunning remake, loved it!
I don't get your critique on Resident Evil 4 man. Resident Evil 4 remake took 5 years to make. Just as much work effort and sweat that was put into any other game on that game of the year list was also put into Resident Evil 4. Capcom's best team was in charge of it. The only simple thing you could say they had to go off on was story beats and characters. If you played the original Resident Evil 4 enough like I have there's a pretty drastic difference in the the Remake and the Original. Like I said, sure you've got similar story flow and areas that you're traveling to but to insinuate that not a lot of effort was put into the Remake is completely false. Also, for what it's worth Resident Evil 4 remake is currently ranked number 30 on Steams all time rating list for all the video games on their store. Higher than Baldurs Gate 3. Quite impressive.
"so much to make baludrs gate 3 work" Then why aren't other devs "wowing" at the game like they did with totk? Totk is a coding masterpiece. And wasn't buggy at all, unlike baldurs gate 3. Baldurs Gate 3 is the most overrated game I've ever seen, no clue what people see in it.
I don’t care about Luke’s picks. I’m just commenting to state that ALL awards shows are fucking stupid and the only reason to watch TGA is for new game announcements if you absolutely just can’t wait to watch the trailers individually. Otherwise, awards shows are a bit like watching people smell their own farts.
You're right, and especially because the players votes don't necessarily impact the final decision for the GOTY award, the final vote is determined by a group of game critics. So lame.
games for impact is not a real thing lol it comes off as a consolation prize category for "those" types on twitter. If those games were any good you could throw em into any other category (art, music, indie game, narrative) without anyone questioning it but since they arent we have a nonsense category to essentially calm that particularly vocal crowd on socials.
It blows my mind that a CRPG belonging to and IP that’s more than 25 years old has a real shot at sweeping the Game Awards. It goes to show that a team of dedicated and passionate developers can prioritize player experience over monetization and still make waves and a boatload of profit along the way. It’s such a wonderful middle finger to these massive publishers and developers. I love to see it.
@dirtylefty727 Eh. Baldur's Gate 2 is still a far better CRPG where it counts. BG3 I wouldn't even call an actual Baldur's Gate game. Just another, though unusually high production value, Divinity Original Sin.
I think the question about RE4R is whether you think the game changed enough to be considered a different game. I do, and if anything, it's a remake not a remaster, but it's also absolutely fine if you disagree.
Hogwarts legacy not even nominated for anything , AC mirage not nominated for best music despite having some of the best Music this year The Rigged awards, i lost all respect for the GA literally none at all
bomb rush cyberfunk not even getting nominated for indie of the year or most impactful is criminal, such a good game and it hasn't dropped below 98% positive on steam since its launch, but starfield that dropped down to mixed reviews did get nominated...
I don't think nominating RE4R for Goty is bad, for many people as me, it's actually first time we play RE4 + like remasters are more of just building on already existing thing, but remakes are actually building from ground up, obviously this year Alan 2 and Baldurs deserve it more, but some other year with weaker line up I would gladly gave it to re4r
Hogwarts legacy is a good 8/10 elevated by its IP. That’s not worthy of GOTY, can’t see any category that it got snubbed in any more than other games. Tough year.
Game awards have been a joke for a long time. From making last of us 2 game of the year lol to disrespecting days gone. Game journos are awful and everyone understands this.
I was not surprised to see HL didn't get Any nominations after all the controversy. It deserves the recognitions, but these people are too scared of the loud mouths on Twitter!😂 It's embarrassing, even though the game obviously cannot compete with BG3. If that game does not win game of the year, I'm calling it rigged!

Sf 6 was a good choice for accebility. Their new modern controls makes it so i can play with my 7 year old and he has a chance lol
Hogwarts legacy should've atleast been nominated for:
1) Best music (Good enough for a grammy nomination, but not good enough for GA)
2) Best Art Direction (Hogwarts was phenemonal)
3) RPG ( Starfield with a metacritic rating lower than HL and a much much worse user rating got nominated.)
No nomination clearly highlights the moronic agenda at display.
So...maybe that nomination IS a recipient of the Get Wrecked Transphobe thing. But: Well, I'm on the Actually a Good Person side of the Get Wrecked Transphobe matter.
3. As someone on the actually a good person side of the Hogwarts Legacy debate? The amount of points difference on the highest number of reviews necessary to make it worth the dirty feeling is certainly a bit more than 4 Metacritic points. Lies of P got a flat 80 on the highest number of reviews vs. Hogwarts Legacy's 84 on the highest number of reviews. Now, I would have preferred Octopath Traveler II to either Hogwarts or Lies of P, but honestly...?
GETTTTT! WREEEEEECKED! TRANSPHOOOOOOOOBE!
@@jal.ajeeraShouldn’t have been nominated for best RPG, it wasn’t in the realm of best RPG, Starfield shouldn’t have got a nom either i don’t disagree there. Best Music again nope. All the other nominees were better suited. You citing the grammies means nothing because the grammies historically don’t care or put much thought into the video game noms. Again if you nom Hogwarts you have to kick off another game and it’s just clear that all the games chosen except starfield i will give you that were better choices. Saying it was a political move is silly because i promise you the whole trans debate or whatever you wanna call it is online discourse only any doesn’t mean anything to anyone who isn’t chronically online

Hi Fi? like HL doesn't fit that category, I listened to HL music and it had nothing that struck me as impactful or anything that stood out, and Starfield could have been replaced for HL but HL again is practically a forgotten game that everyone thinks that came out last year
Hi Luke, in the games for impact section, I would definitely reccomend you play chants of Sennaar.
did he play ff16? I know i have a ff16 pfp but its no question ff16 wins music
I don't think he even finish any game. All he does is early hours impresions and review un proces nonesense, and nitpick certain flaws in some games but pass them in others.
He doesnt play games from Japan
Like he said in a AC6 video "im American muh so i play american games" let him hype western open world game no1670 and keep talking how every game is bad or boring
While I didn't necessarily love the game itself, the music was amazing enough to get my vote.
12:20 They really should make a "Skip" button, cause i firmly believe that if you haven't played all the listed games you shouldn't be allowed to vote... It just makes no sense to me saying something is better when you haven't experienced the other thing.... You didn't choose Neil "Astarion" Newbon?! Luke.... are you feeling alright?
On the games for impact list, A Space for the Unbound and Venba are great and crazy emotional.
Deep Rock Galactic has the best community (and community support) and it's never gets nominated
I think we had a lot of good games this year (and also some not so good ones). So even if the games I picked don't win, the games are still great.
I love Idris Elba but he does not deserve best performance just because he's the only "big Hollywood name." My guy couldn't even hold a consistent accent throughout the expansion. It's got to be either Neil or Ben no question
That's the same reason I went with Street Fighter for accessibility :D
bg3 is gonna sweap tga imo
Win Game of the Year? 50/50 chance. Sweep? No.
GOTY: Toss up between it and TOTK.
Game Direction: Tears of the Kingdom. For direction, specifically, I don't think anything's beating the pure technical wizardry of Ultrahand.
Narrative: Baldur's Gate III.
Score and Music: Hi-Fi Rush
Audio Design: Hi-Fi Rush
Performance: Yuri Lowenthal, Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Community Support: Baldur's Gate III
RPG: Baldur's Gate III
(So...3 or 4 wins of 8 nominations. That's...not a sweep.)
@@Volvagia1927you out here acting like your opinions are the facts. A lot of people... get this... don't agree with you.
Community Support: Easy guess
RPG: Easy guess

I can’t give best ongoing game to cyberpunk cuz I don’t think fixing your broken game (as much as I love the game now) and releasing a dlc 3 years later counts as an ongoing game. Then we could say Arkham knight is since they’re releasing that new skin in a month or whatever. And that doesn’t count either
Jusant was snubbed for creative direction and indie game. Definitely a hell of an experience and very beautiful
I completely agree Ben Starr should win best performance - but I disagree with your take on Yuri he had a lot more to work with this game.
Totk was actually the biggest game sold with 4.5 million more copies sold tha Hogwarts legacy
i love baldur gate 3 and happy if get goty! But my game of the year is final fantasy xvi it's a shame that no one pays much attention, it has an absurd soundtrack, amazing storytelling, no soo much bugs ,combat is a bit of a weak point
The combat is great it’s everything else that’s not so great
Tchia was actually a really cute and cool game it was very obviously a AA game but it had a lot of heart and personal touch
My parents (not gamers) were telling me I need to see gran turismo

As someone who hasn't played either, Hogwarts Legacy deserves to be on the list more than Starfield. I can't say for what it should've been nominated for but meh.
Hogwarts Legacy sold a lot but is a mid game and has everything mid. Its good, for a short time, super hyped to be a wizard just to fall flat with a huge empty map, same issue with Starfield.

Idk, different opinions but I thought Alan wake 2 is one of the best games I've played in a while
I love Alan Wake 2. It's the best non-Resident Evil survival horror i've played in a long while.
My pick is Spiderman 2 my first love I wish i could vote for hogwarts legacy as it is also a good game is depressing because it sold the most
Think Hogwarts would've done better if the story was a little more compelling, personally I would've preferred our Main Character to have been an actual actor/actress instead of some nameless student, Also the game is optimized quite poorly, i shouldn't need to install mods to get low CPU temps and low memory consumption.
Saying yuri did a worse job than idris is crazy, and fortnite 100% deserves ongoing
Bungie nomination made me actually giggle and click BG3
I am so mad that a remake took the spot of armored core 6 is should at least be nominated I pray it wins best action game
Best Ongoing: No Man's Sky

I can see Alan Wake 2 being nominated in one or two categories but it feels artificially pushed so hard.
No hogwarts no party
gotta be real here it wasn't nominated for political reasons. i actually love the game because before coming in, i was never in to these types of games where magic and fantasy are involved and this also includes baldurs gate 3, which also suprised me at how good it was when i actually played. for example, i was blown away at how smooth the mechanics are and dodge mechanics are in hogwarts and how really open world the game is. with baldurs, the story line is gripping and the amount of things you can do to change the story is crazy.
If they're gonna nominate remakes than Dead Space is the GOTY
Or Metroid Prime, highest reviewed of the three

It's a SHAME Hogwarts not nominated and I agree with Luke remakes shouldn't be nominated for GOTY in a year full of brand new excellent releases. Don't get me wrong RE4 is a stunning remake, loved it!
I honestly don't think Hogwarts Legacy deserved any nominations, it's pretty mid-tier
Not to mention Atomic Heart. They didn't even get a single nomination. Talk about avoiding politics / sensitive areas.

So lame.

Gran turismo was a great film and surprisingly good
I feel like starfield deserved music related nominees

It blows my mind that a CRPG belonging to and IP that’s more than 25 years old has a real shot at sweeping the Game Awards. It goes to show that a team of dedicated and passionate developers can prioritize player experience over monetization and still make waves and a boatload of profit along the way. It’s such a wonderful middle finger to these massive publishers and developers. I love to see it.
@dirtylefty727
Eh.
