I'm not the biggest Xbox fan. The 360 was my favorite console and Halo big my favorite game on them. But to be honest this is pretty smart. It's like someone finally understood that convenience sells consoles. The only reason I would choose a console over my pc. Is convenience I could sit at home with my family turn on the TV play something easily pause it easily turn it off and continue with my life.🎉
      So easy win for Xbox

@GeorgeNoiseless It's probably because it's a great phrase, but it doesn't really work here. The name "Xbox" loses more of its meaning; however, it's not like everything will cease to be Xbox. Obviously, Xbox will still be its own entity on all the platforms. They have been transitioning (for the last four years) into a more software-selling company rather than just being a hardware-selling company. This makes a lot of sense since they will never beat PlayStation in sales and lose money selling consoles anyway. It's a pretty good transition.

The primary target is the PC market which is a much bigger market to begin with (in 2023 about 4 times as many people played on PC than on PS, XBox and Nintendo combined - only the mobile market is bigger than PC). As for consoles - they don't need to sell their own consoles when they can sell their software (which is the big money making machine btw, not hardware sales) on PS as well. I expect that the next XBox "console" will actually be a lot more akin to a Steamdeck: a portable PC.
Speaking about your firestick - just because you don't want that doesn't mean no one will. It's a nice market anyway.

The current outlook for XBox is bad enough, but my worst fear is that the new XBox handheld won't be a 'separate' device (meaning it won't have it's own games). It'll be a Steam Deck-like device that uses your (next gen XB console) games and it'll be straddled with the same requirements that the Series X/S currently has. It won't be as powerful as the next gen console, but it will REQUIRE developers to make games run on the handheld the same as the console.

Yeah I'm a casual gamer who plays on PC mostly and sometimes on a console. The only reason I bought a PS5 years ago was for the exclusive titles like TLOU, Demon Souls, etc. Sony has a lot of great exclusives for their console, and Microsoft has seemed keen on just burning money acquiring companies that are already on a downward trajectory. Bethesda being the most notable example. The only thing that would have saved their old console strategy would be to make COD exclusive to Xbox. I don't play it, but it seems to have a massive playerbase still. Xbox just doesn't have anything I care about, and even if I did I could technically find it on PC I guess.

The problem there is that Playstation doesn't have that many games, period. When Playstation tries to advertise the PS5, they consistently have to show off multi-platform titles in order to pad their catalogue.
With the good Playstation exclusives coming to PC, there is little reason to want a PS5 specifically. At least the new Xbox store can be accessed on PC and even have many games that allow you to buy once and play on both console and pc.

I think too many people do not understand how businesses work. Being a console builder and trying to market yourself with your console and games. Exclusive to that console is not long. Term profitable, it worked for a while, but now that hardware requirements are higher. The cost of producing the console is higher console was known as being inexpensive and now you've got consoles that have to go for 5 to $600 or more and it starts to price itself out of the market. It was intended for so Xbox is being smart by getting out of that and instead. Just selling the software, then they don't need to worry about also selling you the hardware Consoles in general are just kind of on the way out. Unless people that play on consoles are willing to accept less to maintain the price. Because now, with all these new games having these high requirements, you were going to start needing hardware like gaming pcs to run them and those things are not cheap. They never have been so a console. Being $500 or less is not going to be sustainable for much longer going forward unless it's Nintendo.

Isn't it crazy how they have misunderstood their own strategy... the whole point of buying up all those studios for billions was to make loads of great games and make the xbox console the place to be, it was a long term strategy, those studios had to be given time to create the new games that would make xbox the number 1, but instead they have decided to not give them the time and only think short term. It was a long term strategy that's been thrown of course by short term greed. Xbox could of been on top in maybe 3 years but they've royally screwed that now with this whole strategy.

You can't cut off the creative head of a studio and expect his/her workers to take up that slack. They got their money. MS just wanted their IPs to prevent them being on Sony's consoles. Look at Rare. Look at all the studios that MS has shut down, because they can't produce anything.

I still think it's a mistake that they started putting their games on PS. Was it really worth it to put Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thiefs on PS and undermine the trust of the playerbase? What did the trillion dollars company get from it?
Yes, their library is weaker now, but it was getting its momentum. In the next month alone there'll be STALKER 2 and Indiana Jones. Gamepass is also getting its momentum with the addition of COD, even I got it for my PC this year. Like, sure, you can have your games on PC, phone, Firestick, whatever, good idea, but I really see no point in putting them on PS all while PS is activelly working against you by buying out "console exclusive rights" for lots of new games. PS IS NOT gonna allow you to put Gamepass on their platform, just stop this madness.

However since 2020, I've felt Xbox has done nothing but please me with a lot of their old franchises. Halo was a fine game at launch. Failed updates however right now it's fine and receiving updates every month. Gears of war E Day had me hyped out of my mind. That looked crazy good. The new fable has me iffy however I'll still try it since I liked the old ones. It had moments where it looked good at times. So I'm just curious like what games is it you'd like to see them make that you think would entice fleets of people to come back?

My only guess for why they are doing all of these announcements and marketing and interviews is to dominate the gaming news heading into the holiday. They showed more of Indy heading into its release and into the holidays, announced a handheld to produce hype around the brand, followed by a deep dove into an upcoming title in South of Midnight, and also reaffirmed their brand attachment to WOW with the 30th anniversary show, then did more interviews about exclusives followed by the new "this is an Xbox" marketing while the iron was hot, and then announced Avowed's preorder plus it being on Battle net. All week this week everyone at work or im my friend group has been talking about Xbox this week, even the people who dont own an xbox. I am not sure how the technical aspect works, but for example, Skyrim on Xbox allow mods that are more complex than the PlayStation, the modding capabilities that PlayStation offers are extremely rudimentary, I think this is a strength.

I feel people are missing the forest through the tress on this one. Standard home stay consoles are costing too much money to make and produce, with not enough money being seen back or at least not as fast as said company would like. Everyone points to Nintendo as the golden example, and the problem with that is it doesnt really work for said comparison. The switch isnt your typical home entertainment console, it is a portable handheld console that can be displayed on a TV, but it's not the same as the nintendo consoles that came before. Eventually as with other forms of physical media, consoles and games are going to meet that curve. Microsoft is acknowledging the fact that there is limited reason to buy an Xbox, they arent deluding themselves. And the counter is often "just make more games for the console", but the problem is that said curve is still going to be met eventually. That solution is just kicking a can down a road and is still wasting money by gambling on the console itself and the games limited option for purchase. There is a reason why the majority of people use netflix, hulu, YT tv, and or amazon instead of a cable box. The standard age of consoles and console wars is nearing it's end.
Nintendo is out of the game as they arent making standard home consoles anymore, but portable handhelds. We're seeing Microsoft is getting out of the game by having a foot hold in multiple studios and with the use of their subscription service model. The only one left making the typical console is Sony.

Devices that people don't play games on. This isn't some genius push in to the future. It's them going the way of Sega. A failed console company that has to become a 3rd party publisher.

Xbox is following in the footsteps of Sega, and their fanboys have nobody to blame for it but themselves.
When you don't buy games, thereby not supporting the devs, because you've been conditioned to expect everything in your glorified rental service; and championing massive acquisitions instead of making games, this was always going to be the result.
The future of Xbox is not on Xbox, ironically.
