It was the first worldwide Empire after Spain and Portugal divided the world in two around 1500. Other than sparsely populated Canada and Australia they controlled India and parts of Africa. The Empire started to Teeter before World War I then accelerated during World War II
The UK Foreign Office wants to be "loved" by other countries and the UN, no awkward disputes to disrupt its smooth functioning. If it had its way, the next few years would see the UK giving: The Chagos Islands to Mauritius Gibraltar to Spain The Falkland Islands to Argentina Northern Ireland to Eire The Orkney Islands to Norway The Channel Islands to France The British Sovereign Base Areas to Cyprus British Antarctica to Russia Independence to Scotland - albeit as a vassal EU state run from Brussels I expect that if Denmark asked for the Isle of Man back (both were once part of the Viking kingdom of King Canute), it would probably get it. Indeed, if China "discovered" a long lost map that with a dash line that "proved" that it had sovereignty of the Isle of Wright in 1421, the island would be probably be handed over without any argument.
America, Middle East, most of Africa, Caribbean, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, were all Colonies 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Short and sweet.
As an English-Canadian, it breaks my heart that our Empire is gone.
Good ruddance snd goodbye to the foul faced stagnant nonsense.
don't worry, your former colonial subjects will colonize you
