If Metallica sold out for moving towards more traditional metal, then by that logic, Megadeth sold out for doing more hard rock in the 90s, Anthrax sold out for doing a mash up with Public Enemy, and Slayer sold out when they made a nu metal-esque album. These bands didn't sell out, they simply dabbled in different musical styles.
Megadeth even slowed down their sound right after they saw how successful the black album was. Don't get me wrong, I love Countdown To Extinction, but if anyone sold out it was them.
Actually, there is this live performance of Frantic where Kirk adds a small little solo! Look up "Frantic Metallica Live Phoenix 2008", I'm sure you'll find it.
Nice! I always thought the key to this album would be just turn up the guitars (some nice riffing) turn down the drums a bit...both of which you've done! Touch some up of the awkward parts and even add a solo, I must say this is well done
They always played what theyb wanted to hear, and that's why they had their modern sound. They never aimed to be mainstream. And tbh, I love this damn album.
i dont hate st anger. i think its pretty mediocre yeah but i love this song in particular. the whole album has that "we were so totally wasted when we made this" feel to it which rules.
First things first massive fan since i can remember! And i actually like this album and well its an album metallica had to release so its pretty much for them so please dont hate this !
Thank god someone agree'd! People go on about how "St. Anger sucked" why do they listen to it then! Music is expression? This is an angry album, and there was 'alot' of anger going on at this point so guys do the simple thing, if you don't like a certian song, album, artist or type of genre, dont listen to it!
@KeARtLMoPAJFA Sir or madam, you have earned my respect. People, PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PERSON! He/she has told the damn truth you elitists didn't want to hear.
how can they be "selling out". only a few people really like this album. i don't hear it on radio. i didn't hear on radio. metal fans don't like. mainstream fans don't like it. and seriously get over yourselves they don't make music for you. they play it live for you. they make it for themselves because they enjoy it. so back to my main point, its really an inbetweener, they weren't aiming for a specific group of people. it was there musical, emotional release
my brother, who is a metallica fan...sometimes, makes me angry because he's like many other metallica fans: he compares all of metallica's other works to MOP and he hates St. Anger (even though, according to him, the first metallica song he ever heard that got him liking the band was "St. Anger" from the album St. Anger.)
Really? I knew James Hetfield was going into therapy and resolving things with Dave Mustaine, but I thought he was rational during the other times in studio.
There's a difference between experimentation and selling out. Selling out is if a band decides "hey, this is popular so let's do that" Experimentation is where a band goes "hey, what if we try this?" Therefore, we can say load and reload weren't sellout albums. But was st anger? Sort of. So, yes, this was released in the middle of a nu metal obsession, and so metallica making a nu metal album should be selling out. However, they could have said, "OK, let's try and make a nu metal album and see if it works." Overall, I think that since James was in rehab and Lars was doing cocaine, they were lacking ideas and decided to just do what everyone else was doing. As a result of this, we can conclude St anger to be a sellout album. TLDR: St anger is a sellout, load and reload are not.
He's only breaking copyright laws if he claimed that the changes were made by Metallica and/or if he charged money for it. Look around, you'll find a ton of unofficial Metallica remixes/remasters.
I totally understand you. It maks me so mad when fans immediatly bad-mouth new albums. But what really gets me upset is when fans always...I mean ALWAYS compare everything by Metallica to Master of Puppets, and if it's not as good, it automatically sucks. They didn't even give Death Magnetic a chance. Downgraded. Go to iTunes store, look up Death Magnetic's reviews and look at all the 1 star ratings it's gotten. A lot of those reviews are titled "Master of Puppets."
I actually think the solo isn't half bad. I would have done things a little different personally. Very solid though :) (and yes I do play instruments not saying I am better, just not what I personally would have done.)
@KiwiLovin7 ...I can understand that sentiment with Load and ReLoad, but St. Anger? I can't see the audience they were aiming for with this album, as it's very raw and hard to get into, really.
That's kinda nitpicky, there were a few production issues: 1. the snare (most easily noticeable) 2. the lack of audible bass (a problem all their good bassists were screwed by nearly) 3. guitar tone sounded a bit staticky and 4. the good backing vocals parts were mixed out of the CD. I only know they were there at all through the in studio rehearsal. However, once the production issues are fixed the raw emotional power of this album will be truly audible.
what's with people and hating new metallica? i say both the original and this mix sound good, but people who call themselves metallica fans and yet hate St. Anger and Death Magnetic are hypocrites. a fan means you're with your band through and through.
man is that a question .. this album has the most ass kickin riffs.. maybe there is no solos but .. WTF thats not a big deal!!.. i personaly love this album it's just makin me bang head!!
and why not? the rest of the album is so "angry" (hence the name St. Anger) there needs to be some "soothing light at the end of your tunnel" that's not "a freight-train comin' your way"
I like it, but i would keep the riff going with the solo over it, instead of the solo played over the song. And i would cut from 4'39 to 5'15,that would be cool, try it moving the video scroll!!!
St. Anger was made to have a raw, unpolished sound (and thats one of the reasons no one likes it), so it makes sense that the solo might be a little off.
(i'm sorry, im from argentina, i dont speak english)
that solo actually some good relations to a Kirk solo..man if he just heard this and made it better in his own way sumhow before they made ST ANger album, that would kick major asssss
the whole point to this album was to sound unproduced and garage-like . . . . not over produced with eleventeen guitar tracks layed over top of eachother
If Metallica sold out for moving towards more traditional metal, then by that logic, Megadeth sold out for doing more hard rock in the 90s, Anthrax sold out for doing a mash up with Public Enemy, and Slayer sold out when they made a nu metal-esque album. Megadeth even slowed down their sound right after they saw how successful the black album was. Don't get me wrong, I love Countdown To Extinction, but if anyone sold out it was them.
I always thought DIM had more of a groove metal (Machine Head-esque) sound than straight up nu metal.
Holy shit!
Those new riffs...
And the solo...
Whoever did this is a God.
I've always been proud to say I like St. Anger.
Actually, there is this live performance of Frantic where Kirk adds a small little solo! Look up "Frantic Metallica Live Phoenix 2008", I'm sure you'll find it.
of the seven remixes, the drum sound on this one sounds the closest to an actual snare. again, nicely done.
Nice! I always thought the key to this album would be just turn up the guitars (some nice riffing) turn down the drums a bit...both of which you've done! Touch some up of the awkward parts and even add a solo, I must say this is well done
love it when James says 'On and On' for the first time.
Great harmony on it, unlike 'Purifyyyyyyyyy' lol
These remixes are fucking great, much better sound and there're more details.
BEST EDIT EVER! congrats man!
They always played what theyb wanted to hear, and that's why they had their modern sound. They never aimed to be mainstream. And tbh, I love this damn album.
I like the solo so much, but I think the scale didn't match.
It gave me an idea for a solo!
@MetallicGod07 It's a good album with the exception of Kirk being non-existent. Death Mag is great bec Kirk is back, St Anger was a James record
Oh god that riff sounds so fucking sick with that little underling bit of distortion underneath it. Good shit
Why are people complaining about the solo?
1. It's fine
2. wtf why are you complaining it has a fucking solo now!
REMASTERED!..i hope one day metallica remaster it completely!!a dreamy day that would be^^
What a crazy solo... Brilliant !!
this is incredible, but i thought the palm-muted guitar in the "Keep on Searching" was unneeded. Solo is soo awesome!
you made this song double in quality,....and i love it alredy
much more listenable!
good job
I love this remix and the solo is insane
but I still hate that tick tick tock part of the song
but that's the bands fault
This RULEZ! much better than the original :D
At 4:33, overdub of guitar gave me flash backs (I heard trails) - great job!!!
nice work
dont know what these people r talking about, the solos badass and kinda goes with the song!!!!!!!!
i dont hate st anger. i think its pretty mediocre yeah but i love this song in particular. the whole album has that "we were so totally wasted when we made this" feel to it which rules.
@cyrusjthompson FINALLY!!! Someone who can use some thinking power to figure out why this is awesome
where can i find a higher quality version of this??
I saw a flipnote on this a while ago, it was my favorite flipnote, it had this song but, it was way different and i've been on a quest to find it ;-;
I know this comment is old, but... Me too! I can't seem to find the version in the Flipnote anywhere. D:
ikr DD:
This was posted a while ago
I found it! It's called
'jokes don't die so easy'
:D
+Sockie Mockie I SAW THAT FLIPNOTE it had wolves on it...
I found the song! It`s called Jokes don´t die so easy, in case you were still looking for it :))
the solo is great in my opinion, it actually makes the song better
love the solo man
I think St. Anger is great. I love to listen to it when I'm pissed off lol.
wow that solo they should hire you.. you should send them this demo
its really made this song better
This is awesome!
First things first massive fan since i can remember! And i actually like this album and well its an album metallica had to release so its pretty much for them so please dont hate this !
frantic with solo yeaahhh!!!! good job!!
that solo was epic fo real... i think thats how the song should be played...
This is NOT Metallica edit, but in fact, Metallica added some solos to the St.Anger songs on some of their shows.
they told him that solos wouldn't fit to the the album...kirk thought about it and accepted it...
that solo is fucking sick came out of no where. I love it.
That solo sounds... off. it's a neat idea, but it sounds.... off.
Thank god someone agree'd!
People go on about how "St. Anger sucked" why do they listen to it then! Music is expression? This is an angry album, and there was 'alot' of anger going on at this point so guys do the simple thing, if you don't like a certian song, album, artist or type of genre, dont listen to it!
the solo surprized me.
Part of the restraint of St Anger's brillaince is the lack of solos. Makes it so much heavier without them.
this is proof that st. anger could have been better :)
Wow not bad at all!
I love that powerful bass guitar!
Pretty nice solo. I like it.
I have to get these remixes somehow.
No, Bob Rock (The producer at the time) did after Jason's departure.
@james30721 cheers man! :) its good to see someone with common sense
@KeARtLMoPAJFA Sir or madam, you have earned my respect. People, PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PERSON! He/she has told the damn truth you elitists didn't want to hear.
i really like that solo

Where's the solo from?
This is how this song should be.
love the solos

Really? I knew James Hetfield was going into therapy and resolving things with Dave Mustaine, but I thought he was rational during the other times in studio.
impressive solo
this songs a million times better with a solo!
yeah man look at his channel, bunch of them are on there
@VideoMask93
They are producing music that appeals to a broader audience. That is selling out.
There's a difference between experimentation and selling out.
Selling out is if a band decides "hey, this is popular so let's do that"
Experimentation is where a band goes "hey, what if we try this?"

LOVE THE SOLO. SERIOUSLY. NOT THE BEST OF COURSE, BUT, IT'S REALLY KIRK-LIKE. LOVIN' IT.
I actually think the solo isn't half bad. I would have done things a little different personally. Very solid though :) (and yes I do play instruments not saying I am better, just not what I personally would have done.)
wow it has a cool solo, just what the original song was missing
Great!!
@KiwiLovin7 ...I can understand that sentiment with Load and ReLoad, but St. Anger? I can't see the audience they were aiming for with this album, as it's very raw and hard to get into, really.
James was in rehab and Lars was still doing cocaine. I don't think we can hold them accountable for any shitty decisions on St Anger.
EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's kinda nitpicky, there were a few production issues: 1. the snare (most easily noticeable) 2. the lack of audible bass (a problem all their good bassists were screwed by nearly) 3. guitar tone sounded a bit staticky and 4. the good backing vocals parts were mixed out of the CD. man is that a question .. this album has the most ass kickin riffs.. maybe there is no solos but .. WTF thats not a big deal!!..
i personaly love this album it's just makin me bang head!!
@VideoMask93
True, from The Black Album onward up to St. Anger it was easy-listening metal compared to their earlier stuff.
The solo is terrible, but his remixes are overall quite good.
The truth that in general the songs gave them quite wave remains st. Anger but with a little more wave gets to hear the disc well.
dude i want the CD
I loves it
I like this better than the original.
Try playing the solo at the tuning metallica was using for that album it fit better.
and why not? the rest of the album is so "angry" (hence the name St. Anger) there needs to be some "soothing light at the end of your tunnel" that's not "a freight-train comin' your way"
And just like that... you've fixed the song.
I like it, but i would keep the riff going with the solo over it, instead of the solo played over the song. And i would cut from 4'39 to 5'15,that would be cool, try it moving the video scroll!!!
I liked the solo... 5 stars.
The solo has good potential, perhaps needs to be played on higher notes at some points, or even more distortion.
@GHLegendMetalix
Well it is lol I actually like the snare sound (I know I know) just it was WAY to loud in the album
I love that makes me laugh at how cool he does it
pretty cool
@KiwiLovin7 If metal can be called "easy-listening", hahaha. It was still pretty metal, just not thrash metal, which was what people expected.
St. Anger was made to have a raw, unpolished sound (and thats one of the reasons no one likes it), so it makes sense that the solo might be a little off.
(i'm sorry, im from argentina, i dont speak english)
La verdad el álbum hubiera mejorado considerablemente, sobretodo si corrigen la batería
want the tabs for this solo!
that solo actually some good relations to a Kirk solo..man if he just heard this and made it better in his own way sumhow before they made ST ANger album, that would kick major asssss
I like the St. Anger album as it is. I don't even really like the Re-Release with the solos in it that much.
St anger was brilliant there just wasnt enough quality like frantic in it, too much wasted material.
i like the remix by the way =] nice changes
this song is phat!!!!!!
Not sure the solo fits. If it was lower it might, but as it stands....Honestly not sure. Good placement though.
the whole point to this album was to sound unproduced and garage-like . . . . not over produced with eleventeen guitar tracks layed over top of eachother
