Ive played lead guitar in rock bands for 35 years and when talking shop with most guys and mention Dee they kinda look at me funny. To my ears Dee knew what the song needed. He knew when to run the vocal melody line(which he did alot), and knew when to ride on top of the beat. He wasnt just following the guitar riff, he was playing a song in the song. Ive heard younger musicians call it "old school " Whatever. It doesent get any better than this. Thanks for the vid

You nailed it. I'm a guitar player too, but until I started playing bass I never knew why Dee's parts seemed so brilliant...I think it was because he was often keying off the vocal melody. I never realized he used a pick on this one, maybe that's how he got that clicky sound.

Agree. I'm a drummer and the raunch and expertise of Dee's line here makes me listen to it regularly. I didn't know of him when I was a kid player. Glad I do today. Superb player.

This is the song. I was 5 yrs old the first time I heard it, and I remember how powerful and slightly terrifying it was to me, but the thing I always remembered the most about it (besides the incredible keyboard intro, which is the best keyboard intro of all time IMHO) is the BASS LINE. This was the song that me fall in love with the bass, even though at the time I had no idea what a bass guitar was. All I knew is it moved thru me like my own blood, and I was transfixed, and still am. Thanks for an excellent cover of this seminal masterpiece.

I've been listening to Elton since 1972. I've seen him live 109 times. I always heard how Dee was under rated as a bass player. As a piano player I never heard the complexity of notes being played on the bass. You've really opened my eyes to what a bass player is adding to the music. I'm also a huge Rush fan. Geddy's playing was the only one that was obvious to me. Thanks for your videos... they're awesome.
P.s. More Elton covers if/when you have the time. I'm sure there are a few more gems with Dee playing on them. Thanks.

Dee Murray was one of the best in his craft, underrated and lost way too young. He had a unique style that gave Elton John's early music its iconic sound. This is most people did not know it was Murray who gave the music that sound. A prime example is "Ballad of Danny Bailey" Listen to the bass line which is amazing, a whole song within the song.
You did a great job of reproducing not only Dee's lines in this video but SOUND as well. Dee used both a Precision and Jazz bass (not sure what gear he used on GBYBR album)

When you're a bass player and really feeling rhythm, it's a whole head space that for me is both relaxing and mania-inducing... it's pretty weird, really. It's probably a certain state of meditation that certain "Eastern" philosophies have written about for a few thousand years. Actually, I think the aggressive feelings i get come from being bipolar, and having the aggressive music I play (even if it's Billy Joel , a lot of that's pretty angsty stuff .. actually most of his music is, hah ) Anyway, once in that head space, you can pretty much move your focus to something else for a certain amount of time, before losing the rhythm and needing to get back into it. It's proportional to how long you've been playing the song, or songs you've been working on at that time.. at least for me it is. (things that help me personally get into that mindset are actually playing to Rocksmith as a source of bass tab, believe it or not because it visually cues me on timing then I kinda just run with it) Just thought I'd share that. It's super important, if you want to cut it as a bassist, to be able to play around the drummer, instead of just on top of the drummer. The more I learn the more I find what I often thing are broken-up sections of bass playing are longer sustained notes, and what I think sound on the records like longer notes are just really short ones behind and/or in front of the kick (or snare, etc) with reverb making them sound longer.. and the drums tuned properly makes the sound of the bass carry itself even further. Wow I'm ranting. OK, good comment mate. Enjoy this cover myself a lot.

My favorite track from my favorite Elton John album. I loved watching you play this. So smooth yet so aggressive. Well done.
I remember the first time I heard this song. My oldest brother had this bad ass stereo (for anyone old enough, you know what I mean when it comes to the mid-70's). He cranked it up and I fell in love with this song.
I bought this album on 8-track back in the day. Lost it somewhere along the way and repurchased it on cassette. Had that stolen (along with my stereo) and have since repurchased it on CD.
There are a number of other songs from this album that I'd love to hear you do. Social Disease and Dirty Little Girl to name a couple.

So, our keyboard player was squawking about the guitar-centric covers we'd chosen lately so I threw the gauntlet and suggested this gem remembering full well I had an ace in the hole as a backup (Troy's cover) if our keyboard player took the challenge. Our guitar player piled on, the drummer shrugged and guess what? Keys couldn't say "no." So here I go - once more into the breach. Without having tried it yet, the song looks FUN to play. :)
We also recently covered James Taylor's "Your Smiling Face" which I saw you once covered and must have lost a copyright charge challenge because the link is dead. Pity. I sang lead on that one and played that great line by Leland Sklar. THAT was fun to play.
Thanks as always not only for the covers, but for the back stories as well.

Haven't tried Funeral yet. However, in the same show we opened with Your Smiling Face and closed with War Pigs. There was an eclectic crowd that largely appreciated our sense of humor - especially in the diversity of song choices... we did those two, a Steely Dan tune (Don't Take Me Alive) the Romantic's What I Like about You, etc. Trying to get Is She Really Going Out with Him into rotation.
Thanks as always not only for the covers but also for the back stories.
