- In memory of Kurt Edelhagen, one of the most significant orchestra leaders in the field of dance music, Schlager and jazz in Germany in the 1950s and 1960s.The title "China Town" by the U.S. American composer Jean Schwartz in an arrangement by Francy Boland was part of the classic repertoire of the Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra, which can also be described as the forerunner of today's WDR BIG BAND. Special features include the trombone, trumpet and saxophone sections alternating with Hans Dekker on drums. Recorded at the WDR Studio Bocklemünd / Cologne (October 2020).

Is this arrangement available for purchase online? I'm a trombone player and that soli section was KILLER.
Hi Cam! François "Francy" Boland, a Belgian pianist and arranger, arranged the piece by J. Schwartz. He passed away in 2005. We do not have the rights to sell the arrangement. You'll have to contact the publisher.
.
@@WDRBIGBANDThank you for the quick response! Sad to hear about his passing. His music is phenomenal. What publishing company should I contact?

Great playing. Who is this German drummer? Great feel and sound, can you tell me what type of cymbals he’s using?
Thanks again.
Hi Philip! Hans wrote about his Cymbal Setup:
I have several cymbals/setups that I use:
Always a HiHat combo with 14' Paiste Soundedge 602 bottom and an Istanbul Agop ,not too thick 14' top or halt a Soundedge also from the 602 series of Paiste. For the HiHat is the Soundedge Bottom the secret tip . Above I was looking for the Istanbul replacement , but can be anything that is not too thick and heavy and sounds good.
For the Jazz Big Band productions mostly a 18' K Zildjian Ride from the 70's or a Bosphorus 19' Jazz Ride from the very first series from the 90's. These are always on my left side.
On the right side I have a 20' K Zildjian Ride with 2 rivets from the 70's same series as the 18'. Alternatively I also have 2 different A- Zildjians year I do not know exactly I think 50s , also both with rivets .
Otherwise I have a Wuhan China with rivets , 22'.
For more crisp productions(Latin,Pop,Funk etc.) I have a Pre aged K 20' from the 90's on the right side as a ride without rivets and also
Various Crashes(Istanbul,Anatolian,Zildjian,Sabian 16-17 or 18').
I also have a 20' Istanbul Flatride.
I must say that cymbals especially the ones I have chosen are all relatively hard to find, most have come to me through the years on the way, except the crashes of course.......
What I always look for in the rides is that they also crash well (so they are pretty lively and not too thick and heavy).
Especially in "China Town" I used my old K Zdjuans, Wuhan, the Istanbul Crash and his HiHats.
Hi Hans,
Thank you for getting back to me. You’re a very musical player. I also have a number of old K cymbals from the 1960’s and 50’s.
I also have some old A Zildjians from the 1960’s and then Sabians , recently I have falling in love with the different models from Istanbul Agop. The 30th Anniversary the Signature models, the Xist models which are very different especially their flat rides and other models.
Thanks again for getting back to me . Greetings from New York.
Hi Philip! 👍
@@WDRBIGBAND Thanks a lot! So besides the 22" Wuhan there's no other 22" Ride in Hans' setup?
The German Drummer is a Dutch one! ;-). Hans Dekker.
Stunning (although it didn’t feature any guitar!)
Hi Paul! It was a mistake, which is repaired:)
🎶🎨👏👏👏❤
Does anyone know where I can purchase this arrangement?
That's difficult to say - you'll have to contact the inheritors of Francy Boland.
Is there sheet music out for this piece?
Sorry, we are not allowed to give out sheet music. The arrangement was made by the late Francy Boland, so you will have to contact the publisher yourself.
