  • GM dropped a bomb on the Full-size truck market by dropping a 2.7 Liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine in 2019 Silverado LT and RST trims. This is my review on the engine and I have to say. It's not what I expected. A 4 cylinder Silverado may be in your future.

      @@craigholcombe1901 I just bought a new 2022 Silverado 1500 Custom 2.7 in January and I got to use the mother in-laws GM discount and paid $ 34k for it and the sticker was not quite $ 42k and it runs like a champ with plenty of power and I compare it with the 2014 F 150 I had that had the 3.5 Ecoboost 6 banger in it, even though the Ford had 50 more HP. Of course it is to early to tell how long the motors will last, but the 2.7 does not struggle at all, in fact it does not even work hard pushing the truck down the road without a load. I have had cars with undersized motors in the past, and this is not one of them and I think people automatically think more pistons means more power and that is not the case.

The first two are good options for longevity...the last one is not. I don't care what Chevy says...adding a turbo is a terrible idea in a truck that's expected to actually "work". I can't wait to see some of these trucks once they hit the 120k mark or so. Whereas I've had 5.3's last 250+k I highly doubt you'll see the same thing from these little turbos. Well that just goes to show you what Chevy people know. Anyways. This 4.3 has no power till you really get into the gas. And they front load the peddle so even with a light foot it will get up in the 5000 RPM range. It drops down to V4 mode but that is only going downhill and with out touching the gas. So with my best attempts to get the best MPG I have gotten 20mpg. My take on this. The 4cly turbo would be great for the guy that only need to carry people and get ok gas milage. The other side to that is. You are basically getting the same gas mileage between the 5.3l EcoTec V8 and this 2.7l I4 turbo, but the 2.7l is a smaller engine. Using Japan's displacement tax, you'll pay 51,000 yen per year ($465 USD) on the 2.7l turbo and 88000 yen ($803 USD) on the 5.3l. Now I'm sure the Japanese isn't rushing out to buy the 2.7l turbo Silverado, due to their tiny roads, but I just used their displacement tax as an example.

      The LS V8 Chevy Corvette engine gets close to 30 mpg. It has very little friction because of it's 2 valve per cylinder and simple design with roller lifters etc. The ECU tune and the compression ratio and the transmission make all the difference, a V8 can get nearly as good of gas mileage if you set it up right and use a super high overdrive.

    The thing is people, small factory equipped turbocharged engines are nothing new. Euro cars have done this since the 80s. I've owned a few.... while fun to drive and very powerful. Long term reliability has never been proven. Ford has tried it, now GM. C-mon guys, while AWESOME power numbers are actually quite easy to engineer into an engine, longevity is not. Gasoline turbocharged engines cook oil and dont get great mileage when always in boost. It's well documented and proven. Those same Euro engines last 300,000 miles in N/A forms, so dont go there.
    This is all mandated by EPA/Gov't/CARB regs. That's why we are now seeing a decline in reliability and high oil consumption etc. The best years were about 1985-2005 in automotive engineering.

    Turbos will last if you treat them right. Always use full synthetic oils and change it regularly. Before turning off the engine, let it idle for 1 to 2 minutes so the turbo can properly cool down. When starting the engine, let the oil reach 180 degrees Fahrenheit before pushing the engine and turbo during hard accelerations. It also helps the life of the turbo to not lug the engine in overdrive.

    • @TheGenerationX894
      @TheGenerationX894 2 года назад

    You were reading the rpm gauge wrong Mr. Professional. It was idling at 6-700.

      Each hash mark was 100rpm where do you get 6-700 from line 2

      @@johnwaynebrooks you don't understood math do you... If the tach says X1000 and there is a 1 that is 1000rpm now if there is 9 hash marks each mark is 100 so if the needle is on mark 3 that makes 3 divided by 1000 for 300 rpm... Thank you for either proving you are stupid or have a thick skull and cant admit you are wrong... Tachs have been this way for almost 100 years so move on moron
