This is my new favorite channel in a very long time! I get all of the information I’m looking for in a down to earth manner and the detail they provide is second to none! The fact that TK is a result of a dad and his kids sharing their passion of almost all things with an engine with the world brings back memories of my dad, brother and I doing the same thing. I just wish I could say we were still doing that… Cancer, what can ya do? Anyhow, keep up the awesome content guys! Y’all are the real deal!
Looks great in the 2 row. The misses has a 2021 wk2 high altitude, we really like it so far. Nice to know she has a vehicle that I don't need to push and dig out of the driveway with a snow storm. Stellantis has done a fine job with the new design, would take this any day over a Highlander.
Grand Cherokees are great vehicles. I feel like they're just the perfect size. Decent trail ability, good towing, good cargo capacity inside, drive smooth, just a true swiss army knife. Still driving my 97 Laredo ZJ.
I've had 2 ZJ's, a 96 Limited and a 98 SE. My 96 was bulletproof...my 98 I have no idea what happened, but that thing had transmission issues, electrical issues, and a horrible engine knock that wasn't the normal 4L I6 valve train noise this was low end....originally it would go away after a bit, but it got to the point where it was noticeable all the time. After the front transmission pump seal failed, that pretty much ended that...my 96 ZJ I took offroad all the time, it was covered in mud more than it was clean...it would go anywhere I pointed it, and it didn't have lockers, just the quadra-trac 4WD system. My 98 ZJ had Selec-Trac (one reason I bought it), I found out later on that it also had the rear factory limited slip as well. If it weren't for all the issues I was having with it, I'd still have it, way too many problems to throw money at. Did a lot of offroading and a lot of towing with my 96 ZJ, it did everything I asked it to do, and it also made several trips to California and back home to Idaho...it was a great go to the mountains rig, and take it on an out of state trip vehicle...never had any worries with it.
Until you need the cylinder head replaced at 50,000 miles and you are out of warranty. The intake needs to be removed to change the spark plugs as well. It all only cost 4,500. FCA S@-T.
New to Jeeps and the 3.6 (Gladiator), like hearing you guys explain and go through the technical / off road stuff in a down to earth manner - lots of people on RUclips need to chill out. Keep em coming.
Great vid! I owned 1995 and 2001 Grand Cherokees, then moved on to Wranglers. I own a full-equipped 2018 Sahara with Selec-Trac; I love that Jeep. But with the stupidly insane prices of new Wranglers, it might be time to give Grand Cherokee a look once again.
Off road cruze control is great for the long forest service roads. Say 10 plus miles. At 15 mph. Set it and you get to enjoy the sights. Perfect for the Sunday afternoon drive.
I was really disappointed when building a new 2022 GC Laredo online when I could not add the 2 speed transfer case. It would be nice if they kept the classic around a few more years with the 2 speed transfer, or add it to the new ones. I am no off-road expert, but I know how nice low range is going up really steep hills off pavement. And how many of us really want to take a $70,000 vehicle off-road. Seems more logical to put the off-road equipment on the less expensive models.
I am a Wrangler guy but if you want an SUV that is 90% a family hauler (soccer mom - not used pejoratively) and 10% a hardcore (OK medium core) trail-basher, you can't go wrong with GC. 11 inch clearance, locker, and now sway bar disconnect, not to mention Jeep's 4WD system, you are beating a Range Rover in its own game...
I didn't like the new Grand Cherokee at first. I think it was because they first showed the 3 row "L". I thought it just looked fat and ugly, like most new SUVs. The rear end is flat like a bus. But now that I've seen the 2 row, it's grown on me. The rear end and overall shape is just so much nicer. Especially the Trailhawk. The off road bits on the Trailhawk make it a lot more fun and playful. I'd only consider the 2 row to be honest.
I don’t get why they can’t make a sway bar disconnect that actually functions properly on any of there models. Ford for example, has a sway bar disconnect on the bronco that works as soon as you hit the button, hell it even disconnects while under load! It just seems weird to me. Stellantis has the Power Wagon, Jeep Rubicon, and now this and they still haven’t figured it out?
that would involve R&D dollars to be spent. Jeep as a brand has enough of a market and fanboyism who are completely fine with the maker churning out tepid awfulness. the mustang suffered the same issue with the solid rear axle, ford openly admitted they saved $500/unit and justified that their buyers 'liked it'. that's now been fixed. my neighbor loves his 2018 wrangler rubicon and he's constantly 'tinkering' fixing things (like diff gears that seemed to be made out of the softest metal on earth) and he justifies it as being a 'part of owning a jeep'... i call it something different, 'part of owning a PoS', but that's just me. my brother in-law just bought a new wrangler, he asked me what i thought of it compared to a 4-Runner (they don't off-road at all) prior to buying, i gave him my opinion. his wife liked the way the jeep looked, so they ended up with the jeep (girls LOVE jeeps). it's most challenging obstacle will be a speed bump. he's already frustrated with how it handles on the highway, but hey, it looks cool.
Owner of a 2012 JGC. Nice update but feel that the engine choices are still the same except for the upcoming 4XE. Hope the repaired the ventilation swing door and fan issues. Holding out for a full BEV JJGC to justify change.
They had solid axles front and rear, making them the best mid-size offroaders out there....well the Grand Cherokee from 1993 through 2004 had front and rear solid axles...but when the Grand Cherokee first came out it was more of a luxury type base, but people loved them and as they aged they became the step up in size from the XJ Cherokees for offroading. The ZJ's and WJ's were great for offroading because they had so many options for aftermarket stuff to build them into whatever you wanted to do whether it be hard core crawling, or overlanding, or even both. Not sure I'd want a Grand Cherokee, or any Jeep for that matter after 2004. The Grand Cherokee from 1999 to 2004 you could actually get with one of the best offroad capable 4WD systems....Quadra-Drive. Not only did you get full time 4WD, but you also got front and rear visco-locking differentials...after 2004 you could only get a rear locker in the Quadra-Drive equipped models.
Maybe you can answer this, does the trailer hitch and tow package come standard for 2022? I cant find it as an option on Jeep’s website when you go to build and price one. (On any trim)
@@tylerdm1842 right and that’s what I thought, but when you go on the site to price one out that’s not even an option on any trim level. Also if you build and price a 2021 GC-L now, that towing package is $695 now instead of a $995. It’s all kind of confusing
Looks nice my sister just bought a 2021 a couple weeks ago and looks very nice. But this one has a nicer interior and bigger camera. But I like the exterior look a bit more.
Love that the Cherokee stands apart from the rest of the CUV world where every CUV looks alike. Jeep continued the JK production of the Wrangler along with the JL.
Which one is better off road? GC4 or GC5? I just wish the V8 was available in all trim levels. They'd sell a butt-ton of Laredo's if the Hemi was available. But the cheapest is close to $58k in the Trailhawk. A mid-size, utility SUV shouldn't always cost more than a Full-sized truck. Can we let the Grand Wagoneer take Jeep luxury to the stratosphere and still have a budget Grand Cherokee with all the beef?
The new GC is significantly more expensive. The Trailhawk starts at $51,670. My '18 Trailhawk started at $43,295: $8500 less...! This is a big jump. New, more refined platform, but practically, you get a bit more ground clearance and the adjustable sway bars. In ’18 Jeep didn’t charge for paint (now $400). Destination charge is now an outrageous $1800! ($1100 on the '18), a profit center for Jeep. Also, it's worth noting that if you want a (sluggish) V8, it's not available on the Limited anymore, meaning you'll have pay a lot more for a higher trim level to get it. This is a lot of money for what cannot be described as Toyota levels of quality. No Thanks.
Toyota and "quality"? Yes, dependability, but there is no question this Jeep exudes quality. Also, the old Trackhawk was closely-aligned to a Laredo in base spec, save for the air suspension. This new model has far more tech unavailable on the WK2.
Man… amazing cool tech. Never thought I’d live to see the day where a suv has a full locker and a limited slip at the same time. If I was rich I’d definitely get this. Dreaming is ok too. Cool rig.
It doesn't have a full locker. It's an electronic limited slip differential and that's only available on the QDII vehicles and only on the rear. The only thing that truly locks is the center differential when in low range.
Thanks Steve hope you are feeling better … less snotty! I always look forward to your reviews and I’ve really been looking forward to the new Grand Cherokee. I’d be interested in hearing your opinion of the ride and handling vs a bmwX5 or Audi Q7. I had heard that Alfa Romeo engineers were involved in the design of this chassis and it was Stelantis’s goal to have this handle BETTER than it’s comparable BMW. I gather from your dad’s single comment that it is tight that he liked it’s handling. That is a journalistic comparison is important to me. Also payload? I realize this may be a preproduction model but when you do your towing test that is a very important number to me as the old Grand Cherokee only had a payload of 1050 Lbs. That made it only really a two passenger vehicle when towing at the limits (6200). I’m cross shopping this with the Nissan Pathfinder and it has a beefy 1298lbs …. Really a true three passenger tow vehicle and better fuel economy with its direct injected mill. I’d heard that this vehicle shed 250 lbs so that would probably explain the slight mpg increase.
i don't get why they would do a phev ala the wrangler. the 8 speed "torqueflight" transmission just got a update from ZF to take a 200hp 330ftlbs pancake motor where the torque converter goes. this seems like a much more desirable way to achieve a phev in the GC than what's in the wrangler because you can still bolt it right to your hemi.
i mean consider that if you run a 5.7l hemi to the 4th gen ZF phev, you can still do cylinder deactivation, change the cam phasing to run atkinson cycle, and get nearly the same mileage as the 4 pot, but then compound the full power of both motors and you can be just behind a hellcat. why is this being withheld?
I think the older model looks much better from the exterior. More rugged, more shapely, more aggressive, the new version looks too similar to all the other cookie cutter family minivan suvs. When you see that SRT coming at you down the road, there is nothing else like it.
I liked how the old one looked; but I really like how the new one looks. Simpler design, straighter lines. It's very elegant. Not cookie-cutter at all; most other unibody SUVs have ridiculous overstyling.
@@aldo90731 No we haven't but even the 2011 GC Laredo (base jeep) looks better than the limited 2022. It bulges more, more muscular. The SRT doesn't change that look anywhere except the tires are pushed out more. I used to own a 2011 Laredo, it just looked so much better than this new gen even in base trim.
Old one looked better on the outside, but the seats were pretty shitty, especially in the back. I had a look at the new one but couldn’t get over how bland it was.
I like the boxier appearance of the this new GC.. price not so much. I really wish Jeep would resurrect the iconic Jeep Cherokee XJ... classic boxy 4 door.... all it needed was to be slightly enlarged... but instead they discontinued it in 2001 and replaced it with that VW bug looking Liberty.... Jeep has been unsuccessfully trying to recreate what they lost ever since... First with the Commander, then the 2nd Gen Liberty , then the Patriot... all flops !!! I really want Jeep to make a true working mans sUv with the emphasis on the "U" .. There is a reason the old (1980s) Jeep wagoneers and Toyota land cruisers are so popular.... classic boxy look.. easy to see out of... The wrangler does not have the cargo room and I don't need a roll bar, and doors and roof to come off... I want a body on frame SUV I can see out of, use for hunting and camping, and easily load kayaks on.... a lower end new GC Laredo trim may first the bill !!!
Nice review and very impressive. I am just little worried about the reliability of the 3.6 litre Pentastar engine…do you guys know if the engine and transmission will be as reliable as the 5th gen 4Runner or close to it? Thank you 🙏 I am really impressed with Jeep and Ram but reliability is a big concern for me…I would pay extra for reliability…if they can make them super reliable. I am just thankful Jeep is not taking risks with Turbos and ecoboost like what Honda and Ford is doing.
Idk... I'm a bit of a cross between the 2 groups... I just got a GC L Limited. I do love my truck but I do wish it had a few more of the off-road features. Like maybe the E lockers... I don't want the full air suspension. I have it in the rear for the towing but I don't want the full thing... But I would love slightly better diffs... Especially because I live where it snows a decent bit...
God I really want to get a 4xe Limited or Overland, but 4xes have underperformed on other models, and have been so problematic. I think I'm just going to wait and see how things go, and pull the trigger in the Fall...and the way the L sales have gone, I think dealers will have HUGE deals in 2022, as it seems like Jeep has over produced.
Jeep is trying (and actually generally succeeding) to become a luxury brand. With more luxury and tech comes more $$$. Can still get a nice one under 50k.
it was better (more reliable) 20 years ago and somewhat user serviceable. new FCA/Stellantis products are well known for quickly becoming junk; like range rover.
My 98 Grand Cherokee SE 4L I6 with Selec-Trac and rear limited slip was about $32,000 new...yep, a limited edition was about $35-37k new back then....pretty much double, almost triple those prices now unfortunately. I love the 1st and 2nd gen Grand Cherokees, don't think I'd want anything newer than the 2004 WJ though.
This is the first grand cherokee not based on the mercedes developed WK platform since 2005. They REALLY had to do a clean sheet for this thing with the target market they're going after. And with what I see it's paid off very well, but time will tell if the sales hold up. The plug in hybrid overland trim with the trailhawk package is what has my interest because its a plug in hybrid in a world full of regular hybrids and full ev's, and phev's are the only kind of ev's I want. They are probably keeping the old grand cherokee for the SRT models until they get the SRT models onto the new platform (or if they do) because the ram classic is made for fleets more than anything else. They probably don't want the same gap in production ford had with the raptor being MIA for a year because they were late to market with it. Edit: the only real competitors to the grand cherokee are the bmw x5, gle, and q5, except those are dedicated luxury platforms without any real offroad. That only leaves the land rover discovery and maybe one of the budget range rovers. You could make some arguements for the 3 row grand cherokee L competing with all the CUV minivan things, but really the only competition for the grand cherokee L is the explorer and the aviator.
None are MB-based. The WK is a modified WJ. And the 2011+ was built on conjunction with the 2012 ML and 2013 GL-Class. Some say the Jeep version of the chassis is even more premium due to fortification for off-road mission.
it's a stellantis product, so wouldn't be surprised. people buy a lot on looks and financing options, they don't bother to research vehicles and their manufacturers. with this product you combine the worst of the american companies regarding reliability with 2 european companies not known for reliability so i wish anyone who buys one the best of luck.
@@hissingoose But even when they were just a US company they still weren't reliable...so at least nothing has changed LOL...if you are buying a Jeep, you should already know the headaches you will end up with LOL.
“Proven tech” yeah ok. It’s all garbage. My buddy had a 2019 grand cherokee with the 3.6 and 8 speed. That thing spent more time in the shop than on the road, plagued with electrical issues. Traction control issues.
Appears UR backhands have proven to reliably stop & decist Mr school gril (like the reliability of the Pan engine!). Or was he too sick to nervous laugh? We'll see next vid. There are two different grand cherokee models. The grand cherokee L is the longer wheelbase, 3 row version. It was available earlier which is why that is what you have seen more of. The two row is out now and is a good bit shorter.
So i've been watchin ur channel for couple of days now - old and new stuff - and daaaamn you guys are just stating opinions basen on nothing in particular... Like "this thing will be great for towing" or this will be "good offroading"... Based on what???? Most of the facts you cite are maker-based. I understand you borrow/loan your vehicles, but then state it clearly - "we didnt have the courage/insurance to test this, and all we can do i assume"... And dont call yourself a testing channel....

i don't get why they would do a phev ala the wrangler. the 8 speed "torqueflight" transmission just got a update from ZF to take a 200hp 330ftlbs pancake motor where the torque converter goes. this seems like a much more desirable way to achieve a phev in the GC than what's in the wrangler because you can still bolt it right to your hemi.
i mean consider that if you run a 5.7l hemi to the 4th gen ZF phev, you can still do cylinder deactivation, change the cam phasing to run atkinson cycle, and get nearly the same mileage as the 4 pot, but then compound the full power of both motors and you can be just behind a hellcat. why is this being withheld?
So what happens to the SRT and Track hawk models, what are they gonna do, soup up the Cherokee???
I think the older model looks much better from the exterior. More rugged, more shapely, more aggressive, the new version looks too similar to all the other cookie cutter family minivan suvs. When you see that SRT coming at you down the road, there is nothing else like it.
I liked how the old one looked; but I really like how the new one looks. Simpler design, straighter lines. It's very elegant. Not cookie-cutter at all; most other unibody SUVs have ridiculous overstyling.
@@mateuszmrozewski9705 will there be a track hawk version or that's not coming at all
In fairness, we haven’t yet seen the SRT version of the new Grand Cherokee.
So, no 3L diesel and more? It is such a great motor.
The new roof line looks very Suzuki Grand Vitara. I like it though. 4XE Trailhawk please.
selec-speed is useful when you're stuck
You guys look tight in there.
Nice review and very impressive. I am just little worried about the reliability of the 3.6 litre Pentastar engine…do you guys know if the engine and transmission will be as reliable as the 5th gen 4Runner or close to it? Thank you 🙏
I am really impressed with Jeep and Ram but reliability is a big concern for me…I would pay extra for reliability…if they can make them super reliable.
I am just thankful Jeep is not taking risks with Turbos and ecoboost like what Honda and Ford is doing.
3.6 has been around along time and with year after year refinement it’s one of the best engines produced!
@@markkiepke5801 thanks, good to know. If they are continually improving year after year on the 3.6 then it is good sign maybe they turned the corner.
I can only hope that actually will keep offering the « clasic » version as I don’t want to pay more for the « new » goodies.
I like it, but it's just too much I wouldn't want to pay for. I'd probably go last gen. Not sure I'd want a range rover like this.
The hood is not aligning with the fender on the passenger side. Oh well, this famous American quality.
I like the last gen price better…..good enough for me….
Jeep is trying (and actually generally succeeding) to become a luxury brand. With more luxury and tech comes more $$$. Can still get a nice one under 50k.
@@jakes5530
I bought 2021 Laredo 4x4 6 months ago, around 40k. It does carry a luxurious vibe and the handling is smooth.
Select speed is good to get you out of soft sand
roof line looks more like the old jeep wagaoneer than the new jeep wagoneer can still get a v8 !
20 years ago the Grand Cherokee was half that price fully loaded. Half the vehicle I guess lol
it was better (more reliable) 20 years ago and somewhat user serviceable. new FCA/Stellantis products are well known for quickly becoming junk; like range rover.
You obviously have to account for inflation and the fact that there’s probably 300 more safety/technology features in these things now
My 98 Grand Cherokee SE 4L I6 with Selec-Trac and rear limited slip was about $32,000 new...yep, a limited edition was about $35-37k new back then....pretty much double, almost triple those prices now unfortunately. I love the 1st and 2nd gen Grand Cherokees, don't think I'd want anything newer than the 2004 WJ though.
Natural inflation and rising car prices are not just a Jeep thing. Have you seen the cost of pickup trucks lately!?
@@hellkitty1014 Yes, the value of my 30+ year old Ranger has doubled LOL.
Is this now Truck King(s) ? I prefer Steve solo-power ....
We wonder why emissions are so high suvs
recently produced the 3.6 v6 number 5 million. Pentastar engine proudly made in Mexico 🇲🇽
Nothing wrong with Mexican made ! I worked there and loved it Coahuila!
Imagine paying $80 grand for a Jeep SUV 🤣🤣 By’s must be taking loans out for 25 years. 🤣🤣
They’re selling jeep suvs for $80?? Where
@@alp21188 Bend over and show ya 🤣👍
Too bad you can’t actually buy one with air suspension.
Don't they have a recall on these already
it's a stellantis product, so wouldn't be surprised. people buy a lot on looks and financing options, they don't bother to research vehicles and their manufacturers. with this product you combine the worst of the american companies regarding reliability with 2 european companies not known for reliability so i wish anyone who buys one the best of luck.
"Don't they have a recall on these already" -- You need to stop watching the shouting moron.
@@hissingoose But even when they were just a US company they still weren't reliable...so at least nothing has changed LOL...if you are buying a Jeep, you should already know the headaches you will end up with LOL.
First year models tend to.
@@mountainhobo There have been recalls on the new 2021 models, so...
72k Yeouch!
I have my pristine 2019 Ltd 4x4 GC for sale with only 45 thousand miles at only 40k in SoCal.
This isn't even trailhawk....
Part of it is, the off road portion in the middle is a trailhawk.
You know what would really be funny (as opposed to what giggle boy thinks is funny) would be you two woppers do a retro review on the Subaru Brat - Now that would hilarious.
Sounds like there is something about Steve's delivery you don't like - feel free to find other channels.
@@TruckKing I would - however - except for the schoolgirl giggle ur reviews are quite good - Another alternative is TFL & they are dopey and annoying as F. To goofy for my liking. So just keep the backhands in check & we're good.
How bout that Brat truck review idea? U in...
JUST A DURANGO
New design is too boxey. Too bad.
Jeeps are supposed to be boxy. 🙄
Anyone else kinda disappointed that the new Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer look so much alike?
What a stupid interior. It's so unnecessary to have screen for passanger
I hate the redesign, they really blew it. It didn't need a third row. Those who do, buy the Durango!!!
So then buy the 2 row model with the short wheel base
There are two different grand cherokee models. The grand cherokee L is the longer wheelbase, 3 row version. It was available earlier which is why that is what you have seen more of. The two row is out now and is a good bit shorter.
It's hideous.
So i've been watchin ur channel for couple of days now - old and new stuff - and daaaamn you guys are just stating opinions basen on nothing in particular...
Like "this thing will be great for towing" or this will be "good offroading"... Based on what????
Most of the facts you cite are maker-based.
You dont ever try to exceed trucks limits to see if its capable....
Like - i can read the add for myself - you're supposed to give it some testing/excersize/etc...
I understand you borrow/loan your vehicles, but then state it clearly - "we didnt have the courage/insurance to test this, and all we can do i assume"...
And dont call yourself a testing channel....
How suprising is it that the truck performs in the producer-based conditions????
sorry we aren't good enough for you. thankfully there are lots of other RUclips channels. Go find them.
