I saw the Catacombs when I was working in Palermo a few years ago. The bodies are literally upon the wall so that they're all slightly above your eye level as you walk around. I couldn't decide what was creepier: the dead bodies or the nonchalance of the tourists walking around and taking pictures.
Fun fact about the Darvaza gas crater: Spiders have been seen tossing themselves into the pit at night because they are attracted to the light and heat it gives off.
Sounds almost like the plot of the anime, "So Now I'm a Spider... " On another note, I've often said that if reincarnation is real & I come back as a spider, (like in the aforementioned anime), I was going to crawl to the nearest lake and toss myself in (after a good hysterical cry)... but now that I have learned of the Darvaza Gas Crater, at least I know that I have another option. LOL!!!
Just letting everyone know, The Death Road in Yungas is hardly used for transportation anymore. There are other roads to get to Coroico, which is the city you reach when crossing the trail. It's mostly for walking and mountain biking.
Actually, I've visited capuchin catacombs and Chernobyl/Pripyat and it was definitely worth visiting. In Pripyat, there is much to explore, truly one in a lifetime experience and also very safe to go there, so nothing to be afraid of. Worth visiting, one of the most unique places in the world
I live about an hour and a half from Centralia and have been there several times. The idea of Centralia is a lot more interesting than the reality of it at this point. The graffiti highway was buried with tons of dirt last year and there are basically no buildings left. It was interesting to visit, but the local government doesn't want people going there and has taken great lengths to try to remove it from existence.
Yeah, I was gonna say this. I'm not as close usually (SWPA resident) but my mom is from a town adjacent to Centralia, so I'm intimately familiar and usually in the area at least once a year for family stuff. Centralia was exciting in the 1980s and maybe 90s as it bled out but there's really nothing there now. The "graffiti highway" was probably the last interesting thing to see, and now it's gone. The spectacular visuals of great cracks of fire opening in the ground has largely diminished. There's probably still a few smokey areas to be found but it's really nothing like RUclips keeps rehashing these days. The state made good on tearing down every house and other building as people left / died / were forced out. Maybe the old borough building still remains? I don't even know. If you're on one of the roads passing through Centralia you probably won't even notice it unless you're looking for it.
Others scary places on earth: Snake Island, Brazil Catacombs of Paris , France Island of Dolls, Mexico Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum,West Virginia Hoia - Baiu forest, Romania
Nothing scary about N.Korea as long as you follow the rules and aren't an American (even then, its really not THAT bad, but there's extra hoops to go through first)

You sadly cannot visit the Beelitz Heilstätten ruins freely anymore. There is a new investor in place who fenced of the area and built a treetop walkway with an entrance fee that leads over the tops of the buildings. Apart from that the only way to get inside is a guided tour. I've been inside before the new owner and after. The walkway is worth it though.

I live near Centralia! About 20 miles away there's only a couple houses and a church left. A new owner put dirt on graffiti highway. Nothing to really see but still very cool. Ironically the fire is heading to a town called Ashland. I didn't think it was gonna be mentioned after the natural gas story.
@@dereklutz6935 If I recall correctly, a priest there (tons of years ago) had predicted that the town would disappear, but the church would remain - and it's the same church that's still there, no? I watched the "The Town that Was" documentary, incredibly haunting and heartbreaking.
I must say, as someone who lives within an hour of Centralia, it is quite a site to see. It now illegal to go there unfortunately, so park far away and walk.
Uhm.... no its not. There is absolutely no law that prevents you from visiting state owned land, much less Centralia . HOWEVER, if you get into any kind of trouble, be it medical, vehicle or crime related, don't expect help to be on the way.
