Yes it would. Gas will leak into your intake throw petcock vacuum hose. Test, if bad replace.. And she will run like new.. Let us know how this works out. Thank you for your Sub Luis. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Just started to try fixing and old Sportster 1200 that hasn't been in traffic for decades. I'm not a mechanic so it's just trial and error and your videos really helps! Thanks!!
@@TwoWheelRocco Plenty of questions, but one step at a time! Just ordered a new petcock and hopefully that will make it start without start gas spray. 💪🏽
@@TwoWheelRocco so I cleaned the tank, changed petcock, bought and mounted a new battery, filled her up with premium gas. Started with start gas spray and got her running as long as I throttle a little. After a few start ups I didn't need the spray and she started on full choke, but on idle she dies. Watched your other clips about issues so I located the the idle screw(?) and tweaked back and forth just man guessing (it's a swedish term for not actually knowing how to). So it got both better and worse but not so she worked without a little throttle. I have a sportster från 1997 and the petcock doesn't have a vacuum hose, is there something else I can do or another screw to tigthen or loosen up or is it in the carburateur the problem is? Thanks!
Another amazing and informative video. Extremely helpful as attempt to fix my bike. Great instructors, step by step explanations, exact tools you need...and tips. Thank you.
Rocco, you suggested testing the fuel valve from another video- I tested, was leaking, and just swapped them, what a difference. It runs like a different bike, problems solved. thank you for these videos and answering all us in the comments, big thank you
Great video. I bought a 05 1200c a couple of years ago. It never ran good and I thought I needed to have the carb worked on. The pet cock started leaking when I turned the gas on. I changed the Petcock today and was amazed how much better it now runs. Your video assisted me on the repair.
Happy to help. Yes that's where it all starts at that Petcock. When you have a leak in your diaphragm in your Petcock, You will get fuel into your intake through the vacuum line. Makes for a very lousy running motor. Thank you for watching and all your support Jim. Ride safe and have a great day.
There is a black rubber washer that goes between the screen and the petcock. It will leak without that. I always replace that screen along with the petcock. See how brown/yellow that one is? A new one is white. The reserve tube is built into the screen. It's a very cheap part, and they tend to get brittle after a while being always soaked in gas, especially with ethanol gas. I put just a tiny bit of oil, or WD-40 on the tank and petcock threads before putting everything back together. It helps prevent galling of the threads. The petcock is not that expensive, but the tank is. In fact you will likely never find another tank that matches your original. H-D no longer makes new tanks for carbureted models, but even back when they did they cost a fortune. I also completely remove the tank and turn it upside down to pour out any remaining gas. Then I lay it upside down on a soft towel or blanket while working on it. I'm a mechanic at an independent Harley shop. We do better work than most dealers, and charge less for it.
This video covers it. You need to rebuild your Petcock. Any questions just ask that will be a Dealer part. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching all your support. Jodie. Ride safe and have a great day.
Rocco, greetings from Russia, I hope you read it, thank you very much my friend, I have been suffering for so many days with the fact that my Sportster had a very rich mixture. I disconnected the vacuum line and gasoline poured out of it, thank you so much for your videos. good luck on the road my friend🤝
Happy all went well. Those Petcock are notorious for failing, but they are good. Set up with vacuum operated. Thank you for watching and all your support. Vdutkin. Ride safe and have a great day.
Aloha again, and I appreciate your diligence with my issue(s). Yes, the seat was cleaned with q-tip. Brand new screen was installed with petcock. Yes, there was rust in gas tank and at the bottom of the carb. Tank was drained to install petcock and rust removed. Also, rust was removed from bottom of carb. Tubes and hoses are fairly new! So, nothing else to check or is the cause, except for some possible debris that might have gotten in the needle valve/seat area? If not I'll tear apart the carb again.
Thank you TWR! One of your other great videos brought me here. My Shadow, previously running great all season (with a full tank of 91 oct ethanol-free gas, new air filter, new plugs, new battery since spring) died on me. Symptom was like it had run out of gas. Attempts to restart it fail except a couple of times it ran for 1-2 seconds, and then died again. I'm a novice, so much head scratching going on. I ordered a new petcock and so who knows. Thank you again - cheers!

I believe you have it all under control Casey. Petcock then test hose towards the carburator to see if it collapses, this will cut off your gas supply. That is the symptoms you have right now. if so, replace that too. Any problems just give me a call. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Hey Rocco, ended up draining the tank to check petcock pressure after you referred me to this video. Everything seemed fine, put new fuel in and bike started up no problem. Aloha again, thank you for your help with a link to a Needle Jet Valve replacement for my Harley. It took you less than One full day to get back to me. As always, wonderful video Rocco. If one decided to go manual petcock, what would you do with the vacuum line? I understand you would plug the carb, but what would go to the VOES? Merry Christmas to you, and blessings
I would not go with any after market petcock. From harley the diaphragm and screen for your petcock is very reasonable. Turning gas on and off can be a pain with aftermarket petcock. @@TwoWheelRocco 1996 xl1200s, i had problems with my bike cutting out at wide open throttle for a couple minutes. i deduced that at WOT, there is no vacuum to open the petcock and fuel bowl ran dry. @@TwoWheelRocco it can definitely not hold vacuum as i hear it hissing. recently bought the bike and i suspect previous owner has "modded" the petcock as fuel flows freely with the engine off. So hoping this is the cause of my issues. Awesome channel and thanks for your help!
Yes it will. How did the vacuum test go? Petcock is a dealer part. $35 Harley and buy a new screen those are the two most important things to start with clean fuel clean tank proper Petcock. I Changed mine But put the petcock on off Ran the bike till it used up the gas in line and Carb, then I drained the Tank first into a 5 gal container. then changed the Petcock. did have to raise tank and did not spill a drop of fuel....also...I always use a screw clamp on my Fuel Lines on Both ends....that way line stays tight on nipples and Vibrations and bumps while riding will not allow line to slip.

I have read that it’s better to install a manual petcock once your vacuum petcock needs replacing. Less things that can go wrong in the long run. Do you recommend this?
Two Wheel Rocco it’s a 2002 sportster xl1200. The fuel line from the petcock to the carb has some gunk near the fittings so I am going to replace those lines since they are 16 years old now, figured I would do the petcock while I’m there. I see online a lot of people have been replacing the vacuum petcock with a manual and just plugging off the left over vacuum line. I’m assuming the logic behind this is that it’s a simpler mechanism and less can go wrong?
Your choice... I would replace with new diaphragm kit at dealer for $32 dollars...or so....hope that helps...my reason...when motor is not running no free flowing fuel to carb...That can start other problems...I know you will shut off fuel........Bitch I forgot....cab. flooded garage smells like gas station...Ride safe and have a great day..Let me know how this works out.
Two Wheel Rocco So I went ahead and replaced the vacuum petcock with a manual petcock. And yes, while warming up my bike before a ride it died because i forgot to turn the fuel on. Thanks for the advice!

I have replaced the carburetor coil plug wires and plugs. My petcock valve I just noticed this is starting to leak out of the case. Do you think that this could cause those symptoms? Thanks for the awesome video Rocco.
That is your problem. There is a vacuum line that operate your petcock, the diaphragm is bad, This will pull gas into your intake and foul out your plugs. Replace and inspect vacuum hose to. Let me know how it works out.
@@TwoWheelRocco will do thank you for the quick reply Rocco. I just showed your channel to a few of my brothers. We love it. No BS just straight up knowledge and how to. You should have some new subscribers rolling in shortly.👍👍👍
@@TwoWheelRocco hey brother just wanted to thank you for your advice on that petcock valve. It fixed all the problems on my bike hasn't ran this great since I bought it. Rocco is the man.
Does not matter, you're testing Petcock Diaphragm for vacuum. your motor produces vacuum that opens the diaphragm and lets the fuel run freely. don't matter, reserve off or on. you're testing the diaphragm for any vacuum leaks if there's a vacuum leak fuel can bypass the diaphragm and work its way into your intake causing a very rich running condition as in too much fuel. Any questions just ask. Hope this helped
@@TwoWheelRocco Ok I think I understand now If the Vacuum is leaking fuel will get suck into the vacuum line and entering the intake burning up to much fuel and fowling the Plugs? Thanks stay safe out there.
Rocco hello again buddy! Thanks for the link on the needle float. I got impatient and ended up just going straight to Harley. Cost me 20 dollars. It stopped leaking fuel from the overflow hose but man it starts and dies out and idles rough and and dies out. I’m thinking I may have a bad petcock. Do you have a link for this? 2002 HD Sportster 1200. Thanks again bud!
I would agree test your petcock and see if it holes vacuum. Then look at the vacuum lines running off the carburetor and make sure they're all in good shape. They tend to degrade and collapse. Which causes fuel flow problems. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching JT. Ride safe and have a great day.
Roco can they clog? My bike died at 35 mph. Checked for spark have good spark. Good compression. Pulled the fuel line off the bottom of the petcock and with a 3/4 tank no gas is coming out of the bottom of the petcock. On and reserve position. Replace?
The petcock works of the vacuum, your motor creates. As the video shows, you need to test it with a vacuum pump. You can rent one at your auto store. You can test this with out removing petcock from your tank. Sometimes the vacuum line get old and collapse. This is the small line that runs off the top of your Carburator to your petcock, this will stops your gas flow with a bad hose or diaphagm on your petcock. What year? how many miles on your bike? Let me know how this works out. Thank you for your Sub Donovon. Any question just ask.
It's a 1995 sporty xl1200 with 20k miles on it. I guess I'll check the vacuum on it and if it's good I'll go to the carb next. I just rebuilt the carb right before winter. I have been riding all winter in idaho. Just filled the tank. Rode 20 miles and got 6 blocks from my house yesterday and it died. But fuel should be pouring out of the bottom of petcock yes?
@@TwoWheelRocco if it's not supposed to with a good petcock and it's holding the gas in. Then I'm assuming it's somewhere in my carb. At least I know it's fuel and not electrical or mechanical.
Your petcock works off vacuum...1995 good chance Your need to rebuild your petcock. Dealer sell replacement valve for your Petcock for about $45 dollars. And your bike will run great. Test and repair. It will only flow fuel when you hook up to a vacuum pump to your petcock. This will act like you motor is pulling vacuum. Please watch the video. Any question just ask. Very common problem. Let us know how it works out.
Just cranked with the vacuum on the petcock fuel comes out I'm assuming petcock is good. Time to pull carb again I'll let you know what I find tomorrow when there's daylight. Thanks Rocco for all the good videos!
rocco, could you give me any advice? I have a '97 xlh1200s. a few months ago i took it up to 99 and lost all power until I dropped down to 60. I assumed it just couldn't get anymore fuel. it's been awhile but now it won't go over 80. I completely cleaned the carb today, and replaced a rotting vacuum hose but the issue is still there. it does backfire or pop a lot, especially when downshifting to slow down. and going up a hill to work yesterday about 60 it lost power again, like it had no fuel. any ideas I could pursue? I can't really afford the Harley shop at the moment.
I would look at petcock and tank for dirty screen.. and vacuum line to petcock.. ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html Hope this helps,Let me know how this works out.
Happy to help. I would buy the kit say $40 $50 to fix Petcock diaphragm from the dealer maybe $75 now. I keep everything stock the designed is pretty damn good. most carbureted motorcycles use this. Thank you for watching and your sub Kenny. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
Happy to help. I would stay with the vacuum operated one. It's not that expensive to replace that vacuum unit. I'm like vacuum Petcock because then you never got to worry about turning gas off or on. Which is a big plus if your carburetor starts to leak, you will not be putting stress on your float because without vacuum you cannot flow fuel to the carbureto.r That's the upside. Thank you for watching and all your support Sam. Let us know what you think. Ride safe and have a great day.
Just replaced my petcock on my 2000 Sportster 1200 xl custom had the old one in this video on it and swapped it for the new one you put on here. For some reason it not releasing fuel out of the petcock in on or reserve position. Could there be a plug in the petcock from the manufacturer? What else should I check?
Happy to help. There is no plug in an OEM reserve set up. I would remove the Petcock and test it with air. Switch it to reserve an on and make sure you have it on reserve. 6 o'clock is reserve and on 12 o'clock on your Petcock Gas. so you might have the switch in the wrong spot because there is an off. Take a close look Thank you for watching and your sub Ricky. Any questions just ask. Ride safe and have a great day let us know how it works out.
Would a bad petcock be easy to diagnose let's say if you fuel up the bike then it runs really rich with some lower than norm rpms and some black smoke. OR when you put the kick stand down it bogs a bit with small puffs.
Two Wheel Rocco I found it on the carb which was disconnected and sitting in the garage....... I have spent 8 hours a day the past 3 days trying to figure out what the hell is going on. I'm a damn dummy. Your video still helped me out thank you buddy!

Aloha again, ok I've replaced the petcock and it still leaked from the overflow tube. Then I replaced the float needle valve. At first NO leak from overflow tube! But, after a couple of times of running the Harley '95 Sportster it started to leak gas again from the overflow tube again! What else can it be? Could it be a bad float needle or could it be mis-installed?
Clean the float needle seat, With a Q-tip. Dirt is in the system and is causing havoc, make sure gas hoses are new or clean. all it takes a piece of dirt from an old hose to start this process over, you are right there Steve. you know you had it and then you started writing it make sure you have a screen at your pitcock. And is there rust in your gas tank?
Hey. I have a 01 Sportster. It seem to wanna leak sometimes. Sometimes worse then other times. My line that runs from the petcock to the carburetor is dry rotted a little. Could that be why it’s leaking or does it need a whole replacement? Thanks!

Hey Rocco, so I've read through the comments and seen a few people have the same problem as me with spark plugs fouling with soot, and also issues you describe in a video about the bike not running right so it's led me to believe that my pet cock valves is not operating properly. I should also add that the bike was running but not very well, so I followed your video about cleaning the carburettor last week the bike started up and ran for about 2 minutes before the revs increased and then the bike stopped and i have been unable to start it again since. on closer inspection before taking everything to bits my petcock valve does not have a vacuum hose on the back so I followed the vacuum hose from the carburettor back through the engine and it goes to an electrical connection which I believe may be a "v.o.e.s", the bike is a 1989 883 sportster. do you have any advice ? can this switch be bypassed by adding the stock part like you or is this right for my bike to have this switch? i made a short video to make it clear .... ruclips.net/video/gQvhupXFTKM/видео.html p.s love your content.

nice - wish I'd seen this sooner. Took me several hours messing with my Sportster before I finally figured out what was going wrong.

I have read that it’s better to install a manual petcock once your vacuum petcock needs replacing. Less things that can go wrong in the long run. Do you recommend this?
It is better to stay with the stock petcock set up. what year sportster do you have?

The bike starts fine then the idle drops after about 5 min, start to see a little black smoke out the pipes the wants to die a misses when I give it throttle. Always starts and runs fine when cold. Took carb off and cleaned it good. Would the mixture setting cause my symptoms. I never messed with my carb settings except when drilling out the screw cover when new. The petcock works of the vacuum, your motor creates. As the video shows, you need to test it with a vacuum pump. You can rent one at your auto store. You can test this with out removing petcock from your tank. Sometimes the vacuum line get old and collapse.
Hey Rocco, do you have a link for where you bought the new petcock? I can't seem to find the one I need. Thanks
That is a dealer item....Hope that helps./ Ride safe and have a great day.
Two Wheel Rocco yup found it finally. Thank you for responding. Your videos have helped me with several projects, keep em coming man. Thanks
Happy to help..Let me know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
Where did you find the new petcock just like the one in this video?
Hey. I have a 01 Sportster. It seem to wanna leak sometimes. Sometimes worse then other times. My line that runs from the petcock to the carburetor is dry rotted a little. Could that be why it’s leaking or does it need a whole replacement? Thanks!
Happy to help. Sounds like you have a Fuel Line failure replaced the fuel line inlet on your carburetor. I will send you a video on it. Thank you for watching and all your support Dan. Ride safe. Have a great day. Let us know how it works out. ruclips.net/video/GH8A3DsjpeE/видео.htmlsi=1_-fHighqgMGbeT5. Ebay $10 apart probably 20 now. The vinyl gets a hairline crack and as it warms up it tends to leak it will get worse fix it. It is an old motorcycle.
Ty my friend mine is very hard to turn. The bike has 17000 miles on her
Tested and rebuild petcock. very easy task buy a new tank screen. but test it first and see if the diaphragm is good. watch the video and let me know how it turns That is where I would start.
Where do you suggest buying a new one?
Happy to help. I usually buy this at the dealership. Thank you for watching all your support. They used to be about between 40 and $60. Ride safe and have a great day.

Happy to Help, That would be a dealer part $50 any place else not so good. Let us know how it works out.. Thank You for watching and your sub. Ride Safe and have a great day
I have the petcock rebuild kit. Will that help with a vacuum issue or should I put a new petcock replacement in? I have a 97 1200
Happy to help. Is this one from the HD dealer That has the replacement diaphragm with your replacement petcock. If it's not from the dealer it's not the OEM replacement petcock. How much was it? Thank you for watching and your sub Dos Chi Chi's.. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco I’m not entirely sure. I believe it’s the original petcock and I bought a rebuild kit from a aftermarket store called konquers near the Harley dealership. I’ll take a wack at it and if my problem persists I will go grab a new petcock from the dealer. Thanks for the reply.
@@doschichis2735 sounds like a plan. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day.
My 90 softail was running awesome. Until I took it to get my oils changed. Got it back running low. They said they only did the oil change but I wonder??
1990 30 years new. Give it the once over. Start with Remove air filter, Start it and see if its a air filter problem. lots of times theses bikes sit and old oil fouls up air filter. Take a look and see if it is dirty. Let us know how this works out.
Thanks
I just bought a new stock petcock for my Heritage Springer from the dealer, it cost 100 bucks. Where did you go to get yours for 30-50 bucks?
Happy help. Things have change.....I got mine from the dealer... Mine was the diaphragm rebuild kit. Did you buy a whole new Petcock.? Thank you for watching and all your support Craig. Ride safe and have a great day.
@@TwoWheelRocco Yes, I bought a whole new part. That's Harley for you. They didn't try and save me money with a rebuild kit. Some dealerships just don't care. HD really stands for Hundred Dollars :)
@@chewiescustompuzzles I Agree, They have a bad name. When it comes to parts and service. They need to change.
Great vid !!!
Happy to Help, Any questions just ask. Thank you for your Sub Bobby. Let us know how this works out. Ride Safe and have a great day.
I need a vacuum petcock like this. Cant find anywhere for 39$! Any help please!
You will need to go to Harley Davidson Dealer and order it there. Do not order some after market from other supplier.. Hope this helps Let me know how this works out.
Yeah I found them dirty bucks let me ask ya dis. Could that also stop gas from even flowing into the carburetor from there if that diaphragm is won't hold pressure?
I’m not getting any fuel to my carburetor. If the peacock is bad can it stop fuel to the carb ?
Happy to help. If you're not getting Fuel to your Carburator test, the peacock for the Diaphragm to be good. Most likely remove the Petcock clean it and buy a new tank screen. Let us know how it works out. Any questions just ask. And yes, the dirt can build up and block fuel. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching all your support David. Ride safe and have a great day..
wheel in the sky keeps on turning. good song!,
1999 Road King that I did carb work on. I cleaned it as adjusted float. Still has gas coming out of carb. I installed a new carb and now gas is coming out of overflow tube and carb. It ran and started for few minutes but right after shut off it leaked same scenario. I have a manual petcock. Could that be the problem? How do you test a manual petcock?
Happy to help. You need to replace your float needle jet as for your new carburetor. It could be just Chinese junk. Take your original Harley Davidson, carbureted and replace the float needle jet. Thank you for watching and all your support. You should never need an adjustment on your float, the needle jet rubber gets compromised by the ethanol in the fuel. buy a brand new one and your problem should be behind you. Ride safe have a great day just ask.
Your manual petcock will not be the problem. The only thing that could go wrong with them is they leak from the Petcock.
How do you feel about the petcocks with no vacuum line ?
I like the OEM ones that are vacuum operated they are not that expensive to repair and they will work. You don't have to worry about putting gas on or off because it's vacuum operated. I do favor vacuum operated petcocks. Hope this helps. Thank you for your Sub Joshua. Ride Safe and have a great day.
I would lean toward fuel. Leaned out, idle raise. No fuel and died. Squirt some gas in your carb. and see what happens. If she wants to start. Then clean tank, check tank screen. then clean petcock. That vacuum hose is plugged to your ignition advance. Let me know how that works out..
That hose is your oil vent hose. After market, Hope this helps.
@@TwoWheelRocco thanks , I will check all that and let you know.👍
@@TwoWheelRocco thanks Rocco, I cleaned out the tank and used fresh fuel, she's running again. P.s just watched your latest video it is very comprehensive and covers alot of questions. You should get patreon I would subscribe to it, to say thanks and give back to you.

Hey Rocco, my sportster will start bogging out when I’m at full throttle. Can the peacock be a problem?
Happy to Help, Test your peacock and check your vacuum lines, Sometimes the old vacuum lines will collapse and cut off vacuum supply..This will shut down slow down fuel. sounds like lack of fuel. Let us know how it works out. Thank you for your Sub Markus. Ride Safe and have a great day.
