    Here’s an in-depth look on how to join and register your works with ASCAP.

      Hypothetically if you have Three people??????? The writer , the beat maker and the publisher, how are we supposed to split up the 100% to keep from fighting ........... just in general 😆😁

    • @saadhaddadmusic
      @saadhaddadmusic  3 года назад +2

      @@starhollywood well the publisher would get 100% of his share, but as far as the folks that wrote the tune itself they would need to come up with a way to split the writer share. It could be 50/50 or any other combination. Both writers would need to register for ASCAP and divide the writer share accordingly on the same registered title. Hope that makes sense! Good question.

      On ASCAP I registered my friend as the artist and I registered as the publisher so 50 percent would go to him as the writer and the other 50 percent would go to me as his publisher but we both have to be registered on ascap ??? Is that right

    I'm very new to composing and don't know the first thing about how I would even get my music published. I'm still a year or two away from having some scores ready, but I am very interested in how to do this. I've enjoyed your instructional videos and have subscribed. This is information that is not that often covered and I'm finding it quite helpful and at the same time it raises more questions for a beginner. Loved your video on contests and am encouraged to send something to the Kaleidoscope contest when I revise my string symphony.

    So what happens when a TV company like netflix finds and wants to use your music? Do they buy and download the track from whatever music library you put it on? Then does ASCAP get immediately notified of the purchase then notifies you with your shares? Thanks for the vid

    • @saadhaddadmusic
      @saadhaddadmusic  4 года назад +4

      If the track gets used there will be a cue sheet that gets generated - as long as your track is registered through ASCAP with both you as the writer and your music library (aka your "publisher") registered on the aforementioned title of that specific track, then you should be getting some kind of credit within 1-3 years (that's my experience at least with the genre of classical music, which is what I'm more closely affiliated with). Good question though, especially in regards to Netflix.

    • @saadhaddadmusic
      @saadhaddadmusic  3 года назад

      good question, and seems like a good idea for me to cover in a video soon. Here's what I found on ASCAP's site if you google search sync license ascap:
      What Licenses Must I Get To Use A Song In My Film?
      A: If you are using a pre-recorded song or another pre-recorded piece of music in your film, there are two rights you need to clear; that is to say, you need to get two different licenses to use the music.
      Synchronization License: This is the right to synchronize a song or a piece of music with your visual image. It must be obtained from the copyright owner of the music, which is usually the publisher. You can find out who the publisher is by using ASCAP's Clearance Express (ACE) at www.ascap.com/ace. Songs that are not represented by ASCAP might be found at HFA (www.harryfox.com). You will be provided with a contact at the publisher's Business Affairs or Licensing Department.
      Master Use License: This is the right to reproduce a specific recording of a song in your film. You clear this right with the record label who owns the specific recording you would like to use; see the liner notes of the recording to find out which company this is. Alternatively, you can get contact information for record labels by calling ASCAP's Film/TV Department. You will be provided with a contact at the record label's Business Affairs Department.

    Great video, but I've scoured the web and I can't get this answer. If you write, compose, produce and perform, you put yourself as 50%. If you distributed through CDBABY PRO, who do you put as the publisher? I tried to type it in but I don't know which is legit. You put yourself as pub.....so I googled how to make your own publishing account, got it. Also, CDBABY says they already register your works I think(you attribute your IPI when you sign up for a specific release), yet these works don't show up as registered in my ascap account registers works list.. Where are they lol. This is very confusing. What do I put as the publisher if I use CDbaby pro (who uses SONGTRUST I guess for collecting)? Thanks

      It’s a specific problem of course but unfortunately I’ve never used CDBABY PRO, all I did was make a name (Dib press) as my publisher several years ago and linked that account with my registered works from my writer account. I think CD BABY PRO does this themselves but personally I like to do it all myself than let a 3rd party handle my affairs, but that’s just me! I hope someone knows an answer to this.

      @@andresitopr_6340 I wouldn't know, you would need to contact your label directly to confirm which publisher they're affiliated with.

    I joined ASCAP back in March 2020 as a Writer and then gave my IPI# to the publisher who registered my 1 work. Fast forward to now March 2021 I have written an album (Indie Artist) and I want to register my works myself. However, watching your video - I made the big mistake of NOT joining as BOTH writer/publisher.
    I have now created a new account with ASCAP and joined as just a publisher and I'm waiting now for my IPI# as a publisher. Will this pose any problems as I will simply use my two different IPI #s - one as a writer and one as a publisher?
    If this is ok - then do you recommend me registering my works/album through my writer account or publisher account? or does it matter?
    Thank you!

      Great question, I would register your works with your writer account, but make sure to “link” your new publisher account. Each share is 50%. I don’t think it matters that the IPI is different. Yes, I always recommend to go with writer and publisher accounts! You can always sign off your publisher rights later if a label/publisher wants those rights later on.

      I'm not quite sure what your specific situation is, but they generally should get back to you, especially after direct messages.
