    • @AnimaMandala
      @AnimaMandala 18 дней назад +20

      Even if it doesn't result in prison time, taking this to court would still do a number on those neighbors. OP's proof of ownership against the "valid" work order speaks volumes about what lines these people are willing to cross, and someone with authority needs to put them in their place.

    • @foogod4237

      IANAL, but there is actually a legal term for this sort of thing. It is called "conversion" (exerting unauthorized use or control of someone else's property). It really should not be hard to file (and win) a civil lawsuit against the neighbors to recover damages for any costs of repainting the house the correct color again (plus legal fees, compensation for any lost income due to the need to take time off work to deal with the situation, etc).
      They would not be able to sue for fraud, because they were not actually a party to the contract between them and the painters (the _painters_ could sue for fraud, but that would only be if they were damaged by the exchange in some way).

I ended up apologizing to my neighbor (whose name I now know!) and telling her I didn't realize how inappropriate my question was. She accepted the apology and we still nod and smile in the hallway when we see each other.
    I will say that I talked to my old man neighbor yesterday and he told me that she left him a tray of fudge over the weekend for the holidays, and I received no such fudge, so I know there is lingering weirdness from my ask... and I totally understand it and do not feel that I deserve fudge.

    Uninvited kids story: OP, I think you helped save your neighbor from a bullet.
    Old neighbors story: OP, maybe you could turn your doorbell into the equivalent of a joy buzzer? Some security cameras are definitely in order.
    Painted house story: I've seen this story elsewhere. OP gets her house repainted, yellow of course, and drives the neighbors nuts again. The neighbors also attempt to sue OP to recover the cost of their paying to have her house painted. Yeah, that didn't work either.

    • @yukikitsune7366
      @yukikitsune7366 18 дней назад +2

      Unfortunately for the Old Neighbors story, turning the doorbell into the equivalent of a joybuzzer would probably be illegal. At least in the US it would be. It would probably classified as a booby trap which isn't considered a legally acceptable way of "defending your property", at least not without a sign that says something along the lines of "Warning this doorbell will shock you if you press it".

      A 9v battery attached to some copper leads on a doorbell is perfectly acceptable as it only gives enough shock to warn a person off but not cause harm even if they have a pacemaker.

    • @Silverhorse777
      @Silverhorse777 17 дней назад +1

      @@FirstIsa WTF are you talking about? ANY kind of booby trap is illegal, regardless of the level of the harm it causes, since it's a device obviously designed and used specifically for this, in many countries it's a crime to make and use it, automatically, sometimes even without the actual victim, as long as there was an intention to cause harm. A warning sign, a siren, any other device designed to warn people or just keep them away is legal (and even there are limits, for example, some kinds of barbed wire are illegal or can be used only in special cases), any one being used to intentionally harm them in any way, shape or form isn't. I don't know even one country where things like this could be legal depending on the level of harm it causes.

    • @FirstIsa
      @FirstIsa 17 дней назад +2

      @@Silverhorse777 US law is a pretty broad topic and laws can vary from state to state, hell they can even vary county to county. I can set leg traps on my property and it wouldn't be illegal- those are booby traps and due to where I live and issues with large predators they are considered legal as long as they are on my property.
      Heck a simple home defense system that sounds an audible alarm when triggered is a booby trap, and if your unlucky and the person breaking in has a bad heart (for example from years of drug abuse damaging the valves) the sudden loud noise could cause a cardiac event and kill them.
      If your in the range of warning a person away without obvious intent to cause grievous bodily harm or death your usually safe legally. a small joy buzzer for a door bell could just as easily be defended as claiming it was a prank on a friend that plays ding dong ditch all the time.

If it is a no, it's a no. Nothing creepy about it. It was perfectly to ASK in the older days, and nobody batted an eye if the response was a no. STORY 4: Back in the late 80s O had a crazy neighbor like that. She had a little toddler that she plop in the front yard and then go inside and watch TV. The kid would start wandering into the street. Now she lived directly across the street from an elderly guy I'll call Mr. Mac. (I lived a few doors down from Mac.) I was sitting on my porch talking to a friend when the kid wandered into the road. Mr. Mac walked over picked him up and knocked on her door telling her "You need to mind your child. He could get hit by a car outside alone." This crazy woman says she thought Mr. Mac was watching him. He laughed in her face and said in "Nope, nope, I am not watching your kid." . She then pointed to me and my buddy and said "Well, *ME* and *My buddy* are outside. They can watch him." I yelled across the street "I AM NOT watching your kid. Don't even THINK about that happening."
    Funny thing is she lived with the kids father. (I don't think they were married) but he was at work in the daytime. One day she came knocking on my door holding the kid. He had cut his hand somehow and she asked if I would drive them to the ER. The cut wasn't bad but I'm no doctor, and hey, he's a toddler....so I did. They bandaged up the kid (who wasn't even crying) and I drove back home with them both. When I pulled into my driveway she asked if she could borrow some milk. I left her and the kid in the living room while I went to my kitchen. When I got back she was gone, but the kid was in front of my TV. Oh, hell no.
    Now I was about to scoop the kid up and take him home, but just then I saw her husband/boyfriend/kid's father marching to my door. He was pissed, but not at me. Seems he got home from work early, asked where his son was while she was laying on the couch watching TV and she told him she left him at my house. I didn't know the guy well, but he was savvy enough to know she had dumped him on me. He apologized for her and took his son home. The whole street could hear him yelling at her after that.
    I don't know what happened to them as I moved out shortly after that. I guess I should have asked Mr. Mac.

Art eventually married and did all the cooking in his home every Sunday, including upside-down yeast cinnamon rolls (the gooey kind) for breakfast. Bob never married, and to this day he gets most of his meals at McDonald's.

    OK to the comments that were read on the last story. Asking twice is not pestering nor is it entitled. Now anymore times would start putting it into those things. Yes it was weird that OP didn't even try to get to know the woman first. But just asking isn't a bad thing. It is the demanding that is bad. And OP didn't demand anything.

    For the last story, I don't think asking once was bad or entitled. That can be normal enough. When the answer is no, it's time to move on. It's the reaction of complaining and trying to make her out as the bad person that makes it all negative.

    Cooking for more than 1 person isn’t as easy as OP assumes it is. You need to factor in purchasing ingredients, storage, preparation, etc. Also it’s possible that her pots and pans and other cooking and baking equipment are only suitable for a single person. I’m thinking he should have just asked her if she wouldn’t mind sharing her recipes and use that as a starting point for learning to cook for himself.

      That is a great way to start something. And include the single older man. Maybe turn it into all three cooking for each other ones or twice a week. NOT make it a planned thing, just a "I will be cooking X tomorrow, would you also like some? It's a dish much easier to make a lot of."

    Last story...
    I'm a single mother.
    If one of my neighbors approached me with the same request, offering to pay, and was respectful id cook for him.
    Wouldn't be the first time, probably won't be the last.
    He's trying to be healthier and cost effective.
    At least he knows his weak points (no cooking skills).
    She, and by default a bunch of you, have overreacted to a request that for many decades would have been normal.
    People have become incredibly selfish and self-centered.
    People used to care about their neighbors.
    He's NTA.
    But a lot of you could use a good look at compassion.
    If he was asking her to do it for free I could agree.
    He's not.
    Maybe he also thought the extra cash income would be a benefit.
    Maybe he'd be willing to split shopping duties and fees as well.
    Ask questions before assuming the worst.

      I would also consider the offer and get to know the neighbor a bit more. Who knows- he could come in handy at some point if you’re in need of something he could do. Mostly tho if I cook extra or have leftovers I save it for lunch the next day. But being able to plan accordingly would help if sharing with someone

    Step one...find the three ugliest shades of paint you can. Step two...paint pokedots all over your grey house.step three...when neighbors come over tell them how grateful you are for their generosity and you will be certain to return the favor. Afterall, the neighborhood just doesn't feel the same without a yellow house, and you are more than happy to fix that problem.

    Story 4: OP should figure out how much salary she would have earned at the library if she had interviewed and got the job. Not how much per hour or per year, but how much over her entire career. And then sue Karen for THAT amount. Probably somewhere in the low 7 digits.
    And yes, she should have called police. And she should have decked Karen.

    Are there specific requirements to reporting an abusive mother and/or abandoned child? OP told Karen she wouldn't be there, Karen left her child on OP's porch anyway, the child was alone for 3 hours, all because Karen "couldn't find anyone else." That's willful abandonment. Based on how this story ended, I'm guessing she never tried to find anyone else. And if that incident wasn't enough to call the authorities, how do you not call them after Karen follows you and leaves her child in your car? If anything, wouldn't there be a way to reach out to Karen's husband sooner? How much money was he "paying the babysitter" and what was Karen doing with all of that money?
