I was in rosemarys babes, Eerie Von was my drummer. When glen had the first idea of samhain i used to drive eerie and we would pick up Glen and go back to Eerie Vons house and help glen flesh out some of the first songs.

Just by listening to what came after Glenn stopped working with the original line up of Danzig and Rick Rubin, you can kinda tell how he “writes” …I’ve always assumed he’s come into the room with a skeletal outline of a song, then guys kinda flesh it out in the recording process. Probably similar to how Springsteen, Bowie, Elton or any other “leader” of the band operates. If anything, I miss his work with Christ and Biscuits the most, there’s zero denying what those two brought to the table, listening to the other albums.

It aint no mystery, GD writes and arranges most of the stuff, shows the musicians how he wants the songs to go, they add their style and maybe in the process comes up with something that he likes and they add it to the song. I know that Rubin was helped arrange Mother, but since GD wrote the parts, he gets the writing credits. Its quite common in bands were one guy is the main source for songwriting/composing/arranging the stuff. I did it alot in my old band.

    • @Frumess

People talk about that all the time - it's beyond obvious and true. That original line up was FIRE. And they wouldn't get that gusto back until Todd Youth and Howie Pyro joined the band. The current line up of Danzig is tight and stable!

The WORST thing Glenn did was let go of his OG lineup... especially Chuck and John.
And the fact that they left just as the band was riding the wave made by "Mother"
could not have been worse timing. If anything, Glenn should have been
bending over backwards to see to it that he kept that roster of band mates...
at least for another 2 records.

@@VredesStall GD wanted to move to a other area in the music and JC & EV didnt like the way it was going . On 4P Glenn plays alot of guitar because he wanted it in another way than what JC could play. Glenn is a old punk and JC a trained classic rock guy, it was bound to happen. Glad GD soldiered on , cus he has made great tracks since. But not what classic rockers like.

When Danzig canned Damien and hired the heavy metal guy, to me that was the death of Samhain. But Glenn wanted to jump on the KNAC metal payday train that was ever so popular back in the late 80s. Many bands did this: Suicidal Tendencies, Corrosion Of Conformity, etc.

In my experience (40yrs of rock/punk bands) the more egalitarian the songwriting process the worse it will be. An inspired primary writer with one other person on the same wavelength, but one who is not a driven or inspired writer, rather one who can compliment sparingly is the best bet.
Dave Wydorf of MM would never have created all those great tunes with 4 other members having equal input; same with Glenn.
