Funny coming across this now because I posted something on a different one of your videos a couple days ago that mirrors a lot of these sentiments. EAD is definitely my least favorite release and while I think Robo’s playing has a lot to do with it (not just the lightning speed, the time keeping in general-listen to how much those chorus tags drag in the opening track), it’s not the full picture though. Part of it is the songs themselves, and part of it is the execution of them. Nothing wrong with fast songs but when they’re so fast that the greatest vocalist in punk rock can’t be distinguished from every other punk band of that era, it’s a bummer to me. The Elvis-like vocals are a huge part of what made The Misfits special and memorable to me, as are the catchy sing along choruses, and on this record it felt like they were trying to be status quo rather than the pioneers that they really were (IMO). On the plus side, I think the record actually has the best guitar sound out of any of them. It’s more up front as opposed to being buried in the back, and I always preferred Doyle’s tone over Bobby’s (playing ability aside), but Glenn, in addition to having to rush through the vocal parts, also is drowned out sonically and can barely be heard. I think the album would have benefitted more from having the vocals be more present in the mix. I also think it would have benefitted from having literally any other Misfits drummer, which especially holds true for their live shows at the time. Again, it’s not all Robo’s fault they went “fast”, look at ‘Mommy’ from WAU and a few others from that time. But I do think Robo took something that was already a bit of a drastic change and dialed it up to 11 right off the bat, which to me was just too far in the wrong direction. Even the older material suffered from this once he joined. I physically can’t listen to them do 138 with him on drums, but I take no joy in saying any of this. As for the production of the album and the notion that nobody in the band wound up being happy with it, which I’ve also heard, it probably has to do with what’s mentioned here. The band recording the music supposedly without Glenn’s input which apparently displeased Glenn, then him going back and editing stuff to be more along the lines of what he had in mind, which displeased the rest of the guys because it’s not an accurate representation of what they recorded. At the end of the day it seems like they wound up somewhere in the middle and nobody ultimately got what they were looking for as a result. Anyway, I appreciate and enjoy having a forum where we can discuss this stuff, which is super interesting to me. Hope you keep doing these

Many of them misfits fans as well. Those bands are septic death, negative gain, and YDi they all had similar horror like themes and played extremely fast hardcore music
I like this video. I don't put as much thought as you do into this. Earth AD was not a favorite album of mine when it came out and I still don't listen to it that much. The samhain stuff that came after I still wasn't a big fan of. I was confused by the time the first Danzig album came out... But I was still just the kid going through what kids go through.... And that first Danzig album made me change my opinion about music. You couldn't slam dance to it but it was still just as raw and powerful as anything before. It was recorded beautifully and it was well done with musicians that had chops. Glenn's journey on making music has helped me open my mind to things I necessarily wouldn't have opened my mind to back in those days because I was hardcore punk all the time. I appreciate Glenn for not being pigeonholed into what other people allow themselves to be. For lack of a better example, I think Glenn wasn't going to allow himself to be the Ramones for the rest of his life. I got a lot of respect for that. I'm a musician myself and as I've grown up and grown my music has not stayed in one genre or the same. It's fun to do something different. No matter what style of music you play as long as you're honest that's what counts.
@@Frumess robo's style of drumming is 100 times more aggressive than anyone else that ever occupied the seat. as a result the music was driven much harder.
What? It's recorded like shit. It could have been a 10,000X better record with better production, vocals mixed properly etc.. As it is, Spot's production is barely passable and just makes me try to image how much better it could have sounded with a more capable engineer.
As far as the extra 4 more songs initially intended for Samhain, I'm not able to VERIFY the validity of that however I don't have any doubts about it because I have been a long time fan of Danzig in general.
I love thd totally distorted aggro sound of "Earth A.D.". Danzig though spent the 80s and most of the 90s slagging the album. From what I remember he thought the songs were way too fast and too much like the " Hardcore thrash" sound that was huge in 82-83. Also hd thought Misfits should be ahead of the times not part of them. Enjoy seeing these rare interviews and footage.
Not sure if this has already been addressed, but when you are talking about samhain the song being played fast, you can hear and see that exact fast tempo on the vhs live arena show (samhain box set), it’s brutal
Broski!! I found final descent I'd a used CD store. I've read GD sez that LP was done with a drum mschine. I was NO schwayy! Then you listen to Lords OT lefthand and ur "right on"
Nah, sounded more like Iron maiden. It's actually cool for what it is IMO. It's a shame Jerry and Doyle don't want to put it out. Like why the fuck not? I'd definitely buy a copy! I had the 5 song cd when I was a kid. If you look online, a few people have the full unreleased album. Ain't nothing like the Misfits, but it's cool power metal.
Hey does anyone have any info on recent releases of Earth AD being 45 rpm as opposed to 33rpm!? Someone claimed they got one- I want one! But if that's true I'm wondering if there's a way to determine this before buying any random new pressing of EAD.
Found the listing on Discogs! Came out last year. There's no way to really tell until it's opened. Messaged every seller on Discogs to make sure- verified after opening. Didn't want to buy a bunch only to realize it's not 45 rpm.
I worked for them for many years. Hardcare became trendy so thats the way whey went. They broke up about a year before the album came out. Robot did a different kind of drumming
I can see those Earth AD songs as Samhain. Hellhound slowed down by half with more nuanced tribal beats- it would sound like the Howl. Same with Death Comes Ripping- play it at the Howl speed and there you go. Samhain to Earth AD? Take out the drums and replace them with faster, less nuanced Robo drums. The guitars by default become more straightforward and less nuanced by having to speed up and match the drums. Eerie said Mother originally used to be fast. Imagine that! Lastly Lord's of the Left hand- the two different versions. The speed and the drum rhythm difference between the two really showcase how different a song can sound just by changing drums.
You described this so perfectly that I could hear it in my head! Thank you. I would be so floored to hear some demo or taped practice with Mother sped up. Always been a huge fan of the original Lords of the Lefthand.

I could imagine ALL the Samhain material on Earth A.D. The only difference between The Misfits and Samhain is the band. The Misfits were a wrecking ball, bullet train of a band from playing tons of live gigs where as Samhain was thrown together with whoever Glenn could find. I think he felt he could put his vocals over whatever he wanted and it would turn out killer... which is kinda true
Back in the 80s and 90s, Glenn slagged Earth AD pretty much non stop. The speed of the songs he really disliked the most. This paraphrased Glenn quote that i remembered sets the tone... "To me, the Misfits were always ahead of the times. On Earth AD we became the exact time when that album was recorded". I remember Glenn too was pissed at Metallica for choosing an Earth AD song for "Garage Days". I personally love the album but can do without Spot and his always sludgey production.
I like Earth A.D. it gets alot of flack. It was my introduction to the Misfits in 85. It's a noisy Hardcore Record. The thing about Earth A.D. the tape machine blew up according to SPOT. Then it got mixed elsewhere but I like the messy sound. It was written when Hardcore was a newer style and this is their attempt of doing a faster angrier record.
"Bloodfeast" being meant for Samhain absolutely rings true, imo. The others, not as much (tho I'm not implying they weren't). Archangel could never be on Earth A,D.
Earth AD is Glenn losing control of the band. Doyle was what 18 when they recorded it? He was a kid. He took Jerry's lead. Making everything faster and more distorted with their "wall of sound" Jerry has been quoted that he wanted everything fast like Motörhead. He liked Ace of Spades. They had no input on the lyrics or the writing of the songs so they seized control of how they are played and recorded. Which was shit. Fast, heavy, and distorted. I think if the band stayed together this recording would not have been the official release. Glenn release it after they broke up. It's all he had. Glenn has been quoted recently saying they have been talking about recording something with Doyle and Jerry. I'd love to hear them reboot this album. They should have recorded it with production like Walk Among Us. Maybe I'm wrong, but they probably recorded this for free.
Wow, spot on observation: He did lose control of the band with Earth A.D. I never thought about it in that kind of way. I like the way it sounds, but I would KILL for a remaster, that we will never get. Even more so: I'd love to hear what it sounded like before Glenn remixed it.
What is great about Earth AD is that Jerry and Doyle "Glenn proofed" it. There was no way Glenn could have re-done almost anything on that album. Maybe Bloodfeast. The guitars were too fast and hard for Glenn! Doyle really came into his own as a technician. The guitars were on a different level beyond Glenn's capability.
Uhh...Earth AD/Wolf's Blood is not exactly one of my favorites. It's in the middle of the pack. I like enough of the songs to buy it eventually, it's just not on the top of my wishlist. I enjoy Die Die My Darling, Green Hell, Devilock, Bloodfeast, Wolf's Blood, and Death Comes Ripping. I like Mommy Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight? But it'll never be among my tops.
your right about earth a.d.like an accidental train wreck .that was maybe a practice session before the real recording?always thought they were sloppy as fuck live.samhain had better live stuff then misfits.peak danzig live stuff was the tour for 1st danzig album.had alot of samhain lingering
But it can't be denied that they are so in sync with each other - complete alignment during the tracking of Earth A.D. as it was recorded live, and they are locked in perfectly.
You know what influenced the speed of EAD- SPEED! Isn't it we'll know the brothers were into that during the last days back then? Funny bc Motorhead being mentioned; Lemmy is on record saying how the Motorhead sound came due to use of speed( the reason he got kicked out of Hawkwind). Guess the same goes for the creation of EAD and why those guys were rolling and Glenn was " sleeping." I do prefer listening to those EAD * demo* pre- mix live recordings. However with today's technology, I'd think someone could take the EAD recordings and digitally re- master them( mess with the eq and get rid of background noise).
I see a lot of talk about this DIY mastering after the fact. It's true you can tweak little things etc. But you can't really do anything without masters and the individual tracks. Tech is getting better though and after the fact improvements can be made. But it's also like grinding up crackers into dust and using them to make dough and then baking bread with it. Not the same.
@@Frumess I heard, he said no one else said it like that, but Danzig, it's his band, his lyrics, his creation, it's sow-win not Sam-Hain. It doesn't sound better, it sounds like a rando name and like you're an ignorant poser.
There's nothing to be confused about it. It is the progression and metamorphosis of the Misfits which turns into the American hardcore era of 1980 and 83. They're simply talented and badass in every way. This podcast guy is a nerd!!!!

Personally I like it chaotic but i get why he was pissed. It was NOT the vision.
Ironically they play it all fast now anyway. You KNOW Dave Lombardo can do what Glenn originally wanted. Oh well.
Thought Archangel was originally written for The Damned, think I've read it somewhere but I might be wrong
Yes,but for a Dave Vanian solo release.
I don't think he had Samhain in mind when he wrote that. I think it indeed was for a Damned song maybe?
@Andrew Hollingshead Archangel? I don't think he ever considered it for a misfits project. Jerry didn't write it, but he did play bass.
@Andrew Hollingshead I believe Dave sat on it and didn't use it until The Damned was having one of the normal "hiatus' " they would have every few years and recorded it during his Phantom Chords project
@@aaronstepien2363 I don't think Dave ever recorded it, or if he did, it wasn't released. He went to Jerry's garage to go through it several times is what I read.
"It sounded like fucking Motorhead on fuckin' speed" uhhhhmmmmm
😂
It's kind of like sitting at home watching old black and white horror movies with svengoolie and then going to the cinema and seeing the evil Dead
um, yes!
I feel like zombeast could do earth ad tracks as Samhain really well 😂
Yes they would do a great job. They understand this stuff enough that would take it seriously and wield the right sensibilities with the utmost care.
Awwww damn look who I’m bumping into on the interwebs! What’s up Rikk!
13:34 - I always thought of "All Murder, All Guts, all Fun" as in the same wheelhouse as "Brain Eaters" - they both speak to the comical and light-hearted side of Glenn's dark nature.
Glens on the instrumental tracking of Mommy for timing reference during the pause
Scratch vocal.
For me, this was their best effort and a great counter to the equally great and doom laden Samhain.
A lot of fans don't connect with Earth A.D. but I think it is a masterpiece.
I would just say hardcore influenced earth AD . I think I remember kata calling that stuff horror core. I don't think it has goofy metal influence. I think it was just the next stage to go faster . Many of those punk rock bands like the dead Kennedys sped their music up from what it was. People seem to forget the term thrash when applied to music was a eterna for hardvore punk before im t had anything to do with metal. Again the dead Kennedys second album was referred to as that bad brains were called that and many of the second wave hardcore bands with initials were called that- it was a term for just playing extremely fast which was mostly associated with hardcore punk at the time. I call Earth AD a death thrash album ( I'm not speaking of that term with a metal mentality either bands like Kreator and slayer) but there are other bands of hardcore I would put into the horrorcore /death thrash catagory. Many of them misfits fans as well. Those bands are septic death, negative gain, and YDi they all had similar horror like themes and played extremely fast hardcore music
Thank you for this thoughtful discourse🤘🎃
Loved this record on the first listen
🤘😎🤘
Glenn fell asleep and Jerry and Doyle stole one of his pies from the windowsill, too.
Great take, John. And interesting observation about Danzig I: Not for slam dancing, but very raw and powerful.
robo and spot are why EARTH AD is superb.
A contributing factor, yes. But not the total reason. Actually, I think Jerry and Doyle and their penchant for heavy metal played a large part..
@@Frumess robo's style of drumming is 100 times more aggressive than anyone else that ever occupied the seat. as a result the music was driven much harder.
@@RavnerRavner Totally a factor. One of many.
What? It's recorded like shit. It could have been a 10,000X better record with better production, vocals mixed properly etc.. As it is, Spot's production is barely passable and just makes me try to image how much better it could have sounded with a more capable engineer.
Now you gotta interview Spot!
Oh man, I'd love that.
As far as the extra 4 more songs initially intended for Samhain, I'm not able to VERIFY the validity of that however I don't have any doubts about it because I have been a long time fan of Danzig in general.
Not a fan of Earth AD, but I'm more punk than metal. Maybe I should give it another listen tho
There is nothing metal about Earth A.D. - it's a ferocious onslaught! Definitely give another shot.
Both are wonderful, but for me the apex of that band was Earth A.D.
Also the pinnacle of the Misfits sheer brutality!
The interviews are really fun to look through.
If you look at it, though, they were still ahead of their time even playing fast. So many speed and thrash bands cite Earth AD as a big influence.
Then you listen to Lords OT lefthand and ur "right on"
Weird to consider, but yea - all those songs are drum machine except for one.
I never heard Jerry and Doyle's stuff after earth ad.did it sound like earth ad type energy?
Just search for Kryst the Conqueror on youtube. You will see.
@@Frumess cool thanks man .buddy of mine told me to look them up too
Nah, sounded more like Iron maiden.
@@cepolt they should put it out on limited vinyl. It would sell out fast.
Did that book about Spot ever come out, and if so did he talk at length about Earth AD?
The photo book?
@@Frumess The one that's mention here in this vid. Someone had said that there wa s abook coming out about Spot. Check @ 5:02.
@@harryanderson7282 ah, right! No one ever got back to me about that. But I do know that Spot has a photo book... maybe there is some overlap?
Hey does anyone have any info on recent releases of Earth AD being 45 rpm as opposed to 33rpm!? Someone claimed they got one- I want one! But if that's true I'm wondering if there's a way to determine this before buying any random new pressing of EAD.
That's so bizarre! What is the reasoning behind going from 33 to 45?
@@Frumess I'm assuming that it would sound better? I have no idea
@@cepolt Either a fidelity thing or a real estate thing... It could have to do with the circumference. I wish I know more about this stuff.
Found the listing on Discogs! Came out last year. There's no way to really tell until it's opened. Messaged every seller on Discogs to make sure- verified after opening. Didn't want to buy a bunch only to realize it's not 45 rpm.
@@cepolt interesting! please report back your findings.
I worked for them for many years. Hardcare became trendy so thats the way whey went. They broke up about a year before the album came out. Robot did a different kind of drumming
You worked for the Misfits?
77-83? Or 95+?
Green Hell, I couldn't see any way other than as it was on Earth A.D.
Which makes me want to hear it in a different way all the more!
Cancerslug did a fucking awesome cover of archangel/all murder all guts medley

@@Frumess Planning on finishing this project this week. 17 songs - 10 from EarthAD/Die Die My Darling done in the style of Samhain's Initium and 7 from Initium done in the style of Misfits EarthAD. The only ones I left off were the ones we've all heard both The Misfits and Samhain play before. I studied both albums to pick up on the details that make them different, and then I applied these to the opposite songs - so I kinda had to unlearn and relearn how to play these. Very interesting experience🤘 How the hell I'd be able to let anyone hear it without copyright strikes, I'm not sure (unless this would be an example of Fair Use), but I definitely want you to hear it when it's done - just in time for Halloween! Those make the song rule in my book . Love them!
What?! Those are what make the song. Man good thing you're not a song writer.
But could you imagine the Earth A.D. material on Initium?
Don't know about that take. Samhain is far more musically interesting to me.
I always wanted to know how Googy got kicked out of the band .. I remember Doyle mentioned his departure of the group
There is actually another video on this channel that tackles that very subject- with visuals! Seek it out
Something about a burger
Back in the 80s and 90s, Glenn slagged Earth AD pretty much non stop. The speed of the songs he really disliked the most. This paraphrased Glenn quote that i remembered sets the tone... "To me, the Misfits were always ahead of the times. On Earth AD we became the exact time when that album was recorded". I remember Glenn too was pissed at Metallica for choosing an Earth AD song for "Garage Days". I personally love the album but can do without Spot and his always sludgey production.
It's a masterpiece. You should watch the Initium A.D. episode on here.
It does get flack and it shouldn't!
"Bloodfeast" being meant for Samhain absolutely rings true, imo. The others, not as much (tho I'm not implying they weren't). Archangel could never be on Earth A,D.
Earth ad is most likely the best music
It's so great
Frumes, take a listen to the songs at a faster bpm here... ruclips.net/video/ZJSGoTCtf00/видео.html

I prefer the Earth AD demos over the finished product. Spot as a producer is okay, lot of heavy guitars but vocals are drowned out.
I want nothing more than to hear a remastered Earth A.D.
6:55.... I thought thaley were talkin DEMONOMANIA lmad
My father was a wolf.
@@daggerlove9304 😂😂😂 its like Paul McCartney secretly rewriting Abbey Road songs with the bass line subversively...😂😂😂
Who is spot?
I have a whole video about him on this channel. Watch it! RIP SPOT!!!
Glenn sleeping would be a good idea to rest his vocals.

But it can't be denied that they are so in sync with each other - complete alignment during the tracking of Earth A.D. as it was recorded live, and they are locked in perfectly.
@@Frumess true.especially green he'll.playing that in our old band.its pretty cool locking in on that song.

Check out misfits 12 hits from hell. That is earth ad basically raw. Like only says
So confused. Can you explain what you mean?
Isn’t the statement “Motörhead on speed” and oxymoron?

You know Danzig pronounces samhain correctly in song lyrics etc...why do you refuse to?
i dunno... Check out what Eerie has to say on his interview on this channel.
