A.I is annoying, I don't want Google shuffling all my photos around and organizing it the way it feels is the best and identifying people and places and stuff. I just want to make my own folders and drag and drop stuff.
I totally agree. Call it, what you will, but It's all about info harvesting formats increasing control. And as of 1/2023, Google holds our photos for ransom .. We have to pay for the app, to have Google release THAT, WHICH IS OURS! Some of the suggested alternatives are worth considering
Agreed. I have three dogs that are the same breed, AI recognizes them as the same, so if I want to view a photo of my deceased dog, I can't sort her from the other photos.
Thank you SO much for taking time to post this. I just got a new 2021 Motorola Gpower with Google photos, and have been reasonably unhappy so far. I really dislike that we cannot get rid of the Print Store in Libraries. But I can at least organize my photos a little better now thanks to you.
I have my Google photos synced, however, I'm trying to free up space on my phone/gallery. When I delete it from my gallery/camera it also deletes it from my Google photos app? Am I missing something here?
I could be wrong, but here's what may be happening to you because it happened to me. I was using the native Gallery app on my Android phone to organize/move my photos into certain albums (which are really just device folders). When I would then open the Google Photos app on my phone, I'd see those groups of folders with the same titles I had given them in the Gallery app. But those are not ALBUMS in the Google Photos app. I then needed to create Albums, but I didn't know this for a while, though. So when I would delete a folder (album) from the phone's Gallery app, I would notice that same-titled folder was now gone from the Photos app. I KNEW I had backed up all my photos but didn't understand where the folder went. Turns out, the photos were still in my Google Photos app, but just in chronological order. When I deleted the device folder "album" from my phone, it also deleted the folder from the Google Photos app but not the photos inside. They were still there, just in chronological order. So, what I should've been doing all along, was using the Google Photos app to create albums and organize my photos. The part that had confused me all along is that my phone's Gallery app calls the folders with the photos "albums" but they are really device folders. Creating an album in the Gallery app does not create an Album in Photos.
All you need to do is , in Google photo app, click on your profile icon, it will start backing up the photos and it will tell you when it's done loading them. Set all Google photo settings to your liking too

A couple questions: 1. if your goal is to primarily upload and share slide shows, can you set things up so only those photos are uploaded (ie: from your mac/pc) ? 2. if you wish to invite someone to access your slide show, do they have to have a Google account? 3. when someone is viewing your slide show, can they manage it in any way (ie: speed). YES , actually tonight I was busy with google lens for the first time , I found it if I delete a photo from regular gallery , automatically will be deleted from google photo app too.... btw my phone is LG aristo android metro t-mobile...btw why don't you take a picture randomly and then test it for yourself ?
As of June 2021 Google no longer offers total free storage to lower grade photos. All photos now uploaded to Google photos are counted in your 15Gbyte free limit regardless of their resolution or size and will be counted. You can manage photos and have them reduced in quality but they will still be counted in your storage and when you reach 15 Gbyte will need to upgrade and pay for it..

Also if I want to delete photos from my phone will they disappear from my Google photo album? I currently use iCloud backup , Amazon Prime photo (as I am a prime member and storage is unlimited) as well as Google Photo. Which of these three do you prefer? I've had this message on my Google Photos app saying "1461 items to delete from this device" but I've been scared to actually do it because it didn't seem to give me the ability to review the items before deleting.

Sometimes I take photos of sensitive information, scan documents via the camera, screenshots, etc. that I don't want to back up. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to exclude an album from google photos for auto-backup. So I'm stuck clicking each photo to back up, then when I go to delete them "from this device" it says they aren't backed up, although indeed they are. Is there a way that this can back up photos from messages, notes, etc.? Or a way to exclude an album? I'm thinking I'll delete those photos from my phone, then turn on backup and sync. Then turn it off again and re-save the excluded photos. Anyway, any insight is greatly appreciated!
If you have Google photos installed you forfeit any and all privacy your phone once had. Download all backed up photos from Google and then uninstal the app. Then take your private photos and never install the app again. Cause as soon as you do, it will access and upload your private photos.

Anyone who has access to your phone will also have access to your google photos And to your Locked folder inside Google photos. The only thing this app does is to upload the photos to the cloud server under your Google account and it uses the same biometrics/password/pin set up for your phone in order to access the account. What this app hides is your photos from other non-google apps. Google itself can view each and every photo backed up to its servers without need to access your phone directly. In short, if you have any photos you want hidden then DO NOT USE OR INSTALL GOOGLE PHOTOS!!! Once installed it will automatically scan and back up to its servers every photo you have. If you want to keep anything private, use the android hidden folder instead, but be aware that 1. this uses up main memory and cannot be moved to an SD card, and 2. as soon as photos are removed from the hidden folder (such as to offload to a computer), Google photos will detect it and immediately upload to the cloud if it is still installed.
If I delete a photo on the app will it delete it on the device too? What about on an external hard drive. If If i delete the photo on the device will it delete it from the app? Is there a setting that will prevent it from being deleted on the device if so or the hardrive?
Moving a photo to an external location to which Google photos does not have access and then deleting the photo from Google photos will, of course, not delete the photo from your other location. It will, however, delete the photo from your phone since the app has access to your phone. That said, under Utilities there is a Free Up Space option that will remove all photos on your phone that are already backed up on the Google servers. There is also a Delete From Device option for each photo that will do this for each individual photo. There is a way of removing photos from the Google photos server while keeping them on the phone and not using an external location. If you move the photos on the device to the Android Secure Folder then Google will not have access to the file on the phone when it is deleted from their server. Look into how to set that up if you want to "protect" your photos from Google deletion.
I'm generally pretty tech savvy and been using Google (Android) based devices since 2010. One thing I can't get so far though is the whole syncing and displaying on the Photos Website. I am syncing my current phone (Samsung S20 Ultra) in preparation for my new S22 Ultra since I no longer have use of a memory card. My main thing is that when I pull up the Photos app on my phone, I can see my entire library, including all my custom folders I have in my Samsung Gallery (France Album, London Album, San Francisco, Food, etc.). When I pull up the website though I have Zero Albums and the website prompts me to create my own album. I selected the option to backup all my folders on my gallery (not just my camera), but am yet to see anything on the website. Really hoping since I literally JUST did this today, and my Google Account on my phone says I still have around 17k items to backup, that there is a delay? I also notice that not all my albums on my Photos App on my phone are 100% backed up yet either, so hoping that may be the case and I need to wait longer. Going to be a bit disappointed if I don't have the albums pre-made and sorted on the website version of Photos when logged in to my Gmail account. Wasn't sure if you could advise at all?
This app has been causing me a problem recently that I really hope someone knows how to solve. I downloaded it to save storage on my IPhone because my regular Photos app takes up so much storage. How do you share photos or albums to Instagram and RUclips? When you touched the share icon at around 11:42, your phone shows the Instagram icon. Mine doesn't. It only allows me to share with Facebook and Twitter 😕 Thanks
It's close to amazing, but far enough that it really isn't a tool that you can use exclusively. Organizing your photos is nearly impossible. You can make albums sure, but they still appear on the main list so you never know whether it has been filed into an album or not. EVERY photo or screenshot you take on your phone appears in Google Photo which is problematic from a privacy POV, but also quickly fills your storage, and again makes organizing challenging.
I got a new smartphone since I lost my previous smartphone at a party .Now I'm trying to recover all of my old photos and videos which I had on my previous device which I haved backup onto google photos .I logged into the google account which I used to do all this on my old phone and my media content that I had backup ain't showing on my new device I tried waiting it out since it takes time but it been almost 24 hours still nothing is showing on my app what should I do

I just don't understand why you can create albums but also folders and if I move something into a folder or messes up the gallery also it said that a lot of my photos are double saved. Google photos does not save you any space on your phone. If you delete it from your phone, it is deleted on google photos. And they do charge, the storage is not unlimited. Basically you can decide if you want to give your money to iCloud or give it to google photos.

I have a Samsung Galaxy A 53 5G phone. After my last software update, I find I am unable to share my photos directly, with say, Facebook. Prior to the last s/w update, I could easily share my photos. I don't know what changed, but I find this glitch annoying. I tried changing my various app permissions, still nothing.

If that's a problem for you, you'd be better off getting a USB hard drive and copying your photos to that as a backup instead.

Me too, when I think I moved all pics and videos on google photos, i would delete them on my device and it will be deleted on google photo too

I've had this message on my Google Photos app saying "1461 items to delete from this device" but I've been scared to actually do it because it didn't seem to give me the ability to review the items before deleting.
Once photo is in Google photo can I delete it from my photo gallery. Or will deleting it from my gallery also delete it from Google? I have an Samsung phone if it matters. Thanks for this video. Very helpful.
Hi I noticed when I delete a picture from my picture roll on the phone, it deletes from Google photos too. I want to be able to delete pictures from my phone, but keep it on Google photos. How can I do that? I downloaded Google photos to free up space on my picture roll. Thanks!
Sometimes I take photos of sensitive information, scan documents via the camera, screenshots, etc. that I don't want to back up. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to exclude an album from google photos for auto-backup. So I'm stuck clicking each photo to back up, then when I go to delete them "from this device" it says they aren't backed up, although indeed they are. Is there a way that this can back up photos from messages, notes, etc.? Or a way to exclude an album? I'm thinking I'll delete those photos from my phone, then turn on backup and sync. Then turn it off again and re-save the excluded photos. Anyway, any insight is greatly appreciated!
Get an app to scan documents and in Google photos don't select that folder for backup
If you have Google photos installed you forfeit any and all privacy your phone once had. Download all backed up photos from Google and then uninstal the app. Then take your private photos and never install the app again. Cause as soon as you do, it will access and upload your private photos.

You explanation is great! I have the app since 2015, 2021 & 2022 I stopped backup on the app on my phone. When I restart the phone app will it give me all the old pictures again? If so how do you easily get rid of duplicates?

Just you and the Government have access to your photos.
Anyone who has access to your phone will also have access to your google photos And to your Locked folder inside Google photos.
The only thing this app does is to upload the photos to the cloud server under your Google account and it uses the same biometrics/password/pin set up for your phone in order to access the account.
What this app hides is your photos from other non-google apps. Google itself can view each and every photo backed up to its servers without need to access your phone directly.
In short, if you have any photos you want hidden then DO NOT USE OR INSTALL GOOGLE PHOTOS!!! Once installed it will automatically scan and back up to its servers every photo you have.
If you want to keep anything private, use the android hidden folder instead, but be aware that 1. this uses up main memory and cannot be moved to an SD card, and 2. as soon as photos are removed from the hidden folder (such as to offload to a computer), Google photos will detect it and immediately upload to the cloud if it is still installed.
If I delete a photo on the app will it delete it on the device too? What about on an external hard drive. If If i delete the photo on the device will it delete it from the app? Is there a setting that will prevent it from being deleted on the device if so or the hardrive?
Moving a photo to an external location to which Google photos does not have access and then deleting the photo from Google photos will, of course, not delete the photo from your other location. It will, however, delete the photo from your phone since the app has access to your phone.
That said, under Utilities there is a Free Up Space option that will remove all photos on your phone that are already backed up on the Google servers. There is also a Delete From Device option for each photo that will do this for each individual photo.
There is a way of removing photos from the Google photos server while keeping them on the phone and not using an external location. If you move the photos on the device to the Android Secure Folder then Google will not have access to the file on the phone when it is deleted from their server. Look into how to set that up if you want to "protect" your photos from Google deletion.

I'm generally pretty tech savvy and been using Google (Android) based devices since 2010. One thing I can't get so far though is the whole syncing and displaying on the Photos Website. I am syncing my current phone (Samsung S20 Ultra) in preparation for my new S22 Ultra since I no longer have use of a memory card. My main thing is that when I pull up the Photos app on my phone, I can see my entire library, including all my custom folders I have in my Samsung Gallery (France Album, London Album, San Francisco, Food, etc.). When I pull up the website though I have Zero Albums and the website prompts me to create my own album.
I selected the option to backup all my folders on my gallery (not just my camera), but am yet to see anything on the website. Really hoping since I literally JUST did this today, and my Google Account on my phone says I still have around 17k items to backup, that there is a delay? I also notice that not all my albums on my Photos App on my phone are 100% backed up yet either, so hoping that may be the case and I need to wait longer. Going to be a bit disappointed if I don't have the albums pre-made and sorted on the website version of Photos when logged in to my Gmail account. Wasn't sure if you could advise at all?

This app has been causing me a problem recently that I really hope someone knows how to solve. I downloaded it to save storage on my IPhone because my regular Photos app takes up so much storage.
However, when I delete a photo on my regular Photos app, it also deletes on my Google Photos app. Is this what’s supposed to happen or am I missing something here?

I'm out of space on Google photos. How do I only see photos in cloud and not on device? I want to delete photos from Google cloud ONLY not my device too. But every time I try to delete, it asks "delete from cloud and syncs device" No just cloud. I tried turning off sync access and then I try to open photos it demands access to photos.

Hi great video although i have just downloaded the app and now Google charges once you reach 15gb no matter what resolution you use so it is not free any longer.
So I just signed into my google photos on my phone and selected "do not backup" but through the google photos app, I can see all the photos that are on my phone, so am I correct in assuming that google photos has access to your phones photos and if so, how can i disable it and not have every photo in my phone turn up in google photos?

I have an important question. I want to have only my photos captured by my smartphone camera displayed in the home feed of google photos or at least in an album. In my One Plus 7 Pro (idk wich android it runs on currentyl but i will edit the commen later) its exactly like that. Screenshots are in the screenshots folder, whatsapp photos etc are in their on folder as well. Now I have a Xiaomi 13T and I don't see an option for this. Thank you for this video. I'm just learning and this has given me something to move forward with.
It's close to amazing, but far enough that it really isn't a tool that you can use exclusively. Organizing your photos is nearly impossible. You can make albums sure, but they still appear on the main list so you never know whether it has been filed into an album or not. EVERY photo or screenshot you take on your phone appears in Google Photo which is problematic from a privacy POV, but also quickly fills your storage, and again makes organizing challenging.
disable the auto backup option and upload selected photos only every few months. All features at minimum efforts.

I got a new smartphone since I lost my previous smartphone at a party .Now I'm trying to recover all of my old photos and videos which I had on my previous device which I haved backup onto google photos .I logged into the google account which I used to do all this on my old phone and my media content that I had backup ain't showing on my new device I tried waiting it out since it takes time but it been almost 24 hours still nothing is showing on my app what should I do

If google has my photos, GOOGLE HAS MY PHOTOS! I can't help but believe they would one day use that against me, lose them or share them. Maybe a security breach.. happens all the time.
I just don't understand why you can create albums but also folders and if I move something into a folder or messes up the gallery also it said that a lot of my photos are double saved. Maybe I need to say that I have a Google pixel and this was the only gallery app I have in the first place. Also what does archive mean?

Can you help please? When I delete photo from Google photo on my desktop I get a notification on my phone and then I also delete them on my phone. I thought this would work vice versa but when I deleted a bunch of photos from my photo they didn't not delete from my Google photo on my desktop. I would really rather not have to go through all my photos again and delete unwanted photos. How can I sync them together in both directions sorta say.

When I upload a photo from my computer, will it organize it by date of upload or date the photo was taken? I notice when it "backs up" my phone gallery it puts photos taken from my phone in one place and photos that I've uploaded from emails sent to me in another. I wish they were all in one place!

Google photos does not save you any space on your phone. If you delete it from your phone, it is deleted on google photos. And they do charge, the storage is not unlimited. Basically you can decide if you want to give your money to iCloud or give it to google photos.

Any photo that has been backed up stays in the cloud forever until you manually delete it from google photos.
I have a Samsung Galaxy A 53 5G phone. After my last software update, I find I am unable to share my photos directly, with say, Facebook. Prior to the last s/w update, I could easily share my photos. I don't know what changed, but I find this glitch annoying.
I tried changing my various app permissions, still nothing.
