Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
see mom, if sampha’s albums turn out this good, it’s okay that I take 3 months to write my college essays
Is this miles morales?
@@Poliosupplementsthe exaggerated swagger of a black teen
I wish I could say the same but in reality I talk about it for 3 months and then start writing it 2 days before the deadline. (right now actually i gotta turn this in on friday dang)

Jonathan L. Seagull is probably my SOTY. It's so beautiful! Amazing album overall
The vocal runs in the verses, the intro/outro, the drums and bass kicking in midway, the lyrics 😩 it’s so good
Agreed
This song makes me float!! I can’t wait to hear it live.
hard agree. it's everything i hoped would be on this record
My fav too
Suspended is one of the most sonically satisfying songs of this year. Such cool production, vocals are clear, glitches are there, piano keys running around... so cool. Can't stop myself from listening to it
not to mention the amazing songwriting!
suspeeeeeeeeeeeennnndeeeeAaAaAaAaAaAa 🗣️🗣️
That second chorus 😩😩😩😩
Only gotten through half of the album so far but suspended was an obvious standout for me immediately.
agreed 🥹🙌🏾
Jonathan L. Seagull blew my mind. Definitely a candidate for song of the year
Dancing Circles got me actually hypnotized, heard the song on a loop for hours.
Bro same. It’s a great song!
it’s insane live
ı listened this on a walk by seaside while the sun set and it literally healed my soul.gorgeous album
that is the optimal way to listen to this album
Great album, and what makes it so amazing to me is that there's no other artist making music that scratches this itch. It's so singularly Sampha's vision, I love that.
check out Jordan Rakei's Origin, then check out Tom Misch's What Kinda Music
Those are my exact feelings on Sampha. It’s insane how his music feels like you could possibly put it in a category but no one else would be in that category.
Check out Nothing Was The Same by Drake or Channel Orange by Frank Ocean.
Listen to Winning London (Music from the Motion Picture) and How To Love by Lil Wayne
@@phothewin6019what …
Sampha and D'angelo are proof to me that good art should take its time. Doing art on a business schedule really makes art mediocre.
Love the D'angelo analogy. My thoughts exactly
@@Loser4yea
I don't agree with that, saying good art SHOULD take time is putting rules on art. There is no SHOULD when it come to art. It doesn't need to 10 years to be considered good art nor 10 days. If this album was made in a month it'd be just as good as it is now and for me the artistic value wouldn't change because everyones creative process is different
Yeah, that is true for a lot cases, but then there are also people like Frank Zappa who released around 60 albums in his life time and most of them were beautiful art
zappa the goat@@isaiahbarkat8692
Album of year for me so far. The production on this thing is so uniquely beautiful
Sampha is like frank ocean if he wasn't completely absent from the music industry
+ more talented
@@Arcticneo_ certified L take
He’s like Frank Ocean, but I don’t have to pretend to like his stuff.
There both good and equally as consistent in releasing albums (both have 2 in 15yrs)
@@Arcticneo_ they have the same amount of talent imo
Just because Sampha hypnotized you, doesn’t mean you can take off a point.
Nobody should be comparing Sampha to frank. People who say anything along the lines of “I no longer need to wait for franks album this scratched that itch” are totally disrespecting sampha. He is nothing like frank ocean and his music is completely different he shouldn’t only be the guy that holds you over while you wait for franks album.
it’s mad annoying but just shows ppl’s level of maturity or lack thereof when it comes to consuming music
The comparison is not surprising and in a way it does scratch an itch (given both artists are in similar realms genre-wise though completely different own lanes). If Frank ocean dropped, but Sampha hasn’t in so many years, then he’s album would probably scratch an itch. I’m a fan of both but to say they are “nothing” alike, is a bit dramatic
Absolutely agree with this comment. No disrespect to Frank, but they are nothing alike and does a disservice to how great Sampha is and Sampha stands on his own.
Yup, there’s a reason why hardly anyone knows who Sampha is
Friendship ended with Frank, sampha is my new best friend 😀👍
I was scared of this not living up to his debut... but its so beautiful. Sampha is truly a living legend.
Process was one of my favorite albums of all time. This was such a worthy follow up, and Dancing Circles is my favorite track this year. I do wish he went in a slightly different direction though- songs like Plastic 100°C and Blood on Me have such a different sound / intensity that I LOVE, while a lot of his other songs are a bit softer in comparison. I love both styles though.
Love the Stevie Wonder parallel. The intersection of funk, jazz, electronic, and balladry on this record really reminds me of Wonder's classic period.
That SBTRKT record still holds up and was my intro to Sampha. Never got round to Process, but Lahai really surprised me, and I've found myself going back to it repeatedly. This deserves to be in end of year lists.
Please do yourself a favor and listen to Process, it's incredible
Bro you have to listen to Process, I still think it’s his best
Same lol I love SBTRKt and this Lahai is has futuristic electronic sound also
@@AverageVideoWatcher Just finished and immediately went back to Lahai. I definitely prefer the less-organic(?) sound of this record, and I think the cohesiveness is a lot tighter too. That said, I can see me going back to Process at some point though. Thanks for the push to finally get round to it!

Genuinely one of the best albums I’ve ever heard in my life and it hasn’t even been a week.
You can really feel Yussef Dayes’ influence on this record’s percussion. His drumming is just fantastic.
Just saw him in MPLS. Best instrumentalist I’ve seen live.
stole my spot for aoty just off the strength of the first listen. what an incredible record.
what was your original aoty contenders?
@noralie3295 i really enjoyed the patience by mick jenkins, beloved paradise jazz by mckinley dixon, and burning desire by mike
@@mezthegozUTOPIA ⁉️⁉️
@embermist3910ohh imagine having to show that for it to be valid for being an AOTY
Bought the vinyl which came before the digital released. Perfect way to have a first listen to such a beautiful album. After such a long time waiting it would’ve been easy to be disappointed but sampha is such a brilliant artist that it was somehow worth the 6 years.
Hope you grabbed the limted version. The 2 bonus tracks are absolutely as good as the whole album❤
@@leecourtney1225 yes thankfully I did. All the artwork and the lyric book are so cool to have as well.
Deserved rating. Amazing Album by Sampha
Rose Tint is better than an okay ending! The “It’s been a lifetime!” part with the staggered vocals is haunting. Love the attention to detail with the vocal layering throughout the album, like on Dancing Circles with the repeated phrases “On the north side” and “you know I love you though”
He gave it a Light 9 go back to your notes now
how am i supposed to know if the 9 is light, decent or strong?
Way ahead of you
Thanks man

Thank you for mentioning his work on SBTRKT’s projects. I had no idea about those tracks. It’s like I have two new Sampha albums to listen to now

If you play this album next to Mr Morale and the Big Steppers it really sounds beautiful because the themes are similar
Not to mention he’s featured in Father Time. Such a good back to back
I've have got to do this👌
@@bn_b12Father Time was how I first heard of him, and I can absolutely see he earned that Kendrick co-sign
@@samt3412well, considering what he did in Saint Pablo and Too Much, it’s not that surprising
I can’t get enough of Sampha I’m definitely getting a physical copy 😩 This & Scaring The Hoes are albums of the year for me.

A well-deserved comeback album
Ah yes, time for another album I am allowed to like this year. Thank you, Anthony.
in theory if sampha took an extra year to make this, it would’ve been a 10
The beat drop in inclination compass is one of the most sonically pleasing things I've heard in a long time
Damn what if you hypnotize me was one of my personal fav songs but awesome seeing such a high rating here!! Such an angelic record
I loved this album, definitely a strong 9 to a 10, but how is What If You Hypnotize Me the worst track? Especially that fade in almost where Lea Sen comes in and has some beautiful vocals, along with one of the lushest Sampha beats I’ve ever heard
Seriously it’s one of the best songs on the record in my opinion can’t believe he has it in worst section
Exactly what is he on? That hook is so infectious
You can always count on Fantano to put one of the best tracks of an album in his least favorite list!
I can’t get enough of his voice. I don’t know why, but it reminds me of a rich velvety dark chocolate.
Well…
Wow I see u take after melons racism
hmm
LMAO THIS IS NOT WHAT I MEANT 💀
What did he mean by this
Absolutely worth the wait, what a beautiful experience this album is
SBRKT is where I discovered Sampha years ago, and I'm so glad that I found him. His voice is pure gold, and the transitions from the piano and strings, into a vast electronic atmosphere. It''s so perfect. And he has Owen Pallett performing the strings and possibly some piano on the album, which is exciting. Owen Pallett is an absolute genius when it comes to string arrangements.
YES! I was patiently waiting for this review. I absolutely love the album. The first track already brings you in. Love it.
sampha is my favorite artist out of the uk right now, his sound is so unique and singular that i honestly cant help but listen to him because as somebody else said in these comments, he's really the only person scratching that itch
Rose Tint is a reprise of Inclination Compass, and Inclination Compass sounds like the kind of tune I wish I could remember dreaming after I wake up. It is almost too beautiful for this reality. What If You Hypnotise Me, Suspended, Spirit 2.0, Only and Can't Go Back are such beautiful bangers, I can't wait to see him live on Friday 1st of March in Melbourne!
sampha really is a once in a generation singer.
I was so absolutely blessed to see him live 2 days ago at Satellite Business. He is a true performer I got chills and goosebumps time and time again. He’s been one of my favorite artists for a while. I played process nonstop for just about 1 year and a half almost exclusively daily. I will definitely see him again if I have a chance
Just saw him in LA at the Palladium. Absolutely incredible show
Same here imma post some videos on my YT channel right now!
one of my favourite of the year for sure
This album is gorgeous, and it has not gotten the commercial love it deserves yet. Lahai is probably my favorite album of the year.
Great project. Sampha really doesn't miss.
i love this being a 9 but what if you hypnotise me being your worst track hurts
Waiting for your review gave me so much anxiety. Sampha deserves the very best and I'm glad you gave him a good score. He needs it and we missed him.
one of the best releases of the year its so pretty-sounding
If this was called “Kid Lahai: Reputation”, you would have gave it a ten.
I already have the album on vinyl. Imo its AOTY loved every second of it.
I got to see Sampha live this year and it was probably one of my favorite concerts ever. His voice and his presence were amazing and my favorite part is when he got into a drum circle with all the other musicians and jammed out. if you didn’t get to watch him live, at least go watch the tiny Dest performance it was amazing.
I’ve been following Sampha since that SBTRKT album came out in college and he does NOT miss. Incredible artist.
Great review Fantano, I liked how you described the beats. I wish you noted some more of the highlights like what makes Only so magical.
I love love love the subtle electronics and drum breaks under all the beautiful vocals. It's got such unique production and arrangement that has kept me listening to this album NONSTOP.
Dancing Circles was instantly one of the most infectious songs of the year for me. Loved a lot of this album, I can see myself listening to a lot of these tracks a lot to close out the year.
Ive had Sampha on my list of artists to check out for a while. Decided to cheat and listen to this album before his debut "Process". So got damn good lol. Has highs, while also not having any lows (skips). I dont have a favorite song, I have multiple, (so far) with those being "Stereo Colour Child", "Spirit 2.0", "Suspended", and "Only". This album (along with Genesis Owusu 's "Struggler"), is at the top of my album of the year list. Can't wait to hear what he'll have in store next.
Such a beautiful album man
i love how some tracks of this album hold back on the drums until later in the track
it just makes it more satisfying when they eventually come in
Sampha has been given to us by the big man upstairs to really show us what angels really sound like. I ascended to the great beyond listening to this.
We appreciate your reviews. We will always support you.
Sampha yet again coming thru and making a beautiful album.
I've never heard of this guy, but since you're talking about him so fondly I'll give him a listen
If the album was named La Pimp a Butterhai Fantano would have given it a 10
such an amazing album, i loved it through and through! hope the census designated review is next :)
Id never heard of Sampha before Kendrick's album last year, but he was definitely a standout there. But this album completely blew me away, this album will be something to return to for years and years
Those 6 years were worth it, definitely among the best albums of this year
seeing this magic man today at the palladium, sending energy to y'all
Beatiful record. Big up me main man El Guincho for co-producing the album.
Amazing to see El Guincho in the production credits of some songs here, that dude has had an amazing run getting involved with artists like FKA Twigs and Rosalía
Was so surprised by the sonic landcape and detail as well as the unique melodies when I heard it🔥
I liked the first half of this album more than the second half. Bit it was still a all around good listening experience. I love sampha's voice, and the best way I can describe his music is feel good tunes. I just instantly have good vibes when I put his music on. With all this being said, I'm going to give this album a strong 7/10. How does everybody else feel about it ?
Actually loved “what if you hypnotize me?”. Solid album 👌🏿
Bout fuckin time. 6 years I’ve been waiting
Fantano knew his life was on the line with this one.
I knew this was getting a 9. And I didn’t need to think about it too much.
Honestly what if you hypnotize me is one of my favourite cuts on the record. The intense piano just gets me man, but I guess that just shows how great the album is since someone's least favourite is still such a high
Please can you review to Ren's new album Sick Boi? It went straight in at number 1 in the UK charts this week, despite his being independent, and not having done any touring due to his undergoing medical treatment 5 days a week this year to combat the results of having had misdiagnosed Lyme disease for years. It's an incredible album, in my opinion. I'd love to hear what you think.
if this is a 9 then census designated may, in fact, be a 10. he’s been edging us all year for that
Last sentence is crazy
Was really disappointed by census designated ngl, glad you liked it tho
One of my favorites this year. Just beautiful through and through
It's been on repeat. I've waited so long and Sampha is one of the artists I always come back to. Def worth the wait as always. He's helped me through very hard times. Dancing Circles is my fave but I can't really pick just one, many good tracks on this album.
just came back here to say spirit 2.0 is one of the greatest songs ever written :)
a NINE???? such a W, Melon 🐐
I was just listening this album and was wondering if you uploaded a review yet. Looked up fantano sampha to hear your reactions on stream. Love love love this album. I'm seeing him Nov 9th in nyc
This album was insane first listen and my first time hearing something from Sampha goated album
I’ve been replaying the album since its release, it’s so good 😁😁
What If You Hypnotize Me was duly underappreciated by you. Best on the album.
The inevitable review I was waiting for
Love that Anthony throws in a “cuz” here and there, had no idea he records all these videos for his cousin
If you enjoy Sampha but want more terms of composition I'd recommend serpentwithfeet's record Soil
Dancing Circles sounds like Randy Orton’s old entrance when he used to have that glittering pyro as the Intercontinental Champion!
loved the album
I love Sampha thank you for doing a review
This is my favorite review from Melon. He worded all of my thoughts exactly. Excellent Review.
enjoyed Process slightly more but this album is great too, really enjoyed it, especially the first six tracks
Will you be reviewing the remaster of the ghost pop tape?
helllll yesssss!! At first i'll be honest i was like damn I'm loving the beginning of this album...and it's kind of losing my attention later down the tracklist. But the more i listen back - pretty much every song is a banger! I love sampha. I'm glad fellow Melon fans do too
This album is that vibe that ends the year great even though we got 2 more months I’m stopping with this album it’s better than “process” that’s a plus thank you for the rating this deserves melon
Lahai is lyrically superior to its predecessor. Especially on “inclination compass(tenderness)”. One of my top 3 LPs of 2023
This and the new Caroline Polachek are my albums of the year. Well worth the wait.
Sampha is a genius. This album is evidence enough. It’s such an intricate and emotional masterpiece from front to back
