He is a Greek god who travelled to Midgard and became a Norse deity. Mimir is in a similar boat, because he's actually Celtic: he's actually called Puck, and comes from a Shakespeare play ( a Midsummer Night's Dream I think ). The fairy king he mentions is Oberon.
In the game lore Mimir was an old Goodfellow serving king Oberon until his pranks left him no choice but to leave his homeland and become Odin's advisor.
Probably the closest we'll ever get to humor from Kratos.
