The aft sponsons are more for floatation as the boat sits waiting to launch. There is some speculation that they may cause some of the front to back rocking the boat suffers from as it runs down the track. This hull is directly designed from a R/C boat, which typically make right turns. On an R/C boat, they are crucial to keeping the tail up in the turns. Watch some of our other videos, and all of the top fuel hydros other than this style "Leap" out of the water, this boat does not.
That is interesting. Full-size circuit racing hydros don't need aft sponsons, either, But the design of the fin is really important... Scaling is very tricky with boats because resistance, stability, strength, and vibration all scale differently. So you can't simply scale up or down....you have to adjust stuff...
TOXIC ROCKET seems to have a unique hull design. It also seems to stay level when it hooks up, rather than torquing over. But what's the purpose of the aft sponsons? It looks like they are coming into play but why? That seems like a source of drag--isn't she prop riding like all other hydroplanes?
Of course the water has to be "near perfect glass" for these boats to safely race. Does anyone know at what point the race day is called off from too much wind/ripple on the water?
+sunking2001 Actually near perfect glass as you state is NOT ideal.Or so I saw somewhere. They actually have more control with a little chop in the water.
+sunking2001. Perfect glass makes for great photos, but not the potential for record setting numbers. They do require water with no wakes or rollers. A slight chop on the water is best so that the running surface of the boat doesn't cause any suction.
+dboatscom I understand what you mean. I did write "near perfect"...not "perfect"... describing the water in the race above. I'm wondering at what point is it "too choppy" to race these boats and how it is measured.
+Flatline Heartbeat I described...in my own words that the water in this race...to me...is "near perfect." Perfect water to me is like a sheet of glass. Obviously, the water in this race is not a "sheet of glass." Sheesh!!

I've never been to a drag race (on land nor a drag boat race), but I bet no matter what catching a 300+ mph dragster or a 250 mph drag boat it's hard to keep a steady shot with any kind of camera. dboatscom, I know you'll have to agree with me on that.
Hehe. polybun... Sounds like a Lithuanian baker... Did he come here to find the beef? Cuz this video is full of it! Thumbs up to the Redbull of boats, and long life to the select few gifted enough to skip 'er! Anybody wanna start a cash pool to invite the baker over for a show? Hell, I'll throw in the earplugs for FREE! Great vid bro. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. Action speaks louder than words. (-;
And I used to think I was so fast with my little 17 ft. sporting my hand-built 454 CBB. lol I could hit just over 100 MPH. These guys hit that in less than 3 seconds. Talk about perspective!?
Hey Polybun.....how about you don't watch it. I see you contribute well to RUclips. 1 video posted 4 years ago. The camera is mounted on a still camera when I am shooting stills, and it is turned on way before I am set to shoot. This was before the days of easily editing HiDef video, so I didnt crop the beginning and end out. Kind of ironic it has quarter of a million hits......idiot!
It's a shame see the sport was a sponsorship. Boat dragracing is completely different than anything you could possibly imagine... You haven't experienced anything to you Stan and listen to one go by
there`s this wicked rumble when they floor it that only top fuel engines are able to produce that makes em awsome!!
Im glad I am not the water.
Hey itakeyourphoto, that video camera is mounted on top of a still camera while I shoot stills. If you don't like the video, don't watch it!
No, this is at Firebird Lake, in Chandler AZ at Firebird Raceway.
goddamn.. what an explosion of power at the start!
That's right!!!!!!! love the work that you have done...thank you ..it is very much appreciated ...NDBA...:)

now you see it now you don't.
Nice work that was a nice pass keep the good work up .
Cheers
that is INSANELY FAST!!!!
When this was taken it was 1/4 mile, but the Top Fuel boats run 1000' now.
I wish I lived in America!! I love it. Go go go!!!
9.
god that water is smooth and ready for racing!
wow, now THAT us a BADASS shot!!
There is a small parachute that is attached to the back of the boat, that grabs the roostertail and slows them quite quickly.
Been driven by me for 8 months now what a feeling.
How long does it take from 0 to 60MPH? or for the europeans from 0 to 100 km/h?
That is one angry little boat.
PIONT ME AT THE BAR
my home town of Phoenix, AZ at wild horse pass casino
Dumb question, but how do they slow down?
I think an in water solid parachute that would be launched very fast will slow them way faster.
WHAT MANATEE ZONE LETS GO HYDROSLIDEIN
Holy shit!!!!
Yes, holy shit!
That is interesting.

Awesome
since when do they play the anthem during qualifying?
The water explodes !
Man that looks violent. Way more dangerous than on pavement.
that has got to be the biggest rush in life there that better than going to space.....

I wish someone would mount a GoPro® camera on top of the driver capsule for a 1/4 mile ride-along ...
