  • When tartaric acid and baking soda react together with water in a plastic zip-lock bag it produces carbon dioxide gas and the bag cools quickly absorbing heat from the surroundings. The gas blows the bag up and can be used to extinguish a lighted candle.
    Dr Simon Taylor demonstrates the experiment and discusses the chemistry ideas behind the reaction.
