  • This is an engaging science investigation into how much water (urine) a disposable nappy can absorb. Sodium polyacrylate crystals are the tiny particles of the powder found in the nappy liner. Steps are shown on how to perform the experiment. It is a super absorbent polymer (SAP) where students can easily remove the crystals and measure the amount of water, until no more can be absorbed. A saturation point is reached. There are lots of opportunities for students to discuss polymers, future technologies, scientific inquiry and of course the ethical considerations of using disposable nappies.
