New life. You've got to like it. As I mentioned before, you have a nice artistic sense, and this piece is no exception with the gray-white paint contrasting with the naturally finished top. It's a good piece to refinish as whoever manufactured it included some nice touches including battens installed on the underside of the bottom to keep the bottom of the cabinet flat and add strength. Also, the insides of the drawers appeared to be made from Cedar, a great bug control wood. Good stuff.

That backing sheet is what we (in UK) used to call hardboard. It existed before MDF, and could be found in many places. It would suffer from damp, would 'blow' and lose all it's strength. Then it could no longer do it's job. Furniture would sometimes fall apart!

I worry for you! Always wear eye protection with chemicals..One small splash and your eyes are gone forever!!
