Both great guitars, and you're spot on, the mustang pickups are brighter. I find that many modern strat pickups, even vintage-inspired ones, are voiced to avoid what's often termed the ice-picky tones. Which to me is the heart of the sound, if it's too much that's what you have a tone knob for. And yes, there's a slight difference between mustang and strat pickups which mostly boils down to the staggered pole pieces, but in a comparison like this the differences are negligible. Great demo and I think you really nailed how close they are despite their differences. But I still got it right. 😉
Both sound good. A is deeper sounding. B sounds a bit clearer. I pretty much have the same thought as you.

I completely agree with the use of tone knob. That what is there for to control brightness. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
