    Two things I forgot to mention:
    1. After driving both of these cars neither spoiler was difficult to see around with the camera rear view mirror. The high wing spoiler could be difficult to see around if you're going with a 1LT C8. 2LT or 3LT should be fine 👍🏻
    2. The high wing spoiler will definitely make it more difficult to use the trunk since it's mounted behind the hatch. You'll need to consider that if you plan on using the rear storage area often.
    Sorry for leaving this information out. Thanks for watching!

    • @ericmichel3857
      @ericmichel3857 4 года назад +1

      @@Ltngdrvr It can be removed, and I agree from a looks perspective. But small spoilers do actually help with reducing lift and drag on a car like this so it is not just aesthetics. So if you get the Z51 package that means you plan on doing at least some hard fast driving and you might really want some air management with a car like this. However I am almost certain the larger wing has no practical advantage so it just looks tacky, blocks visibility, trunk access, and costs $1100. If someone is trying to build a track car, there are far better after market options. This just reminds me of the kid with a huge wing on his honda civic.

    • @Ltngdrvr
      @Ltngdrvr 4 года назад +3

      @@ericmichel3857 Neither wing reduces drag, just the opposite, they increase it, the Corvette engineers have stated this in interviews. The wing is one reason the Z51 cars lose 10 MPH of top speed. And, unless you are going to race your Corvette on a super speedway, you won't be touching those top speeds anyway. And, yes, you can remove the wing, but then you have to make something to fill the holes that are left. As to looks of the wings, if I have to have one wing or the other, I like the high wing much better. But, for me, I'd rather just leave it off all together and wish that was an option for the Z51. Maybe next year...

      My 16 ATSV has plenty of power with its TT V6 putting down 500+ to the wheels. One thang bout a turbo is easy hp/tq upgrade via a tune.

    Something else to think about, if you do get the high wing option on your Z51 car, you will end up with two wings, so you can sell the Z51 wing to recoup some of the cost of the high wing option.

  • @cassiespencer6134

    A wing is more useful in my opinion since they produce downforce (vs lift as with an airplane) which aids in lateral tire grip at speed. However, That comes at the cost of some (induced) drag, although it's minimal and was likely a cost/benefit decision which favored improved lateral grip at, again, a slight cost in drag. You didn't buy a Prius. :O
    A spoiler on the other hand is designed to help reduce drag off the rear of the car and thus helps to slightly improve fuel mileage. They do so by controlling the airflow off the rear of the car in such a way that drag is mitigated/reduced. This also aids in fuel mileage to a small degree.
    Note: One can easily determine whether a device is a wing or a spoiler simply by feeling/looking at the underside of both. A wing will have a distinct curvature being thicker at the front, AKA the 'leading edge', which will get thicker (a distinct curve) as it nears the trailing (aft) edge.
    So why does that matter? It's simple: The thicker, curved surface toward the leading edge (front of the wing) results in air flowing over it be faster than if it were flat. In this way both the air flowing over the top of the wing will arrive at the rear edge at the same time the air flowing over the bottom will.
    Note: since the underside of the wing, again, as used on a car in this case, has a curved surface, thus requiring the air flowing over/past it to travel faster than the air flowing over the flat, upper surface of the wing. And in so doing it results in a lower pressure area beneath the wing*. This is important since it also results in downforce since nature abhors a vacuum. Or in this case a partial vacuum. Therefore: Presto! More rear tire grip at speed. Again due to the downforce as a result of a wing that's upside down.
    *Refer to (as in "Google") Bernoulli's principle if you want to learn more. (That is if you weren't paying attention in high school. >:)
    Lastly: Once again: it's a wing or a spoiler. There's no such thing as a "low wing or high wing spoiler", a relatively common misunderstanding.

    Great video! I saw a video a while back by Tadge (I think) that said the high wing had the same 400 pound downforce as the Z51 wing, but less drag. I also stuck with the Z51 wing on my C8 order because of the dealer install concern, and also the extra challenges getting stuff in/out of the trunk. A nice after-market wing might change my mind!

    That high wing just seems a bit much IMO. It certainly adds a certain look, kind of like when I see kids slap similar huge spoilers on Honda civics and the like. Something like that on a track car sure, but on a street car it just looks like you are trying to hard. Sort of like 'look at me I driving a race car! :) but you really aren't. I am sure the standard spoiler is more than adequate for street and occasional track use, and if you are really concerned about aerodynamics I am sure there are far better options, perhaps that are adjustable.
    I understand it is about looks and some just like that look, just like the kid with the honda civic. But for me form should follow function, so I don't like fake vents or completely unnecessarily large wings that hamper trunk access and visibility on a street car. In fact I would have no spoiler at all accept I know that spoilers do actually help with airflow and lift even at highway speeds so... That is why a lot of the really nice exotic hyper cars have a clean look with a spoiler that extends only at speeds where is is helpful.

    @babeadams9351 3 года назад +2

    Both look great, but i am not hearing anyone talk about the biggest problem. With the high wing it is almost impossible to reach over from the back of the car to use the trunk. I have only seen videos of people using the trunk from the sides which is awkward. My question is, why is the wing not attached to the trunk lid. I have seen (see chevy dudes vid, "should GM make this option on the C8 corvette") some aftermarket high wings that do this but you must buy a new rear "fender" to cover up the existing holes.
    One more thing, shout-out to the "GOAT", Clarence.

    • @blktiger2001

      I agree. I was hoping that the functionality would incorporate a bit more than just down force and the ability to see behind you. The high wing spoiler definitely looks bad ass, but I would like to take my C8 on road trips. This would entail some luggage. Lifting the luggage over the high wing spoiler seems to have problem written all over it. I opted for the Z51 lower spoiler.
      As Babe Adams states above, attaching the wing to the deck lid makes perfect sense. If necessary, have a three-piece spoiler. 1 piece mounted to the deck lid and the remaining 2 pieces attached to the rear fender areas. 🤷‍♂ Just a thought!

    Z 51 spoiler is my choice It was never a question in my mind. If I found out that my dealership is going to install it, I would never purchase it. My dealership may not be the worst one but it’s right there at the bottom. If you end up having to have it installed practice your due diligence and check out other Corvettes for which they’ve done the same work, as I said, my dealership lies to me constantly rolls my car back out on the line and says you’re ready only to find out they didn’t fix it or they broke it and they still said it was ready. It may just be my experience with my dealership but it’s not worth taking the chance.

They were talking to Tadge Juechter who is the executive engineer on the Corvette. It may have been Jay Leno who asked Tadge about the down force on the factory Z51 spoiler and if the high spoiler also made by Chevy, generated higher down force than the lower spoiler. Tadge said that all of the spoilers Chevy manufacturers for the C8 make the same down force (I believe he said 300 lbs of down force from all of their spoilers). The high wing does not produce more downforce, but it is more efficient, as there is less drag. I would imagine that the top speed would be somewhere between the standard Z51 and non Z51. I have it on my car which will be tracked extensively. I also think it looks cooler.

    • @cassiespencer6134
      @cassiespencer6134 11 месяцев назад

      It does in fact produce significantly more downforce which results in lift induced drag or simply 'induced drag'. That said the increase in downforce is what facilitates increased rear tire adhesion and is why it exists in the first place.
      If neither my post above nor this GM News Article doesn't' convince you then I dont know what else to say.
      "How the 2019 Corvette ZR1 Makes 950 Pounds of Downforce?"
      "ZR1’s revised front and rear aerodynamics that turn it into a real track basher.
      It starts at the nose, where the ZR1 debuts a Corvette-first underwing which Chevy says trickled down from race car world. Air is funneled through a space between the front splitter and closeout panel which generate’s front downforce and helps pinch the air, creating a mild venturi effect which accelerates airflow under the nose (dark blue) and squishes the front tires into the road. You can see how the strakes (turquoise) help guide air through the underwing.
      Airflow under the car becomes more turbulent aft of the nose as it swirls around the bottom of the engine and the rear transaxle. A rear diffuser wasn’t possible due to the placement of the Corvette’s stock mufflers.
      The key to the ZR1’s two-hundred-and-something top speed is the standard low rear wing. According to Chevy, the smaller pedestal wing creates 20 percent less drag than the optional adjustable high wing, but still generates more downforce than Z06’s wicker bill spoiler.
      Serious track shoppers can opt for the available ZTK Performance Pack, which tacks huge endplates onto the front splitter and swaps the low wing for a high mounted version offering five degrees of adjustability. The end plates are creating additional downforce by extending the high-pressure zone (red) further across the front splitter, which also translates to increased pressure (green) climbing up the front fenders.
      Whereas the standard setup only shows high-pressure downforce creation at the leading edge of the rear spoiler, the high wing shows high to mid-pressure (orange and yellow) downforce creation over a majority of its surface.
      Lastly, there’s the effect of airflow on the car’s cooling. The ZR1 uses the power steering, differential, and transmission cooling module from the Z06, plus five additional heat exchangers- four of which sit hidden behind the car’s gaping air intakes. The side intakes channel air through the intercoolers and brake ducts before spitting it out fore of the front wheels, helping smooth airflow downstream. Air hitting the middle radiator is funneled through the engine bay and out through the LT5’s top-mounted heat exchanger before being picked up with the rest of the air traveling over the car’s roof.
      You can also see how the Corvette’s rear quarter panel vents work, air is captured by the vents and forced (yellow) downwards towards the transmission and differential coolers."

    you cant just order and spoiler without conditions. No front splitter with high wing and no z51 spoiler without a z51 package.

    When installing the high wing spoiler on a Z51 car that had the Z51 spoiler, does it bolt on directly to the other spoilers holes or do you need to drill the new ones?

    Great video on the wing options. It would have been nice if you had a 3rd C8 without any wing to compare all three. My concern is if you get the 4 mounted high wing and decided to do an aftermarket 2 mounted high wing (which would look better IMO), what will happen to the other unused 2 mounted holes? Is it better to just get no spoiler and wait for an aftermarket options?

      That's a good point. Personal preference really. Z51 spoiler comes installed standard with Z51 though. Keep that in mind.

    So it has clarified: a wing has an impact on a car's downforce and low drag. Hope this settles it. In your top car wing brands, is Victor Racing also there?

    Love the high wing but was not aware it’s not installed at the factory. Is that still true for 2023. ?
    I would definitely NOT have it done at the dealership and risk any issues.

    No wing is best! Just add performance exhaust ,,,and you still got 495 HP! Unless you plan on tracking it.

  • @BucketWheat

    Having 4 mounting points puts less stress on the wing, and more stability. The ends of the wing won't flex or bend from the down-force... especially as speeds increase and you are putting hundred of pounds of down-force on the wing. Can you imagine a 150 lb. person sitting on the end of a ZR1 wing..? Or 2 150 lb. people sitting on opposite ends..? With the C8 High-Wing, the ends will not have such concerns, nor will it 'buffet' in cross-winds or high-speed extremes. IF I went with a high wing... I would prefer the 4 points, or move the 2 points further apart -- something like at the inside edges of the tail-lights -- to support the wing in a more rigged way.

    • @jeajea

      Why do faster cars have the traditional 2 mount wings then? Even the C8 R has a 2 mounted wing.

    Same question goes for the wheels...Seen people taking cars to the dearlership to get the black wheels.
    I prefer the factory Z51 wing...The 4 legged wing does not look right with the car....

    can you get the z51 package without any spoiler? I would want everything except the spoiler in that package and then just wait to get an after market wing in a year or two. The c8R has a really badass looking wing for instance and i can imagine in a few years there will be something similar for consumers.
