Ed was the original singer, before David Lee Roth joined. Ed sang and played guitar, but didn't care for the singing. His backing vocals were pretty good, until the smoking caught up to him and he had part of his tongue removed due to cancer. You can see how far his vocals were shot near the end if you ever listen to How Many Say I on Van Halen 3 with Gary Cherone. Ed sings lead on that song, and his voice is extremely deepened due to the tongue/smoking effects.

I think it was part act and part truth. I thank God every day that I got to live through the 1980s. Rushing home to see MTV World Premiere videos at 4 pm, Live Aid, and stacks of cassette tapes in my room. If you're building a time machine to go back I am so in.
Van Halen were at their peak at this point. I saw them in 1981 at the LA Sports Arena. Dave was the same. Forgetting words and not given a rats. Fun, party atmosphere. Loved all of it.
Haha, this was before my time, and love their music, but watching this, there's no denying Dave's stage presence. However I was wondering was Dave monitor problems, or just didn't care about singing half the words?

GenX here. I lived the evolution of VH. It was like a nuclear bomb dropping on all of our suburban homes. Then I saw them live in 1984. MONUMENTAL!!!!!!!! LOVE VH 4EVER
I played with a guitarist that had a tattoo on his right bicep that had both of Eddie's guitars in an x formation above a banner with the word "Dedication" in it. I didn't get to play with him much since he's disabled but one time during practice I said "hey Timmay!!! It's gettin HOT in here!!!" and proceeded to play Hot For Teacher on drums. 40th anniversary!! Guinness Book of World Records for the highest paid concert at the time of $1.5 million. 300,000 people. Greatness like this in music will never be seen or heard again.
@@ExpatMarauder Yes Metallica crushed it in Moscow. I can see how you thought I was referring to the number of people. Van Halen was in the Guinness book of world records for being the highest paid musical act at the time.(1983). I edited my answer to make that clear. I am actually very happy you brought that concert up. I also meant to say in my comment that the US festival in 1983 was simulcasted in real time to Moscow through a satellite link. It was the first time in history that had been done. It was also the height of the Cold war so it's significance is a big deal. Less than 10 years later an American band plays in Moscow and the rest is history as they say. It just shows the power of music. Two countries were on the verge of destroying themselves in the world for a while. Music seemed to break down all those barriers and ease the tension.
I hate that I've just found out about this band more recently but wow! They're amazing! EVH is the biggest roll in me learning lead guitar and I wish I was able to see them when he was still with us. RIP Eddie
armandodiaz67. Actually 1983 was rock music's greatest year. VH on their final ride her at the US FESTIVAL. by 1985 onward to 1995. It was over. What a ride it was. Many of our heroes are passing away a a fast rate in the 21st century.
I would argue that the very brief grunge explosion was the last truly great surge of rock with a large number of amazing bands rising to prominence… but Van Halen brutally dominated from 1978 to 1985. Not a lot of bands who were on FM radio rotation holds up as well today as it did then as Van Halen though.
@@petegobeckli1386 VH had one more run with the 1984 tour. I saw that one too at MSG in NYC. '83 was also the year of the first album by Metallica. so it was hardly the end.
People who are in their 70s right now think the music that came out in the 1960s and 1970s is the best its ever been. People who in their 50s and 60s right now think the 1970s and 1980s was the peak. People who are in their 30s and 40s right now think the 1990s and early 2000s was the last great period for rock. And so on…..until we’re all dead.
My older sister took me to see them in 84 and it was magical! Dave sounded, well... pretty much like this here (if not a little worse). But EDDIE! Holy hell he and the band were amazing. I remember it like it was yesterday because at like 13yrs old that was the first time I'd ever FELT music hit my body like that. It was SO friggin loud, yet crystal clear, and I think it permanently scrambled my dna lol!
Van Halen was one of those very very few bands that changed Guitar like Hendrix and also scared the shit out of their “betters” when they started. The blew away any and every band they ever played with.
This band is part of my soul, their music unlike anything else and it completely defines me. It’s hard to see the way Dave acted during such special and spectacular moments. even as a DLR era fan. Wish I could’ve seen something as special as a sober Dave live. It’s weird to think of the difference between the two eras but it’s clear why they had separated after 1984. Forever in my heart EVH forever
They were all a bunch of drunks. You think Ed was a Sunday picnic? Dave is Dave. Yes, he’s half in the bag, but that’s the whole point . If he were to “behave”, as you describe it, none of this would be special. He might seem like an a-hole to you, but , these are his songs . His lyrics, his attitude.. Roth IS Van Halen, and Van Halen is Roth. End of story.
I’m so pissed I was born in 2004 so I missed every legendary band that I love especially my favorite Van Halen, I’d do anything to of seen them back in the day
Keep that same spirit and infectious enthusiasm going, it’s not dead. They did it, and did it cuz of their heros! I was in hs when rock was literally dead. 2000. Lived halen. my brother said years later u had the most epic high school “career” -dancin n partyin the night away- ever. pops was gone lot for work, epic stereo, man we just blasted halen and kept the pure joy goin, legendary movie like parties. No sense bein bummed, just keep it halening so others catch it. They brought the babes n smiles to heavy metal, and u should too 💃🏻💃🏻rock on! 🙌🏽
be even worse if you were alive and still missed them like me , lol ,, i was 16 in 84 could have seen them live on that tour but for some reason i didnt.. and then Dave left the band i was so pissed.. still am
I saw them 3 times. First they opened for The Rolling Stones at Louisiana superdome. Their first album was just released. Blew the Stones away. Then same place 6 months later at a Day of Rick n Roll. They completely ruled the day. Then saw them on their Fair Warning tour in Baton Rouge. All were amazing performances. The greatest band of my time. I was born in 1965 and when first album came out I was in 9th grade. Eddie changed everything. The influence he had on all guitarists since remains a testament to how important he is to music . Rest in Paradise EVH.
My favorite band of all time. When I'm high enough, this specific concert is mesmerizing. When I'm not, it's sorta a tough watch. I was born in 82, the year of "Diver Down" and this is the same set list from that tour. Some of those shows videos are amazing SOBER! Montreal is sick. Lucky I got to see them in 2007 and 2012. I know it wasn't anything like their glory days - but it makes me feel a bit like I showed up to the last hour of a crazy, hazy party
Back in 1999, maybe 2000, I bought a dubbed VHS bootleg copy of this concert off ebay for like $35. This was years before RUclips. It really makes me feel old when I meet young people who have never listened to music with a portable cd player and headphones. Let alone a freaking walkman with cassette tapes.
Yeah, I had some high tec low profile walkmen by Sony around 2000. They were the shit back then. Getting tapes together with ones favourite songs was a challenge with only 90 minutes play time, it made me much more selective music wise. But today's tech is just awesome. I have my entire collection in my car and with my mobile phone millions of songs available anywhere I go to.
I used to wish they would sound more studio like live. And for Dave to stick to the lyrics and whatnot. After watching this again, I realize I was wrong. This is a party. This is my favorite band bringing the show to me. If I want studio, I'll put on the original recordings.
Van Halen was a party band. Eddie Van Halen started having a problem with that. He wanted to be seen as a serious artist. Hence the reason for the Roth getting ousted from the band. Roth wanted to keep the party going
Saw them before Dave was a well known drinker, 1979 (I was 17) in Detroit at Masonic Auditorium. 2nd row, only because there was some fine ass girl in front and I didn't want to knock her out of the way. 6 feet in front of Eddie the whole show. Still to this day best concert I have ever attended. 2 hours of pure guitar mastery. Loved getting my head blown off by the Master.
What more can really be said? The greatest rock and roll party band ever with the greatest rock guitar player who ever lived! Every Van Halen song is a magical summer day! Technical prowess mixed with infectious melody and groove, the recipe for The Mighty Van Halen! Music that stirred the emotions!
The most iconic performance by the most iconic band in the history of the world. I could never imagine how the members of Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones could have felt during this time, threaten I'm sure. Much respect. Thank you for the upload.

@19:33 That is the shit right there that made David Lee Roth one of the best singers in rock n roll. That scream you hear right there changed generations of music. Also one of things that really amazes me about this show is how they actually got better as the setlist when on. Like good athletes, they become stronger as the game goes on. By mid set, this band is F'n tight as hell !
Jesus what an electric performance. That must have been amazing to see and for them to play. This has to be the best VH performance I've seen. I'm no expert on them but man, this was amazing!

When I was back in college at UF I went to Orlando to see The Rolling Stones in concert. To my surprise Van Halen opened with an excellent show. I got very lucky as I watched two of the best bands in the world. I still remember I paid $25 por the ticket. What a bargain.
This show (like the AC/DC show in Rock in Rio on January 15, 1985) is in my opinion the best of the best that every rock fan should hear and see. Unfortunately it's not officially released. That "Metal Day" was THE metal day and I don't understand why Van Halen and the other bands didn't pay attention to this. They should have done the same thing Judas Priest did. They give us a really unforgetable show and they remastered it for their fans to enjoy. That's the way. What you shared here brings me really close to something officially remastered, and I thank you so so much
By the time I was old enough to go to a Van Halen concert Sammy was a few years out from leaving the band the first time. I was such a Diamond Dave loyalist to an extent but I love all of it . Rest in peace to the best to ever touch the stringed stick Mr Eddie Van Halen 🕊️🤟🏾
I would agree with putting Page in there too until the end of 1973, but there were loads of guitarists that were better live. Hendrix for sure, Beck, lots of them. The studio isn't the easiest place for guitar players to relax and give their best.
How about the extended version of Somebody Get Me a Doctor, with the brief interlude of Girl Gone Bad in the middle, a whole year before 1984 even came out!! LOVE IT!!

God that has been part of Dave's act from the beginning, he couldn't keep up with the band cause he was so wasted.
DL Roth was totally wasted and drunk at this concert.
I think it was part act and part truth. I used to think it was all an act but when I started listening to pre album recordings you see that the songs we knew from the albums didn't all start out that way. "Hang Em' High" was "were Were You Last Night". So maybe he was right and "Forgot the Fucking Words Again!" 😅

I saw them at a small club in Virginia Beach in 1978. "these guys are going to be big!"

My uncle always tells me about this concert. He says Scorpions were really really good here too.
Indeed they were.
Priest had to play in daytime becasue Roth didn't want to follow Halford and the boys. So Scorps got to play at night before Halen. Roth is a clown.
@@Frip36 yeah right. That means the Scorpions didn’t want to follow them either. Sorry, not buying it. Van Halen was one of , if not, the biggest band in the world at this time. They got $1.5 million for this performance. Halford was a nobody except to a few dirty meatheads wearing leather jackets.
Tio wasn't lying. Scorps and VH were both GREAT! An awesome day!!!!!!
Klause is one of the best singers to ever sing Rock music!
He came in PERFECTLY and was playing along as if we were a radio playing the song. Him and I tore thru that song just enough for him to slay the solo and we came to a grand ending. The cheese smile we both had was epic. I miss him and Eddie RIP...Van Halen FOREVER!!!!!!

Metallica and russia was the biggest concert ever over a million
RIP Eddie

Not only the peak of their career, but the peak of Rock n Roll. Things slowly started going South in the mid 80's.
armandodiaz67.
There's some great new stuff from the "old guard".
Check out KXM....George Lynch, dUg Pinnik and Ray Luzier.

Eddie Van Halen was a guitar God... Need I say more rest in peace Eddie
Sammy was way better
@@Sungoku47better live for sure, but the band… well, it feels like they lost that rock feel, and Eddie not always on lead, that was wrong.
I have a distinct feeling that David sang better in the studio because he wasn't out of breath from jumping and dancing around like a maniac.
Van Halen with David Lee Roth was like Motley Crue. Great musicians, terrible singer.
Eddie is VAN HALEN!!

When I'm high enough, this specific concert is mesmerizing.
When I'm not, it's sorta a tough watch.

Some of those shows videos are amazing SOBER! Montreal is sick.
Lucky I got to see them in 2007 and 2012.
I know it wasn't anything like their glory days - but it makes me feel a bit like I showed up to the last hour of a crazy, hazy party
82?? you're a spring chicken- not this era
They sound pretty close to studio
Ahh the good ole days...i was at cobo in 78 when they opened for black Sabbath. It was a show!

I would agree with putting Page in there too until the end of 1973, but there were loads of guitarists that were better live. Hendrix for sure, Beck, lots of them. The studio isn't the easiest place for guitar players to relax and give their best.
