My top tip for extending the wear time of your summer makes: A full slip! I recently bought a vintage one so I can wear it under my dresses and skirts (with tights when its cold). That way I get to wear my lovely makes for longer :) x
@@LuciaSaltala That is a great tip! I always wear a full slip with my dresses in cooler seasons (I live in Sweden, so most of the year, often it is needed during summer too). I have never sewn one, but I have many warm fullslips made of very thin merinowooljersey. I guess the thin white wool fabric you showed, Sarah, could work for that too. Mine are of similar material.
Sarah, I just found your channel and I am over the moon! I will be going back through all of them. Can't wait to see your fall plans come to fruition! Lovely to "meet" you. 🧡
I LOVE all of your fabrics!❤❤❤ The skirts are longer this fall, and I have already made three. I like the sweater sewing patterns, and really everything. The darker yarn will look so pretty with your burgundy pieces💘. When sewing, I had a tip from an older woman to always use a topstitch needle in the size that you need. I switched to a size 12 topstitch needle, and the thread does go through the needle much better. For example, use a topstitch needle size 12 ballpoint for your knits 😀
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And wow, three skirts made already! I also love the longer skirt lengths in fashion this season and I'm eager to explore styling them. I hadn't thought of pairing the darker yarn with my burgundy pieces, thank you for the idea, and thanks for the ballpoint needle tip! 😊
That hounds tooth is going to look fantastic on you. Packaging string🤣, personally I like the salt and pepper, glad you're keeping it. Q and A- I'm curious to know what you do for work in France, you mentioned working in an office maybe🤷? I'm newish to the channel and really enjoying your content. Congratulations on you rapid growth, so exciting!
I love when you do these videos! The only better ones are when you get to show off the things after they’re made! I think the pepper and salt yarn would be great in a vest - it lets you use a lighter long sleeve underneath to brighten the darker tone. Or even bring in some colour, depending on what you have. A green would be very cozy. I have such little experience with sewing knit fabrics, you inspire me with how many knits you sew garments from. I really need to have a go at the wide neck sweater, I think that might be a good pattern for someone like me who has such little (quality) experience with knits. Thank you for being so in depth and particular - not many people talk about the fit and texture of garments as much as you and it’s very helpful since those are things I care about but I only tend to learn about through … well, the mistakes I make haha.
I have a small electric fan heater exactly for this season 😅 I can recommend it so much. It's great for at home when the heating is still turned off. Mine was less than 20€ and I only have it on for an hour at a time or so, so it doesn't really add much to my electricity bill, but it really heats up a room so quickly. We even took it with us on a trip last week, because some hotel rooms can be quite cold in October and it was so worth it 😅
Oh wow, thanks for the tip! I always thought that space heaters consumed insane amounts of electricity at a time, so I’ve never tried one, but I’ll keep it in mind for next year! Luckily, the heat is on at work now and I’m not freezing at my desk in my coat all day anymore! 😂
@@Sarah_Naomi they do, but any calculation you find online is always with the assumption that you have it on every day, around the clock, on full heat. I just use it selectively, like a couple of days in October or April, and as I said just to heat up the room a little, sometimes even half an hour is enough, and I really don't notice it on my electricity bill.
Your makes are all so thoughtful and I love that they have a purpose in your wardrobe and will all hopefully get good wear! Thank you for sharing :) My question for the Q&A is if you have any rituals when you sew? (Like a cuppa, certain music etc). And whether you "schedule" sewing into your week or do it when you feel inspired? I am working and studying so have precious little time for sewing and am interested in ways others make the most of their sewing time!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! Oh man, I've already filmed the Q&A and those are such good questions! For the first, I usually do like to make myself a hot cup of coffee or tea to sip while I'm sewing and I catch up on my favorite booktuber's videos. Then for the 2nd, I mostly sew after dinner or on the weekends, and most of the time I'm motivated, but sometimes I have to push myself to finish a project! I don't usually need to schedule time now that I'm not juggling work and school and I know that's a great luxury. I wish you all the best with your work and studies and as the French say: bon courage!
Oh classic me being too slow catching up on videos haha 🤦♀️ Thank you so much for taking the time to answer them regardless! I'm trying a few different approaches and nothing has quite stuck yet so very keen to get more ideas on what works for others. After dinner is interesting! I've not really dabbled in evening sewing for fear of poor light but I think it might be worth a try! Merci bien 😊
Congratulations! Nice with Q&A😊 I often find myself too buying eye-catching statement garments or fabrics. They tend to be much more appealing and interesting than neutrals... A couple of years ago I found myself in a situation with MANY clothes that were very difficult to match because almost all were patterned or in a very special color. It really is wise to plan your wardrobe so that there is enough neutrals and solids to tie things together. It has been so interesting to watch your videos, of course because of the interest for crafting, but also for books and ballet etc.😊 By the way, the soft, cool, delicate colors suit you very nicely. 👍 Some questions: 1. When and how did you learn to sew? Was it encouraged at your childhood home? 2. What originally motivated you to start making your own clothes? 3. How long have you been training ballet? 4. Do you make one project at a time or do you have multiple projects going on at the same time? 5. Have you ever sewn/knitted anything for your husband? My plans for this autumn include a grey cable knit cardigan in merino wool for my son (a large project since he is very tall 19 year old). I think I will make some smaller knitting projects alongside so that I won't get too tired of it, some warm accessories like wrist warmers, scarves etc. I am also finishing a greyish blue cable knit cardigan in alpaca for myself and I am looking forward to be able to wear it as it is getting so cold now. I have also purchased second hand a very nice, warm fabric in soft blue and white, I would like to sew a dress of it. Have a lovely weekend!😊
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a lack of fall neutrals in my closet! I was worried that these projects would be boring, but they seem to resonate with a lot of people! Thank you for all the questions, I'll try and incorporate all of them in the Q&A video! That's also a great idea alternating working on the cardigan for your son with smaller projects to keep from getting big project fatigue, and your plans for a cozy cable-knit alpaca cardigan sound so nice for the cooler season!
You have beautiful makes in your fall sewing plan! I’ve been sewing quilts and have just started sewing clothing. You’ve inspired me to learn how to knit 🧶. One sewing skill I’d like to learn is how to line dresses and skirts. If you line the Sew Over It Pencil Skirt, I’d love to see how you do it! Though, only if that’s something you would enjoy filming and editing. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much and I'm so happy to have been a part of what motivated you to learn to knit! 😊 Thank you for the video request too, I've received a few similar requests, so I'll keep it in mind!
Ahahahah "no one asked him" made me laugh out loud :) Congratulations on the 10k subs. I am a new subscriber and I am completely enamored with your style, your delivery and your aura :) you are beautiful inside and out. I'm very curious to know what do you do for your regular day job? Can't wait for Q&A video and all the beautiful makes :)
I really enjoy your seasonal plans and makes videos! It's really inspired me to try my hand at garment sewing. All the additional information about fabric colors and content along with actually showing the drape of your fabrics is really helpful. For your upcoming Q&A: could you give a little tour of your sewing space? It looks like a light comfy space for creativity! I was also wondering, where do you usually get your fashion inspiration? Online? Just seeing the fashion in Paris? I really love your style and I'm hoping to find mines 😊. Thanks so much for your videos and Instagram posts! I always look forward to them
I'm so glad that you find these videos helpful! Videos like these really helped me learn to choose fabrics and sew and I'm so glad to give back! Thank you for the questions too, I'll try to answer them in the next video!
Such a beautiful selection of fabrics! I curse Brexit even more than usual whenever you talk about the European fabric shops you use. Viscose-rich double knits used to form the backbone of my fairly-fitted-but-secretly-comfortable work wardrobe, but it can be hard to find, especially in more subtle and nuanced neutral colours. I love modal French terry for a jersey fabric with excellent drape, but that's also substantial enough that it doesn't show every lump, bump or line that might lurk beneath a more fitted skirt or dress. I just wish I could find some in a beautiful taupe or other soft and cool brown tones, as they would pair so nicely with the more deep but muted tones I like to wear. Congrats on all of your new subscribers. It's richly deserved!
Ah yes, I also miss all of the lovely fabric shops I used to order from in the UK before Brexit! I hope you find some viscose knit fabrics in shops local to you soon and if I see any, I’ll try and point it out!
Exciting makes! Especially looking forward to the seamwork cardigan. In theory your ideal browns are the Rosy family of browns, because they are pink-based, not red based. (Just like your ideal coral is pink based, and your "burgundy" is much closer to raspberry/purple than red 😊).
I really enjoy watching your videos :) for the Q&A: can you take us along how you adjust the patterns (i.e. when hip and waist sizes differ)? As of now I'm a bit unsure of how to do that so that the clothes fit as perfectly as they do on you. And my second question would be what is your experience with natural fibers? Is this something you would consider for future fabrics?
Thank you for your kind words and the questions! For the grading question, I'm thinking of making a video on my favorite sewing techniques I've learned throughout the years including how I grade between patterns so that I can go into detail. But I'll definitely include the second question!
I LOVE. all your color choices. Esp the chocolate brown, which I am going to incorporate also. And beige is a wonderful color when it is warm-toned and cuddly. It is tricky to get right, but when you do, it is sublime, I live in California so we don’t get cold winters and our fall is only the month of November. I have made 7 pair of ITY knit pants in prints for a boho look. Then I made 5 tops, 3 of which are good. Fun fun fun.
I love getting more cold weather use out of my summer dresses, pinafores, and silk/linen camis by layering thin cotton turtlenecks with matching tights under them. I have white, navy, black, burgundy matching sets. I want to pick up forest green and maybe a mustard set this year. I wear the summer tops with thick, wool plaid midi skirts or I just wear it with the turtleneck by itself. Winter and fall are my favorite because dressing is so much easier for me lol
Hi Sarah! I just returned from two weeks in France, ending up with a couple of days in Paris. I had every intention of hitting the fabric stores below the Sacré-Cœur but it didn’t happen. I did manage to go to Toto! That reminded me of many shops we use to have in Pittsburgh where you had to really browse for good finds. I found two pieces that I liked, but didn’t buy them which now I regret! We went to a restaurant also on Rue Reamur while there which served your choice of beef or chicken in a sort of fixe price meal. It was really good. Anyway, it was a fun experience and I never would have had it if I hadn’t read your vlog on fabric stores. Thanks!
Ohh, those projects sound so lovely! I only recently started knitting, so I don't have very many pieces to show, but thanks for the idea! Maybe I will round up all my finished knitting projects so far! 😊
This is such a pleasant little Saturday treasure from you! As for colors, I agree that finding the perfect balance is an ongoing thing. I have just made a skirt (see below) which is too pale pink for my regular wardrobe, and I'm needing to ground it with neutrals that are not too dark. A tan belt and knit top should help. In summer I wear cream, white, ivory, and lots of happy, vibrant shades. Black only with white or other accent colors. Winter is different, in that I can wear darker shades of everything but hate going TOO dark. This is from a person with very warm, moderately pale coloring. Recently I discovered that I love warm, leafy greens! This adds a marvelous touch to any wardrobe, even if just as a part of a print. As for sewing: I am very much hoping to make a matching vest to my skirt. I've chosen the Hanbok vest from Sewing Therapy. It is just right for my almost-beginner level and still of an interesting design. It will match in fabric the retro A-line maxi skirt (McCalls M8257). This is a quite generous design, in that I was nearly swimming in the xs, so I may re-cut it to a better fit or add a decorative pleat in front next time I make it. Highly recommended, however, for those who like a lot of fabric in their maxis without a lot of bulk at the simple elastic waist. It's quite elegant when worn with a 2-inch heel. I am 5'4" and it was miles too long until I took out some length in the pattern piece. The illustration on the packet is pretty accurate! For a beginner level skirt, the results were satisfactory. I've also made several 'paper bag' straight skirts out of vintage and found fabrics, as I've mentioned earlier. The straight but not tight design is a marvelous transitional style for autumn and spring. In our hot climate, however, I can only wear these in the AC during summer. Autumn, here we come! Thanks for reading this, Sarah. I talk like this with my sissy, and you feel like one too. :) Please take good care of you! Blessings, Rachel.
I'm glad to see that you've figured out a comfortable balance of colors for each season! I aspire to being so adept and your new love for warm, leafy green colors sounds sumptuous! Those sound like fantastic sewing plans, and so comfortable! I also love more voluminous clothes that are both elegant and easy to move in! I hope you have a lovely autumn season and I'm so glad to have you in this community! Thank you for leaving such a lovely message and take care as well 😊
Nice well-considered plans. For the rib-knit Sezanne dupe skirt; if your pattern has a straight waistband, I would use wide enough elastic as the facing/inside of the waistband and only use the ribknit for the outside. Reduces bulk, it sits smoother and the elastic won’t twist because it’s anchored at the top and the bottom. If the waistband is curved I would use a elastic lycra fabric (like you would use for e.g. leggings) for the facing. I keep a meter or so in my stash specifically for waistbands. Very comfortable while still sturdy enough to keep things up.
I love all of these projects!! I’m also trying to experiment more with neutrals and try browns and tans over blacks. Can’t wait to see these come to life!
First of all congratulations! Oh my goodness, you made my daughter and I laugh a lovely laugh with your comment on you husband. You are a creator, he is not, you can see a raw item, such as ball of yarn or yard of fabric and visualize a beautiful creation. And that becomes your goal. Love your creations.
Congrats on your 14k subs!! My question is: What is your most viewed video? Wondering if your wedding dress series drew lots of new viewers. I love your colorful Brene top. I wear a lot of solids because I like the way wild fabrics look on other people but I feel uncomfortable in them. Every time. I saw some grass green denim on the Dahlia Sewciety and I was so influenced! But then I was like, what! You are never going to wear green jeans!! I especially love the rib sweater knit. Can't wait to see the cardigan and skirt. Sorta have to agree with your mari that the unintended yarn is a little postage twine-looking. Although I'm sure that when knitted, it will be elegant as can be. Have a great week!
Thank you! I also find myself drawn to fabrics and styles that I know I probably won't wear (and my fabric stash is unfortunately full of them)! 😂 I'm also nervous about the postage twine-looking yarn 😂 but it's almost identical in color to the light mocha double knit I'm planning to make the Helen's Closet Elliot sweater in and spoilers: I made it, it looks great, and the mari thinks that that color looks nice on me as well, so I also think the yarn, once knit up, is going to be really nice too!
Love your channel! ☺️ for the Q&A: Other than the wedding dress (that turned out amazing by the way) , are there any big “life time achievement” sewing projects you would want to make in the future?
Hi Sarah! Your makes are always so pretty. I’m going to make some sweatshirts, and long sleeve blouses and tops. I also am cold if it’s below 70 and I live in Colorado with the 5 months of winter, sometimes 6 months of winter. Oh. I am hoping to make a casual blazer of some sort.
I think you would look great in a slightly positive ease cardi with your extra Ulysse yarn. It’s a sport, not a dk but you might get gauge at a dk. That darker yarn would pair nicely with some of your future fall skirts!
Ah yes, I realized it was a sport weight yarn after posting the video! 😂 Thanks for the tip and the project idea! I haven't knitted a cardigan yet and I'm intrigued...
Beautiful makes, love the floral linen top. Great plans too. I would love to know if you having sewing friends in Paris. I don't know anyone local to me who sews. Also, I would love to get back into knitting, what would you suggest as a very beginner friendly pattern company? It's been a while 😅
Hi Sarah, could you please talk about why you decided to make France your home and how your life is different from the one you had in the States? Thank you!
I love how your sewing space background looks. I'd love a sewing room tour, detailing what machine(s) you have and your favorite tools or techniques. Also Congrats on your 10K subscribers 🎉❤
Congratulations on reaching 10,000 subscribers! 🎉 I too find the onset of autumn a sad time - for me it's about the days getting shorter. I find it harder to get excited about sewing for the colder weather; however, there are some delicious colours around to provide inspiration! Out of the fabrics you showed, I love the dark green, the chocolate brown, and the houndstooth one the best. I'm a great fan of a good woollen fabric, and there are some wonderful smooth wools about that are not at all scratchy, and have a lovely drape. We sewists must console ourselves for the loss of those long sunny summer evenings somehow! 😂
Thank you so much and yes! That’s exactly how I feel about autumn! Finding cozy fabrics that are both warm and not too itchy is sometimes a challenge, but I’m determined to find them! And I agree, there are some really lush earth tones that I’m excited to work with that would look out of place in the summer sunshine 😊
Congratulations on your 14,000 subscribers. I do like your fall sewing and knitting plans. Knitting a cardigan with your poivre et sel coloured yarn would be another great addition to your wardrobe. Check out the Granit, Wheat or Felix Cardigans on Ravelry. How long have you known how to knit and sew. Who taught you these skills.
You always inspire me. That blue dress from the other video is a dream and the dress as well as the colour suit you very well. Maybe you are just not as used to wearing a loser garment ;) I learned from you to buy fabric during my trips, the best souvenir ever! My suggestions for the Q&A: 1. How did you learn how to sew? 1. When did you realise you felt at home in France? How do you find the time to sew with a full time job? Take care.
Oh, thank you so much and I'm glad that I helped inspire you to find fabric souvenirs to remember your travels by! Thanks too for your take on the blue dress - maybe it will grow on me if I figure out how to style it 😊 and oh man, I just filmed the Q&A video this morning and I did get to the topic of your first question, but not the other two and they're good questions! I hope you don't mind if I answer you here! 2. There wasn't a specific event that made me realize France was home as much as it was a strong gut feeling after about a month here during my studies and it remained strong through the trials and tribulations of the immigration process! And for sewing time, I'm a homebody and I don't have kids or pets, so I think I might have a bit more time than on average for hobbies, but I sew mostly after dinner during the work week and on the weekends 😊
Well done Naomi on growing your channel so quickly, well deserved. I love your style of presentation and your aesthetic , I find you a joy to watch. I am forever nervous about using knit fabrics, I don’t have a serger ( out of choice ) but the knit fabrics you have shown in this recent video are tempting , I would therefore appreciate any tips/ advice you could offer re sewing with knits.
Thank you! I understand your feelings about sewing with knits, they can be daunting and sometimes go very, very wrong! That's a great idea, I might make a whole video about my advice for sewing with knits!
I just finished gauge testing for a cardigan I am knitting this fall. I really wish I'd started it last month, but hopefully I can finish it before the end of the month. I am also hoping to sew a raglan style sweatshirt but in less thick fabric. Also, a turtleneck and another pair of tights. The goal is to not buy more fabric until I make those three items, but we'll see lol. I really like the summery top you made, with the black skirt. So pretty and feminine! I have a pattern on Pinterest saved that looks similar to yours. If you make it again, would you consider a sew-a-long?
I love your objective to not buy any new fabric or yarn until you finish your projects! That takes a lot of discipline (that I'm still working on developing 😂)! Thanks for the video idea for the Brené top! The pattern actually comes with a step-by-step video tutorial - I highly recommend it!
Great video Sarah - you've got autumn sorted out, that's for sure. Do you like tone on tone dressing? It's not that common, but can look amazing I think. Looking forward to seeing your progress with all your beautiful fabrics 🎉🎉
Thank you! And yes, I'm stating to appreciate tone on tone dressing more and more! I'm not sure if this is a universal experience, but tone on tone looks feel calmer to me 😊
Huge congrats on 14K subs, much deserved! I love your videos, and always look forward to checking them out, they're a huge inspiration. I picked up sewing not long ago (a few months ago, all by hand no machine) so I'd like to ask: 1- How do you select the type of fabric for a specific pattern? 2- I LOVE the 1st burgundy dress you showed on the picture examples, could you please share the pattern and fabric type? Thank you so much!! Keep up the amazing work
I'm so glad you enjoy these videos and thank you! For the 1st burgundy dress I shared, it's the Sew Over It Charlotte Dress in a medium-weight polyester crepe fabric 😊
Congratulations on your 10,000 subscribers 🎉 You have such lovely plans for the fall and winter! Can’t wait to see the finished garments. I’m getting my fabric and patterns together also. Mostly pants, skirts and turtlenecks. Thanks for the video 🪡🧵👗🥰
I love the colours and fabrics you have chosen. I got my colour analysis done recently and have discovered that my colour palette is cool winter, but I like the slightly muted winter colours. As for knitting, these days I am in love with vests (slipovers). Finished one for myself and am now knitting the Moby slipover by Petite Knits :) I find them versatile, can be paired with different coloured shirts and blouses and coordinated nicely with jackets and coats. Looking forward to your finished projects, all the best.
Congratulations on reaching 10,000 subscribers. I've been watching for a few years and only just recently subscribed (at 13,000+ subscribers) and was excited for you when I realized that in just a few days your subscribers increased to to 14,000. Well done. I like your style and aesthetic. Well done on the presentation and editing too. You've inspired me to try my hand at sewing again after many, many years. I purchased a machine a few months ago and it sat in my closet until a few days ago. Thank you very much.
It's very interesting to hear you talk about your colours and what flatters your skin tone etc. I've been going down that rabbit hole too, and like you have realised accomodating for my low contrast helps me look more harmonious. I am surprised that you find cool colours flatter you more than warm colours because you always struck me as looking warmer rather than cooler. Your hair is almost the same colour as mine (I was diagnosed a soft autumn by a professional). With the fact you are low contrast, I wonder what season you think you might be? I don't see you as a soft summer but mind you I am not an expert in any shape or form 😂😂 It could also be that the camera alters your colouring
I'm glad you're enjoying my color musings! I'd really like to do a color analysis sometime and I think I'm between a soft autumn and a soft summer, but it's so hard to really know!
Colors are interesting. Years ago I worked in a store that emphasized color identification for skin tones. In their system I was darker summer and softer winter. My eyes are brown and my hair? Well, it is ’brown’, but on some charts it is actually labeled dark blonde. People typically don’t distinguish these subtleties. My daughter-in-law is Philippine and clearly has black hair. I mention that because there are many shades of black that we don’t recognize regularly. For years I have preferred brown eye shadow since black appears harsh on me. My thought is that it is difficult to locate and I guess that marketing believes that we all can use black. If you can find it the burgundy is wonderful for softer skin tones. I do enjoy your sewing skills and discovery. I am a knitter, which is why I got your RUclips channel recommended first. Thank you.
Love your fall plans, especially the luxurious knits you're planning to sew. Cozy! 😊 I like that you're thinking about the option of brown instead of black (I wear black but it doesn't look so good on me) and wondered if you know the Heidiy Knitting Podcast. She likes the burgundies and deep browns as well, along with a somewhat muted palette that really compliments her coloring.
I’m sewing for summer as in Australia, just purchased brene top pattern and looking forward to creating… the colours in this video ❤ I tend to use ‘earthy’ colours but trying to add blue ?! Different but like how it looks on me
How lovely! Happy summer sewing and I hope that you enjoy sewing the Brené top! I find that blue looks especially nice with earthy tones (especially brown), and I'm sure you pull it off well!
Sarah, I loved your video! If you haven’t seen it yet, this new seamwork pattern - the Brookes skirt - might be just what you’re looking for to make your green twill skirt.
Ah yes, I saw that Seamwork skirt pattern and it's on my to-make list! But I'm hoping to find a slightly thicker/firmer fabric to make it in... maybe a stretch corduroy or jean...to be continued!
I love the salt and pepper color on you. How bout a sleeveless vest which overhangs the shoulder a few inches. You could wear it with skirts, pants and jeans.
Congrats on the 10k subs what an achievement. The wool I’d make something similar to the original design you wanted. Or you could go totally different. Either way you’ll have 2 new pieces. Men have no idea about craft sewing etc. he needs a smack 😆 What do you do for work ?
Thank you! And I find great satisfaction in proving him wrong with my fabric and yarn choices 😂 Thanks for the question! A lot of people seem curious about my day job, so I'll definitely include it in the Q&A!
Congrats on 10K! And, thank you for all your helpful content. For the Q&A: What resources (books, online/in-person classes, free patterns etc.) would you recommend for an absolute beginner sewist? Many thanks and God bless!
Thank you for your kind words and for the question! I'm thinking of making a whole series on my recommendations for beginners sewists (tools, patterns, and fabric, for example) and I'm glad to hear that you'd be interested in that kind of content!
I didn’t know about the needle plate and I’ve been sewing for over 30 years. Amazing things we learn on RUclips. I love chocolate brown. What type of top or sweater would you recommend for a charcoal grey boucle knit? It’s light weight. Perfect for Southern California winters. I love all your future projects. Thanks for sharing and congrats on reaching 10k subs!
Thank you so much and me too! Although, I think I spoke too soon about my straight needle plate: it’s not at all adapted for a zigzag stitch, but maybe some are! I’ve only ever made one garment out of a bouclé fabric; it was the Seamwork Jessie Coatigan and it’s great for layering in the fall! You can find it on my Instagram page 😊
Congrats on getting to 10,000 subscribers and beyond! Can’t wait to see your projects! I made a Milo this year with ponte from Blackbird Fabrics and I love it!
Thanks for the idea! The double knit fabric in taupe and charcoal are called "Maille tricot fin double face Lia" and the heavier-weight beige rib knit fabric is called "tissu jersey maille tricot Kelly" at Tissus Hemmers. I hope that helps!
I love your channel! Love your style and how you present your beautiful makes! I’m a new subscriber and I’ve learned quite a few tips already … I also didn’t know about the straight plate🤦🏼♀️! I’ve been using left over tracing (medical exam paper) to prevent fabric chewing. Really enjoy your sharing style ❤🤗, Lola 🇨🇦
Thank you and welcome! I haven't used the straight stitch plate yet and I'm so excited to see if it works! I'll make sure to report back. In any case, using leftover medical paper sounds like a great technique too!
@@Sarah_Naomi Be careful when using it for stretch fabrics: I don't know about yours but my straight needle plate is made for straight stitch only, so a zigzag wouldn't work (and damage the plate and/or the needle).
That's it! I just pulled mine out of storage to try and use it and it is definitely not shaped for any kind of zigzag stitch, only straight stitches. Oh man! 😂
Si you're in/near Paris, there is woman with a stall on Sundays in the Marais and she has the most beautiful sets of vintage buttons, already on a card so you don't have to dig through a box of buttons.
I just finished the Margo skirt from seamwork in a heavy ponte. Hoping I got the waist right or I’m going to be in trouble walking through the airport tomorrow. 😂
Hey Sarah Please be aware, that if you attach a lining to your skirt, the lining actually has to be slightly LARGER than the skirt itself. Sounds weird, but it’s true. Just add 2-3 mm to the side seams and you”ll be good 👌
Thank you for the questions! I've already filmed the Q&A video and I get to your second question, but I can answer your first here! I usually just jump in because with experience, I can usually tell what modifications I'll need to add to the pattern from the start or I know I'll be able to adjust any minor fitting issues as I go. I do sometimes make mock-ups though, and that's when I'm not sure about the fit or it's a garment I'm not familiar making that needs to fit a certain way (like a blazer or my wedding dress!). I hope that helps!
Oh my! For Paris, I made a whole video on my favorite fabric shops, so don’t hesitate to check that out! For Frankfurt, I’ve heard that the haberdashery I found is now permanently closed and I don’t know any others. For London, I like to check out Rainbow Fabrics in Kilburn, they sometimes have treasures, otherwise, the Goldhawk Road full of fabric shops is really interesting to explore. I hope that helps!
Hello, I purchased that fabric from So Tissus (based in Paris, France) over a year ago. It was deadstock fabric and it looks like they have anymore unfortunately 😕
Oh my! 😂 I’ve already filmed the Q&A (coming out this weekend hopefully 🤞), so I’ll answer you here and my answer is: I have no idea - many! 😂 suffice to say that I have enough handmade garments to wear almost all handmade outfits all year 😊
i love your summer tee and tank that you made. i’m not confident enough to try it. i did find a video for a different heavy sweater that i’m going to try. ruclips.net/video/D49f490un-U/видео.htmlsi=3rANsS8oBLDWcV9N But would you ever consider a video to teach how to make the tee and tank?😬 I would be over the moon if I could ever make one.
That looks like a great sweater tutorial, and such a cozy-looking sweater! I'm not sure I'm experienced in knitting enough to create a knit-along just yet (I'm still learning as I go too!), but I highly recommend trying the Tolsta Tee, it's a great, easy pattern, quick to knit, and it works with a lot of different yarns!
Your outfits are not as flamboyant as what they wear on the Netflix series “Emily in Paris.” Do they really dress like that in Paris? What made you decide to move to Europe? I wish I had the nerve in my 20’s to take such a leap. I love the wool but it would itch me like crazy!
😂 I admit, I have an almost irrational dislike for that series, but that's a great question! I'll have to watch an episode to see what all the other characters wear too to get a better idea, and maybe I'll go into why I have such an aversion to the series (but of course, it's great if you like it!) 😂😂
My top tip for extending the wear time of your summer makes: A full slip! I recently bought a vintage one so I can wear it under my dresses and skirts (with tights when its cold). That way I get to wear my lovely makes for longer :) x
I agree!!! There are patterns also, if you prefer to make one. :)
That's a great idea! Thank you!
I wish I’d kept my slips! I didn’t use them since retirement but now I enjoy wearing dresses again
Lovely video Sarah! 😊
Wow, 10 000 subs mid august and by the beginning of october almost 14 000. congratulations!!
Thank you! 😊
2 days later and it's over 14k, so well deserved, she is so nice. ❤
Sarah, I just found your channel and I am over the moon! I will be going back through all of them. Can't wait to see your fall plans come to fruition! Lovely to "meet" you. 🧡
Oh! I'm so glad! Welcome! 😊
Dark navy and dark charcoal are good color alternatives for avoiding the harshness of black. They are also good basic colors like black and brown.
Thank you and I'm glad you like the salt and pepper yarn too! I'd be happy to talk about my day job in the Q&A video, thanks for the question! 😊
I'm so glad you enjoy these reccuring seasonal videos! A wide-neck sweater sounds lovely, they're so versatile and universally flattering!
I made a sweater with Ulysse yarn. It was lovely to work with and is one of my favourite yarns!
Thank you for sharing :)
My question for the Q&A is if you have any rituals when you sew?
Nice with Q&A😊
I often find myself too buying eye-catching statement garments or fabrics. They tend to be much more appealing and interesting than neutrals... A couple of years ago I found myself in a situation with MANY clothes that were very difficult to match because almost all were patterned or in a very special color. It really is wise to plan your wardrobe so that there is enough neutrals and solids to tie things together.
It has been so interesting to watch your videos, of course because of the interest for crafting, but also for books and ballet etc.😊
By the way, the soft, cool, delicate colors suit you very nicely. 👍
Some questions:
@@Sarah_Naomi Thank you 😊
Oh, not boring at all!
Looking forward to the Q&A video 👍
Ahahahah "no one asked him" made me laugh out loud :)
Congratulations on the 10k subs. I am a new subscriber and I am completely enamored with your style, your delivery and your aura :) you are beautiful inside and out. I'm very curious to know what do you do for your regular day job?
Can't wait for Q&A video and all the beautiful makes :)
Oh, thank you so much! I'd be happy to talk about my day job in the Q&A video! 📚😉😊
I just wish I could find some in a beautiful taupe or other
soft and cool brown tones, as they would pair so nicely with the more deep but muted tones I like to wear.
Congrats on all of your new subscribers. It's richly deserved!
Ah yes, I also miss all of the lovely fabric shops I used to order from in the UK before Brexit! I hope you find some viscose knit fabrics in shops local to you soon and if I see any, I’ll try and point it out!
I’d make and wear a summer tank top with that pepper yarn. 😊
Exciting makes! Especially looking forward to the seamwork cardigan.
In theory your ideal browns are the Rosy family of browns, because they are pink-based, not red based. (Just like your ideal coral is pink based, and your "burgundy" is much closer to raspberry/purple than red 😊).
Oh wow, thank you for the insight! I've never thought of browns as pink-based before, how interesting! 😊
I enjoy your channel so very much and I think that you are a lovely model as well ❤
Thank you! 😊
I LOVE. all your color choices.
Yes, finding the right beige tone is such a great feeling! And wow! 7 ITY knit pants! That sounds fabulous and oh so mobile and comfortable!
Thanks!
I'm so glad!! Thank you for sharing and I hope you had a wonderful trip!
I love textured knitwear so I’m knitting a brioche stitch vest and a cable and lace sweater this autumn. 🍂 I’d love to see what you’ve knitted before!
That's an excellent tip, I hadn't thought of that! Thank you so much!
Haha, thank you so much! Your faith in my creative vision gives me great confidence 😊
Your choice of fabric, is stunning for fall and winter, also the patterns are perfect match for all your beautiful material!❤❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for both your kind words and the question!
Thank you and oh my! I hope that your winters are at least cool and crisp (and perhaps snowy?) rather than just dark and rainy like here!
I think the mispurchased yarn is lovely and I predict the outcome (in whatever pattern) will be a classic you'll wear often!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful makes, love the floral linen top. Great plans too. I would love to know if you having sewing friends in Paris. I don't know anyone local to me who sews. Also, I would love to get back into knitting, what would you suggest as a very beginner friendly pattern company? It's been a while 😅
Thank you for both your kind words and your questions! I'll try to get to them in the Q&A video!
Burgund- this is what I need 😂. Thank you for inspiration. If you are not sure about grey yarn (husband has right), make a bag or etui for something.
Hi Sarah, could you please talk about why you decided to make France your home and how your life is different from the one you had in the States? Thank you!
Hello and thank you for the question!
I love how your sewing space background looks. I'd love a sewing room tour, detailing what machine(s) you have and your favorite tools or techniques. Also Congrats on your 10K subscribers 🎉❤
Thank you for the ideas!
Congratulations on reaching 10,000 subscribers! 🎉
I too find the onset of autumn a sad time - for me it's about the days getting shorter.
Thank you, Sarah! ❤
Thank you for your kind words, the ideas for the poivre et sel yarn, and the questions!
Can’t wait to see your makes. Congrats on 10K subscribers well done.
Thank you! 😊
Laughed out loud at packaging string!😂. You can add a mohair to change the colour for a future sweater.
😂 Thank you for the idea!
Love your ideas and your fabrics, especially the houndstooth.
For your Q&A..what is your favourite French town or city and why?
Thank you! 😊
I picked up sewing not long ago (a few months ago, all by hand no machine) so I'd like to ask:
1- How do you select the type of fabric for a specific pattern?
2- I LOVE the 1st burgundy dress you showed on the picture examples, could you please share the pattern and fabric type?
Thank you so much!! Keep up the amazing work
I'm so glad you enjoy these videos and thank you! For the 1st burgundy dress I shared, it's the Sew Over It Charlotte Dress in a medium-weight polyester crepe fabric 😊
@@Sarah_Naomi Thank you so much!! it looks amazing on you
Love all your plans. Looking forward to seeing the finished items ❤
Thank you!
Thank you and happy fall sewing!
The Moby slipover looks so cozy and versatile! I love the texture too, how interesting! Happy knitting! 😊
Thank you and I'm so glad to have contributed to your motivation to try sewing again! 😊
I don't see you as a soft summer but mind you I am not an expert in any shape or form 😂😂
It could also be that the camera alters your colouring
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I don't know Heidiy's channel yet, but I'll go check it out and thank you for the recommendation!
I’m sewing for summer as in Australia, just purchased brene top pattern and looking forward to creating… the colours in this video ❤
I tend to use ‘earthy’ colours but trying to add blue ?! Different but like how it looks on me
How lovely! Happy summer sewing and I hope that you enjoy sewing the Brené top! I find that blue looks especially nice with earthy tones (especially brown), and I'm sure you pull it off well!
When you do your pencil skirt I would love to see how you deal with the fabrics at the vent. I’m never quite convinced that my method is the best. ❤😊
😂 my method isn’t very polished, but I’ll keep your request in mind!
Sarah, I loved your video! If you haven’t seen it yet, this new seamwork pattern - the Brookes skirt - might be just what you’re looking for to make your green twill skirt.
Also, the yarn might make a great throw pillow!
Thank you for the idea! 😊
Congrats on the 10k subs what an achievement. The wool I’d make something similar to the original design you wanted. Or you could go totally different. Either way you’ll have 2 new pieces. Men have no idea about craft sewing etc. he needs a smack 😆
What do you do for work ?
Thank you! And I find great satisfaction in proving him wrong with my fabric and yarn choices 😂
Thanks for the question! A lot of people seem curious about my day job, so I'll definitely include it in the Q&A!
Seamwork has just put up some videos on sewing the Milo in a sweater knit weight that I think you might find useful. This planning looks lovely!
I'll check them out, thanks!
Love to see your channel growing! You deserve it!
Thank you! 😊
Yay!!! 10,000 subscribers!! Congratulations ❤️ you are amazing
Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️
@@Sarah_Naomi Thanks so much. Happy to hear you're considering a whole series for beginner sewists. Have a lovely week.
Thank you! And I'm glad to hear that you love your Milo cardigan! 😊
So very inspiring!! Can't wait to see the finished products
You can make a cardigan with some fancy buttons. Can you list the name of the knit fabric below. Thanks
Oh man! 😂
I love your channel. Can you post a link for the zigzag patterned pullover? I love the texture.
Thank you! It's the Kip Sweater by Rebecca Clow and the link is in the description below the video! 😊
Si you're in/near Paris, there is woman with a stall on Sundays in the Marais and she has the most beautiful sets of vintage buttons, already on a card so you don't have to dig through a box of buttons.
Thank you for the tip! If I’m ever in the neighborhood on a Sunday, I’ll try to remember to check it out!
I just finished the Margo skirt from seamwork in a heavy ponte. Hoping I got the waist right or I’m going to be in trouble walking through the airport tomorrow. 😂
Hooray! 🎉I'm crossing my fingers that it's just right and snug enough for you too 🤞and bon voyage!
Looking forward to the results :)
Hey Sarah
Please be aware, that if you attach a lining to your skirt, the lining actually has to be slightly LARGER than the skirt itself. Sounds weird, but it’s true. Just add 2-3 mm to the side seams and you”ll be good 👌
Thank you for the tip!
Do you make mock ups of the new projects you sew or do you jump right in with your main fabric?
And how long have you been sewing?
Thank you for the questions! I've already filmed the Q&A video and I get to your second question, but I can answer your first here! I usually just jump in because with experience, I can usually tell what modifications I'll need to add to the pattern from the start or I know I'll be able to adjust any minor fitting issues as I go. I do sometimes make mock-ups though, and that's when I'm not sure about the fit or it's a garment I'm not familiar making that needs to fit a certain way (like a blazer or my wedding dress!). I hope that helps!
I’m in Europe next week (Frankfurt, Paris, London). Do you have favorite fabric shops in any of those cities?
@@Sarah_Naomi thank you!
Maybe you could knit your intended sweater and dabble in dying it afterwards to a more appealing color
How do you find thicker weight fabric for clothing? I feel that garment fabrics are more transparent
Hi Naomi, where can I purchase the fabric Helen’s closet Donovan skirt fabric, it’s beautiful, thanks
Hello, I purchased that fabric from So Tissus (based in Paris, France) over a year ago. It was deadstock fabric and it looks like they have anymore unfortunately 😕
How did you learn to sew?
❤❤❤❤❤
❤
Just want to complement your lovely speaking voice. No vocal fry, my ears can relax.
Oh, thank you! Vocal fry is a pet peeve of mine too, but it's so culturally pervasive, I find myself doing it sometimes too! 😂
For your Q&A: How many selfmade items do you have in total? :)
Oh my! 😂 I’ve already filmed the Q&A (coming out this weekend hopefully 🤞), so I’ll answer you here and my answer is: I have no idea - many! 😂 suffice to say that I have enough handmade garments to wear almost all handmade outfits all year 😊
I live in New England, Rhode Island, which State are you from?
Connecticut! 😊
@@Sarah_Naomi We were next door neighbors 😁
Oh dear, silly me 😩 I just realised that I referred to you as Naomi, when you are of course Sarah . Sincere apologies all the way from England 😍
That's okay! 😂😊
What is your day job?
i love your summer tee and tank that you made. i’m not confident enough to try it. i did find a video for a different heavy sweater that i’m going to try. ruclips.net/video/D49f490un-U/видео.htmlsi=3rANsS8oBLDWcV9N
But would you ever consider a video to teach how to make the tee and tank?😬 I would be over the moon if I could ever make one.
@@Sarah_NaomiIt can also be an issue with the pattern maker if you made a tutorial for their pattern. Should get permission first.
Ah, yes, you're right. Thanks for pointing that out!
I'll have to watch an episode to see what all the other characters wear too to get a better idea, and maybe I'll go into why I have such an aversion to the series (but of course, it's great if you like it!) 😂😂
@@Sarah_Naomi I’m curious to hear what you think about their fashion sense. I love the scenery in that show.
