Cisco Lightweight (CAPWAP) to Mobility Express (ME) Conversion

- Convert a CAPWAP AP to Mobility Express controller/AP. I added a trick and a solution to the most common insufficient space issue I see when doing the conversion.
Commands Used:
logging console disable
capwap ap ip 10.0.0.101 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.1
ap-type mobility-express tftp://10.0.0.2/AIR-AP3800-K9-ME-8-5-103-0.tar
If on a version less than 8.3 you will need to upgrade to CAPWAP code 8.3 or higher:
ap-type mobility-express tftp://10.0.0.2/ap3g3-k9w8-tar.153-3.JF.tar

Thanks for the video & as your videos instruction, i have already converted AP from capwap to mobility express. but facing some problem to setup mobility. Our AP can boot by part1 & also part2 & during working in cli it is going to stop mode & start again. So, how would we overcome the problem & can set an static IP & which procedure should i follow to run mobility express properly?
If I have 1815I-Q-K9 (none - K9C) can I convert and use one of those as a wireless controller and the rest will be regular APs that will connect to Mobility Express WLC?

@Cisco Sal, if i have 13 device AIR AP and than i have one firmware , Probelm or No Problem ?
I see on the Cisco site one of the files for the conversion is: AIR-AP3800-K9-ME-8-3-130-0.tar your instruction referenced "103.tar". Was your reference a typo or is Cisco's file just newer than what you used to produce the video?
+robb kinnin you are just looking at a different version of code. You are referencing a little older of a code 8.3. I was using 8.5.

I was able to convert my 3802 to mobility express. I can’t seem to tftp the ap file to have the ap’s join the controller. It is saying file not found. Pulling whatever little hair have out

TFTPD32 or TFTPD64 depending on the old laptop I'm using.

When you convert an AP into ME, does it still function as an AP, as well as an express-controller same time?

I have a Cisco 2802i CAPWAP AP with software version 8.3. If want to convert this to ME version 8.10, can I migrate directly to 8.10 from 8.3 or do I need to do incremental upgrade, like 8.3 to 8.5, 8.5 to 8.8 and then 8.8 to 8.10?
So after going through this process do i go thru ur convert to autonomous mode video pr does mobility express make it autonomous?

Is the reverse easily doable: converting AIR-AP3802P-B-K9C to AIR-AP3802P-B-K9? I'm not technical, so forgive me if this should be obvious from the discussion. Any reverse instructions appreciated.
Nice video. I followed it and converted an 1815i AP from CAPWAP to mobility express. However, the 5GHz radio remains disabled. Can you guide how to activate it?

Thanks! Just to confirm, you require a K9C versus a K9 PID to convert a ME to CAPWAP and vice versa. But AIR-AP3802i-B-K9 (US PID) only with CAPWAP cannot covert to ME correct?
The ones I used were AIR-AP3802i-B-K9. So, yes these can be converted to ME. The difference is from an ordering perspective the K9C ones you can select to have the ME code on them from the factory. The k9 ones there is no option to select ME code at the time of ordering. So, if you get the AIR-AP3802i-B-K9 they will have to be converted, or you use them in CAPWAP mode.

Nice but you're taking a lot of shortcuts ! How to setup the tftp server, ho to connect the AP to the laptop, etc. I don't have a controller.
I get an error at the end: image upgrade not needed, changing AP Type to Mobility Express. What would I have to do?

i have 1800 series that won't let me Type anything in the CLI it just keep looking for a CAPWAP server then it reboot itself after 15 attempt !!
Yes you have to convert it to mobility express before you set it up. Not sure why it's rebooting. Is it getting enough power?
Cisco Sal Yes it is geeting enough power from Thr POE , i accessed to it via console and it says CAPWAP state : discovering looks like i need a wireless controlled to set it up then i can convert to Mobility express ?!
No you do not need a controller. Follow the steps in the video and you should be fine.
@@CiscoSal I'm having the same issue now. Without a controller on the network, it's stuck in a boot loop because of repeated CAPWAP discovery failure. Any idea how we can handle this?
for some reason I can't get to the ME through GUI. I just connected the 3800 to my laptop and did the upgrade. I should be ablle to access the ME on my laptop correct? 10.0.0.2...any suggestions?
You need to connect to the SSID that the AP puts out. Then you can connect to the GUI.
It prompted me to create an employee SSID when I was converting it. I don't see that SSID broadcast ed.

You do not need to worry about it. When it finds the controller, the controller will push down the image.

Has anyone used these APs in your home labs or home and if so how are they?
I use them in my house exclusively. I will say I recently received some Meraki GO equipment and it is a lot more user friendly. It has some good features like being able to throttle specific traffic and block domains. Ill be doing a review on them shortly. You can buy these devices on Amazon sold by Cisco. So since its legit, you also get full support. Here is a link to the Amazon store amzn.to/3FqHWXY You do not need to purchase licenses or smartnet or anything like that. There is an optional security license that basically connects the Meraki GO firewall to the Umbrella Security Cloud, for more in-depth security. Way above what linksys, netgeaer etc will do. But if its for your home you probably don't need it.
@@CiscoSal Thanks for the C-Go recommendation!! I did a review of them a few revisions ago.. I am still waiting on the team to fill a few requests for me before I jump back on that ship. I am happy to see they introduced the web UI a month or so ago. I do have a question about the guest portal setup.. How is it on the ME platform I "think" you are able to change the background pages within the portal but wanted to make sure, and the 240AC doesn't allow this.
I've tried this once before without success and back at it again. According to cisco documentation, the running version must be 8.3.102.0 or greater. I have 8.3.143.0 currently, and I get the disk space error. I don't have the entitlement for the capwap image and no longer have access to the WLC to upgrade that way. It's funny, I have entitlement for the ME code, but not the lwap code. Cisco isn't what it used to be.
Do you have smartnet? Nothing has changed. Smartnet is still required for code upgrades and support on APs
@@CiscoSal I have never kept smartnet on the APs, but I do still have it on the controller. I used to be able to get code for the APs. I'm assuming I had that via the controller's contract, but not sure why that changed.

You can download the software from cisco.com. You can also purchase them with the ME software already loaded. I recommend talking to your partner to make sure they are selling you the correct version. If not they will probably default to the version that joins controllers.

If you purchased the AP though cisco sanctioned channels then you can sign up for a cisco.com account and download the software. That’s how cisco protects themselves from unauthorized resellers.

How do you find the ip for the TFTP server?
You need to make a tftp server on a laptop or something. Then its just the IP address of the laptop
