  • We made some new year resolutions in 2020 - did we succeed with them?
Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! Yep, we’re still in lockdown so we can’t be in the same room. Thusly, we are chancing a thoughtful look rearwards at our resolutions for 2020. How did we fare?
the shows referenced in this video are as follows, with links in case you’d like to watch them again… or maybe for the first time.
All the gear used is listed in the video descriptions in each individual video, links below. Enjoy!
Note from me (Mick here) on all the mental health stuff from 15 minutes: I just want to be absolutely clear that I’m not arguing the case for any of these approaches, or holding them up as anything you ‘should’ do. I’m merely sharing a personal experience that may or may not be of use.
Similarly with terms and concepts; I’d really urge everyone not to get too tied up with specific words or definitions or the idea that any of this is ‘right’ or ‘correct’. It is merely a way of thinking - or more accurately, a way of NOT thinking - that has really helped me personally. With that in mind, I won’t be engaging in any discussion about the validity of anything discussed on an academic level. A RUclips comments section can’t adequately expand a whole thesis or philosophical standpoint. If you want to argue about the academics, please read the books thoroughly first and then hit some psychology and philosophy forums. No doubt they are alight with debate!

Mick I’d love to hear you talk more about mental health as an ongoing thing. There’s something about your lucid and vulnerable monologue that has really brightened my day and made me feel more hopeful about my own situation. Please do provide updates as the year goes on and perhaps we can all help eachother. All the best mate.

Simon, thank you so much. I was a bit concerned that it was all a bit self indulgent and not what people come here for. But then I decided that if it helps one person, then it’s more valuable than yet another chat about Strats. Ha! Best to you sir!

@@ThatPedalShow People rarely come anywhere to here about mental health, which probably contributes to it being a subject that's rarely discussed and often avoided despite being profoundly important to great many people. I think having these kinds of genuine insight and reflection on the matter come up in places where you don't necessarily expect them is really important and probably very helpful to many.
And I don't think a single one of your mental health monologues have ever come of as self indulgent, not even a little bit.

I found my depression was apparently kicked off by low Vit D levels, and a huge life change due to disability. Then it seems to snowball. Diet and exercise has certainly help me cope, but I also leaned on a small dose of Lexipro until I got it all worked out. So good to see folks face their emotions and work toward the positive side. Cheers Mick.

Mick, thank you for discussing mental health. I generally have considered myself on it but, I have spent the past 12 years pushing myself and being super stressed with work. The impact this has on me, family and friends is not good. I think your chat resonated with me and I should do something about it. Thanks for the links.

Thank you guys, TPS brightens up my week. Mick, your honesty on the section on mental health was amazing. As a music teacher working on teaching a couple of schools and a lot of private students this could not be more relevant. I have students who will open up to me as a music teacher as it gives them a release from the online schoolday. My own wellbeing is lifted by an enthusiastic student, even just a joke like "do I have to go back to Spanish?" Can make my day.
Love to you Mick and to Catherine too.

Thanks for the honesty and integrity. Mick, it pains me to think that there's an alternate universe where you aren't with us any more due to unmitigated mental health issues. Indeed, the talent and inspiration of many great musicians, artists, teachers, and such have been unfairly lost due to a variety of reasons that all result in not facing these issues or seeking treatment. I applaud you for not only doing so, but having the courage to share your thoughts with your audience and inspire countless others. The two of you inspired me to pick up an instrument I knew nothing about, and I'm going to keep at it, even if I'm rubbish. Cheers!

Although it's a very different profession in some respects, what I do (teaching secondary Physics) is actually quite similar in that 99% of what you do is received well by the audience, but it's the 1% where it goes even slightly wrong that sticks with you.
What you're doing on this channel is education in its purest sense. You have an agenda, but you don't really stick to it. You go down rabbit holes. You chase things that are interesting rather than productive. You appeal to - and I mean this in a positive sense - a bunch of absolute nerds rather than the mainstream. Esoterica is where it's at.

I have no doubt that this video was very helpful to a lot of people. I've given up making New Year's Resolutions. I always end up making an impossible list of things I could never achieve. Not to frighten people off with a bible quote but even Jesus said "Do not worry about tomorrow, tomorrow will have enough worries of its own" (or similar). This past year I have not played the guitar hardly at all, in part because I haven't been permitted to go to Chruch and make a noise. My home sittuation doesn't allow me the freedom to play when I want, as I want. On the up side, I've had time to miss playing, which I hope will inspire me to go back to it with more gusto. Not that I need to put pressure on myself to do that either.

Mick, Mick, Mick. There is some way where I sometimes wonder if this is the reality of modernity/post modernity: the Ego has no where to go but this depressed state. In the TPS spirit of better questions: might it be that depression is possibly not as good a term for this pressure and reduction as compression. Tolle, Dyer and plenty of others would say turn off the compressor. We know its not that easy, except for it is - with practice. It is that thing you said about not seeing yourself down in the middle of it, but as if you are observing it (paraphrased). Practice. Also, all ego's are delicate. That's their deal. Thank you for this. The entire video is fantastic, but I am grateful to hear you work through all of this - and there is not one of us who can't relate - and nothing I have written is a diminishing of the seriousness of it for those who are struggling.

The head of the counselling service at my place of work has developed a model, which she's published at least one journal paper on and is (or has just finished) writing up for her PhD thesis.
She talks about everyone having a "workable range" of emotion where things are fine and you're tolerant of being a little up or a little down from normal: go above the range and you start to get stressed or anxious ("up regulated") and below it you get "down regulated" and depressed or withdrawn.
When you're out of your workable range, whether up or down, the range is compressed -- effectively you have less dynamic range in which all is okay, plus it's harder to find your way back to because it's narrower.
It's an interesting model and I was very much reminded of it by your post.

@@QuirqUK That is truly fascinating. I appreciate you sharing this. I like having these kind of images and ways of "looking" at it. I have often said - and sometime years ago in response to Mick and Dan at some point: life and relationships should be like subtractive eq: take away what you don't like (cut) instead of boosting the stuff you want: lower the noise floor, leave room and let the undesirable go. So, now we have compression and eq has really great metaphors for life. LOL.

I think that on occassion something gets lost in translation, for example, from Detroit English to UK English. Sincere questions and coments made by viewers can be taken in unintended ways. I'm sure that the vast majority of your fans mean you well and support you on your journey. The inherent problem, for me, with RUclips comments is that you never know the background of the commentators (8, 18, or 80 years old) and under what circumstance/frame of mind they are momentarily in when they write the comment (reactionary, resentful, antagonistic, insecure, drunk etc).
I imagine it's kinda like hearing all the demons and (thankfully here, mostly) angels on your shoulder at once.
Anyway, keep up the great work and don't let the ba****rds drag you down.
