  • This is a series that will follow The Mountaineers' Olmsted 50. Links are below. The Mountaineers are a hiking and conservation society in Seattle. The Olmsted Brothers Firm (primarily brother John as brother Frederick was in general poor health and could not make the trip from the east coast) designed dozens of parks and public spaces in Seattle (any many more elsewhere) from 1903-1941. The Mountaineers put together an in-city hike that covers 31 miles (about 50k) and touches many Olmsted parks as it winds through the heart of the Olmsted Master Plan. I am going to walk the route in 10 sections throughout 2024.
This one picks up near the Washington Park Playfields and works down to Leschi on Lake Washington. It is a bit short but the last one and the next one are both a tad long and that is just how the geography lays itself out. One of the spots that I linger at is Viretta park and it is in the backyard, more or less, of the house where Kurt Cobain, Nirvana's front man, killed himself and is still a Cobain shrine all these decades later. I end along the beaches of Lake Washington with views of both Bellevue and of Tahoma (Mt. Rainier) out over the water. Enjoy!
