Thanks for this! I just did the same job, as well as the shocks. What a challenge indeed.
After 1,5 hours of banging I bought a Ball joint separation fork. That did the trick! Jam some spanners between the wishbone and the tool if you got the fork all the way in and you still need some room. Just a tip for anyone attempting this. Not a job for someone without patience.
any paticular separator work well? Seen loads of different ones, some branded as "universal", others for specific models.
Very helpful! After seeing how much unnecessary shite you hve to dismantle, I'm definately soaking my bolts and balljoints in atf this wee, and attacking it next week! 🤣 As a side note, I also have to move my height sensor bracket across to my new control arm. Somehow it doesn't come with it!
Thanks a lot for your videos! I had an accident with my Giulietta in January. I gave a try to fix her by myself and had to replace front shocks, control arms, drop links and other parts. Needless to say your videos helped A LOT. Now she's back in action, not perfect but at least she did not end in the graveyard and I can go to work with her. Left ball joint came easily, but the right one was a hard fight! I had to get the brake disk off so I could hit more directly to get it down.
I've done it the hard way 😪 didn't remove the bumper and removed the old bushes from the arms, 100% you did it the best way, the only good thing for me, is when I have to replace the ball joints I now know how to remove the bumper and the bolts are greased. For anyone reading this replace the full arms rather than waste time just replacing the bushes...thanks Tony
I'm going to do this saturday. I've bought a new pair of control arms and pressed in some PU bushings from "Strongflex" Much cheaper than powerflex and arrives within 2 days from Poland. Now the hard part. Hopefully everything works out the same on my car. Noticed my car has some extra bits and bobs that make it a bit more difficult. For example some sensor type device on the rear anti-roll bar.
I found heating the knuckle by the ball joints helped a lot when I did mine over summer, same time as I did wheel bearings. Have to be careful not to melt the CV boot using oxy-acetylene. Was still an absolute pain though. Thanks for the video Tony, I'm sure it'll help a lot of people
Tony, great job,i tried this on my car 10 days ago on the drivers side,my pinch bolts were solid so got both sides so done the week before and replaced them with well greased new ones,on the drivers side i used one of the fork type tools to batter that ball joint out,the arm i was going to replace it with i had put the powerflex bush on the rear,to try and install it as it is so much stiffer than the original i jacked up the suspension only to pop out the inner driveshaft spider joint, car has sat like that for 10 days, new wish bones arriving tomorrow and mobile mechanic on saturday to sort out my drive shaft,my advise for anyone attempting to do these with powerflex bushes at home is don't do it,both new arms with rear powerflex bushes coming to ebay soon, cheers
The toughest thing is to remove the ball joint, You need a good 2kg hammer and a suitable chisel or an electric or pneumatic hammer that will do the job in 30 sec.
BTW, the bumper does not need to be taken off, The small inner liner part can be turned clockwise far enough to make space without having to undo that hidden nut.
Thank you Toni
Many thanks for this video! Thinking about replacing mine on my 940, but looks a lot more difficult than on my previous Astra OPC haha.
Appreciate your work Tony! Your videos convinced me to get a pair of Yato stands, jack and I have started to deal with issues by myself as a homegrown "mechanic"... Thanks one more time! :)
That’s amazing. Thank you for the feedback. Good luck with all you do. All the best 👍
Pretty well same as my Fiat 500…… and I’m just about to purchase one of these with the same problem…deja vu 🤦🏻♂️🙄
Thanks for the tip with doing the ball joint first😎🤙🏽
Thank you for posting this video, it has been a huge help for doing this job myself!
You made that look easy. Good luck today with the MOT, it she’ll fly through.
Thanks Nick. I was disappointed not to get round to the front anti rollbar bushes, but it is what it is. Also someone decided to take a chunk out of one of the tyres recently… naming no names 🙄. Speak soon. All the best 👍
@@vialettotony I’m sure you will make the person who took the chunk out of the tyre pay the appropriate fee 😉
Recently did ours. Took me about an hour total after removing the front bumper and bar.
Front shocks next for me 😆
Almost done... this is serious hell. Couldn't have done it without this video. And my right control arm has the headlight height control mechanism added on it as well... who engineered this 😂
How did you move the headlight sensor?
Appreciate your videos TONY! I am not sure ,but you should get the torque on the bolts of the bushes after the car is sitting on its own weight. Otherwise you could rip them apart as I know. As you lift the car the arm goes down and you fix the bolts in this position right. When you put the car down the bush going to get too much move up because you fixed the bolts when that was in the air. That can cause damage on the bushes.
I’m talking about the front bush….
Hi and thank you for watching. Hopefully you heard me say and saw the part where I Jack the hub up to mimic the car being on the ground , after explaining you can’t do it with the car on the ground because of the support beams needing to be installed. So yea, you are correct, but glad to report I have it covered 😉👍😂. All the best 👍
Very good video. Thank You. I would not dare myself.
Thank you maciej. Appreciate it. Keep well, all the best 👍
What a bloody nightmare 😂 at least you didn't have to take the rear brake calipers and rear silencer off as well 🙏
Grazie!
Con questo video ho sostituito i miei bracci inferiori in poco meno di 4 ore.
Vorrei sostituire le boccole della stabilizzatrice anteriore senza abbassare la culla. Spero di riuscire
Grazie ancora!
Ciao Davide. buono a sapersi. felice che tu l'abbia fatto bene. non vedo l'ora di finire presto i miei cespugli stabilizzatori. ti auguro il meglio. 👍
Thanks man i have to do the same with my giulietta
Thanks for this video. I’m going to replace my suspension arms soon. Is there any chance you are making a video on replacing the front wheel bearings?
Hi. Nothing planned anytime soon for such a video i'm afraid. All the best 👍
@@vialettotony no problem:)
Fantastic video Tony - you're a saint for the G community! Just curious how much you paid (& where you bought them) for a new control arm with bushes included and also for the replacement drop links. Also noticed you've upgraded to some power tools - electric ratchet + wrench? #Fancy Maybe a review video of those tools for some future content?
Hi Saleem. Thank you. Yes, the tools were a worthy investment for sure. Definitely makes light of things. The control arms were about £43 from AUTODOC. They took forever to arrive though nearly three weeks. The drop links were not as described either, so quite disappointed with them. (No spanner attachment to the main pin).
Thanks for watching. All the best 👍
@@vialettotony I was just looking at autodoc before i dropped that comment - seems pretty reasonable given the replacement bushings seem be £20/30 each anyway! Are you planning on doing the same video for the rear suspension?
@@Ragnarrok2023 yes, I hope to refresh the entire setup, whether with new parts or replacement bushes (probably new parts based on cost savings as you have found also). Did you see the rear anti rollbar video yet?
Hi, should one have an alignment done after this procedure?
Yes definitely. Mine was well out after. All the best 👍
@@vialettotony thank you
My sump nut is on that tight even the garage cant get it out.can i do an oil change through the dipstick
Hi graham. That’s less than ideal. I’ve never tried to suck the oil before. You may be able to syphon it out but I can’t say for definite. Sorry I can’t help more.
All the best 👍
Hi Tony , I have the guiletta but it makes ticking noise whilst on idle very load, what do yiu think it could be?
Hi Imran. It could be so many things. Rocker clearance or something fouling or air con compressor…. So many things. Do you know where it’s coming from? All the best 👍
Thanks for the video. What brand are these new arms?
They’re A. B. S. All the best 👍
How many miles does your car have before you change control arms? Did you have noise, knocks...?
Hi MegaMare87. I have 62k miles, but the car is 11 years old. No noise, but MOT advisories on the bushes last year. Hope that helps. All the best 👍
Dude, Ive just done mine. That bottom pin in the arm is an utter pig isn't it? Arms, drop links and track rod ends done. Still knocking though 😂
Probably the strut tops... Sigh. 😂
Hi. Did you ever manage to resolve this. Had my lower arms changed (the bushes were shot) then got a louder knocking.
Forums suggesting the car wasn’t torqued off the jack but it was done at a long established alfa specialist.
Was it your strut mounts, drop links or something else in the end?
@@anthonymeek4248 the shock on the nearside was utterly trashed. Changed for new ones and job done. 👍
@@egon2875 thank you! Dropped mine off at 2nd garage today (1st couldn’t find the problem). These guys reckon it’s the top strut mounts and possibly the shocks within the struts as well. Expensive I guess but to get rid of the noise I’ll do anything.
Thank you for your reply reassuring!
Two failed bushes on each arm here. Is it worth it to replace them or to proceed with the whole arms?
Hi Radoslav. Replace the whole arms for sure. I'd bet that you're ball joint is on the way out too. All the best. 👍
@@vialettotony thank you. I suppose it's not necessarly to go to wheel alignment after that, right?
@@radoslav2596 haha. I take it you didn’t watch until the end then? Yes, I would recommend it. My car is booked in for this tomorrow as well as the new MOT. All the best 👍
That’s part that you replaced mate used to do weird noises?
Hi Gentian. No noises fortunately but the bushes were worn. I’m sure it would only have been a matter of time before I started getting some knocks and creaks though. All the best 👍
Any bad symptoms before you changed the wishbones?
Only observations on the bushes in the MOT. All the best 👍
love my giulietta but god it's a fkin pain to work on. feels like a motorbike.... "i need to take this little thing off, so I have to take it half apart"
So,update... gave up on it. Managed to get quite far into this but the frame bolts were so corroded there was just no way for me to get them off. Took it to a garage had both replaced...but now there is a weird clunk (at low speed, when fully turning the steering or when starting to move backwards and forwards). So either the garage messed it up or by replacing them a new problem was uncovered
@@RealDarkBlade I have the exact same issue - did you ever get it resolved?
Ciao Tony
@@vialettotony Grazie tony
Hello perfect!!!!How many km you do that?
About 100k
Hope that helps. All the best 👍
Sorry again Which brand you put
@@hlias0224I put TCR from Auto Doc , very good.
Che tipo di bracetto oscillante hai usato?
CIAO. Scusa, non sono sicuro di aver capito la tua domanda. Ti auguro il meglio 👍
Di meccanica ne sai poco o niente!
Haha 👍. Thanks for watching. All the best 👍
