The Line 6 just sounds like records you know and love... The X4 sounds like commercial-music-producers use it. I completely understand those who say the Line 6 over-colors, but I understand also why they made it that way. It's the only way you enjoy analog-vibe delay with decent feedback and presence but without sounding like mushy strings... If you push the X4 it ends up sounding like a muddy-verby synth, which just creates a mess in a band situation. It can be OK playing clean "the edge" vibe or whatever (like demonstrated), but for a mix that is more dense just generally music that dosen't revolve around 'HUGE clean guitar with delay' I think the Line 6 is much much better. IMO it actually sounds more digital AND more analog (the good from both worlds - it's warm, modulated, but clear and defined..).
I think the analog delay on the Line6 sounds horrible and completely unusable. It gets in the way almost immediatly. Which is not an immediate given in standard analog delays. There is a difference between the degrading and the quick self oscilation on some real analog delays and the simulations on the Line6.
Feels like the decays on the DL4 are overly colored. I can almost hear the filter they are going through each pass. The AEx4 sounds more natural or real to me.
Had the line 6, is a great pedal no doubt, but some reason the Alter Ego x4 just sounds more transparent Love the clarity of this pedal and the output, IMO sounds Awesome!! Looking into buying the Alter Ego x4 ...... : )
I had both. Love the tweakability of the DL4, but the volume drop killed it for me. Also, it's not a very durable pedal. I wish I could tweak the mod and tone on the AGX4, but the fact that it's durable and doesn't alter your tone (significantly) makes it a winner for me. Line 6 should really consider upgrading the DL4, I'm sure it would sell like hotcakes.
Before I listened to these pedals side by side I thought that maybe 1 day I'd get the Alter Ego, but now I'd rather buy the Line 6. I still like the Alter Ego but for me the Line 6 sounds nicer so I'll keep my eye out for 1 of these 2nd hand on eBay.
You can still find good deals on these (DL4). Line up all your finds in different browser tabs and go over all the details of each one. READ the seller comments closely! I found one recently which was listed as being in "good" condition, but it arrived in mint condition, like new. I was thinking beforehand that the photos DID look very good. Even the box has only a small dent in it, as if the unit sat on a warehouse shelf for all these years.
The analog emulation repeats on the DL4 have an authentic lo-fi decay characteristic where as the AE repeats sound digital and have almost no decay/degradation, in this instance like the DL4 much better.
The AEx4 sounds more organic to my ears, the DL4 has its sound and its great but it does this digitally colored thing at times that is a little tinny sounding. my vote goes to the AEx4.
One thing I liked about the Line 6 (borrowed one for a while) was that it had some heft to it (thick cast aluminum case opposed to pressed steel). It stayed put and didn't slide around. How is the build quality and weight of the Alter Ego unit in comparison?
I like the reverse on the LIne 6. I tired one at my local music shop and it didn't have the original guitar signal just the backwards guitar notes. I saw that on another review the Alter Ego actually played the un-altered notes then the backwards ones. Line 6 is better for this reason.
The line 6 is the worst guitar pedal I’ve ever purchased. It’s broken multiple times despite hardly any playing with it. I will never purchase another line 6 product.

nice to hear your playng like this! thx for my pleasure
The sound of DL4 is more "analog" and authentic.....the AE is more crystalline and transparent, but more organic, more digital ...........
More organic, and more digital? Sounds contradictory..

brewedathome Interesting. Though, I still prefer to have a standalone delay pedal. M5 would be out of the question for me.
You just got me thinking. I would love to see a DL4 vs M5 video.
Dl4 is warm. and it's like looking at memories.

Beautiful Playing! I like the Alter ego just a touch better, it seems more warm and crisp. BUT I own a line 6, for now.
Me too. I have the DL4, but I see things about both that I like. If I had unlimited funds to spend on gear I would own both.
I own both, but the A.E. wins due to subdivision and lack of weight.

yeah, but the line 6 has acknowledged electronic problems by everyone that has owned one, so...

DL 4 !
THE ANALOG ECHO ON DL4 IS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE A DM2 BUT SOUNDS LIKE A CARBON COPY, TRIPPS?
the guitar sounded better through the TC, never-mind the sound of the delay. the guitar sounded thin through it.
It’s 2021 and no one has released a better delay than the DL4 🤷♂️
It is a pretty good delay pedal
Alter Ego Is the best delay under 200€

+Bob Bob In the FB/AG X4 you just need to turn down the feedback and you will hear the backwads signal only.
Exactly ..Easily tweaked, on either unit to do both applications w/mix and feedback adjustments..
AlterEgo x4 all night long

I bought a DL4 a few years ago with replacement quiet switches and it's never given me a problem.
